Talk of the Town A Warm Welcome to Ampthill Park Good afternoon and welcome to Ampthill Park for our second home match of the season. An extended warm welcome to the management, players and officials of Hillingdon Borough, as well as to today’s match officials. We return back home having secured another three points on the road against London Lions, a hard fought 2-1 win, having trailed at half time but eventually turned it around. That win has taken us to joint second in the league alongside St. Panteleimon (6-1 and 71 wins in their opening matches has given them a far superior goal difference over us). The league leaders Shefford Town & Campton have a perfect record of 4 wins from 4 played.
What both these teams have in common is that they are new to step 6 football this season; St Panteleimon entering from the Middlesex County League and Shefford Town & Campton from the Beds County League. To win their respective leagues last season means they have more than enough talent at their disposal to hold their own in this league and it’s no surprise to see them up there; as Hillingdon will testify, having been beaten by Shefford Town & Campton on their own ground 4-1 last Saturday.
Having played 4 league matches this season we are already over 10% of the way through the league season. The league table doesn't really start to take shape until 10 or so league matches have been played, but being closer to the top than the bottom at any time of the season is always pleasing to see.
Since we beat Wodson Park on the opening day of the season they have gone on to lose all 3 league matches they have played. The visitors here a fortnight ago FC Broxbourne Borough, who we drew with 2-2, went to Shefford on the following Tuesday and got beat 4-1. They played Winslow United at home last Saturday looking for their first league of the win season, it wasn’t to be as they lost 5-0. So, whilst it is great to have 10 points from the 12 that have been on offer to date, much greater challenges lie ahead. We are expecting Hillingdon Borough to come here and make it as difficult as possible for us to secure our first home win of the season, as they look for their first league win. Today is setup to be a cracker and is one of the reasons we all craved getting the football season back into full flow. Forecasts suggest the sun is even going to have his hat on today. Enjoy. Up the Amps!
The 133rd AGM of The International Football Association Board (The IFAB) held in Aberdeen, Scotland on 2 March 2019 approved a number of amendments to, and clarifications of, the Laws of the Game for 2019/20. Three changes were approved following 2 years of worldwide experiments; •
The introduction of yellow and red cards for misconduct by team officials.
•
A player being substituted leaving the field at the nearest point on the boundary line.
•
A goal kick and a free kick for the defending team in their own penalty area, the ball is in play as soon the kick is taken (it can be played before it leaves the penalty area).
Other changes include:
Clearer wording for ‘handball’.
Attacking team players must be at least 1m away from a defensive ‘wall’.
The goalkeeper only has to have one foot on the goal line at a penalty kick.
New dropped ball procedure.
Substitutes – Law 3 A player who is being substituted must leave by the nearest point on the touchline/goal line. So players will now have to think twice about how they exit the pitch and, not only that, they must also make their way straight to the technical area or dressing room after being subbed, or risk being sanctioned for unsporting behaviour. Dropped Ball – Law 8 & 9 If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper. If play is stopped outside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for one player of the team that last touched the ball at the point of the last touch. In all cases, all the other players (of both teams) must be at least 4m (4.5yds) away. If the ball touches the referee (or another match official) and goes into the goal, team possession changes or a promising attack starts, a dropped ball is awarded. Handball – Law 12 Deliberate handball remains an offence. The following ‘handball’ situations, even if accidental, will be a free kick: 1. the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm 2. a player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touches their hand/arm and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity 3. the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger 4. the ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm) Free Kicks – Law 13 When there is a ‘wall’ of three or more defenders, the attackers are not allowed within 1 metre of the wall; an attacker less than 1 metre from the ‘wall’ when the kick is taken will be penalised with an indirect free kick When the defending team takes a free kick in their own penalty area, the ball is in play once the kick is taken; it does not have to leave the penalty area before it can be played.
Penalty Kick – Law 14 The team’s penalty taker can have (quick) treatment/assessment and then take the kick. The goalkeeper must not be touching the goalposts/crossbar/nets; they must not be moving. The goalkeeper must have at least part of one foot on/in line with the goal line when the kick is taken; cannot stand behind the line. Goalkeepers are not permitted to stand in front of or behind the line. As the kicker can ‘stutter’ in the run, it is reasonable that the goalkeeper can take one step in anticipation of the kick. Team Officials – Law 5
A team official guilty of misconduct will be shown a YC (caution) or RC (sending-off); if the offender cannot be identified, the senior coach who is in the technical area at the time will receive the YC/RC. Goal Kick – Law 16 The ball is in play once the kick is taken; it can be played before leaving the penalty area. Opponents must remain outside the penalty area until the ball is in play. Goal Celebrations – Law 12 A Yellow Card for an ‘illegal’ celebration (e.g. removing the shirt) remains even if the goal is disallowed. Kick-Off – Law 8 The team that wins the toss can now choose to take the kick-off or which goal to attack (previously they only had the choice of which goal to attack) Medical Breaks – Law 7 Difference between ‘cooling’ breaks (90 secs – 3 mins) and ‘drinks’ breaks (max 1 min). In the interests of player safety, competition rules may allow, in certain weather conditions (e.g. high humidity and temperatures), ‘cooling’ breaks (from ninety seconds to three minutes) to allow the body’s temperature to fall; they are different from ‘drinks’ breaks (maximum one minute) which are for rehydration. Players’ Equipment – Law 4 Multi-coloured/patterned undershirts are allowed if they are the same as the sleeve of the main shirt. Quick Free Kick and YC/RC – Law 12 If the referee is about to issue a YC/RC but the non-offending team takes the free kick quickly and creates a goal-scoring opportunity, the referee can delay the YC/RC until the next stoppage if the offending team was not distracted by the referee. Temporary Dismissals In addition to these law changes, the 2019/20 season will see the introduction of sin bins (formally named temporary dismissals) from step 5 (Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division level) down. These are explained in more detail on the next page.

The first club was founded as Yiewsley F.C. in 1872, and played on a small area of open ground in Falling Lane, Yiewsley, in Middlesex. The club made its debut in the FA Cup in the 1939– 40 season, losing to Maidenhead United in the extra preliminary qualification round. The club renamed itself as Hillingdon Borough in 1964 in line with the local government reorganisation in London that saw the formation of the London Borough of Hillingdon.

The change of name saw their fortunes change, as in their second season they were promoted to the Premier Division of the Southern League after finishing runners up. In 1968–69 they finished runners-up to Cambridge United, who were duly elected to the Football League. The following season, they reached the third round proper of the FA Cup beating Wimbledon and Luton Town before losing to Sutton United 4–1 in a replay. In the 1970–71 season, they reached the FA Trophy final at Wembley losing 3–2 to Telford United, after leading 2–0 at the interval.
The club failed to build on the success of the late 1960s and early 1970s. A merger came with Burnham to form Burnham & Hillingdon in 1986. This club ran for two more seasons before changing their name back to Burnham, and continue to play in the Southern league.
The name Hillingdon Borough was resurrected in 1990 when Bromley Park Rangers from the Chiltonian League took over the ground of Ruislip, with the help of four former directors from the old club, and changed their name. The newly named club then joined the Premier Division of the Spartan League for the start of the 1990–91 campaign. The club would then go on to finish Runners-up twice before the league merged with the South Midlands League to form the Spartan South Midlands Football League. The club was placed in the Premier South Division. In 2006, Hillingdon Borough reached the FA Vase final at St. Andrews, Birmingham losing 3-1 to Cheshire club Nantwich Town. Also in that year they finished 2nd in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division, but were promoted due to continued restructuring of non-league football, joining the Southern League Division One South & West. During the 2007–08 season, captain Danny Tilbury led Steve Ringrose's side to lift the Errea Cup (Southern League Cup) with a 4–1 aggregate win against Premier side Clevedon Town. Following the departure of Steve Ringrose the club was transferred to the Isthmian League Division One North. The club struggled under new manager Steve Hale and in their first season in the Isthmian League they finished bottom of the division and were relegated back to the Spartan South Midlands League in 2009.
In recent years the club have had little stability in the managerial department and on and off the field. When Gamdoor Dhaliwal resigned as chairman the club were on the brink of liquidation until local businessman Mick Harris stepped in to save the club. Gary Meakin, aged 26 years old, took over in 2010 and was in the process of building a competitive team before swapping Hillingdon for Northwood in March 2011. Jesse Smith, an experienced coach on the Middlesex scene, was appointed as Meakin's successor before his departure in 2012 and achieved a 10th-place finish and a cup final in his only season in charge. Then it was the turn of 2005 Football Icon winner Sam Hurrell to take charge in September 2012, then only 24 years of age, alongside co-manager Jason O'Connor. Following relegation from the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division in 2015, the club appointed former Harefield United boss Ian Crane as their new manager. Crane had most recently been manager at A.F.C. Hayes before leaving in December 2014. Since 2009 the club remained in the Spartan South Midlands League, reaching a cup final in 2012. For the 2019-20 season the club competes in the Spartan South Midlands Division One under the new management of Ciprian Pintilie and Benjamin Imre.
Once Upon a Time... The Amps Archives The 2014/15 season is one for both of today’s teams to forget as the Amps finished in 21st position and Hillingdon Borough 22nd (bottom) place; this saw both teams relegated from the Premier Division and into Division One where both teams have remained since. Also better forgotten is the 5 -0 defeat the Amps recorded against Oxhey Jets 5 years ago yesterday. A slightly better bit of history for the Town is that they took 6 points off the Hillmen in this season. Langford 0-3 Ampthill Town Attendance: 43 Match Report by Eric Turner After scoring two away wins all year last term Ampthill scored their second win on their travels this year on Tuesday with a 3-0 win at Langford. Town took the game to their hosts in the Mid Beds. derby and Arron Ramsey gave them the lead in the first ten minutes when he beat the home keeper to a Dan Butler cross and slotted it home. Ampthill continued to dictate and might have made more of their better possession with Dan Butler and Arron Ramsey both busy in front of goal and Ben Butler heading against the post from a corner.
Langford also found the crossbar as they were made to work for any opportunities in the first period. Ampthill increased their control on the game when they snapped up two goals in five minutes around the hour mark. First Michael Draycott sent a free kick into the area and it found the net off a home defender and soon after Carl Ramsey finished after Dan Butler outpaced the home keeper. Town had opportunities for more with Ross Airson firing over and Connor Saunders shooting across the goal while Draycott and Arron Ramsay both kept the home defence fully stretched. Langford staged a late rally to get something from the game but they found Jack Ambler on top form on his return between the sticks with vital saves to go with some good first half stops. Ampthill's followers enjoyed the second away win in 7 days with more creativity and urgency that was not always on show against Brimsdown. Our next game is at Brimsdown in the Div 1 cup next Wednesday.
