Can Alcohol Help Your Health?
While moderate alcohol intake can be beneficial to your health, excess ingestion of it can be dangerous. Moderate alcohol consumption has been associated with decreased mortality and may have cardiovascular benefits.
Excessive alcohol intake is associated with higher chances of dying from many causes. Too much alcohol intake is responsible for falls, head injury, and intracranial bleeding, liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, osteoporosis, cancer of the esophagus, head, and neck. Even a moderate amount of drinking by women can cause increased chances of having breast cancer. Excess alcohol is known for increased

risk of accidents, trauma, violence, and suicide. Alcohol can cause shrinkage of the brain, which is responsible for memory loss. Alcohol can cause heart failure and neuropathy.
The question is how much is too much. In the medical community, moderate alcohol consumption means 14 to 15 grams of alcohol per day, equivalent to 5 ounces (about 147.87 mL) of wine, 12 ounces (about 354.88 mL) of beer, and 1.5 ounces (about 44.36 mL) of 80 proof liquor. Heavy drinking for women is more than seven drinks per week or three drinks per occasion, and for men, more than 14 drinks per week or four drinks per occasion. Please be cautious while you enjoy your drink!

Stay Indoors During Mid-Day Hours: During periods of extreme heat, reserve running errands and outdoor activities before 10:00 AM or after 6:00 PM. A good book or game of cards might be a better activity during the hottest part of the day.
Take it Easy: Avoid outside exercise and strenuous activity when it’s very hot. Utilize the fitness center or take a walk in the common areas. Some groups meet to walk around the indoor malls for summer exercise. Can’t find one? Maybe you can start your own.
Watch the Heat Index: When the humidity is high, the body’s ability to cool itself by sweating is reduced. The heat index factors in humidity and temperature and provides a feeling like temperature. The current heat index can be found on your favorite weather website and is usually announced on local TV and radio weather reports during periods of warm weather.
Know the Warning Signs of Heat Exhaustion: Dizziness, nausea, headache, rapid heartbeat, profuse sweating, chest pain, fainting, breathing problems, and even a sense that it is suddenly cooler are all warning signs that it’s time to COOL IT!
A Few Ways to Deal with Suspected Heat Exhaustion When Outside: Find a place to rest in the shade. Sip on some cool, not cold, water. Place cool cloths on the inside of your wrists, neck, and head, and as soon as you feel able, get inside and rest.
Wear Sunglasses: When outside, it is important to protect your eyes from the sun’s intense UV rays, which is beneficial for your vision.
Sunburns: Wear sunscreen to protect yourself from sunburn. The higher the number, the better. Should you get a sunburn, there are numerous lotions containing aloe vera for relief.
Use Caution When it’s Raining: Plan for slippery roads and walkways. Consider wearing rubber-soled shoes when it’s wet out.
Have a safe and healthy summer! At your service,
– Michelle Woodman
Be Prepared
Hurricane Ian had sustained winds of 160 mph as it moved toward the west coast of Florida and made landfall just below peak intensity in Southwest Florida in late September 2022.
Staying put is not an option during a mandatory hurricane evacuation order. It's vital to prepare a detailed plan. Begin by identifying and arranging accessible transportation through family, friends, or local services. Pack a go-bag with essentials, including medications, medical documents, personal identification, and necessities like water, non-perishable food, and clothing. Ensure you have a reliable communication plan with loved ones and caregivers, keeping a list of essential contacts readily available. Familiarize yourself with the locations of nearby shelters that cater to medical needs and have backup power. Planning now can significantly reduce stress and ensure your safety during a hurricane.
