Welcome From Our President Dear Friends, Welcome to Naples Ballet’s season-ending performance of Coppelia. We are completing our seventh year of existence in Naples, and this is the second time we have performed Coppelia at the Sugden Community Theatre. Coppelia, a comic ballet originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Leon to the music of Leo Delibes, was originally performed in Paris in 1870. Modern productions were derived from the choreography of Marius Petipa for the Imperial Ballet of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Our production is based on Georges Balanchine’s production first performed in 1974. Coppelia concerns an inventor, Dr. Coppelius, who has made a life-size dancing doll. It is so lifelike that Franz, a village youth, becomes infatuated with it and sets aside his true heart’s desire, Swanilda. She shows him his folly by dressing as the doll, and pretending to come to life while ultimately saving him from the hands of the inventor. It is our philosophy that our students learn not only from their lessons but also from performing onstage. Each year we produce two full-length productions: The Nutcracker ballet performed in December and another classical ballet at the end of the school year. We have students who are as young as four and in their first year of dance training to adult students who have been dancing for many years, as well as parents of some of our dancers. Performing in Coppelia are three dancers who are in their last performance for Naples Ballet because they are graduating from high school and going to college. Francesca Petraglia has been a student at Naples Ballet since 2010 and will be a dance major at the University of Central Florida starting in August. Sarah Renfroe also joined us in 2010 and will be attending Savannah College of Art and Design majoring in conceptual art. Eleonora Zirilli joined us in 2011 and will be attending the University of Tampa majoring in business. We will miss all three of them dearly, and we wish them well. Special thanks should be given to our teachers and staff who have been preparing for this production for over three months. Christophe Maraval, our talented Artistic Director, choreographed this production with the assistance of Liliam Gomez, our Senior Instructor. Our administrative team of Deirdre Butler-Derby and Rachel Hamilton have assisted with many of the other aspects of our production, as have numerous parents and friends. I also want to thank the 54 students who are dancing in this production and their parents who have dedicated so much time to prepare for Coppelia. I would like to thank our contributors for their generous support which not only helps with the cost of this production, but also allows some of our students to participate, who could not otherwise afford the tuition. We sincerely hope you enjoy our production.

With Warm Regards,

Toshiko Tompkins President/Director

Who We Are Naples Ballet, Inc. is a non-profit ballet company administered by a volunteer Board of Trustees dedicated to setting new standards for artistic excellence. We provide the art of ballet as a component of education and promote cultural enrichment by creating awareness of the art of dance within the Naples community. Our vision is one of preserving the art of classical ballet and providing opportunities in several areas of community outreach. We mentor our local children in dance education and host special programs such as afterschool ballet classes at the Boys and Girls Club of Collier County. Our collective goal is to deliver an artistic and cultural experience that inspires dancers and audiences alike. The mission of Naples Ballet, Inc., is to provide dancers of all ages with performance opportunities that meet the highest standards of artistic development, instill professional values and qualities through art education and to offer complimentary professional dance instruction through scholarship funding. Our need-based scholarships for ballet training are awarded to dancers through open auditions, and we currently have ten scholarship students, nine of whom you’ll see onstage today. We serve as a training ground for recreational dancers, as well as those who are seeking professional careers in dance or related fields, and daily training is essential for our students to be technically prepared. Additionally, weekly rehearsals are necessary to prepare for productions, and dancers dedicate an average of 13 hours per week to their dance studies while maintaining their educational responsibilities. Our dancers are an extraordinary group of young people who have been accepted into prestigious summer programs offered by the American Ballet Theatre, Bolshoi Ballet, Boston Ballet, The HARID Conservatory, Houston Ballet, Joffrey Ballet, Kirov Academy of Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Orlando Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Patel Conservatory, San Francisco Ballet, Sarasota Ballet and The School of American Ballet. We are very proud of each of them. Funding for Naples Ballet, Inc. is earned through ticket sales, fundraising and charitable contributions. Donations help to fund our endeavors and allow us to connect with other art groups in the community for the purpose of promoting the art of dance in an educational and creative environment.

The Story of Coppelia Act I The curtain rises on the square of a small European town, several hundred years ago. A lovely young girl, Coppelia is seen sitting by a window, reading a book as Swanilda enters. Swanilda looks up at the girl and attempts to attract her attention, but receives no reply. Swanilda’s fiancé, Franz, comes with flowers. Unable to find her, he’s about to leave until he is surprised by Coppelia who stands up and blows him kisses. When Swanilda sees Franz blowing a kiss back to Coppelia she becomes angry since he’s flirting with another girl, especially the day before they are to be married. Villagers arrive to begin wedding preparations, interrupting the argument. The Mayor explains the wedding details, but is concerned to see that Swanilda and Franz are at odds. The Mayor suggests that Swanilda “listen to the wheat,” and if she hears anything when she shakes it, then Franz is her true love. After hearing from the wheat, she joins her friends to dance. The town square is empty. Dr. Coppelius leaves his house and his beloved Coppelia, but he’s surprised by Swanilda and her friends. He irritably leaves while pushing her aside. Swanilda notices that Coppelius has dropped his key to his front door. She gathers her friends, and enters the mysterious house to find out what goes really goes on inside and to speak to Coppelia. Dr. Coppelius returns, while searching for his key he notices that his door is open. He enters his house to investigate. Franz gets a ladder and climbs to the balcony intending to meet Coppelia. Inside Dr. Coppelius’ dark, spooky house, the girls search for Coppelia. They find her behind a curtain—and discover that she’s a mechanical doll. They laugh when they think that Franz should have fallen for a mannequin. They soon discover other dolls as they start to play with them. Dr. Coppelius chases the girls from the house, except Swanilda who’s behind the curtain that also hides Coppelia. Franz arrives and is confronted by the Doctor. As Franz explains that he wants to meet the attractive girl, Dr. Coppelius has an idea. He offers Franz a drink that he’s spiked with sleeping powder. Franz falls asleep, and Dr. Coppelius plans to instill Franz’s life force in Coppelia. He’s thrilled when Coppelia comes to life. Finally, he will have someone to share his lonely life with. The fact of the matter is that Swanilda was pretending to be Coppelia in order to rescue Franz. Sounds of activity outside announce that morning is here. As Swanilda rouses the drowsy Franz, she reveals to Coppelius that she’s not the doll and escapes from the house with Franz. Act II The curtain rises on the final act, set in the village square. Franz and Swanilda are now reconciled. As they approach the Mayor to receive their dowries and get married. Dr. Coppelius storms in and accuses the lovers of destroying his life’s work. Swanilda, realizing the justness of his claim, offers him her dowry. But the mayor gives Dr. Coppelius a bag of gold and sends him off. The townspeople then participate in the fête, which unites Swanilda and Franz in a happy marriage.

We are so proud of you Elizabeth Parker! Love, Mom & Dad, Reid & Will

After 5 years of dancing at Naples Academy of Ballet, I honestly don’t know how I will fare moving somewhere else, but I know that I will be carrying with me all of the wonderful and valuable lessons I’ve learned here. As I part ways with my second family, I know it will not be a “goodbye,” but rather a “see you later.” So much of what has been good in my life has stemmed from being here at NAB and dancing with so many people I’ve grown to love and cherish. I just want to thank Mr. and Mrs. Tompkins for all of the opportunities they have offered me as well as Mr. Christophe and Mrs. Liliam for installing in me the spirit and joy of true dance. I will miss everyone so dearly and reminisce all of the incredible memories I’ve made during my, what has seemed to be, too short of a time here. — Francesca Petraglia I was born in Rome, Italy and was not able to start dance until the age of 11. When I started, I struggled because I had severe scoliosis, so the teacher wouldn’t allow me to dance. I moved to the U.S. my 8th grade year and started dancing not long after. Joining Naples Academy of Ballet was the best decision I could ever make. The teachers care and really concentrate on improving your dance ability. In my times of stress and low self-confidence, they always found a way to make me feel better and encourage me to work harder. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to spend 5 years of my life at the Naples Academy of Ballet, and I would like to thank everyone that supported me in this journey. — Eleonora Zirilli Naples Academy of Ballet has been such an integral part of my high school experience, and ballet itself has truly helped make me who I am today. One thing I would especially like to thank the studio for is growing my self confidence. It’s a humbling experience starting ballet when you’re a nearly 6-foot tall, 14 year old, and you start classes with girls who are half your height and nearly half your age. But having to work so hard to get to where I am today has really taught me so much, and I would never give that up. I have made some of my best friends at this studio—ones that will last long past ballet. The opportunities and doors that Naples Academy of Ballet have opened for me are endless, and I cannot thank the studio enough for the incredible experiences I have been able to be a part of. — Sarah Renfroe
