PROJECT S.A.Y.
FACE PAINTING FUNDRAISER
During October and November, Brookhurst Project S.A.Y. Teen Center participants played a key role in the success of Project S.A.Y.’s face-painting fundraiser. These teens demonstrated their dedication and great leadership skills in both the planning and execution of this event. Thanks to teens Leilani Pacheco (8th grade), Yaniz Valle-Salazar (8th grade), Michael Orozco (9th grade), Mia Orozco (8th grade), and Alyson Holley (11th grade) from our Brookhurst Project S.A.Y. Teen Center for their contributions and hard work. These students and a few others attended four workshops and learned different face painting and stencil art methods.
In October, the students practiced their artistic skills with their peers in the Teen Room. Face painting and stencil art were also incorporated into the Big Buddy and Little Buddy Programs that occur in collaboration with the S.T.A.R.S. participants.
This fun opportunity allowed them to step into leadership roles and take ownership of their newly found skills. Leilani, Yaniz, Mia, Michael, and Alyson volunteered at several different events promoting Hispanic heritage and were essential to the overall success of the fundraiser.
The Anaheim community is fortunate to have such a talented group of young people who can work hard and play hard while giving back to their community. We hope to continue providing students from Project S.A.Y. more opportunities to develop leadership skills and community involvement.
The Brookhurst Project S.A.Y. Teen Center also participated in the following events:
• Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at the Anaheim Public Library
• City of Anaheim’s Dia de Los Muertos Celebration
• Dia de Los Muertos Celebration at Gaur Elementary

Participants will be encouraged to actively engage in meaningful dialogue and participate in activities that can help shape Anaheim’s future. The program’s goal is simply to develop an awareness in youth about how their city functions and assists its citizens in the community. This year’s Youth in Government Day event will include a breakfast, working lunch, a discussion of important community topics and participation in a mock youth city council meeting.
PARKS PROJECTS & IMPROVEMENTS
Center Greens Improvements
In Winter/Spring 2023, the construction of park-wide improvements at Center Greens will begin! The entire park will more than likely be closed to the public, with the exception of the newly constructed playground, which will remain open as much as possible. The Youth and Community Center will also remain open and accessible.
Boysen Park Refresh
In October and November 2022, the City’s Community Services Department held community meetings to get input from the community about how to invest $15 million in state funding at the iconic Boysen Park. The funding will allow us to refresh the park and expand it by roughly 2.5 acres. We are still in the planning stages and welcome additional community input about what a park refresh would look like for neighborhood residents. Residents can check the project website for updates and future community meeting announcements. Visit Anaheim.net/Boysen or scan here >>
OC River Walk Project
This project aims to transform the Santa Ana River into an iconic regional destination for recreation and entertainment. The City recently received a $5 million grant from the State Coastal Conservancy to do community outreach and to plan and design:
A trail connection from Katella to Anaheim Coves
A pedestrian bridge across the river north of Katella
Two inflatable dams Riverbank modifications
Join us in providing input on these 4 design components so we can make the river a place to connect, recreate, and gather with our community!
