HONOURS 2013-14 | Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Cup Winners 2011-12 2015-16 | Beds Senior Trophy Winners 1998-99 | Bedfordshire Intermediate Cup Winners 1959-60 | South Midlands League Premier Division Champions

Talk of the Town A Warm Welcome to The Park Stadium Good afternoon and welcome to The Park Stadium for this home league encounter with Bedford.

An extended warm welcome to the management, players and officials of Bedford, as well as to today’s match officials. This is the final match for both teams before Christmas, so as well as hoping you enjoy today’s match, everyone at Ampthill Town Football Club would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and however you celebrate the festive period, have an enjoyable one. The expectations on clubs to play on Boxing Day varies across the football pyramid and also between the different leagues. The Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division and Division One is at steps 5 & 6 of the non league system respectively and whilst there are no SSML games being played on Boxing Day some other leagues at the same level will be playing. Therefore the Ampthill Town players won’t be training on Christmas Day but are expected to be in the gym on Christmas Eve and out for a run on Boxing Day. Apparently. With the Christmas period falling during the week this year, there isn’t actually a break from matches as the Amps play today and then travel to Stotfold next Saturday, when we could be visiting Roker Park for the very last time. Stotfold are moving to a new home, with the exact date to be finalised.

We should have actually played today’s visitors a couple of weeks ago in the North Beds Charity Cup but this match has been postponed twice due to a waterlogged pitch. It is worth remembering the lasting damage that playing on a waterlogged pitch can do to the playing surface and we fully understand the reasons for Bedford postponing these matches. This season there does seem to have been an increase in the number of postponements, particularly for Saturday afternoon matches. Whilst not professing to be a weather expert, the wet weather does seem to make an appearance on a Thursday evening and last until late into Friday. These prolonged downpours then scuppering everyone's plans for getting a game of football on. Whenever that North Beds Charity Cup match does go ahead, like today’s match, it is expected to be a close encounter, as all matches between us are. Both of today’s teams will be looking to take maximum points just so that the turkey tastes even better and the bucks fizz goes down even sweeter on Christmas Day. As always, your support is greatly appreciated, and here’s to you leaving The Park Stadium having been fully entertained. Merry Christmas to All. Enjoy the match. Up the Amps!

Amps On The Road... Away Day Match Reports 30th November 2019 League London Tigers 0

Ampthill Town 2 The Amps made the first of two consecutive trips to Spratleys Meadow and came away with all 3 points as they faced the tenants London Tigers. Both of the Amps goals were scored by Jamie Cerminara, as he netted his 14th and 15th league goals of the season. Going into this match the two sides were positioned close together in the league table but a goal for the Amps in either half of the match has meant that the gap has increased.

Saturday 7th December 2019 League Amersham Town 6 Ampthill Town 4 The return visit to Spratleys Meadow to face the landlords Amersham Town produced a lot more goals than the tie the week before, but this encounter saw the Amps leave with no points, despite netting on four occasions.

Jamie Cerminara added a couple more goals to this seasons tally as he has moved onto 17 league goals for the season, only a couple of goals behind the leagues top goal scorers. Also netting for the Amps was Jake Kissiedu who returned to the team after a few weeks out the starting line up. He has scored 3 league goals now this season, which is a

decent 50% strike rate in his 6 league appearances. Conrad Zylko scored for Town for the first time in the league since rejoining the Amps after a few years away at university. The goals for the hosts came courtesy of solo goals for Jack Aldridge and Josiah Johnson, added to by braces from both Reon Thomas and Alec Wallace.

Bedford United were established in 1957, the works team of the printing firm Diemer & Reynolds. In 1971 the club joined Division Three of the United Counties League, which was renamed Division Two the following season. They remained in Division Two until leaving the league in 1979, dropping into the Bedfordshire County League, going on to win Division One in 1979–80. In 1989 they joined Division One of the South Midlands League, becoming a member of the Senior Division following league reorganisation in 1993. In 1995–96 they finished third in the division, earning promotion to the Premier Division. In 1997 the South Midlands League merged with the Spartan League to form the Spartan South Midlands League, with Bedford United placed in the Premier Division North. After finishing 14th in the division in the league's first season, they were placed in the Senior Division the following season.

Development Corner Latest News from The Dev Ampthill Town Development team’s excellent form came to a crushing end last weekend as they lost for the first time in several weeks, being beaten 6-1 away at Sporting Lewsey Park. The unbeaten streak had stretched back to 5th October when they were last beaten, against the same opposition. That October defeat had been followed up with good wins against Cranfield United Reserves and AFC Kempston Town & Bedford College. Then the off pitch shenanigans began on Saturday 9th November when they were due to travel to Bedford SA for a league match but this was postponed a few hours before kick-off. They did play a home match against Stotfold Development a week later. The only goal of the game was scored by Jack Fuller very early on which meant the dev gained the 3 points that saw them move up the table. 31 Aug

The next fortnight saw the Ampthill Dev not play on either Saturday but they did progress to the semifinal of the Beds FA Intermediate Cup. The original tie meant to be played at Totternhoe was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. The following Saturday the pitch passed a late pitch inspection, as the quarter final tie was rescheduled at the expense of a league fixture, but the Amps ended up progressing as Totternhoe Reserves were unable to raise a side. The semi-final draw has been made and the dev side will face fellow Beds County Division 1 side Henlow on Saturday 15th February at home.

After the unplanned break from football they beat Lea Sports PSG 2-1 on 7th December with Tommy Jackson opening the scoring, Lea Sports equalising and then Jack Fuller winning the match with a late penalty.

Ampthill Town Football Club The History Pages Ampthill Town Football Club dates back to the 1880’s, with reliable league records available from the 1950’s.

The club joined the South Midlands League at the start of the 1951/52 season; winning this league in 1959/60 (losing only two league matches all season) and were then runners-up in the following season. The Amps finished bottom of the South Midlands Premier Division in the 1964/65 season and started the following season in the United Counties League Division Two.

This prolonged stay ended at the end of the 1986/87 season when the club finished bottom of the league, winning just one match all season and finishing on a dreary 4 points (when it was 2 points for a win) and were relegated to UCL Div One. The club re-joined South Midlands League in Division One for the 1991/92 season. Then again as part of the reorganisation in 1993/94 Ampthill Town joined the newly formed Senior Division.

In 1997/98 the Amps were founder members of the Spartan South A few mid-table finishes followed and Midlands League Senior Division, but this season ended with relegation to at the end of the 1968/69 season, Division One with 16 points from 30 after a sixth place finish they were matches. promoted to UCL Division One. In 1972 the United Counties Division One was renamed the United Counties Premier Division. From the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties the club remained in the UCL Premier Division.

They bounced straight back and were promoted as runners-up, then followed this up with a runners-up place in the Senior Division at the end of the 1999/2000 season.

In 2001 the Senior Division was renamed Division One and this is where the club remained until 2011/12, when they finished runners up and were promoted to the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division. A fifth-place finish was followed by collecting the runners up medals in 2013/14. The club went from finishing second, to finishing second bottom and were relegated to SSML Division One. Finishing fourteenth for 3 consecutive seasons. That run was ended last season (2018/19) with a tenth-place finish.

early part of the 2018/19 season soon dissipated as results improved immediately. In the closing couple of months of the campaign Town won seven of their last nine league games with their only defeats coming at champions Harefield United and Buckingham Athletic. Among their wins was an incredible 11-0 win over Broxbourne Borough with Jamie Cerminara scoring five and Brandon Carney four, including a second half hat-trick. Ampthill also made it to the North Beds Charity cup final where they lost to Biggleswade FC.

Ampthill’s best FA Vase performance With 4 promotion places up for grabs to date is a quarter final appearance at the end of this season there will be in 2013/14 when losing to Eastbourne United Association. In the even greater emphasis on pushing same competition in 2017 they won onwards, as the club makes no 10-0 at New College Swindon. The 133rd AGM of The International Football Association Board (The IFAB) held in Aberdeen, Scotland on 2 March 2019 approved a number of amendments to, and clarifications of, the Laws of the Game for 2019/20. Three changes were approved following 2 years of worldwide experiments; •

The introduction of yellow and red cards for misconduct by team officials.

A player being substituted leaving the field at the nearest point on the boundary line.

A goal kick and a free kick for the defending team in their own penalty area, the ball is in play as soon the kick is taken (it can be played before it leaves the penalty area).

Other changes include: 

Clearer wording for ‘handball’.

Attacking team players must be at least 1m away from a defensive ‘wall’.

The goalkeeper only has to have one foot on the goal line at a penalty kick.

New dropped ball procedure.

Substitutes – Law 3 A player who is being substituted must leave by the nearest point on the touchline/goal line. So players will now have to think twice about how they exit the pitch and, not only that, they must also make their way straight to the technical area or dressing room after being subbed, or risk being sanctioned for unsporting behaviour. Dropped Ball – Law 8 & 9 If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper. If play is stopped outside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for one player of the team that last touched the ball at the point of the last touch. In all cases, all the other players (of both teams) must be at least 4m (4.5yds) away. If the ball touches the referee (or another match official) and goes into the goal, team possession changes or a promising attack starts, a dropped ball is awarded. Handball – Law 12 Deliberate handball remains an offence. The following ‘handball’ situations, even if accidental, will be a free kick: 1. the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm 2. a player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touches their hand/arm and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity 3. the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger 4. the ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm)

Penalty Kick – Law 14 The team’s penalty taker can have (quick) treatment/assessment and then take the kick. The goalkeeper must not be touching the goalposts/crossbar/nets; they must not be moving.

The goalkeeper must have at least part of one foot on/in line with the goal line when the kick is taken; cannot stand behind the line. Goalkeepers are not permitted to stand in front of or behind the line. As the kicker can ‘stutter’ in the run, it is reasonable that the goalkeeper can take one step in anticipation of the kick.

Team Officials – Law 5 A team official guilty of misconduct will be shown a YC (caution) or RC (sending-off); if the offender cannot be identified, the senior coach who is in the technical area at the time will receive the YC/RC. Goal Kick – Law 16

The ball is in play once the kick is taken; it can be played before leaving the penalty area. Opponents must remain outside the penalty area until the ball is in play. Goal Celebrations – Law 12 A Yellow Card for an ‘illegal’ celebration (e.g. removing the shirt) remains even if the goal is disallowed.

Kick-Off – Law 8 The team that wins the toss can now choose to take the kick-off or which goal to attack (previously they only had the choice of which goal to attack) Medical Breaks – Law 7

Difference between ‘cooling’ breaks (90 secs – 3 mins) and ‘drinks’ breaks (max 1 min). In the interests of player safety, competition rules may allow, in certain weather conditions (e.g. high humidity and temperatures), ‘cooling’ breaks (from ninety seconds to three minutes) to allow the body’s temperature to fall; they are different from ‘drinks’ breaks (maximum one minute) which are for rehydration.

Players’ Equipment – Law 4 Multi-coloured/patterned undershirts are allowed if they are the same as the sleeve of the main shirt. Quick Free Kick and YC/RC – Law 12 If the referee is about to issue a YC/RC but the non-offending team takes the free kick quickly and creates a goal-scoring opportunity, the referee can delay the YC/RC until the next stoppage if the offending team was not distracted by the referee. Temporary Dismissals In addition to these law changes, the 2019/20 season will see the introduction of sin bins (formally named temporary dismissals) from step 5 (Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division level) down. These are explained in more detail on the next page.
