Talk of the Town A Warm Welcome to The Park Stadium Good afternoon and welcome to The Park Stadium for this home league encounter with Rayners Lane.
An extended warm welcome to the management, players and officials of Rayners Lane, as well as to today’s match officials. The cover photo for today’s programme was taken by Aaron Livo during our home match here, when we beat Enfield Borough 1-0. Thanks to Aaron for giving us permission to use another of his photos. Rayners Lane arrive in Bedfordshire on the back of some impressive performances and it is no surprise to see them up there looking to claim one of the top 4 places, and with it promotion to the Premier Division.
Having said that, with the planned reorganisation it is unlikely that they will end up in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division next season, which itself looks to be moving closer to the South Midlands! Last time out for the Amps it was a 2-2 draw away to Buckingham Athletic in a match where ill discipline was a major factor and the outcome of the match could have been a lot different, had discipline been better. The Amps didn’t play last Saturday, not because of Storm Dennis but because of the fixture scheduling. After the weekends results Town are in exactly mid-table; 22 points clear of bottom side Brimsdown and 25 points behind league leaders St Panteleimon. Without looking to over-analyse as there are
many other factors at play but to highlight Ampthill’s inconsistencies, a 4-1 loss to third from bottom Langford was followed up by a draw away to league leaders St Panteleimon and a win against 4th placed Shefford Town & Campton came before a draw against fourth from bottom London Tigers. Rayners Lane on the flip side, look to be much more consistent and currently sit 4th following Tuesday nights win against London Lions. The Amps are back at home again on Tuesday night when Amersham Town are the visitors to the Park Stadium. Amersham have stumbled a little of late but will be arriving in Bedfordshire keen to build on their 6-4 win against Ampthill a few weeks ago.
That home match is then followed by 3 consecutive away games. A special mention to fellow Spartan South Midlands League side Leighton Town who have made it through to the quarter finals of the FA Vase. Former Amps goalkeeper Brad Kirkwood was instrumental in Leighton progressing against Bradford Town 3-1 according to reports. They have been given another away tie; this time away to Corinthian of the Southern Counties East League Premier Division; match will be played on Saturday 29th February. As always, your support is greatly appreciated, and here’s to you leaving The Park Stadium having been fully entertained. Enjoy the match. Up the Amps!

Amps On The Road... Away Day Match Reports 1st February 2020 League Shefford Town & Campton 0 Ampthill Town 2 The Amps went to higher placed Shefford Town & Campton and came away with all 3 points. Both goals were scored by Danny Butler, as he takes his league goals tally to 6 for the season. The win didn’t see Ampthill Town move any higher up the table but the gap to the teams higher up the table has been reduced as several of those teams dropped points.

Around the Club... Latest Club news
A couple of pieces of good news to share from around the club. Firstly, congratulations to First Team Assistant Manager Lee Hawkes (pictured right) who has completed his UEFA B License. Also congratulations to Ampthill Town U18’s who have reached the final of the League Cup. The report that follows is from their manager Paul Hankey about their semi-final match.
Ampthill U18 v Woburn and Wavendon U18 The 2 teams had met just the week before in a hard fought end to end match that ended 3-3. It was uncertain if the match would be played due to the heavy rain but late Friday the pitch inspection declared it fit to play. Both teams fancied their chances of progressing into the final. Woburn took an early lead and Dimbleby quickly equalised lifting the ball over the keeper, assisted by O’Donnell. Dimbleby came off injured and was replaced by Doherty who found himself on the score sheet twice, his first due to his hard work and high press and the second a tap in at the far post after a great assist from Bateson. Ampthill were 3-1 up but as half time approached Woburn scored again just on half time. 3-2. Second half Woburn came out strong and determined and equalised early on. The game became a battle with Woburn having the better chances. Ampthill made changes bringing O’Donnell back on. He started to create chances going forward and played the ball through to Harmer-Hankey who calmly slotted it past an advancing keeper. 4-3. Woburn tried to get back into the game and in doing so left themselves open to attack. Bateson played the ball up to Doherty who went around the keeper for his 3rd of the day. 5-3. Final score. Lots of good individual performances and a great team performance. Well done to captain Callum Wright who again led by example. Man of the match joe Doherty. Thanks to chairman Gary for making the pitch available. Ampthill U18’s now face Crawley Green in the final.

Rayners Lane Football Club was established in 1933. By the 1960s the club had joined the Spartan League. The club left the league in 1970, but returned for two seasons between 1973 and 1975, during which time they reached the Second Round of the FA Vase. They joined the Hellenic Football League Division One in 1978, winning the league in 1981–82 and gaining promotion to the Premier Division. During the late 1980s and early 1990s the club entered the FA Cup, reaching the Second Qualifying Round in 1992–93. The club remained in the Premier Division until being relegated in 1994 due to not having floodlights. After two seasons in Division One, Rayners Lane left the Hellenic League and joined the Middlesex League. In 1998, the club joined the Chiltonian League Premier

Development Corner Latest News from The Dev Whilst the Ampthill Town first team avoided getting caught up with last weekends Storm Dennis, it was the cause for the postponement of the Development teams home cup semi-final against Henlow. Being a county cup match it does take precedence over everything else for the team concerned and as such the development teams league match today has been postponed to enable the cup match to be rescheduled. With the first team at home, the development side have given up home advantage and today they travel to Henlow, weather permitting. The cup run and postponements earlier in the season had already put pressure on the fixtures secretary and last weeks postponement guarantees some midweek football for the dev side in March and April this season. 31 Aug

Ampthill Town Football Club The History Pages Ampthill Town Football Club dates back to the 1880’s, with reliable league records available from the 1950’s.
The club joined the South Midlands League at the start of the 1951/52 season; winning this league in 1959/60 (losing only two league matches all season) and were then runners-up in the following season. The Amps finished bottom of the South Midlands Premier Division in the 1964/65 season and started the following season in the United Counties League Division Two.
This prolonged stay ended at the end of the 1986/87 season when the club finished bottom of the league, winning just one match all season and finishing on a dreary 4 points (when it was 2 points for a win) and were relegated to UCL Div One. The club re-joined South Midlands League in Division One for the 1991/92 season. Then again as part of the reorganisation in 1993/94 Ampthill Town joined the newly formed Senior Division.
In 1997/98 the Amps were founder members of the Spartan South A few mid-table finishes followed and Midlands League Senior Division, but this season ended with relegation to at the end of the 1968/69 season, Division One with 16 points from 30 after a sixth place finish they were matches. promoted to UCL Division One. In 1972 the United Counties Division One was renamed the United Counties Premier Division. From the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties the club remained in the UCL Premier Division.
They bounced straight back and were promoted as runners-up, then followed this up with a runners-up place in the Senior Division at the end of the 1999/2000 season.
In 2001 the Senior Division was renamed Division One and this is where the club remained until 2011/12, when they finished runners up and were promoted to the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division. A fifth-place finish was followed by collecting the runners up medals in 2013/14. The club went from finishing second, to finishing second bottom and were relegated to SSML Division One. Finishing fourteenth for 3 consecutive seasons. That run was ended last season (2018/19) with a tenth-place finish.
early part of the 2018/19 season soon dissipated as results improved immediately. In the closing couple of months of the campaign Town won seven of their last nine league games with their only defeats coming at champions Harefield United and Buckingham Athletic. Among their wins was an incredible 11-0 win over Broxbourne Borough with Jamie Cerminara scoring five and Brandon Carney four, including a second half hat-trick. Ampthill also made it to the North Beds Charity cup final where they lost to Biggleswade FC.
Ampthill’s best FA Vase performance With 4 promotion places up for grabs to date is a quarter final appearance at the end of this season there will be in 2013/14 when losing to Eastbourne United Association. In the even greater emphasis on pushing same competition in 2017 they won onwards, as the club makes no 10-0 at New College Swindon. The secrets of their desire to be back club have made several appearances playing in the Premier Division. in the FA Cup too, where the best Paul Blackman was appointed progress made is to the 1st qualifying manager in February 2019 and the round on 4 occasions. disappointment experienced in the
The 133rd AGM of The International Football Association Board (The IFAB) held in Aberdeen, Scotland on 2 March 2019 approved a number of amendments to, and clarifications of, the Laws of the Game for 2019/20. Three changes were approved following 2 years of worldwide experiments; •
The introduction of yellow and red cards for misconduct by team officials.
•
A player being substituted leaving the field at the nearest point on the boundary line.
•
A goal kick and a free kick for the defending team in their own penalty area, the ball is in play as soon the kick is taken (it can be played before it leaves the penalty area).
Other changes include:
Clearer wording for ‘handball’.
Attacking team players must be at least 1m away from a defensive ‘wall’.
The goalkeeper only has to have one foot on the goal line at a penalty kick.
New dropped ball procedure.
Substitutes – Law 3 A player who is being substituted must leave by the nearest point on the touchline/goal line. So players will now have to think twice about how they exit the pitch and, not only that, they must also make their way straight to the technical area or dressing room after being subbed, or risk being sanctioned for unsporting behaviour. Dropped Ball – Law 8 & 9 If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper. If play is stopped outside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for one player of the team that last touched the ball at the point of the last touch. In all cases, all the other players (of both teams) must be at least 4m (4.5yds) away. If the ball touches the referee (or another match official) and goes into the goal, team possession changes or a promising attack starts, a dropped ball is awarded. Handball – Law 12 Deliberate handball remains an offence. The following ‘handball’ situations, even if accidental, will be a free kick: 1. the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm 2. a player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touches their hand/arm and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity 3. the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger 4. the ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm)
Penalty Kick – Law 14 The team’s penalty taker can have (quick) treatment/assessment and then take the kick. The goalkeeper must not be touching the goalposts/crossbar/nets; they must not be moving.
The goalkeeper must have at least part of one foot on/in line with the goal line when the kick is taken; cannot stand behind the line. Goalkeepers are not permitted to stand in front of or behind the line. As the kicker can ‘stutter’ in the run, it is reasonable that the goalkeeper can take one step in anticipation of the kick.
Team Officials – Law 5 A team official guilty of misconduct will be shown a YC (caution) or RC (sending-off); if the offender cannot be identified, the senior coach who is in the technical area at the time will receive the YC/RC. Goal Kick – Law 16
The ball is in play once the kick is taken; it can be played before leaving the penalty area. Opponents must remain outside the penalty area until the ball is in play. Goal Celebrations – Law 12 A Yellow Card for an ‘illegal’ celebration (e.g. removing the shirt) remains even if the goal is disallowed.
Kick-Off – Law 8 The team that wins the toss can now choose to take the kick-off or which goal to attack (previously they only had the choice of which goal to attack) Medical Breaks – Law 7
Difference between ‘cooling’ breaks (90 secs – 3 mins) and ‘drinks’ breaks (max 1 min). In the interests of player safety, competition rules may allow, in certain weather conditions (e.g. high humidity and temperatures), ‘cooling’ breaks (from ninety seconds to three minutes) to allow the body’s temperature to fall; they are different from ‘drinks’ breaks (maximum one minute) which are for rehydration.
Players’ Equipment – Law 4 Multi-coloured/patterned undershirts are allowed if they are the same as the sleeve of the main shirt. Quick Free Kick and YC/RC – Law 12 If the referee is about to issue a YC/RC but the non-offending team takes the free kick quickly and creates a goal-scoring opportunity, the referee can delay the YC/RC until the next stoppage if the offending team was not distracted by the referee. Temporary Dismissals In addition to these law changes, the 2019/20 season will see the introduction of sin bins (formally named temporary dismissals) from step 5 (Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division level) down. These are explained in more detail on the next page.
