2013–2014 ANNUAL REPORT

FOR GOOD. FOREVER.

It’s been a spectacular year of dramatic growth for the Community Foundation. Today, we have 508 funds totaling more than $77 million in assets. Ten years ago, we were giving out roughly $1.8 million a year in grants; in 2013-2014, we distributed nearly $1.3 million in December alone! Growth in assets; growth in grants; growth in service; growth in impact: these have been the cornerstones of our work in the past year. And, this work has been fueled by a spirit of collaboration with donors, nonprofit colleagues, and key community players. (See pages 8-9 for a list of our specific accomplishments in 2013-2014.) On many fronts, the Community Foundation has moved from grantmaker to agenda-setter—assessing the vital needs of Collier County residents, educating existing and potential donors about those needs and the nonprofits that are meeting them most effectively and supporting those nonprofits through a grantmaking process that values access and opportunity for all. Our Foundation’s leadership exhibits a collaborative style that has helped a number of organizations in our community through challenging times and unchartered waters. After a 2013 Labor Day Fire ravaged the Greater Naples YMCA, the Community Foundation moved quickly to establish a fund and to arrange a significant matching support from the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation to start the rebuilding of this community staple. And, we have also been part of exciting new initiatives like the Artificial Reef Project Fund, providing the administrative and financial stewardship services that we do so well and working collaboratively with a variety of organizations and donors to make a positive impact on our local environment and our economy. (Read more about these projects in the Annual Report.) Our mission is to improve the quality of life in Collier County by connecting donors to community needs and providing leadership on critical community issues…for good and forever. We believe that our work contributes to the development of a far more caring and sophisticated philanthropic community. As we move forward, the Community Foundation will continue to convene, collaborate and connect…and be Collier County’s go-to partner in philanthropy.

Donald T. Franke 1921-2013

In the late 1970s, Donald T. Franke moved to Naples with his wife, Helen, and their children where, after retiring from a successful career in Minnesota as a judge and state legislator, he returned to practicing law…for the next 25 years. Don Franke was the consummate giver and, throughout his life, made a commitment to a host of community organizations. In 1983, he incorporated the Naples Area Foundation and, then, teaming with Bill Oberhelman, acquired nonprofit status for the Foundation in 1985. (To put that into context: in 1985, Ronald Reagan was sworn in for a second term and the song We Are the World topped the charts.) Our name was changed to the Community Foundation of Collier County, and in just six months, Don Franke and his board had built an endowment of $300,000 to be, as Don described it, “a constant—and growing—source of funds for special community needs.” For the next 28 years, Don Franke worked tirelessly to build the Community Foundation of Collier County into the prominent and trusted organization that it is today. He gave freely of his financial resources, his time, his ideas, his good humor and his boundless energy. He is our inspiration.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF COLLIER COUNTY

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY FOUNDATION? • We are a collection of charitable funds established by individuals, families, businesses and organizations to help meet local challenges and improve the quality of life in Collier County. • We receive charitable gifts, work with families, individuals, attorneys and estate and financial planners to devise plans that fit every economic situation, ensuring that donors’ charitable contributions are used to the fullest extent and for maximum benefit. • We place those gifts into funds, manage the assets of those funds for growth and make grants from those funds. • We offer several types of funds to help donors achieve their charitable goals while also meeting community needs. • In addition to making grants to agencies and special projects in our community, we identify needs, stimulate resources to address those needs and help Collier County prepare for the future. • Our volunteer board and nine-person staff are committed to understanding donor needs, representing their charitable interests, expertly handling complex gifts, wisely managing charitable funds and leveraging a wealth of community knowledge to increase charitable impact. • We serve as a hub for collaboration between philanthropists, nonprofits and other funding organizations across the community. • We are conveners, collaborators and connectors.

7

✓ OBJECTIVITY The Community Foundation distributes charitable dollars to nonprofits in our county; we are not the end-user. Unrestricted funds are used to support the community’s most important needs and opportunities, while other funds established by donors are designated to benefit our donors’ favorite causes. ✓ STEWARDSHIP When donors establish permanent endowments with us, we make sure that, if a nonprofit organization’s mission changes significantly, funds are reallocated according to the donor’s original intent. ✓ PERMANENCE The Community Foundation was established in 1985 with an endowment of $300,000 and has experienced substantial growth. With an endowment, assets are invested to generate an ongoing source of income year after year, and your legacy will last forever.

THOSE WHO GIVE…

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE PLACE THEY CALL HOME

The Flynns have established a donor advised fund at the Community Foundation.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF COLLIER COUNTY

10

The Flynns have given millions of dollars in financial support and thousands of hours in volunteer time to a host of nonprofit organizations in our region. Both have held board and/or officer positions with a variety of nonprofit organizations including Boys and Girls Club of Collier County, NCH Healthcare System Foundation, Greater Naples Leadership and the Community Foundation of Collier County. Over the years, both have been recognized by many organizations for their dedication; they were honored by Hodges University with the Humanitarian of the Year Award in 2009. Terry is a gregarious man to whom a lot of other adjectives could be ascribed—charming, compassionate, articulate and above all, active. Christine is his gracious and thoughtful partner whose kindness and affection shows in everything she does for the community and for her family. Neither Terry nor Christine have slowed down one bit since their retirement and their shared involvement in the community is characterized by a compassionate nature, strong faith, boundless energy and good humor, a profound understanding of the needs of the people they serve and a sincere desire to share their good fortune with others. The roster of organizations that they serve is impressive. Both Christine and Terry’s participation is sought after by community leaders because of the thoughtful and informed contributions they always bring to the table; both are exemplary at assessing a problem in the context of the larger issues that must be addressed before that single problem can be solved. And, neither shirk from tackling those larger issues with gusto. “Christine and I believe that charitable organizations can change society. Without them, life would not be as good here. Everyone benefits directly or indirectly. And we feel thankful being able to say that we can make the community we live in a better place.” The Flynn’s professional approach to

community service is borne from a life of selfstarting and hard work in the corporate and academic arenas—effort that led to a significant personal success that they share willingly with others. And, as they will tell you, this spirit of giving was ignited in their childhoods by family members who gave selflessly—even when they themselves were in need. One of Christine’s earliest memories of philanthropy came from watching her grandmother sit at the kitchen table writing a check to “someone who needed help.” Christine knew that her grandmother did not have extra resources and that her giving might mean her doing without but, clearly, this was a woman who put others before herself. That was an early inspiration for Christine in many ways. The importance of understanding need is evident in a story that Terry tells about encountering a homeless man on a city street. Rather than pressing a few dollars into his hand and moving on, Terry took the man to a nearby restaurant, talked with him about his situation, and bought his meal. The Flynn’s son, who was with his father and a young boy at the time, asked why Terry had taken that extra step; Terry explained the importance of looking beyond the surface, of finding out about the human being behind the need. That philosophy is a hallmark of the Flynn’s charitable giving to this day. Colleagues describe the Flynns as the standard for excellence in philanthropy. Their creation of a donor advised fund with the Community Foundation has allowed them to effectively and efficiently offer significant financial support and hands-on leadership to a number of organizations that provide human services support, opportunities for young people and protections for at-risk women and girls. “The work that we do through the Foundation allows us to have a broader and more effective reach,” they explained.

“Christine and Terry Flynn are an example of what we all want to be—smart, giving, kind and respected for the positive impact that we have had on our world.” – Eileen Connolly-Keesler President/CEO, Community Foundation

THOSE WHO GIVE…

PHILANTHROPY—THE SECOND ACT In 1868, H.K. Webster founded a small feed grain operation in Lawrence, Massachusetts. A century later, under the leadership of his great-grandsons, Dean and King Webster, Blue Seal Feeds achieved its zenith. It was a full-time job. And, as noted by one of our Essex County Community Foundation colleagues in an article about the Webster family: “When the cousins decided to sell the business built by generations of ancestors, they gained prosperity and freedom; they also lost a large part of their identity.” King recalls that he retired one afternoon and woke up the following morning not knowing exactly what to do next. He realized that he would have to find a new focus for what had always been a very productive life. Weeks later, he learned about a man who helped underprivileged children by providing them with opportunities they would not have had otherwise. Within days, King began crafting a program in Lawrence that shared the goals and methods of the national I Have A Dream project and, over a decade, fostered the spectacular success of that program by helping his Dreamers with everything from reading and computer literacy to arts and crafts, sports, homework assistance, field trips and mountain climbing. When King and his wife, Dee, shifted their home to Naples, they applied all that they had learned from the Lawrence experience and, once again, chose to work in depth with specific schools—Manatee Elementary School and Manatee Middle School. The Manatee schools serve a population of children whose families live at or below the poverty level. English is not the first language in most of these students’ homes. What other children might take for granted—an evening meal, school clothes, a place to study, Internet access, transportation to and from school activities—are not a given for Manatee students. At Manatee Elementary School, working with veteran principal, Wendy Borowski, and Program Director, Pat Sanford, King has provided everything needed to build and maintain a comprehensive and academically-focused after-school program for third, fourth and fifth graders. At Manatee Middle School, working with school leadership and the Boys & Girls

Club of Collier County, King has helped create an after-school model with a curriculum designed for older students. (“We have a debate club!” he noted.) Steve Filosa, a friend of the Webster family, says: “King approaches his philanthropy like the trained engineer that he is. He checks things out for himself. He kicks the tires through regular site visits and in-depth conversations with those involved. King asks hard questions, but always with a view toward improving the organization.” At the Manatee schools, King has absolutely kicked the tires and still does! With the resources from his donor advised fund at the Community Foundation, coupled with his time and attention and his effective partnership with school leadership, he has created a model after-school program—and he hasn’t left anything out. His donor advised fund supports faculty and director compensation; the cost of curriculum materials and supplies and after-school snacks; the activities of and access to Camp Manatee on selected Saturdays; FCAT preparation activities and materials; insurance and other administrative fees; and, a host of incidental costs. And, what’s more, by creating the donor advised fund at the Community Foundation, King is ensuring that the Manatee programs will live on as the Webster’s legacy. Most of all, King has shown everyone at Manatee that someone cares about them—from start to finish. He takes great joy in visiting the students at day’s end, experiencing first-hand all that they have accomplished and seeing the delight on their faces. His motto: the fun is in the finish! King Webster knows that good philanthropy is hard work, and he is as strategic in his approach to charitable giving as he was in building a successful feed business; it’s one of the reasons that he chose the Community Foundation and the donor advised-fund structure for his charitable giving. But he reminds us that true giving is not so much about money as it is about character, commitment, ability and experience. “Money is just one resource. Everybody has their experiences and talents to contribute, as well. These things count, too.”

The Websters have established a donor advised fund/field-of-interest fund at the Community Foundation.

King’s philosophy: “The most important resources you have are your mind, your training, and your character. That is what is going to get you through. With those resources you will do very well.”

THE VALUE OF COLLABORATION

TOGETHER WE CAN DO SO MUCH… When lightning struck the roof in September 2013, it started a fire that heavily damaged the Greater Naples YMCA—the “Y”—an important community asset. Immediately and as a first step, the Community Foundation of Collier County provided a $25,000 grant to the “Y” to hire a capital campaign director, and then created the Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund on behalf of the “Y” to make it easy for the Foundation’s existing donors and the community-at-large to make donations to the fund. After that, the fundraising efforts were anything but typical. “There was no time to plan for it. The Board of the YMCA had not signed up for this,” said John C. Riley, CEO of Naples-based Riley Philanthropy in an article in the Naples Daily News. Mr. Riley, who has worked closely with the “Y” on its campaign over the past 12 months, was the capital campaign director brought to the project by a grant from the Community Foundation. Next, the Community Foundation, whose mission is to bring nonprofits and philanthropists together to meet community needs, introduced the “Y” and promoted its rebuilding project to one of the Foundation’s significant donors, the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation, started by Southwest Florida resident and Best Buy founder, Dick Schulze. The Schulze Family Foundation is based in the Schulze’s home state of Minnesota, where it’s known for supporting education programs, youth development and medical services; now that the Schulzes are Florida residents, they wanted to get involved in helping their new community as well. “The Community Foundation is here to connect donors with nonprofits,” Foundation President and CEO Eileen Connolly-Keesler explains. “Our success in connecting the Schulze family to the “Y” is a perfect example of our

mission in action.” In February 2014, thanks to the collaboration fostered by the Community Foundation and Dick Schulze, the “Y” announced a $1.5 million challenge pledge from the Schulze Family Foundation. To get the entire pledge, the “Y” had to secure at least $1.5 million from other donors by year’s end. As a result of the work of the Community Foundation and the generosity of so many charitable givers, the Greater Naples YMCA has raised $4.8 million in private donations. The Schulze Family Foundation challenge has been met with six-figure donations from Naples-based medical device manufacturer, Arthrex, and the Ray Foundation of Naples, founded by businessman and philanthropist James C. Ray, president of the Aerospace Capital Group…plus a host of anonymous donors and piggy-bank donors from all over the region. What’s next? To pay for what’s under construction now, the “Y” still needs to raise another $1.5 million so that it can finish the project with no new debt. “We’ve got to stay disciplined, raise the funds and complete the project on time,” said Paul Thein, CEO of the Greater Naples YMCA. “Our YMCA is about serving the community and taking on debt doesn’t advance our ability to serve our mission.”

“When people ask us what we do at the Community Foundation, we describe it this way: We convene, we collaborate and we connect. That is exactly what we accomplished at the Greater Naples YMCA.” – Eileen Connolly-Keesler President/CEO, Community Foundation

The Greater Naples YMCA has established an agency endowment fund at the Community Foundation.

COMMUNITY SERVICE: ROTARY BUILDS ITS LEGACY The Rotary Club of Naples—like its counterparts around the world—is a place where professionals share a commitment to the kind of community service that creates positive, lasting change in our communities. Being a Rotarian also means exhibiting responsible leadership—not just doing good work, but also making the most out of every dollar received by participating in thoughtful giving to the community. That is why The Rotary Club of Naples choose the Community Foundation as a place where they could create and build their endowment fund—The Rotary Club of Naples Charitable Foundation—and their legacy. A portion of available earnings from that fund can be spent annually to benefit local Rotary programs like Collier Harvest and Meals of Hope (The Rotary Club of Naples project that has already fed almost 9 million people!) “Our membership does its due diligence. For us, it is very important to support organizations that are having the most significant community impact,” explains this year’s Rotary of Naples president, Rich Ahrens. The Fund can also provide support for one of Rotary International’s most important goals: to eradicate polio. Of course, The Rotary Club of Naples also hosts one of the area’s most enjoyable fall events, The Grape Escape—The Naples Food & Wine Festival on Fifth Avenue South. The Rotary Club of Naples has also placed its scholarship fund with the Community Foundation of Collier County. “We have refreshed the goals and criteria for our scholarship fund,” explains Rotary President, Rich Ahrens. “It is important that we focus on the kids in the middle, the young people who exhibit skills and abilities and interest in their community. They might benefit from going to college—or from other types of post-high school education.” The Rotary has develop a good relationship with school district leaders and guidance professionals to identify students who might not go experience that dream without the Rotary’s assistance. Ahrens added, “We want our scholarships to make a life change—for the recipients and their families.” By placing these two funds at the Community Foundation, The Rotary Club of Naples can accomplish its charitable goals while benefiting from the strategy and

“Our organization has a vision and it is to make a positive impact on our community now and forever.” – Rich Ahrens, The Rotary Club of Naples President

structure that the Community Foundation provides. Eileen Connolly-Keesler adds: “Rotary’s commitment to service is very similar to our own. Rotary transforms its member’s charitable gifts into projects that change lives close to home; so do we. At the same time, The Rotary Club of Naples is taking advantage of our strong financial oversight and investment success to make the most of its members’ contributions.”

The Rotary Club of Naples has established an endowment fund and a scholarship fund at the Community Foundation.

GIFTS

TYPES OF GIFTS Giving Now “I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back.” – Maya Angelou

We work with our donors and their professional advisors to facilitate contributions in many forms: CASH AND MARKETABLE SECURITIES Marketable securities include stocks, bonds and shares of mutual funds. TANGIBLE PERSONAL PROPERTY Give tangible personal property like rare books, furniture and artwork. REAL ESTATE Give your principal residence or vacation home, a farm, a commercial building, a subdivision lot or unimproved land. RETIREMENT PLAN ASSETS Name the Community Foundation as a primary or contingent beneficiary of a qualified retirement plan (i.e. IRA, SEP, 401(k), 403(b), etc.). You may be able to make a larger gift than you anticipate. GIFTS OF LIFE INSURANCE Name the Community Foundation as a primary or contingent beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Giving Later With Planned Gifts Establishing trusts and bequests can be complex. To ensure your gift is properly administered, establish a charitable trust with the assistance of both your legal and financial advisors and the professional staff at the Community Foundation. CHARITABLE TRUSTS • Charitable Remainder Trust By gifting assets to establish a charitable remainder trust, you receive an immediate tax deduction and lifetime income for you or your named beneficiary or beneficiaries. You also reduce or avoid capital gains taxes associated with the gifted asset. Eventually, when the trust’s term is complete, the remaining assets pass on to the Community Foundation. • Charitable Lead Trust Foundation to fulfill the donor’s charitable wishes. A charitable lead trust provides income payments to the Community Foundation for a specified period of time, after which the trust is dispersed to its beneficiaries. CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY This is a way for you to receive guaranteed income for life and an immediate income tax deduction, while at the same time, leaving a charitable legacy.

“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” – Nelson Henderson

THE IMPACT OF GRANTMAKING

BUILDING OUR ECONOMY AND OUR ENVIRONMENT ONE REEF AT A TIME

The Artificial Reef Project is a special project fund at the Community Foundation.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF COLLIER COUNTY

20

“Our commitment to strengthening our “community immediately and forever “is born out of projects like this.” – Eileen Connolly-Keesler, President/CEO, Community Foundation The problem was as vast as the ocean—or, in our case, the Gulf of Mexico. Over time, the reef system in the Gulf waters bordering Collier County in Southwest Florida had been destroyed by hurricanes and shifting currents. For fish and other marine life, there was nowhere to run—or hide—and the impact on Collier County’s environment and tourism industry was significant and growing more severe. Enter Peter Flood, local Naples attorney and dedicated fisherman with a big idea: gather 18,000 tons of clean recycled and donated concrete, sink it 12-30 miles from shore and create six 500-ton reefs, each the size of a football field. Result: a world-class system of reefs where marine life would be restored and grown, recreational divers could explore freely, and environmental scientists could study and learn from the ecology of our region. Peter Flood understood that big projects need big—and diverse— partnerships. He joined forces with world-renowned scientists and with Collier County’s Economic Recovery Task Force to begin the planning. Then, he reached out to the Gulf Tourism and Seafood Promotional Fund set up by BP in the wake of the 2010 oil spill, and also to local city and county governments to apply for the grants that would help make the reefs a reality. The project was awarded $1,315,000—the largest BP grant for a single project—and the permits from each government agency are put in place. Finally, to weave it all together, Flood and the Community Foundation of Collier County joined forces to provide two services: establish the Artificial Reef Project Fund to accept all public and private legacy donations and to administer funds to the City of Naples, City of Marco and Collier County, based on stringent guidelines. At the Community Foundation of Collier County, the Artificial Reef Project is an opportunity for the Foundation to provide the administrative and financial stewardship services that it does so well and to work collaboratively with a variety of organizations and donors to make a positive impact on our local environment and our economy. Experts tells us that fish will start congregating just 12 hours after the reef is created and that the reef has a life expectancy of 800 years. Now, that’s a legacy.

THE IMPACT OF GRANTMAKING

AND THE WINNER IS… Virtuoso Misty Drake Wins the 2014 Turiel Award

THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION CONNECTION This year we provided grants in the amount of $10,000 to The Naples Music Club’s Outreach Program. The Outreach Program includes Middle School Master Classes to 2nd- and 3rd-year middle school students who have never studied music privately; the Haegg Encouragement Award to nurture the talents of gifted students who do not have the means to take private music lessons; and the Piano Program after-school, small-group piano lessons for financially-needy students who attend specific Title 1 schools. The Community Foundation’s grant allowed the Club to expand these programs, including the Naples Music Club’s Scholarship Competition. Talented young violinist Misty Drake took part in that competition and won the 2014 Turiel Award. Read more about the Club, Misty and her accomplishments. We are so pleased to be part of her future. The following article, authored by Marci Seamples, originally appeared in part in è Bella Magazine.

The gold medal. The blue ribbon. The brass ring. In every discipline there exists a singular honor, coveted above all others that the best of the best strive to achieve. For Southwest Florida’s young musicians, that distinction is the Naples Music Club’s Turiel Award. To qualify for the Turiel Award, students take part in the Naples Music Club Scholarship Competition. Students, grades 6 through 12, who live in Collier County, Bonita Springs and Estero are eligible. Each applicant must play or sing two pieces from different musical time periods. At this year’s competition, which was hosted by the Bayshore Cultural and Performing Center (CAPA) during the final concert of the Erich Kunzel Classical series in May, the Naples Music Club awarded a total of 71 scholarships. The top 12th grade winners went on to compete for the Turiel Award. The awards committee had a tremendous task on their hands as one by one, each young virtuoso took the stage and left the audience amazed at their abilities and musical sensibilities.

THE AWARD GOES TO Everyone waited with high anticipation as the committee gathered during intermission to make its final selection. The audience returned to their seats and a hush fell over the auditorium as the announcement was made…the 2014 Turiel was awarded to violinist Misty Drake. “The whole process was a fantastic experience,” says Drake. “You never know why the judges pick who they pick. The past winners have all been very successful. It is such a great honor.” Drake already has many awards and honors to her credit. She was the winner of the Naples Philharmonic Concerto competition three years in a row (2011-2013), placed first in the strings category in the 2013 Jillian Prescott Awards Concerto competition, and was named youth strings winner of the Bach Festival of Southwest Florida from 2010 to 2012. Drake began her musical endeavors at age 3. “My father had been away on a business trip and had stopped in a music store,” she recalls. “He told the shop keeper that his daughter wanted to play the violin. The gentleman at the store came out with a tiny 1/16 violin and told my dad I had to take Suzuki method classes. When he came home, he gave me the violin.” Drake said she took the violin out of the case, played a few notes, and then went to play with her dolls. But she did, in fact, go through the Suzuki method books and evolved into the awardwinning musician she is today.

“Having such a supportive and musically enriched community has shaped me and formed who I am.”

IN GOOD COMPANY Established in 1996 by Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Turiel, the Turiel Award honors the memory of their son Daniel, who throughout the course of his career, was one of three founding members of the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, principal clarinetist of the Southwest Florida Symphony and Naples Concert Band, and founder, president and artistic director of the Gulf Coast Opera Company. This fall, Drake will head to the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. Named the “Hottest School for Music” in the U.S. by Kaplan/Newsweek in 2008, Eastman has consistently been ranked by U.S. News and World Report as a top school for several disciplines, including instrumental performance. Drake chose the school because so many of her mentors in the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra studied there as well. “The Eastman School seems to be one big family,” she says. It’s not surprising that Drake would gravitate toward an institution with such close ties. She is very appreciative of the Naples community and the impact it has had on her education and success thus far.

THE IMPACT OF GRANTMAKING

MINDS THAT MATTER Pioneering Work on the Mental-Health Frontier in Immokalee

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION CONNECTION This year we—and others—provided grants to members of a partnership that is addressing children’s mental health issues in Collier County. The mission of the collaborative— NAMI, Healthcare Network of SW FL (Formerly Collier Health Services), David Lawrence Center and Florida State University College of Medicine (Immokalee Campus)—is to provide a community mental health continuum which offers prevention, early identification and treatment of children with mental health diagnoses. Read more about the work that one of the partners, David Lawrence Center, and its leadership are doing to provide these services. Before Dr. Maribel Rivera’s arrival, limited mental health services were being provided via telemedicine. Now, with her expertise on-site and mobile support from resources like NAMI’s HUGS mobile, effective care can be provided. We are so pleased to be part of the village that is improving mental health care in Collier County. The following article, authored by Cathy Chestnut, originally appeared in part in è Bella Magazine.

In Southwest Florida, migrant laborers are paid less than $1 for every 32 pounds of tomatoes picked, resulting in high rates of poverty. The families frequently move to follow seasonal crops, separating families for long stretches. If the children go with their parents, they typically fall behind in academics and socialization. Many families face language barriers and the specter of deportation. Enter Dr. Maribel Rivera who arrived in Southwest Florida last year to join the David Lawrence Center as a staff psychiatrist working at the David Lawrence Center’s Children’s Medical Services with clients ranging in age from 3 to early 20s. Rivera sees an average of 300 families between Naples and Immokalee—typical of pediatric and adolescent caseloads nationally, she says. Her clientele here face several challenges—attention-deficit

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF COLLIER COUNTY

hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), mixed with anxieties that come with the layered psychosocial elements felt by the entire migrant family. “Child psychiatry ends up being family psychiatry,” she says. “I really am working with the entire family unit.” Dr. Rivera came to work here through the “Beautiful Minds” Children’s Mental Health Initiative, funded by the Naples Children & Education Foundation to provide integrated healthcare services to underserved children in Collier County. Collaborating with the Healthcare Network of Southwest Florida, Florida State University College of Medicine and the Community Foundation’s grantee, National Alliance on Mental Illness, Dr. Rivera is part of a larger team that is addressing both the children’s mental and physical well-being in an integrated, continuum of care—the first time that kind of program has been offered to the low-income, migrant farming families of Immokalee. Before Rivera’s arrival, limited child psychiatric services were offered to the Immokalee region via telemedicine. Now, it’s a continuum of services, training and constant communication so patients don’t get lost in the system. “We all contribute and learn from each other,” she says. “We get to collaborate, and that doesn’t happen too often in mental health or any other health field. We have shared patients, so we are giving integrated care, and that’s very fulfilling.” Board-certified in adult, child and adolescent psychiatry, Rivera has seven years of research and clinical experience with a specialty in multi-problem cases. Even more crucial, Rivera has a connection and compassion that comes from living on both sides of the fence. “I’ve been on both sides: needing the help, struggling through systems and services to get help for my loved one. I understand how families are hurt and in pain when they tell me they are lost in the system.” Rivera sees special qualities in her patients. “They are very resilient, wonderful, simple people who use limited resources and make the best out of them,” she says. “Particularly in Immokalee, I feel my contribution, as small as it may be, is still huge. There was no one doing this before I was there.”

SCHOLARSHIPS

The scholarship advantage: a note to students. Some people think that scholarships are primarily designed for students who are in need of financial assistance. Not always the case. In fact, winning a scholarship benefits a student for several years after they receive the award. Consider this… ✓ RECOGNITION For some scholarships there are hundreds of applicants. When you are recognized for your accomplishments by receiving a scholarship, it gives you confidence and makes you aware of your potential early in your academic career. ✓ SCHOLARSHIPS PROVIDE VARIED FINANCIAL SUPPORT Even if you are not relying on financial aid, you can still benefit from a scholarship. Some scholarships offer money that can be used to pay for other expenses associated with college, like books and fees. ✓ SCHOLARSHIPS MAKE YOUR RESUME STAND OUT A scholarship can make your resume stand out. Being recognized for your achievements may help get an interview with a future employer…after you graduate from college.

Since 2008, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $1.1 million in scholarships to support students who are seeking a college education.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF COLLIER COUNTY

WHAT A YEAR FOR DREAM MAKING! We were pleased to award 64 scholarships, totaling nearly $533,000, to students enrolled in accredited high school, trade school, community college and university programs for the 2014-2015 academic year. The majority of the scholarships were given to students who currently attend schools in Florida’s Collier and Lee counties. These scholarships were awarded through 22 funds administered by the Community Foundation and established by generous local donors, corporations and organizations allowing students to pursue higher education. Most of these funds focused on student achievements and financial hardship and all expressed a deep belief in the power of education to help young people achieve their dreams. “The talent and potential represented by this past year’s scholarship recipients was impressive,” said Deborah Russell, a member of the Scholarship Grant Committee. “Our choices were never easy! We are thrilled to support these students and grateful to the donors whose contributions make these awards possible every year.” Russell explained that students are extremely grateful for any form of assistance that eases their financial obligations when they pursue higher education. She shared a note from Melissa Farrell, a recipient of an award from the David M. and Judy B. Jones Scholarship Foundation. Since 2009, the Joneses have bestowed the power of education by awarding over $204,000 in scholarships at the Community Foundation. Melissa says: “The David M. and Judy B. Jones Scholarship gives me the opportunity to pursue a degree in my career of choice, nursing. I am the first in my family to attend college. You have eased my financial burden, allowing me to focus more on the most important aspect of school, learning. I hope one day that I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me.”

In 2013-2014, grants awarded by Women’s Initiative Network Endowment Fund benefited: Women’s funds appear in many settings—public charities, private foundations and funds within community foundations like ours. Surveys revealed that funding for women and girls by the broader foundation community has grown at a faster rate than foundation giving on the whole. But as a share of overall foundation giving, funding for women and girls has remained below 7.5 percent for more than 15 years. Our interpretation: funders are aware of the potential for change by investing in women, but awareness that sparks giving must be intensified. The women of the Women’s Initiative Network (WIN) agree that investing in the empowerment of at-risk women and girls is vital. “When you invest in a woman, you invest in a family, in a community and, ultimately in our nation,” says Liz Jessee, a 2013 Woman of Initiative and member of the WIN Steering Committee. Women, children and seniors at risk and in need of immediate financial assistance were a focus of (WIN) grantmaking this year. Grants in the amount of nearly $58,000 from the Network’s Endowment Fund supported organizations that provide assistance to Collier County women in need: basic needs support, caregiver support, legal services, mental health services, programs for building life skills and crisis support for victims of human trafficking. One of these grants was also awarded to the Junior Women of Initiative (JWOI) Mentoring Program, founded in 2005 when Naples residents, Carolyn and Roy Neumann, approached the Community Foundation about funding a mentoring program at the Boys & Girls Club of Collier County. The program inspires and connects 25-30 women mentors—many drawn from WIN—with young women, ages 13-17. These grants were drawn in part from the investment income from the Endowment Fund of the Women’s Initiative Network and from funds raised at the Network’s special events: Power of the Purse, the Women of Initiative Honorees event and unique campaigns like the One in a Million endowment-building. To serve the current and changing needs of women and girls in Collier County through grantmaking—that is the powerful mission of the Women’s Initiative Network.

✓ CARE CLUB OF COLLIER COUNTY Caregiver support for low-income individuals with dementia. ✓ JEWISH FAMILY & COMMUNITY SERVICES OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA (JFCS) Support vulnerable seniors and their caregivers and address senior isolation and loneliness. ✓ LEGAL AID SERVICE OF COLLIER COUNTY Support vulnerable seniors, women heads of households with children, and women and girls with disabilities who require legal assistance. ✓ NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS (NAMI) OF COLLIER COUNTY Support for Latino at-risk teens and their mothers. ✓ BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF COLLIER COUNTY Support the Junior Women’s Initiative Network program and engage mentors to develop leadership skills for at-risk teen girls. ✓ THE WOMEN’S FUND OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA Establish a Southwest Florida Regional Center on Human Trafficking to deliver support from law enforcement and victim-service agencies to women and girls victimized by human trafficking.

The Women’s Initiative Network’s Endowment Fund is a field-of-interest fund at the Community Foundation.

THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIP

WHY PROFESSIONAL ADVISORS CONNECT WITH US Four of our professional partners share their points of view on the role that the Community Foundation has played in helping them help their clients. The Community Foundation works with donors to help them plan ahead and positively impact nonprofit organizations and issues they care about beyond their lifetime. But we could not do this quite as effectively without the partnerships we enjoy with our area’s professional advisors—attorneys, financial planners, wealth mangers—and the volunteers who serve on our Professional Advisors Council.

Kim Ciccarelli Kantor, president, refers to the benefits the Community Foundation provides when planning for charitable funds for the families she serves. Kim values most the Foundation team’s ability and commitment to deliver the high degree of expertise, professionalism and responsiveness that her clients expect. Her familyfocused wealth management firm provides objective investment, tax, estate, and lifestyle planning advice to high net worth individuals and all family members. “In addition to providing a management process for charitable funds, the Community Foundation qualifies and examines charities being considered for gifts. Most advisors do not have the staff, experience or the vehicles to administer charitable funds as the Foundation does,” Kantor explained. “Charitable planning is personal and complex, and clients can best be served with a team effort. Bridging family goals coupled with the secure and comfortable, customized and personalized service our community foundation provides is an excellent choice.”

When help is needed to prepare and administer estate plans, many families and their advisors call on Dennis Brown at Bond, Schoeneck & King for his expertise in estate planning and probate services. Dennis Brown cites a number of reasons for referring individuals to the Community Foundation, including the ability of clients to fulfill their charitable goals by utilizing tax-wise strategies for appreciated property and avoiding filing, legal and accounting fees associated with a private foundation. Additional benefits include facilitating anonymous gifting and transferring funds electronically. In fact, Dennis and his wife established their own donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation of Collier County. “Linda and I created a charitable fund to advance our charitable goals and to make our giving more efficient,” he said. “The Community Foundation has been a wonderful resource for my family and my clients.”

And, as an added benefit for all professional advisors in our community, the Professional Advisors Council hosts engaging lectures and seasoned experts from around the country as part of its mission to educate their colleagues. As a partner with Quarles & Brady, one of the area’s largest full-service law firms, Kimberly Leach Johnson appreciates the value and ease that the Community Foundation offers her clients. Many of those whom she counsels have an interest in charitable giving and the means to create a private foundation. However, Johnson urges them to consider establishing donoradvised funds at the Community Foundation. “The benefit of donor-advised funds is that clients don’t have to maintain a separate foundation with annual reporting requirements. You can start with smaller contributions to try it out and then increase those amounts in the future,” Johnson explained. Others offer donor-advised funds, but Kim is comfortable referring clients to the Community Foundation. “You don’t have to deal with a huge bureaucracy. It’s as easy as picking up the phone,” Johnson said. “Working with a donor-advised fund at the Foundation makes charitable giving effortless.”

Ed Wollman, partner at Wollman, Gehrke & Solomon explains his reasons for referring his clients to the Community Foundation. “The Community Foundation has been a wonderful planning partner for me and an exceptional charitable outlet for clients of mine who have charitable interests. The Community Foundation staff is both professionally knowledgeable and user friendly. They have assisted me in implementing tax advantageous structures and, at the same time, helped my client—families that are working to refine and define their philanthropic goals, with a particular eye toward local charitable organizations which need financial support. One particular strength of the Community Foundation is their patient encouragement of involvement by second and third generation family members in family philanthropic structures established by prior generations. Thank you Community Foundation for being a great partner in the philanthropy of my clients.”

“By being active in numerous organizations that have a tremendous impact in the community, we have earned a good reputation for being involved contributors.”

– Amy Hale, Director, Wealth Advisor

– Dennis Brown, Managing Member

BMO Private Bank’s commitment to the communities it serves extends far beyond serving its clients’ financial needs. Specifically, BMO has been a pioneer in recognizing the contributions that women make to building strong businesses—BMO boasts the first female bank officer in the state of Wisconsin— and the role that women play in building better communities. BMO is also dedicated to making a difference in the lives of women. BMO has created a specialized banking division to serve women customers who manage their own money and a task force to help eliminate barriers in the workplace for women. The organization has also conducted research and developed programs to educate women on relevant issues. Last year’s topic: Women & Philanthropy: Creating a Legacy. Established in 1817 as Bank of Montreal, BMO Financial Group is a highly diversified financial services organization based in North America. “Our family, our company and those we serve understand that to live in a community, one must believe in the community. Our personal and business legacies become centered here, whether a seasonal or full-time resident. It is a perfect fit for the work we do.” – Kim Ciccarelli Kantor, Partner

– Brad Havemeier, President and Partner Thirty-five years ago, the dream of this town we call home, Naples, became reality to our family. We have watched the community develop and grow, not only in population, but in its sensitivity for the future of the place we call home. The Community Foundation of Collier County, since 1985, has encouraged us to better bridge the relationship of family, community and philanthropy. As we assist in designing a legacy plan, the Community Foundation ensures it is carried out; enabling donors and professionals to set a philanthropic vision in motion with the tools, knowledge and resources to match those that need and desire them. Many charitable endeavors exist here, most with a focused audience, mission and purpose. The reality is that giving spans over many multi-generational family members and multiple charitable organizations. With change and growth a constant of our community, a strong and balanced foundation is necessary. The Community Foundation dynamically serves this role and we are proud to be affiliated with them. Ciccarelli Advisory Services, Inc. is a comprehensive family wealth management firm that provides lifelong financial services to successful families. We work to create financial stability and independence to help our clients feel more comfortable that they are knowledgeable and in caring hands. It is our advocacy for the family and each of its individuals that defines us.

The Humanitarian Foundation places emphasis on programs that serve the needs of the local southwest Florida communities; that are not-for-profit and provide services and support to area residents. At the beginning of each year, employees vote for their preferred organizations to receive both monetary and volunteer support annually. As a community-based agency, we are committed to creating meaningful change in Collier County through community leadership, employee volunteerism, and fundraising support. In 2011, Gulfshore earned the Corporate Philanthropy Award from the Community Foundation of Collier County. We recognize that healthy, thriving communities depend on involved citizens, organizations, and corporate partners for momentum. Every community has its own challenges, and we strive to always be part of the solution! Gulfshore Insurance has been building relationships and trust in Southwest Florida for over 44 years. Today we have over 100 professionals working to assist our clients manage their business and personal risk. Through our relationships with many of the most admired insurers in the country, we help protect our clients from the unexpected.
