COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF COLLIER COUNTY Strengthening Our Community Forever
ABOUT COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONS WHAT IS A COMMUNITY FOUNDATION? A community foundation is a collection of charitable funds established by individuals, families, businesses and organizations to help meet local challenges and improve the quality of life in their region. It is tax-exempt public charity. Community foundations are a growing global phenomenon with more than 1,500 funds around the world. The first community foundation was founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1914. Today, there are more than 740 community foundations in the United States, managing more than $58 billion in assets. In 2012, gifts totaled nearly $4.5 billion. Community foundations are overseen by volunteer boards of citizens and work with families, individuals, attorneys and estate and financial planners to devise gift plans that fit every economic situation, ensuring that donors’ charitable contributions are used to the fullest extent and for maximum benefit. In addition to making grants to agencies and activities in their areas, community foundations also identify needs, stimulate resources to address those needs and help their communities prepare for the future. They are conveners, collaborators and connectors.
WHAT DOES A COMMUNITY FOUNDATION DO? A community foundation receives charitable gifts, places that gift into a fund or funds, manages the assets of that fund for growth and makes grants from the fund. Community foundations offer several types of funds to help donors achieve their charitable goals while also meeting community needs. Visit our website at www.cfcollier.org for a description of these types of funds.
WHAT THE COMMUNITY OF FOUNDATION OF COLLIER COUNTY DOES Since 1985, the Community Foundation of Collier County (CFCC) has grown to become one of Florida’s largest community foundations. CFCC’s volunteer board of trustees and nine-person staff are committed to understanding donor needs, representing their charitable interests, expertly handling complex gifts, wisely managing charitable funds and leveraging a wealth of community knowledge to increase charitable impact. We serve as a hub for collaboration between philanthropists, nonprofits and other funding organizations across the community.
GIVE ME AN EXAMPLE After a devastating 2013 Labor Day fire, the Greater Naples YMCA recognized a unique opportunity to rebuild the “Y” to meet the modern needs of Collier County families. The outpouring of support from the community gave the YMCA’s leadership the confidence to embark on a $4 million fundraising campaign. In response, the Community Foundation of Collier County immediately awarded the YMCA a grant of $25,000 to create support for the staff in its fundraising activities. The Community Foundation also helped raise close to $100,000 from individual and fund-holder donations. And, in a true spirit of collaboration, the Community Foundation brokered a $1.5 million challenge grant with the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation to spark further giving from the community. In less than seven weeks, the challenge was met through a variety of donations, ranging from $50 to $50,000. The “Y” now offers child care and services from pre-school through high school. The new addition will allow those programs to be housed under one roof. The two-story, 50,000-square-foot center, slated for completion by the end of 2014, will also include a basketball court, spaces for spinning and yoga, and classroom space for learning about preparing nutritious meals and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The L-shaped complex will feature energy-efficient and recycled materials and systems, plus a new stucco façade.
