On The Boulevard

APRIL 2024

Hello Marbella!

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times—a tale of two towers. With that, I’m trying to keep it light. Many happenings are going on around us. We have had several losses since the last newsletter but also gained new residents, friends, and employees.

There are ongoing renovations and several projects in the works. People are moving in, and outside vendors are doing work. We, as staff, are trying our best to make these activities as smooth a process as possible for all. Living and working in a vertical community can be challenging at times. The Pelican Bay sidewalk project in front of The Marbella should end in the next few weeks.

We welcome new Committee and Board Members as we embark on the future successes of The Marbella and the lives we touch.

MANAGER’S MESSAGE

A Few Reminders

Season is almost over and summer is just around the corner. It has been busy with 165 residents at The Marbella, and if you find yourself leaving us for a while, please remember to fill out the Resident Absentee form before your departure. The info you list is the only way we will know where to reach you in case of an emergency in your unit.

As you prepare to leave, here is a quick recap of some items that are often overlooked:

• Remove all dry goods, especially open dry cereal, flour, sugar, etc., from cabinets; remember to turn off the icemaker and empty the ice bin.

• Deep cleaning of your home is available while you are away. Please call and schedule before you leave us: cleaning baseboards, blinds, ceiling fans, lanais, screens, windows, and organizing drawers.

• Coordinate with the front desk any carpet cleaning or other type of vendor work in your home in your absence. It’s an excellent time to consider a walk-in shower or new flooring.

Winemaker’s Dinner

Thursday, April 4

6:00 PM

Napoli Room

Enjoy an evening of delicious menu pairings with Gregory James Wines. RSVP in the dining room; space is limited. Dress to impress.

• The resident garden is located outside on the southwest side of the building. You may place your plants there while you are gone for the summer. Our landscape team will treat them as needed for insects, and the housekeepers will water them. Though we cannot control typical outside elements, nor can we assure you that your plants will flourish in your absence, we'll do our best to care for them while you're away.

• All east shutters will be closed this summer upon your departure; this can help reduce the heat load on your air-conditioning system and prevent fading to your carpet, drapes, and furniture. Closing the shutters also helps to secure your home should there be a storm. A flat $25 fee will be charged for the process.

• We are unsure how many residents are going north this year. All activities and services will continue for those who stay with us year-round. For those going north for the summer, your home will be ready for you should you take a summer vacation back to The Marbella.

Have a Wonderful Summer! 239.593.2311

THE MORE YOU KNOW

The Cove

The Cove at The Marbella is fortunate to have two licenses. The first is the standard license, which allows the more independent residents to live at The Cove. The independent resident will still receive assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, transferring, and medications. I know that some independent residents may want to be in The Cove for security, which is also an option. Stay in your apartment all day and only sleep at The Cove to feel secure and safe.

The Cove's specialty license is the Extended Congregate Care (ECC) license. This license was designed for assisted living facilities to allow their residents to age in place. The ECC license is the highest level of licensing that a facility can be given. It allows the nursing staff more flexibility to perform nursing duties. The ECC enables the facility to keep residents who would not qualify under the standard license.

Through the Extended Congregate Care license, the healthcare staff of the assisted living facility can provide total assistance. Total assistance includes bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, nursing assessments more frequently, measuring and recording vital signs and weights, recording input/ output, administering medications, make arrangements for rehabilitative services (PT, OT, ST) and transportation services.

Under the Extended Congregate Care license, the nursing staff may provide any nursing service permitted within the scope of their license that is consistent with the facility's policies. The Cove can provide residents with long-term care, overnight care (for those residents who do not want to stay in their apartments alone at night), and Respite care (for caregivers who need a break).

As you can probably tell, I love talking about The Cove and teaching residents about the assisted living facility. The Cove staff comprises some of the most remarkable professionals I have had the pleasure of managing. They all go above and beyond their duties. Visit bit.ly/marbellacove to learn more about The Cove.

Book Club

On Friday, May 17, The Marbella Book Club will meet at noon in the Dining Room (Capri) for lunch and a conversation about Happy-Go-Lucky by David Sedaris. Our meetings are open to everyone, even if you haven’t read the book. Reservations are required; RSVP in the mail room.
