Rendering of the Julianna Park renovation.
Julianna Park Renovation Julianna Park has undergone a complete park renovation and will be open to the public soon. New amenities will include: a multi-use turf area, fitness equipment, half court basketball, gazebo, and shaded picnic area with BBQs. These improvements complement the recent installation of a brand new, volunteer-built play area which was completed in September 2019. Construction is anticipated to be completed in late Fall 2020.
Construction in progress at Julianna Park
New Park Under Construction in the Platinum Triangle Aloe Greens is a brand new, 1.2 acre park located in the new home community of A-town in the Platinum Triangle area. This developer-built park features an elevated Main Plaza with a large, colorful water feature surrounded by unique shade structures and seating areas. A large turf area can be viewed from the plaza, with ample space for picnic and play. The site also includes two vibrant play areas, lounge chairs, game tables, benches, shade and landscaping. Construction is anticipated to be completed in Fall 2020.
Spotlight on Mario V. Mario is a student at Anaheim High School. As a Project S.A.Y. (Support Anaheim’s Youth) student, Mario has volunteered at various community events over the past two years. This summer, he supported the CampVenture Downtown Day Camp and was committed to helping staff prepare at 6:30 AM! Mario’s favorite thing about volunteering is meeting new people and helping his community - especially kids and people in need.

PANTRY BAGS Each week, Community Services staff prepare 300 shelf stable and 300 fresh produce pantry bags to be distributed at our Family Resource Centers to families in need. To date, staff has prepared over 7,200 of these bags.
OAK CANYON NATURE CENTER This summer Oak Canyon Nature Center hosted 220 campers who participated in a modified version of O.A.K.S. and Wilderness Survival day camp. For six weeks campers enjoyed the sunshine, sang camp songs, hiked trails, and learned about the local ecosystem. In addition to increased cleaning and sanitation, staff facilitated a valet-style dropoff and pick-up, complete with wellness checks and no-contact temperature checks. Campers were required to wear masks and socially distance, but we still had a great summer!
MEET KEVIN SOMES
Oak Canyon Nature Center
Kevin Somes has served the City of Anaheim for the past 25 years in various capacities at the Oak Canyon Nature Center. At Oak Canyon Kevin assists with organizing and planning programs, leading hikes, and supervising the feeding and medical care of the center’s live animal collection. While hiking Kevin states,“It's a nice break from my business endeavors. This was actually my first job while in high school and I enjoy Oak Canyon so much that I still work there, albeit not nearly as much as in the past.” Kevin also oversees Nature Nights, where the community gets the chance to meet experts from a variety of natural fields. In his free time Kevin is an avid skier, volunteers for community causes and an aspiring standup comedian. Additionally, as an English major Kevin has a deep appreciation for Shakespearian theatre, having seen over 100 plays.
YOUTH PROGRAMS CampVenture hosted almost 100 kids over 6 weeks this summer. CampVenture held a modified day camp program with safety measures like wearing masks, regularly scheduled hand washing, deep cleaning throughout the day, and smaller group sizes. Campers enjoyed organized games, sports, crafts, and a variety of activities provided by friendly CampVenture staff. Special guests, like the Mad Scientist, Kreepy Kreatures Animal Show, and the Arty Loon Magic Show, visited to entertain campers. It was a fun-filled summer and youth programs staff look forward to the camps in the fall!
