Talk of the Town A Warm Welcome to The Park Stadium Good afternoon and welcome to The Park Stadium for this home league encounter with New Salamis.

An extended warm welcome to the management, players and officials of New Salamis, as well as to today’s match officials. The cover photo for today’s programme was taken by Dave Wilson during our home match here, when we drew with Amersham Town 3-3. Thanks to Dave for giving us permission to use his photo.

put in a strong performance today and then extend that effort to the end of the season. Mathematically the Amps can accumulate a maximum of 59 points this season, which is 6 short of todays visitors current total. The highest the Amps can finish is 3rd at present but realistically anything above 8th would be a surprise, as the clubs at the top continue to collect points on a regular basis.

Since the last match here the Amps have played 2 away matches.

At the bottom of the table, Brimsdown and Park View are in a precarious position as how many sides are relegated at the end of the season is open to interpretation.

A Wednesday night match at the home of Enfield Town was played against today’s opponents in what can only be described as one sided.

Interestingly, the next two matches for Ampthill Town are away to these clubs. Brimsdown next Saturday, on 21st March and Park View the following Wednesday, 25th March.

Ampthill took the lead in this match through a smart finish by Connor Saunders but then the flow of the match changed and the hosts scored ten without reply. With so many development players having to step in due to injuries and suspensions to first team regulars, it was always going to be a difficult night, but the sending off of Ethan Clarke turned a difficult task into a long uphill slog.

So whilst the Amps league position is likely to be mid-table they could have a considerable say on who exits this division through the trap door.

Three days later the Amps were on the road again, this time at mid-table FC Broxbourne Borough.

The match ended in a 3-0 defeat and means that the last win for Ampthill was back on the 1st February. The best way to right so many wrongs will be to

Last season the bottom 2 were relegated to step 7. Codicote and Hatfield Town were the unlucky 2, but Codicote have applied to return to step 6 next season. Again whether they are to be successful or not is unlikely to be known until the leagues committee release their member details. As always, your support is greatly appreciated, and here’s to you leaving The Park Stadium having been fully entertained. Enjoy the match. Up the Amps!

The jewel in the crown is undoubtedly the Art Deco cafe, which includes access to an elevated stand and contains Butler’s Bar (well named) which serves real ale from the New River Brewery. The question I would have is how easy it would be to upgrade the ground should promotion be attained, but the existing stands could presumably be widened.

Around the Club... Latest Club news

A couple of pieces of good news to share from around the club. Firstly, congratulations to First Team Assistant Manager Lee Hawkes (pictured right) who has completed his UEFA B License. Also congratulations to Ampthill Town U18’s who have reached the final of the League Cup. The report that follows is from their manager Paul Hankey about their semi-final match.

Ampthill U18 v Woburn and Wavendon U18 The 2 teams had met just the week before in a hard fought end to end match that ended 3-3. It was uncertain if the match would be played due to the heavy rain but late Friday the pitch inspection declared it fit to play. Both teams fancied their chances of progressing into the final. Woburn took an early lead and Dimbleby quickly equalised lifting the ball over the keeper, assisted by O’Donnell. Dimbleby came off injured and was replaced by Doherty who found himself on the score sheet twice, his first due to his hard work and high press and the second a tap in at the far post after a great assist from Bateson. Ampthill were 3-1 up but as half time approached Woburn scored again just on half time. 3-2. Second half Woburn came out strong and determined and equalised early on. The game became a battle with Woburn having the better chances. Ampthill made changes bringing O’Donnell back on. He started to create chances going forward and played the ball through to Harmer-Hankey who calmly slotted it past an advancing keeper. 4-3. Woburn tried to get back into the game and in doing so left themselves open to attack. Bateson played the ball up to Doherty who went around the keeper for his 3rd of the day. 5-3. Final score. Lots of good individual performances and a great team performance. Well done to captain Callum Wright who again led by example. Man of the match joe Doherty. Thanks to chairman Gary for making the pitch available. Ampthill U18’s now face Crawley Green in the final.

Ampthill Town Football Club The History Pages Ampthill Town Football Club dates back to the 1880’s, with reliable league records available from the 1950’s.

The club joined the South Midlands League at the start of the 1951/52 season; winning this league in 1959/60 (losing only two league matches all season) and were then runners-up in the following season. The Amps finished bottom of the South Midlands Premier Division in the 1964/65 season and started the following season in the United Counties League Division Two.

This prolonged stay ended at the end of the 1986/87 season when the club finished bottom of the league, winning just one match all season and finishing on a dreary 4 points (when it was 2 points for a win) and were relegated to UCL Div One. The club re-joined South Midlands League in Division One for the 1991/92 season. Then again as part of the reorganisation in 1993/94 Ampthill Town joined the newly formed Senior Division.

In 1997/98 the Amps were founder members of the Spartan South A few mid-table finishes followed and Midlands League Senior Division, but this season ended with relegation to at the end of the 1968/69 season, Division One with 16 points from 30 after a sixth place finish they were matches. promoted to UCL Division One. In 1972 the United Counties Division One was renamed the United Counties Premier Division. From the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties the club remained in the UCL Premier Division.

They bounced straight back and were promoted as runners-up, then followed this up with a runners-up place in the Senior Division at the end of the 1999/2000 season.

In 2001 the Senior Division was renamed Division One and this is where the club remained until 2011/12, when they finished runners up and were promoted to the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division. A fifth-place finish was followed by collecting the runners up medals in 2013/14. The club went from finishing second, to finishing second bottom and were relegated to SSML Division One. Finishing fourteenth for 3 consecutive seasons. That run was ended last season (2018/19) with a tenth-place finish.

early part of the 2018/19 season soon dissipated as results improved immediately. In the closing couple of months of the campaign Town won seven of their last nine league games with their only defeats coming at champions Harefield United and Buckingham Athletic. Among their wins was an incredible 11-0 win over Broxbourne Borough with Jamie Cerminara scoring five and Brandon Carney four, including a second half hat-trick. Ampthill also made it to the North Beds Charity cup final where they lost to Biggleswade FC.

Ampthill’s best FA Vase performance With 4 promotion places up for grabs to date is a quarter final appearance at the end of this season there will be in 2013/14 when losing to Eastbourne United Association. In the even greater emphasis on pushing same competition in 2017 they won onwards, as the club makes no 10-0 at New College Swindon. Other changes include: 

Clearer wording for ‘handball’.

Attacking team players must be at least 1m away from a defensive ‘wall’.

The goalkeeper only has to have one foot on the goal line at a penalty kick.

New dropped ball procedure.

Substitutes – Law 3 A player who is being substituted must leave by the nearest point on the touchline/goal line. So players will now have to think twice about how they exit the pitch and, not only that, they must also make their way straight to the technical area or dressing room after being subbed, or risk being sanctioned for unsporting behaviour. Dropped Ball – Law 8 & 9 If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper. If play is stopped outside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for one player of the team that last touched the ball at the point of the last touch. In all cases, all the other players (of both teams) must be at least 4m (4.5yds) away. If the ball touches the referee (or another match official) and goes into the goal, team possession changes or a promising attack starts, a dropped ball is awarded. Handball – Law 12 Deliberate handball remains an offence. The following ‘handball’ situations, even if accidental, will be a free kick: 1. the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm 2. a player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touches their hand/arm and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity 3. the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger 4. the ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm)

Penalty Kick – Law 14 The team’s penalty taker can have (quick) treatment/assessment and then take the kick. The goalkeeper must not be touching the goalposts/crossbar/nets; they must not be moving.

The goalkeeper must have at least part of one foot on/in line with the goal line when the kick is taken; cannot stand behind the line. Goalkeepers are not permitted to stand in front of or behind the line. As the kicker can ‘stutter’ in the run, it is reasonable that the goalkeeper can take one step in anticipation of the kick.

Team Officials – Law 5 A team official guilty of misconduct will be shown a YC (caution) or RC (sending-off); if the offender cannot be identified, the senior coach who is in the technical area at the time will receive the YC/RC. Goal Kick – Law 16

The ball is in play once the kick is taken; it can be played before leaving the penalty area. Opponents must remain outside the penalty area until the ball is in play. Goal Celebrations – Law 12 A Yellow Card for an ‘illegal’ celebration (e.g. removing the shirt) remains even if the goal is disallowed.

Kick-Off – Law 8 The team that wins the toss can now choose to take the kick-off or which goal to attack (previously they only had the choice of which goal to attack) Medical Breaks – Law 7

Difference between ‘cooling’ breaks (90 secs – 3 mins) and ‘drinks’ breaks (max 1 min). In the interests of player safety, competition rules may allow, in certain weather conditions (e.g. high humidity and temperatures), ‘cooling’ breaks (from ninety seconds to three minutes) to allow the body’s temperature to fall; they are different from ‘drinks’ breaks (maximum one minute) which are for rehydration.

Players’ Equipment – Law 4 Multi-coloured/patterned undershirts are allowed if they are the same as the sleeve of the main shirt. Quick Free Kick and YC/RC – Law 12 If the referee is about to issue a YC/RC but the non-offending team takes the free kick quickly and creates a goal-scoring opportunity, the referee can delay the YC/RC until the next stoppage if the offending team was not distracted by the referee. Temporary Dismissals In addition to these law changes, the 2019/20 season will see the introduction of sin bins (formally named temporary dismissals) from step 5 (Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division level) down. These are explained in more detail on the next page.
