October 2023: On The Boulevard

On The Boulevard

OCTOBER 2023

Naples welcomes autumn with cooler and dryer temperatures, but most importantly, we look forward to welcoming the members who are returning for the 2023/2024 season. Marbella’s population is over 160 members, and 30% will experience the true Marbella in a postpandemic and hurricane season for the first time; therefore, we anticipate an active season. The team is preparing their departments and staff for everyone in addition to the influx of family and friends who may be enjoying the high level of service for the first time.

While it is simple to make last-minute dining reservations during the summer, it may be challenging in the months ahead. We recommend that you reserve your tables in advance, especially if you are entertaining. Last year, we introduced alfresco dining on the West Plaza Deck for both lunch and dinner, and it was an immediate success. Once the outside temperatures cool down, we will be offering this dining option again. Kindly make a note that the gentleman will be required to wear a jacket for dinner in the Valencia and Napoli Rooms beginning Monday, October 9th, 2023. Please, you may want to notify your family and friends who are joining you of Marbella’s dress code.

Health and fitness will play a key role this season. We added many exercise and balance options to keep you fit. Try Balance & Stretch, Tai Chi, Posture, Core & More in addition to Mana Holtz’s water aerobics. All classes are geared for both men and women and, incorporate socialization and camaraderie, and will help you to burn calories from our outstanding cuisine.

The work on renovating the residential corridors is underway, and we are delighted to inform you that the project is ahead of schedule. Originally, RD Johnson Construction, Inc. promised a completion date sometime in the first quarter 2024, but are working toward a new completion goal of December 2023 as the installation of the carpet will be earlier than expected. The work began earlier in September in the North tower downward, and demolition is new underway in the South tower.

Naples experienced a long, hot summer, and each of us is excited about bringing a typical season back after several years of isolation and hurricane damage. Let’s have fun and enjoy ourselves!

MANAGER’S MESSAGE

Walk to End Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s isn’t waiting—and neither am I. This year, I’m participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® on Saturday, November 4, to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research.

Will you support my efforts by donating on my fundraising page? Every dollar you donate helps the Alzheimer’s Association® provide care and support to those facing Alzheimer’s and all other dementia and advance critical research. I hope you will stand with me in this fight. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s. Please visit my page at bit.ly/walkendalz

Check donations should be made out to the Alzheimer’s Association. You can mail a check to the Alzheimer’s Association, along with the donation form available on my fundraising page. Or send your check to me, and I can deposit it directly to the Alzheimer’s Association through the Walk to End Alzheimer’s mobile app.

Remember, you may join us on the walk on Saturday, November 4, or donate if you are not here. Thanks to all who have already donated!

Kidney Failure or Chronic Disease

You must have heard the term kidney failure or chronic kidney disease, but what does it mean? Urine may look normal, and you may even go regularly, but you could still have kidney failure—the reduced ability of the kidney to filter our blood.

Kidneys are made of millions of individual units called nephrons. These nephrons are involved in the constant filtering of blood. They keep the good stuff in as the blood flows through them and let the bad stuff out. They also ensure that our body maintains a good balance of fluid and electrolytes. When these functions are affected or reduced, we call it kidney failure or kidney disease.

You may notice no symptoms when it is in the mild to moderate stage. Your doctor is alerted by a routine blood test called creatinine. When the creatinine value increases, it is considered kidney disease or failure.

There are two types of kidney failure: Acute and Chronic. Acute kidney failure happens suddenly when there is a massive insult to the kidneys by an acute blockage of urine flow, severe dehydration, use of toxic drugs, contrast agents, infection, or acute illness. In this setting, kidney functions decrease significantly from normal to severely abnormal within hours to days. If nothing is done, permanent damage can happen, needing dialysis.

On the other hand, chronic kidney

KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS

Meet Harris & Audrey Yett

The more you travel and engage, the more your understanding of history grows, and your knowledge of the world broadens. Ultimately, this understanding also extends inward; you learn about yourself and your true potential and become better equipped to be proactive. Travel improves observational skills, and one develops an affinity for art and culture, rounding out the individual's well-being as it relates to the earth. Harris and Audrey Yett, our featured residents, are the personification of global travel: safari in Africa, the Great Wall of China, climbing Mount Sinai, Tibet, New Zealand, basking in the Caribbean— the list is endless on six continents.

Harris and Audrey met on a blind date, and in 1981, they sealed their union in wedded bliss. The marriage produced seven sons, one daughter, and seven grandkids, including two sets of twins: a blended family bringing different personalities, new interests, and perspectives to the Yett's household. Harris, being the consummate Dad, knew the importance of vacations with the family; he took five of his boys to Alaska on vacation. Audrey was moved by this adventure, which helped to solidify her notion of Harris as a loving father. One of the boys spent two years with the IDF and lived in Israel for eleven years.

As a retired orthopedic surgeon, Harris graduated from Tufts Medical School and led a successful career in orthopedic surgery for 45 years. One highlight of Harris' career was performing surgery on Andre Roussimoff, better known by his ring name Andre the Giant. He was a French professional wrestler and actor known as the world's Eighth Wonder for his great size, which resulted from gigantism caused by excessive growth hormones.

With every successful family, there is a mother. Audrey stayed home for the first 20 years, caring for her family in lockstep with her husband and an equal span as a real estate broker. She loves gardening and history. Having to maintain a second home on Martha's Vineyard for several years, where they met Bill Clinton on the golf course, one can only imagine a life of stability, hard work, and dedication.

In 2000, Harris and Audrey became snowbirds, eventually moving to Naples in 2015. They moved into The Marbella for some months and renovated their unit extensively. We welcome Harris and Audrey, a wonderful couple.

slowly over time and is usually detected by routine blood and urine tests. People with long-standing diabetes, high blood pressure, analgesic use, and autoimmune diseases like lupus can develop a slow decline in kidney function. If nothing is done, this will lead to severe kidney failure and dialysis. If your doctor detects low kidney function, he may ask you to go for further investigations or even refer you to a medical kidney specialist (nephrologist). They will investigate to find out the reason for low kidney function. This may even require a kidney biopsy.

Whatever the cause, you should avoid taking over-the-counter NSAID painkillers like Aleve, Ibuprofen, Motrin, and Naproxen, as they will further damage your kidneys. Tylenol is okay to use. Additionally, you must avoid contrast agents used for radiological examination. If you must have a radiological examination with a contrast agent, you should first notify your kidney doctor for advice.
