October 2024: On The Boulevard

On The Boulevard

OCTOBER 2024

The Marbella common area renovation is just beginning, and we’re interviewing potential designers. The project is moving forward as funds are already set aside in the reserves. Robert Dieckmann will be the project manager; with his experience and objective disposition, he will do an excellent job.

We’re pleased with the level of community member participation in fitness activities. Darci is rolling out an additional circuit class next month in The Cove’s physical therapy room, and Julio already has physical therapy services in the PT room.

The elevator project date is anticipated in mid-October, and the much-needed fire alarm replacement has begun.

We’re still in hurricane season. Be sure you have a plan and your supplies on hand. Please have your exit strategy to quickly leave if there is a mandatory evacuation at the first indication of an approaching storm’s threat to the area.

The team has been working to get The Marbella in tip top shape for the upcoming season. Additionally, you’ll see new tablecloths,

monthly dinner buffets, and boxed lunches available for you to take to the beach. We’ll host new entertainment and more functions outdoors. The Welcome Back Party will be a Roaring Twenties theme on October 17th, weather permitting, on the West Deck with a dance floor. Dress to impress!

What’s not to love in the winter months in Naples? Celebrate every day with your friends at The Marbella!

At your service!

Fellowship with Father Joe

For a bright spot in your day, spend an hour with a delightful person, Father Joe from St. John’s Episcopal Church. He is a fabulous listener, and we chat. Then he does a short service and joins us for lunch. When we say he is joyful, we mean it. We are truly grateful to our dear friend and The Marbella resident Marilyn Hibbert for introducing Father Joe to us eight years ago.

Art After Hours

Artis—Naples invites the community to enjoy Art After Hours at The Baker Museum on the last Wednesday of each month from 6:00 to 9:00 PM; the next event is October 30. With live music performed by local musicians, food and beverages, and free admission to all museum exhibitions, Art After Hours is a fun evening of art and entertainment for audiences of all ages.

My First Day in the USA

All musicians have a menu of stage stories that capture moments when something goes wrong in front of the audience. This one tops the charts of public embarrassment and is inseparable from my journey toward my American Dream.

In 1997, I was among an international group of young pianists at the World Piano Competition in Cincinnati. Having dreamed of coming to America since my early teens, this was a larger-than-life event. Local families hosted all contestants, and mine, all native Ohioans, went out of their way to make my first American day unforgettable. They booked a VIP booth for the Cincinnati Reds game! The truth is that I didn’t know who the Cincinnati Reds were or what the game was. I cheerfully agreed and, holding my breath partook in the merriment of the spectator sport.

My host family was so excited to give me the ultimate experience that they got me to do a guest announcement! So, up to the radio booth, I went, somewhat excited and nervous by the prospect of speaking to the crowd of tens of thousands at the game, which I, at that point, couldn’t remember the name of. After reading the score, I was told to wish the team good luck. The surprise of having to improv caught me off guard, and in the heat of the moment, having completely forgotten what it was they were playing, I blurted out: “I wish you to win the basketball Olympics.” The stadium went silent, and as I listened to a cacophony of gasps and giggles, I realized I said something entirely wrong. My face and name were on all the screens around the arena, zooming closer in. I looked bewildered and flushed and realized that I may have insulted 40,000+ Ohioans. My future American life flashed before me, and I thought my career was over before it began.

How could I possibly win anything after such a public fiasco? Luckily, my 16-year-old self was a dramatic overthinker. As I was meeting people over the next two weeks of the competition, they would jokingly call me the Basketball Olympics guy. It didn’t prevent me from winning the grand prize, but it sure made my first day in the USA unforgettable.

Join me on October 24 at 5:30 PM for a presentation of great music and more fun stories that never make it to the playbill’s program notes. Grand Piano Series has just announced our new season at our new venue, Artis—Naples. We are thrilled to bring the highest caliber music to our area’s premier performing arts center. • Do you experience any degree of hearing loss?

• Do you rely on a family member or friend to help with your phone calls?

• Do you need help understanding phone messages?

• Do you find yourself asking people to speak louder or repeat themselves?

• Do you watch movies or television with captions on?

Many people have trouble hearing on the phone, even with hearing aids.

A CapTel Captioned Telephone works like any other phone, except you see captions of everything the caller says; it is like captioning on your TV. These phones are free for those who have difficulty hearing or understanding. CapTel service is part of a federally funded program regulated by the FCC and is exclusively designed for individuals with hearing loss under provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act. There is no cost to use the captioning service, but requires internet. Free installation and training are provided.

How do you get one? Don't hesitate to contact your local CapTel Outreach Educator, Mickie Oliva, at 954.415.9469 (call/text) or email mickie.oliva@oeius.org
