HONOURS 2013-14 | Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Cup Winners 2011-12 2015-16 | Beds Senior Trophy Winners 1998-99 | Bedfordshire Intermediate Cup Winners 1959-60 | South Midlands League Premier Division Champions

Talk of the Town A Warm Welcome to Ampthill Park Good afternoon and welcome to The Park Stadium for our sixth home league match of the season, so soon after we gathered here for the fifth. An extended warm welcome to the management, players and officials of Park View, as well as to today’s match officials. This weekend is Remembrance Weekend as we remember those who gave their tomorrow for our today. To mark this there will be a minute silence before today’s match. Please observe the referee’s instructions. In the last matchday programme there was the introduction of the PPG (Points Per Game) ranking to the league table. Naturally, the more games you win as the season progresses the better your PPG will be. The only midweek match to be played in the Spartan South Midlands League Division One was the match at The Park Stadium between Ampthill Town and Shefford Town & Campton which ended 2-2, after the Amps had led 2-0 at half time. The result on Tuesday night has meant that Town have moved up to ninth place on goal difference, but having played fewer games than the other three teams on 16 points. A win today would see the Amps remain in ninth as they are 4 points behind 8th.

Going into today’s match Ampthill Town have 16 points from 11 games (a PPG of 1.45). Whist visitors Park View are in 19th place taking 9 points from 12 games (a PPG of 0.75). Park View’s league successes this season have been against London Lions away from home in mid-September and against Amersham Town at home last weekend. Neither of the teams Park View have defeated have visited Ampthill Park so far this season, although the Amps did enjoy a 2 -1 win at London Lions back in August. Anyone that follows non-league football (or any level of football) is fully aware that the outcome of matches already played this season have absolutely no bearing on what will happen in the future. There are no easy games in the Spartan league and today’s encounter is no different. There are 5 other Division One matches being played today and the Amps will be looking to close the gap on the teams above them, as they make up a deficiency of games against those teams around them. Your support is greatly appreciated, and here’s to you leaving The Park Stadium today having been fully entertained. Enjoy the match. Up the Amps!

Since we were last here... Away Day Match Reports 26th October 2019 League St Panteleimon 2 Ampthill Town 2 The Amps headed for Berkeley Fields having been beaten by fellow Beds side Langford 4-1 the previous Saturday. The hosts were unbeaten going into this encounter and would have lost for the first time this season, if it wasn’t for a late equaliser. Kieran Brasier had made the step up from the development side, whilst Ryan Wing had been promoted to the senior side and came off the bench. The Amps goals coming courtesy of Ash Mead and a first for the club for Lawrence Burton.

So many questions, too “little” time...

Saturday 2nd November 2019 League

Enfield Borough 3 Ampthill Town 6 Match Review by Chairman Gary Maidment 1-0 - Amps take the lead on 10 mins; long clearance from Tompkins assisted by conditions and it’s spilled by the Enfield keeper and Jamie Cerminara pounces for his first of the day. 2-0 - 15 mins in and a shot from the edge of the area is parried by Enfield 5 and ref awards a penalty; converted by Jamie Cerminara. 2-1 - 22 mins and a counter by Enfield catches Amps out and a low shot to the corner beats the GK. 2-2 - 30 mins. Amps play for offside, not given and Enfield level from their tricky winger who shots high into corner. 3-2 Amps - Saunders bursts through and is brought down on edge of box . Free kick taken by Jamie Cerminara low into left hand corner. 4-2 35 mins. Good possession from Amps, they work the ball out to Burton who burns the defender to drive the ball across the Enfield goal to be met by JC. HT 4-2 Amps 5-2 - 50 mins and it’s that man again; Cerminara receives the ball in the box, evades two tackles and fires the ball low into the net from 15 yards. 6-2 - 60 mins, solid work in midfield, a ball out to Saunders who then finds Cerminara on the penalty spot, he turns his marker and slots low to the keepers right. 6-3 80 mins, after dominating for the last hour the Amps take a breather and Enfield enjoy some possession. Amps keep them at bay but a corner is caught by the wind and swirls into net from a challenge from Enfield 9. FT 6-3 Amps. A thoroughly well deserved win for Amps who controlled the match from start to finish, great performance all round but a double Hattie from Cerminara has got to be congratulated - take a bow son.

Jamie Cerminara scores goals...

Development Corner Latest News from The Dev The Ampthill Town Development side continued their recent fine form with a 4-2 home win against Kempston Athletic last Saturday afternoon.

DEVELOPMENT TEAM FIXTURES & RESULTS

Despite going behind twice, the development side progress to the next round of the Beds FA Intermediate Cup (background image). Their opponents in the quarter finals are yet to be decided, but ties are scheduled to be played on Saturday 23rd November. The Amps went behind to an early Kempston Athletic goal that came about after the Amps had had a good spell of possession. The Amps were back on level terms as Ethan Clarke converted from a corner and this was no more than the Amps deserved. Shortly afterwards the visitors had to make a change as they brought on their only substitute and the teams went in level at half time. Kempston Athletic then re-took the lead from the penalty spot as Ampthill goalkeeper Devon Phelan was adjudged to have brought down the Kempston striker and the spot kick was converted.

The Amps leveller came as the conditions worsened and the pitch became heavy. This was having an impact on the depleted visitors and just after the scores had been levelled they went down to 10 men. Another injury but this time there was no substitute to replace the injured player. The Amps looked the most likely to be the ones preventing the match going to penalties and a quick move from back to front, through the midfield proved that to be the case. Kempston Athletic knew their best chance of progressing was via a penalty shoot out and once the Amps went 4-2 to the good it was game over.

This cup success follows two wins in the league. The opposition in these two matches were very different and presented their own challenges. Cranfield United Reserves play on the same pitch as their first team and there is unlikely to be any better playing surfaces in the Beds County League. The flat pitch suited the Amps playing style, but the hosts are clearly used to playing on such a good surface as they too looked to get the ball on the deck and play football as often as possible. As was shown as the hosts came into the match unbeaten. The 2-1 win was hard fought and just highlights that with the right application and remaining focussed on the game plan then the Amps can beat anyone in this league. The other recent win was a 4-0 home success against AFC Kempston Town Reserves. All 4 goals were scored in the first half; a half in which the Amps failed to apply themselves and had the opposition been of a higher calibre the score line could have easily been reversed. The Amps second half performance was much improved but didn’t yield any goals. But that’s football.

Ampthill Town Football Club The History Pages Ampthill Town Football Club dates back to the 1880’s, with reliable league records available from the 1950’s.

The club joined the South Midlands League at the start of the 1951/52 season; winning this league in 1959/60 (losing only two league matches all season) and were then runners-up in the following season. The Amps finished bottom of the South Midlands Premier Division in the 1964/65 season and started the following season in the United Counties League Division Two.

This prolonged stay ended at the end of the 1986/87 season when the club finished bottom of the league, winning just one match all season and finishing on a dreary 4 points (when it was 2 points for a win) and were relegated to UCL Div One. The club re-joined South Midlands League in Division One for the 1991/92 season. Then again as part of the reorganisation in 1993/94 Ampthill Town joined the newly formed Senior Division.

In 1997/98 the Amps were founder members of the Spartan South A few mid-table finishes followed and Midlands League Senior Division, but this season ended with relegation to at the end of the 1968/69 season, Division One with 16 points from 30 after a sixth place finish they were matches. promoted to UCL Division One. In 1972 the United Counties Division One was renamed the United Counties Premier Division. From the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties the club remained in the UCL Premier Division.

They bounced straight back and were promoted as runners-up, then followed this up with a runners-up place in the Senior Division at the end of the 1999/2000 season.

In 2001 the Senior Division was renamed Division One and this is where the club remained until 2011/12, when they finished runners up and were promoted to the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division. A fifth-place finish was followed by collecting the runners up medals in 2013/14. The club went from finishing second, to finishing second bottom and were relegated to SSML Division One. Finishing fourteenth for 3 consecutive seasons. That run was ended last season (2018/19) with a tenth-place finish.

early part of the 2018/19 season soon dissipated as results improved immediately. In the closing couple of months of the campaign Town won seven of their last nine league games with their only defeats coming at champions Harefield United and Buckingham Athletic. Among their wins was an incredible 11-0 win over Broxbourne Borough with Jamie Cerminara scoring five and Brandon Carney four, including a second half hat-trick. Ampthill also made it to the North Beds Charity cup final where they lost to Biggleswade FC.

Ampthill’s best FA Vase performance With 4 promotion places up for grabs to date is a quarter final appearance at the end of this season there will be in 2013/14 when losing to Eastbourne United Association. In the even greater emphasis on pushing same competition in 2017 they won onwards, as the club makes no 10-0 at New College Swindon. The secrets of their desire to be back club have made several appearances playing in the Premier Division. in the FA Cup too, where the best Paul Blackman was appointed progress made is to the 1st qualifying manager in February 2019 and the round on 4 occasions. disappointment experienced in the

The 133rd AGM of The International Football Association Board (The IFAB) held in Aberdeen, Scotland on 2 March 2019 approved a number of amendments to, and clarifications of, the Laws of the Game for 2019/20. Three changes were approved following 2 years of worldwide experiments; •

The introduction of yellow and red cards for misconduct by team officials.

A player being substituted leaving the field at the nearest point on the boundary line.

A goal kick and a free kick for the defending team in their own penalty area, the ball is in play as soon the kick is taken (it can be played before it leaves the penalty area).

Other changes include: 

Clearer wording for ‘handball’.

Attacking team players must be at least 1m away from a defensive ‘wall’.

The goalkeeper only has to have one foot on the goal line at a penalty kick.

New dropped ball procedure.

Substitutes – Law 3 A player who is being substituted must leave by the nearest point on the touchline/goal line. So players will now have to think twice about how they exit the pitch and, not only that, they must also make their way straight to the technical area or dressing room after being subbed, or risk being sanctioned for unsporting behaviour. Dropped Ball – Law 8 & 9 If play is stopped inside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for the goalkeeper. If play is stopped outside the penalty area, the ball will be dropped for one player of the team that last touched the ball at the point of the last touch. In all cases, all the other players (of both teams) must be at least 4m (4.5yds) away. If the ball touches the referee (or another match official) and goes into the goal, team possession changes or a promising attack starts, a dropped ball is awarded. Handball – Law 12 Deliberate handball remains an offence. The following ‘handball’ situations, even if accidental, will be a free kick: 1. the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm 2. a player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touches their hand/arm and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity 3. the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger 4. the ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm)

Penalty Kick – Law 14 The team’s penalty taker can have (quick) treatment/assessment and then take the kick. The goalkeeper must not be touching the goalposts/crossbar/nets; they must not be moving.

The goalkeeper must have at least part of one foot on/in line with the goal line when the kick is taken; cannot stand behind the line. Goalkeepers are not permitted to stand in front of or behind the line. As the kicker can ‘stutter’ in the run, it is reasonable that the goalkeeper can take one step in anticipation of the kick.

Team Officials – Law 5 A team official guilty of misconduct will be shown a YC (caution) or RC (sending-off); if the offender cannot be identified, the senior coach who is in the technical area at the time will receive the YC/RC. Goal Kick – Law 16

The ball is in play once the kick is taken; it can be played before leaving the penalty area. Opponents must remain outside the penalty area until the ball is in play. Goal Celebrations – Law 12 A Yellow Card for an ‘illegal’ celebration (e.g. removing the shirt) remains even if the goal is disallowed.

Kick-Off – Law 8 The team that wins the toss can now choose to take the kick-off or which goal to attack (previously they only had the choice of which goal to attack) Medical Breaks – Law 7

Difference between ‘cooling’ breaks (90 secs – 3 mins) and ‘drinks’ breaks (max 1 min). In the interests of player safety, competition rules may allow, in certain weather conditions (e.g. high humidity and temperatures), ‘cooling’ breaks (from ninety seconds to three minutes) to allow the body’s temperature to fall; they are different from ‘drinks’ breaks (maximum one minute) which are for rehydration.

Players’ Equipment – Law 4 Multi-coloured/patterned undershirts are allowed if they are the same as the sleeve of the main shirt. Quick Free Kick and YC/RC – Law 12 If the referee is about to issue a YC/RC but the non-offending team takes the free kick quickly and creates a goal-scoring opportunity, the referee can delay the YC/RC until the next stoppage if the offending team was not distracted by the referee. Temporary Dismissals In addition to these law changes, the 2019/20 season will see the introduction of sin bins (formally named temporary dismissals) from step 5 (Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division level) down. These are explained in more detail on the next page.
