Talk of the Town A Warm Welcome to The Park Stadium Good evening and welcome to The Park Stadium for this home league encounter with Amersham Town.
An extended warm welcome to the management, players and officials of Amersham Town, as well as to tonight’s match officials. The cover photo for tonight’s programme was taken by Aaron Livo during our home match here, when we beat Enfield Borough 1-0. Thanks to Aaron for giving us permission to use another of his photos. Tonight’s match comes a few days after Saturdays home defeat against Rayners Lane. Playing another match so soon after a defeat gives the team the perfect opportunity to bounce back and right the wrongs. Amersham Town come into tonight’s match on the back of a victory, having beaten Enfield Borough away from home 1-0 on Saturday. They will prove a difficult team to break down and the Amps will have their work cut out if they want to take all 3 points tonight. Other results on Saturday mean that Town come into tonight’s match still in 10th position. Whilst the gap to league leaders has been increased to 28 points, the gap to bottom placed Brimsdown is still 22 points. Losing to 4th placed Rayners Lane means that the gap between the Amps 34 points and Rayners Lane tally is now 15 points, but there are still a lot of points to be played for. The number of matches played by teams in Spartan South Midlands League Division One ranges from 22 games (played by Buckingham
Athletic) and 29 matches (played by Shefford Town & Campton). This means that the better indication of how teams are doing this season is shown by the league table on page 4, where PPG (Points Per Game) ranking is included within the league table. After tonight’s match the Amps have three consecutive away matches; Park View on Saturday 29th February, New Salamis on Wednesday 4th March and FC Broxbourne Borough on Saturday 7th March. Returning to the Park Stadium on Saturday 14th March to play New Salamis. Hopefully by the time we return here to play New Salamis the wet weather will have been replaced by glorious sunshine and the groundsman will be able to stop fretting about the weather forecast. Talking of groundsmen, it is worth thanking all groundsmen that give up so much of their spare time to make sure all these non-league matches get played and the lack of postponements at the Park Stadium is testament to the effort put in here. This appreciation could stretch right across this league as the number of postponements is minimal and only the worst of storms in recent weeks has caused any real impact on the match. As always, your support is greatly appreciated, and here’s to you leaving The Park Stadium having been fully entertained. Enjoy the match. Up the Amps!

Amps On The Road... Away Day Match Reports 1st February 2020 League Shefford Town & Campton 0 Ampthill Town 2 The Amps went to higher placed Shefford Town & Campton and came away with all 3 points. Both goals were scored by Danny Butler, as he takes his league goals tally to 6 for the season. The win didn’t see Ampthill Town move any higher up the table but the gap to the teams higher up the table has been reduced as several of those teams dropped points.

Around the Club... Latest Club news
A couple of pieces of good news to share from around the club. Firstly, congratulations to First Team Assistant Manager Lee Hawkes (pictured right) who has completed his UEFA B License. Also congratulations to Ampthill Town U18’s who have reached the final of the League Cup. The report that follows is from their manager Paul Hankey about their semi-final match.
Ampthill U18 v Woburn and Wavendon U18 The 2 teams had met just the week before in a hard fought end to end match that ended 3-3. It was uncertain if the match would be played due to the heavy rain but late Friday the pitch inspection declared it fit to play. Both teams fancied their chances of progressing into the final. Woburn took an early lead and Dimbleby quickly equalised lifting the ball over the keeper, assisted by O’Donnell. Dimbleby came off injured and was replaced by Doherty who found himself on the score sheet twice, his first due to his hard work and high press and the second a tap in at the far post after a great assist from Bateson. Ampthill were 3-1 up but as half time approached Woburn scored again just on half time. 3-2. Second half Woburn came out strong and determined and equalised early on. The game became a battle with Woburn having the better chances. Ampthill made changes bringing O’Donnell back on. He started to create chances going forward and played the ball through to Harmer-Hankey who calmly slotted it past an advancing keeper. 4-3. Woburn tried to get back into the game and in doing so left themselves open to attack. Bateson played the ball up to Doherty who went around the keeper for his 3rd of the day. 5-3. Final score. Lots of good individual performances and a great team performance. Well done to captain Callum Wright who again led by example. Man of the match joe Doherty. Thanks to chairman Gary for making the pitch available. Ampthill U18’s now face Crawley Green in the final.

The club was formed in the Crown Hotel at a meeting on 13 October 1890. The meeting was chaired by E. B. Cooper, headmaster of Dr Challoner's Grammar School, who had been recommended to the school by W. G. Grace. The club rules were agreed four days later, and the club's first match took place in November, with Amersham losing 2 –1 to Wycombe Marsh at Barn Meadow. In 1902–03 the club won the Wycombe and District Combination League. After World War I they were league champions again in 1919–20 and 1920–21. In 1923 the club joined Division Two of the Spartan League, where they remained until leaving the league in 1929. They re-joined the league in 1935 and were placed in Division Two West. Following World War II the club did not re-join the league in 1945–46. They became members of Division Two of the Great Western Combination in 1949. In 1953 the club were founder members of the Hellenic League, winning the inaugural League Cup in 1953–54. The club's reserve team also joined the league in 1956, playing in Division One until 1960. The club finished bottom of the Premier Division in 1961 and would have been relegated to Division One, but switched to the London League for the 1961–62 season. However, after just one season in the London League they returned to the Hellenic League and were placed in Division One. They won Division One in 1962–63, earning promotion to the Premier Division, where they were league champions the following season. After finishing as runners-up in 1964–65 and 1965–66 the club went into decline, and were relegated to Division One B at the end of the 1970–71 season, in which they finished bottom of the Premier Division. In 1972 the club switched to the Spartan League, finishing
bottom of the able in the following three seasons. In 1975 the league was expanded to two divisions following a merger with the Metropolitan–London League and was renamed the London Spartan League. Amersham were placed in Division Two. After finishing as runners-up in 1979–80 they were promoted to the renamed Premier Division. Under the managerial guidance of Paul Pitfield, the club remained in the Premier Division until 1997 - its highest ever league standing when the Spartan League (a name it had reverted to in 1987) merged with the South Midlands League to form the Spartan South Midlands League. Placed in the Premier Division South, they finished second from bottom in 1997–98 and were placed in the Senior Division for the 1998–99 season. The division was renamed Division One prior to the start of the 2001–02 season, in which Amersham finished bottom of the table and were relegated to Division Two. Despite finishing second-from-bottom of Division Two in 2003–04, the club were promoted to Division One as the division was short of teams and they were one of the few clubs in Division Two to have floodlights, a requirement to meet the ground grading criteria. They remained in Division One until a last-place finish in 2014–15 saw them relegated to Division Two. The following season saw them finish twelfth, and although they were initially thought to have been promoted back to Division One due to clubs finishing above them having failed ground grading rules, this was later reversed and the club remained in Division Two.

Development Corner Latest News from The Dev Last weekends Ampthill Town Development cup semi-final at home to Henlow was postponed thanks to Storm Dennis, but the tie was finally played on Saturday. The venue had to be reversed due to the first team game against Rayners Lane and the development side travelled to Henlow, giving up home advantage to get the tie played. With a number of players missing due to County Cup eligibility rulings, the dev side were beaten 3-0 by a much more experienced Henlow side. The cup run and postponements earlier in the season had already put pressure on the fixtures secretary and last weeks postponement guarantees some midweek football for the dev side in March and April this season.

Ampthill Town Football Club The History Pages Ampthill Town Football Club dates back to the 1880’s, with reliable league records available from the 1950’s.
The club joined the South Midlands League at the start of the 1951/52 season; winning this league in 1959/60 (losing only two league matches all season) and were then runners-up in the following season. The Amps finished bottom of the South Midlands Premier Division in the 1964/65 season and started the following season in the United Counties League Division Two.
This prolonged stay ended at the end of the 1986/87 season when the club finished bottom of the league, winning just one match all season and finishing on a dreary 4 points (when it was 2 points for a win) and were relegated to UCL Div One. The club re-joined South Midlands League in Division One for the 1991/92 season. Then again as part of the reorganisation in 1993/94 Ampthill Town joined the newly formed Senior Division.
In 1997/98 the Amps were founder members of the Spartan South A few mid-table finishes followed and Midlands League Senior Division, but this season ended with relegation to at the end of the 1968/69 season, Division One with 16 points from 30 after a sixth place finish they were matches. promoted to UCL Division One. In 1972 the United Counties Division One was renamed the United Counties Premier Division. From the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties the club remained in the UCL Premier Division.
They bounced straight back and were promoted as runners-up, then followed this up with a runners-up place in the Senior Division at the end of the 1999/2000 season.
In 2001 the Senior Division was renamed Division One and this is where the club remained until 2011/12, when they finished runners up and were promoted to the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division. A fifth-place finish was followed by collecting the runners up medals in 2013/14. The club went from finishing second, to finishing second bottom and were relegated to SSML Division One. Finishing fourteenth for 3 consecutive seasons. That run was ended last season (2018/19) with a tenth-place finish.
early part of the 2018/19 season soon dissipated as results improved immediately. In the closing couple of months of the campaign Town won seven of their last nine league games with their only defeats coming at champions Harefield United and Buckingham Athletic. Among their wins was an incredible 11-0 win over Broxbourne Borough with Jamie Cerminara scoring five and Brandon Carney four, including a second half hat-trick. Ampthill also made it to the North Beds Charity cup final where they lost to Biggleswade FC.
Ampthill’s best FA Vase performance With 4 promotion places up for grabs to date is a quarter final appearance at the end of this season there will be in 2013/14 when losing to Eastbourne United Association. The 133rd AGM of The International Football Association Board (The IFAB) held in Aberdeen, Scotland on 2 March 2019 approved a number of amendments to, and clarifications of, the Laws of the Game for 2019/20. Three changes were approved following 2 years of worldwide experiments; •
The introduction of yellow and red cards for misconduct by team officials.
•
A player being substituted leaving the field at the nearest point on the boundary line.
•
A goal kick and a free kick for the defending team in their own penalty area, the ball is in play as soon the kick is taken (it can be played before it leaves the penalty area).
Other changes include:
Clearer wording for ‘handball’.
Attacking team players must be at least 1m away from a defensive ‘wall’.
The goalkeeper only has to have one foot on the goal line at a penalty kick.
New dropped ball procedure.
Substitutes – Law 3 A player who is being substituted must leave by the nearest point on the touchline/goal line. So players will now have to think twice about how they exit the pitch and, not only that, they must also make their way straight to the technical area or dressing room after being subbed, or risk being sanctioned for unsporting behaviour. Dropped Ball – Law 8 & 9 If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper. If play is stopped outside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for one player of the team that last touched the ball at the point of the last touch. In all cases, all the other players (of both teams) must be at least 4m (4.5yds) away. If the ball touches the referee (or another match official) and goes into the goal, team possession changes or a promising attack starts, a dropped ball is awarded. Handball – Law 12 Deliberate handball remains an offence. The following ‘handball’ situations, even if accidental, will be a free kick: 1. the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm 2. a player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touches their hand/arm and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity 3. the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger 4. the ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm)
Penalty Kick – Law 14 The team’s penalty taker can have (quick) treatment/assessment and then take the kick. The goalkeeper must not be touching the goalposts/crossbar/nets; they must not be moving.
The goalkeeper must have at least part of one foot on/in line with the goal line when the kick is taken; cannot stand behind the line. Goalkeepers are not permitted to stand in front of or behind the line. As the kicker can ‘stutter’ in the run, it is reasonable that the goalkeeper can take one step in anticipation of the kick.
Team Officials – Law 5 A team official guilty of misconduct will be shown a YC (caution) or RC (sending-off); if the offender cannot be identified, the senior coach who is in the technical area at the time will receive the YC/RC. Goal Kick – Law 16
The ball is in play once the kick is taken; it can be played before leaving the penalty area. Opponents must remain outside the penalty area until the ball is in play. Goal Celebrations – Law 12 A Yellow Card for an ‘illegal’ celebration (e.g. removing the shirt) remains even if the goal is disallowed.
Kick-Off – Law 8 The team that wins the toss can now choose to take the kick-off or which goal to attack (previously they only had the choice of which goal to attack) Medical Breaks – Law 7
Difference between ‘cooling’ breaks (90 secs – 3 mins) and ‘drinks’ breaks (max 1 min). In the interests of player safety, competition rules may allow, in certain weather conditions (e.g. high humidity and temperatures), ‘cooling’ breaks (from ninety seconds to three minutes) to allow the body’s temperature to fall; they are different from ‘drinks’ breaks (maximum one minute) which are for rehydration.
Players’ Equipment – Law 4 Multi-coloured/patterned undershirts are allowed if they are the same as the sleeve of the main shirt. Quick Free Kick and YC/RC – Law 12 If the referee is about to issue a YC/RC but the non-offending team takes the free kick quickly and creates a goal-scoring opportunity, the referee can delay the YC/RC until the next stoppage if the offending team was not distracted by the referee. Temporary Dismissals In addition to these law changes, the 2019/20 season will see the introduction of sin bins (formally named temporary dismissals) from step 5 (Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division level) down. These are explained in more detail on the next page.
