Que el golf es un recurso turístico de primer orden nadie lo discute, bueno, casi nadie, porque todavía hay quien piensa que los campos de golf son espacios naturales no sostenibles destinados solo al ocio y disfrute de seres privilegiados e insensibles con su entorno. El problema, y el debate sobre este recurso turístico esencial en algunas zonas de nuestro país, surge cuando, como ahora, la sequía hace estragos en lugares como Andalucía, Cataluña o el Levante español. ¿Es legítimo destinar tanta agua, cuando tanto escasea, al riego de estos espacios verdes? ¿Y por qué no? ¿Acaso otros segmentos turísticos u otros sectores tienen más derechos? Un campo de golf, con una media de 40 hectáreas, apenas la mitad de ellas regables, da trabajo directo al menos a treinta personas de media, y a muchísimas más de forma indirecta. Además genera otras sinergias económicas que sin duda benefician a todo el entorno. No se trata de comparar, pero ¿cuántas familias pueden vivir dignamente de un espacio agrícola similar y que utilice más o menos los mismos recursos? Por supuesto que hay que corregir excesos y tener mucho cuidado con un recurso tan escaso como el agua, utilizarla regenerada siempre que sea posible, modernizar los sistemas de riego, reducir los espacios regables, etc., pero de eso a considerar que los campos de golf son algo prescindible y que no tienen el mismo derecho, al menos, que otros sectores al uso del agua hay un abismo.

Letter from the Publisher Water… A Capital Resource No one disputes that golf is a first-rate tourism resource. Well, almost no one, because there are still those who think that golf courses are unsustainable natural spaces destined only for the leisure and enjoyment of privileged people who are insensitive to their environment. The problem, and debate, in relation to this essential tourism resource in some areas of Spain arises when – as is the case now – drought ravages regions such as Andalucía, Cataluña and the Spanish Levante. Is it legitimate to allocate so much water, when it is so scarce, to irrigate these green spaces? But the question should be: why not? Do other tourist segments or other sectors have more rights? A golf course, which extends over an average of 40 hectares (barely half of them irrigable), provides direct employment for at least 30 people in general, and many more indirectly. It also generates other economic synergies that unquestionably benefit the whole surrounding environment. It is not a matter of comparisons, but more about how many families can make a proper and dignified living from a similar agricultural area using more or less the same resources. Of course, excesses must be rectified and great care must be taken with such a scarce resource as water, using regenerated water whenever possible, modernising irrigation systems, reducing irrigable areas, etc. However, there is an abyss separating that valid point from one that considers golf courses to be dispensable and to not have the same right, at least, as other sectors to use water.

Aunque no se ha hecho oficial el importe, el contrato de Rahm podría alcanzar los 550 millones de dólares, lo que le convertiría en uno de los deportistas mejor pagados del mundo. El vigente campeón del Masters de Augusta y ganador del US Open en 2021 ha unido su destino deportivo durante cinco años al circuito financiado por el PIF de Arabia Saudí. EN LA INTIMIDAD Rahm nació y creció en la localidad vizcaína costera de Barrika y es un fiel seguidor del Athletic de Bilbao. Participó en deportes y actividades como fútbol, piragüismo, pelota vasca y kung fu cuando era niño antes de centrarse en el golf. Conoció a su esposa, Kelley, cuando los dos eran estudiantes en la Universidad Estatal de Arizona. Kelley era lanzadora de jabalina para el equipo de atletismo. Rahm le propuso matrimonio durante un paseo en Torrey Pines en 2018. Era un sitio muy especial para Rahm: obtuvo allí su primer título del PGA TOUR (Farmers Insurance Open 2017) y su primer grande (US Open 2021). Tienen dos hijos, ambos con nombres vascos: Kepa y Eneko. Su jugador favorito es Seve.

IN PRIVATE Rahm was born and raised in the coastal Biscayan town of Barrika and is a loyal supporter of Athletic Club Bilbao. He participated in various sports and activities including football, canoeing, Basque pelota and kung fu as a child before focusing on golf. He met his wife, Kelley, when they were both students at Arizona State University, where Kelley was a javelin thrower for the track and field team. He proposed to Kelley during a walk at Torrey Pines in 2018. It has become a particularly special place for Rahm: he won his first PGA Tour title there (2017 Farmers Insurance Open) and his first major (2021 U.S. Open 2021). They have two sons, both with Basque names: Kepa and Eneko. His favourite player is Seve.

LLUVIA DE MILLONES El LIV Golf 2024 comienza en febrero en Mayakoba (México) y cuenta con un total de doce torneos a lo largo de la temporada regular, más sendos campeonatos finales individual y por equipos. Cada torneo tiene una bolsa de 25 millones de dólares (20 millones a repartir en el torneo individual y 5 millones en la competición por equipos). El ganador se embolsa 4 millones, y cada integrante del equipo vencedor, 750.000. Los torneos que cierran la temporada poseen una bolsa especial. No se ha anunciado la cuantía a repartir en el torneo por equipos de 2024, pero en 2023 dicho evento tuvo una bolsa récord de 50 millones de dólares.

Each tournament has prizemoney of US$25 million (US$20 million in the individual and US$5 million in the team competition). The winner pockets $4 million, and each member of the winning team, $750,000. The tournaments that close the season have a special bonus pool. The amount to be distributed in the 2024 team tournament has not been announced, but in 2023 this event had a record purse of $50 million.

In this interview, the general manager of the 1997 Ryder Cup host club, Javier Reviriego, talks about the reigning U.S. Masters champion, a possible agreement between LIV and the major tours, and the tournament that will return to this globally renowned and award-winning golf course in summer.

the world of golf. What do you think of the criticism he has been subjected to? Jon is a person who has always spoken very clearly, he has been very transparent in his opinions, and he has always defended the fact that players have to compete where they decide, because in the end they are professionals. He has made a decision that he considers to be the best for him and for his family. It is a decision comparable to that of many European players who decided at some point to move to the PGA Tour. It should be remembered that they all decided to make the move to the U.S. because the prizemoney was much higher than on the DP World Tour. We can enter into the romantic debate of LIV or not LIV, of PGA Tour or not PGA Tour, but my opinion is that sooner or later everything will become normalised, everything will return to its course, and in the end the players will be able to play wherever they feel like playing, wherever they want to. Para este año, nuestras expectativas son muy altas, hemos analizado en detalle todos los aspectos a mejorar y haremos algunos cambios que darán mayor nivel al torneo y harán disfrutar a los espectadores. –¿Cuáles fueron en su opinión los mejores momentos del torneo? –Creo que hubo varios muy bonitos, hubo varias situaciones muy memorables en el hoyo 17. Recuerdo el segundo golpe de DeChambeau en ese hoyo el último día, recuerdo el shank que pegó Dustin Johnson, que luego fue capaz de hacer birdie… Y a mí, como tengo predilección especial por Mickelson, también me impresionaron mucho unos golpes suyos alrededor de green. –Observando la galería de fotos de ganadores en torneos de Valderrama que adornan algunas de las paredes de la casa club, no estaría mal que las acompañara una de Rahm…

–Hombre, a mí me encantaría . Sergio ya ha ganado tres veces, así que me gustaría que ganara Jon (quedó segundo en uno de los tres Andalucía Masters que disputó en Valderrama)… vamos a ver. Con lo competitivo que es, querrá lucirse y ganar en España. –Cambiando de tema, ¿qué le parece la normativa que USGA y R&A van a imponer sobre la limitación al vuelo de bola en un futuro próximo (2028 para profesionales y 2030 para amateurs)? –Es un asunto controvertido. El momento del golf, sobre todo a nivel amateur, es buenísimo. Desde el covid ha habido un crecimiento en el golf con más jugadores que nunca, con lo cual esta decisión espero que no afecte al amateur. Creo que a todos los que jugamos al golf nos gusta pegarle largo. El problema de la bola realmente es para un 0,5 por ciento de los golfistas, y además creo que hay otras maneras de complicar los campos para los grandes pegadores, no solo alargándolos. Hay otras formas que no sean limitando el vuelo de la bola, con lo cual no estoy seguro de que esta medida sea necesaria, pero hay que aceptarla. ■

Changing the subject, what do you think about the regulations that the USGA and R&A are planning to introduce in the near future on the limitation of ball flight (2028 for professionals and 2030 for amateurs)? It’s a controversial issue. Golf ’s momentum, especially at the amateur level, is very good. Since COVID there has been a growth in golf with more players than ever, so I hope this decision will not affect amateurs. I think all of us who play golf like to hit it long. The ball problem really is for 0.5 per cent of golfers, and I think there are other ways to complicate courses for big-hitters, not just lengthening them. There are ways other than limiting ball flight, so I’m not sure that this measure is necessary, but we have to accept it. ■

Quo vadis, Golf? Por Eduardo García Palacios

En esta sociedad tan tornadiza, en estos convulsos tiempos de la imprevisible y amenazante inteligencia artificial, sorprende que haya quien todavía se asombre por el hecho de el dinero mueva el mundo. Vale, vale, también la ambición de poder, el amor, el odio, las fobias, las filias... Pero don Dinero, siempre o casi siempre, al frente. Y que los profesionales de cualquier actividad que tengan el poder de optar a acceder honradamente a muchísimo dinero no desaprovechen esa oportunidad es algo normal y, sobre todo, muy humano. Transitamos por un valle de lágrimas en el que pastan becerros de oro a los que a la inmensa mayoría le gustaría estabular en beneficio propio. Por desgracia, hay una inmensa hipocresía cuando se critican decisiones ajenas que seguramente serían acertadísimas si el que las adoptara fuera el inquisidor de turno. Vive y deja vivir, siempre, eso sí, que la decisión personal no acarree víctimas colaterales. Viene por supuesto esta divagación a cuento del decisivo paso dado por Jon Rahm hacia las ya cada vez menos turbulentas aguas del LIV Golf. El golf profesional del máximo nivel

mundial no tiene por qué verse perjudicado por ello. Por el contrario, puede verse beneficiado si, como todos los indicios así parecen apuntar, se llega a un acuerdo entre los otrora irreconciliables contendientes (LIV Golf y PGA Tour). Si no se tuercen las negociaciones, el sentido y el bien común prevalecerán sobre intereses personales y crematísticos. El negocio del golf mundial y los aficionados a este deporte necesitan que se reconduzca la situación y que se llegue a un acuerdo para que el espectáculo deportivo siga presidiendo la escena con los mejores actores en una misma obra. No tiene sentido que los jugadores más destacados del mundo no puedan medir su talento con sus colegas del otro ‘bando’ en muchos de los torneos más señeros del calendario internacional. Este ambiente enrarecido es contraproducente

para la industria del golf, donde los sectores de la publicidad y el patrocinio mueven mucho dinero y preferirían obviamente concentrar sus inversiones en el producto más atractivo posible para los seguidores de este deporte. ¿Por qué los mandatarios del PGA Tour nos han de privar de disfrutar de los duelos más intensos entre Rahm y McIlroy, entre Cameron Smith y Scottie Scheffler, entre Brooks Koepka y Viktor Hovland, entre Bryson DeChambeau y Xander Schauffele, o entre Dustin Johnson y Jordan Spieth, por poner solo unos ejemplos? Es muy triste que muchos de los hasta anteayer grandes prohombres del golf no puedan –de momento– disputar los torneos más importantes de la temporada. Los máximos responsables de los circuitos PGA, DP World y LIV Golf deben esforzarse al límite para limar sus últimas asperezas y pensar, aunque se un poquito, en los aficionados al grandioso deporte del golf. ■

Golf… Quo Vadis? In this fickle society, during these convulsive times of unpredictable and threatening artificial intelligence, it is surprising that there are still those who are astonished by the fact that money moves the world. Okay, so does a lust for power, love, hate, phobias, philias... But money, always – or almost always – is at the forefront. And it is quite normal and, above all, human for professionals involved in any kind activity who have the power to access considerable amounts of money – in an honest way – to not waste that opportunity. We are walking through a “vale of tears” where golden calves graze and the vast majority of us would like to herd them into a stable for our own benefit. It is, therefore, immensely hypocritical to criticise other people’s decisions which would, if instead adopted by the inquisitors, surely be justified by them. Live and let live, provided, of course, that such personal decisions do not lead to collateral damage and victims. This literary digression comes in response to the decisive step taken by Jon Rahm into the increasingly less turbulent waters of LIV Golf. Professional golf at the highest global level has no reason to be threatened by his move. On the contrary, it may benefit golf if, as all indica32

tions seem to suggest, an agreement is reached between the once irreconcilable contenders (LIV Golf and PGA Tour). If the negotiations do not go awry, common sense and the common good will hopefully prevail over personal and financial interests. The international golf business and fans of this sport need the situation to be redirected and an agreement to be reached to ensure that our global golfing spectacle continues to prevail with all the finest actors performing in the same play. It makes no sense that some of the most outstanding golfers in the world cannot measure their talent and skills against colleagues from the other “side” in many of the most important tournaments on the international calendar. This rarefied atmosphere is counter-productive for the golf industry, where the advertising and sponsorship sectors move huge amounts

of money, and they would obviously prefer to concentrate their investments on the most attractive product possible – for golf spectators and followers. Why should PGA Tour officials deprive us of enjoying the most intense duels between Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy, between Cameron Smith and Scottie Scheffler, between Brooks Koepka and Viktor Hovland, between Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele, and between Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth – to give just a few examples? It is terribly sad that many of the great names in golf up to recently cannot – for the moment at least – play in some of the biggest tournaments of this new season. The chiefs of the PGA, DP World and LIV Golf circuits must do their utmost to iron out the last rough edges and think – even if just a little – about fans of the great sport of golf. ■

Miguel Ángel Jiménez, el Pisha, el Mecánico, el apasionado de los puros y el buen vino, sigue disfrutando e ilusionándose con el golf como cuando empezó a labrarse su exitoso futuro profesional, allá por 1982, cuando cumplió los 18. Tres años antes había abandonado sus estudios y se ganaba la vida trabajando en un garaje, además de recoger pelotas de golf y hacer de

With some 30 international victories between the European Tour and PGA Tour Champions, Jiménez – who also competed in four Ryder Cups – is a marathon all-rounder who became the oldest winner on the European Tour when he won the Spanish Open at the age of 50 years and 133 days. He also holds the record for the highest number of tournaments played on the European Tour: 721. –Para mí la diferencia es que jugamos tres vueltas en lugar de cuatro, a excepción de los majors; bueno, y también que en un torneo del circuito regular participan ciento y pico jugadores y en uno del senior solo 78. No hay cortes y todos jugamos las tres rondas. Esas creo son las diferencias básicas. No veo otras en cuanto a nivel de juego se refiere. Evidentemente los jugadores del PGA Tour o del Circuito Europeo son gente con mucha “hambre”, como teníamos nosotros también cuando éramos jóvenes. Tienen muchas ganas, espíritu competitivo y un altísimo nivel de juego. Los ves cada semana batiéndose el cobre, peleando, y cada semana puede ganar cualquiera de ellos. En el Champions, si te fijas, casi siempre son los mismos jugadores los que están arriba. Hay siete u ocho muy buenos que se disputan entre ellos los primeros puestos. La cosa suele estar entre Stricker, Ernie Els, Goosen, Bernhard Langer, Jerry Kelly, K.J. Choi, Alex Cejka y yo... Formamos un grupo destacado, con un nivel de juego altísimo, entre los que casi seguro van a estar los ganadores de cada semana. Es un grupo mucho más reducido que el de los que pueden a aspirar al triunfo en el circuito regular. –Pronto se os unirá Tiger... –Sí, y cuanto antes venga, mejor para nosotros porque va a ser muy bueno para este circuito y un gran revulsivo. Así que todos estamos deseando que venga pronto, que cumpla 50 ya y se incorpore. –Tú cumples 60 a principios de año... –Me convierto en sexagenario, sí. Aunque a veces me pregunto: ¿seguro?, je, je. –¿Un número redondo que implica mirar atrás, aunque sea de forma inconsciente? –O adelante... –¿Cuál piensas que ha sido el momento culmen de tu carrera? –No voy a decir que está por llegar, porque hay que ser realista... In the Champions, if you look at it closely, it’s almost always the same players at the top. There are seven or eight particularly good players who compete among themselves for the top spots. It’s essentially between Steve Stricker, Ernie Els, Retief Goosen, Bernhard Langer, Jerry Kelly, K.J. Choi, Alex Cejka and myself. We form the main group, and the winner each week will usually come from among us. It is a much smaller group than those who can aspire to win on the regular circuit.

He tenido épocas mejor que otras evidentemente, pero en general no me puedo quejar. He tenido muchos éxitos a lo largo de los años; ahora, ¿cuál ha sido el mejor de ellos? No lo sé. Eso sí, puedo decir rotundamente que el mejor año para mí fue 2004. –Has desarrollado un estilo de juego propio, reconocible... -Bueno, mi juego es más de la antigua escuela, más de jugar con la bola, moverla, más echarle imaginación... El juego de hoy es quizá más de poderío, más de potencia, de pegar más derecho y largo. Solo hay que ver a los jugadores que vienen ahora, que son todos ‘armarios’, físicamente unos portentos. –¿Qué te parece el LIV? –A mí todo lo que sea jugar al golf me parece bien, por supuesto. Yo creo que el LIV es una exhibición que hasta ahora, que yo sepa, no tiene estructura, no hay una escuela para entrar... Los jugadores acceden a ese tour fichados y son contratados, por decirlo de alguna forma, para jugar en este circuito y tienen que estar en todos los torneos porque para eso les pagan. Yo no tengo ninguna pega que poner, pero ahí están las controversias que ha habido y que hay: que si juegas este circuito no puedes jugar otros, que no pueden tener un ranking mundial porque solo hay 48 jugadores que salen al tiro, en pantalón corto... Yo creo que dejar tu nombre en la historia del golf es muy importante, ganar un major es muy importante, estar al lado de gente como Tiger, Severiano, Olázabal, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan es algo impagable, es lo máximo a lo que puede aspirar un jugador de alto nivel. I have had several highlights: 2004, when I won five times; 2010, with three victories; the four Ryder Cups I have played in; winning at Wentworth; winning at St Andrews; winning the (British) Senior Open; winning in Málaga; being the first Spaniard to win the Volvo Masters and what today would be the Race to Dubai, etc. There have been very good moments in my career. But I can definitely say that the best year for me was 2004. The format seems to me very good for a player in his late 30s or 40s, who sees that his career is already limited, and that it will be very difficult to put his name in the history books by winning majors. I think that stamping your name in golfing history is very important, winning a major is very important, playing next to people like Tiger, Severiano, Olazábal, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan is something priceless – it is the maximum aspiration for a top-level player. Now Jon Rahm can become an inspiration for the new generations. He has the skills and charisma to do so, so it is fortunate that in Spain we have players who can take up the baton. What do you think of Rahm? He is a spectacular player, one who has everything. He can win whatever he sets his mind to. How do you approach the future – how do you see yourself in a few years? I see myself in a good place. And if you ask me how long? I would say: as long as it lasts. As long as I keep having fun, keep making birdies and can still win I will keep playing. Now, the day that, even if I play well, I don’t even make 15th place, then why the hell am I still doing this? I’ve been travelling around the world for 35 years and that would be enough. I don’t know how to do anything else in my life, and this is what I like. I still have the bug and I have a great time competing. So, as long as this keeps working, I’ll be there. ■

La zona alrededor de San Roque y Sotogrande posee campos excepcionales que no es necesario referir. Tiene además la particularidad de su cercanía al Estrecho, lo que hace que los campos se jueguen de forma muy diferente en función del viente presente en el día. El campo Links de La Hacienda fue reformado recientemente, con ciertos retoques que han realzado lo que ya era un campo tremendamente atractivo y, sin duda, con las mejores vistas de todos los campos del sur de España. Un auténtico Links con vistas al mar en prácticamente todos los hoyos, lo que se ha acentuado con podas muy bien ejecutadas. La reforma, llevada a cabo de forma magistral por el diseñador Kurtis Bowman, tomó algo más de un año, comenzando en 2021 y abriendo de nuevo al juego el campo en el verano de 2022. he competition is tough. This course, and its sister layout La Hacienda Alcaidesa Heathland, is located in one of golf ’s premier destinations when it comes to top international quality courses. The area around San Roque and Sotogrande is home to several exceptional courses so well-known that they don’t need to be named here. It is also close to the Strait of Gibraltar, which makes the courses play very differently depending on the wind that is present on a particular day. The Links course at La Hacienda has been revamped, with certain touches that have enhanced what was already a tremendously attractive course and one that, without doubt, has the best views of all the courses in southern Spain. The 6th is a wide par-3 with a rolling green, followed by a par-5 with a steep downhill slope and the option of reaching a slippery green protected by a water hazard in two shots. The 8th is another shor t par-3 with a green behind a water hazard, which leads to the renovated and interesting 9th. Next to the 10th tee is a great beach bar, the aforementioned Calma restaurant, and fantastic par-5 11th.

El glúteo mayor (o máximo) es el músculo más grande y superficial, representando 2/3 del tamaño total. Es un potente extensor de la cadera (la empuja hacia delante y lleva la pierna hacia atrás) y su función secundaria es la de rotación externa y estabilizador de la pelvis. Contribuye por tanto a enderezar tu cuerpo en la subida de movimientos como peso muerto o sentadilla, y en el golf te ayudará a ser más estable a y pegar más fuerte. La repetitiva rotación de columna en rangos extremos, a la que son expuestos los jugadores ya de por sí, puede generar molestias en la zona lumbar pero, si a este contexto le sumamos una debilidad glútea, se pueden agudizar aún más los dolores en la zona lumbar, incluso potenciar la aparición de una lesión. A su vez, las personas con los glúteos débiles o inhibidos pueden sufrir dolores de rodilla (por inestabilidad) o incluso en las caderas. En los golfistas puede repercutir en la estabilidad de la pelvis tanto en la subida como en la bajada (sway/ slide) y también en la estabilidad de la rodilla. En definitiva, los glúteos en general van a repercutir en casi toda la secuencia cinética del swing y una debilidad en los mismos, además de lo anterior mencionado, no sólo nos puede llevar a cometer cualquier fallo técnico, sino incluso ¡TODOS! Así que, como verás, existe mas de una razón para no descuidarlos. A continuación te propongo unos ejercicios.

STRONG GLUTES – EFFICIENT SWING

he glutes comprise a muscular complex formed by the gluteus maximus, medius and minimus. These muscles provide mobility and stability for the pelvis. The gluteus maximus is the largest and most superficial muscle, representing two-thirds of the total size. It is a powerful hip extensor (it pushes the hip forward and brings the leg backwards) and its secondary function is external rotation and stabilisation of the pelvis. It therefore contributes to straightening your body during rising movements such as deadlift or squat, and in golf it will help you become more stable and hit harder. The gluteus medius and gluteus minimus are located on the side of the top part of the leg, in the hip area. Their function is to separate your hip or leg with respect to the medial area of your body. They also provide stability for your pelvis. Weakness in the gluteus medius often leads to

poor stability and low back pain. The repetitive rotation of the spine in extreme ranges, to which golfers are exposed, can generate discomfort in the lower back but, if we add gluteal weakness to this context, it can further aggravate pain in the lower back – and increase the risk of injury. In turn, people with weak or inhibited buttocks may suffer knee pain (due to instability) or even hip pain. In golfers it can affect the stability of the pelvis (both sway and slide) and also the stability of the knee. In short, the glutes in general will affect almost the entire kinetic sequence of the swing and any weakness in them – in addition to the above-mentioned – can not only lead to one specific technical failure, but even all of them! So, as you will see, there is more than one reason not to neglect this part of the body. Below are some recommended exercises.

EJERCICIO 1 ACTIVACIÓN GLÚTEOS CON GOMA ELÁSTICA. Ponte la goma elástica justo en las rodillas (rótulas), colócate en posición de media sentadilla y desde esa posición debes abrir (rotación externa) las rodillas todo lo que puedas. Pon el foco en tus glúteos, es decir, que la fuerza para generar esa apertura salga de los glúteos y si notas que les cuesta activarse, puedes ayudarlos con feedback táctil (poner las manos en los glúteos). Este ejercicio lo recomiendo como un“activador”antes de los ejercicios de fuerza con mayor carga, como activador de la zona a potenciar, en este caso los glúteos. Aunque para un jugador principiante puede ser parte de los ejercicios de la parte central. EXERCISE 1 GLUTES ACTIVATION WITH A RUBBER BAND. Place a rubber band on your kneecaps, move into a half-squat position and from that position you should open (external rotation) your knees as much as possible. Put the focus on your glutes: i.e. that the force to generate this opening comes from the glutes. If you notice that it is difficult for them to activate, you can help with tactile feedback (place your hands on the buttocks). I recommend this exercise as an “activator”before strength exercises with a greater load, as an activator of the area to be enhanced – in this case the buttocks. For a beginner golfer, however, it can be part of the core exercises. EJERCICIO 2 PULL THROUGH. Colócate de espaldas a una polea con la cuerda colocada abajo del todo. EXERCISE 2 PULL THROUGH . Stand with your back to a pulley, with the rope positioned at the bottom. To make it a real challenge for your glutes, set a demanding weight: i.e. make it hard for you to remain stable on your feet. Do not move backwards – that is, towards the machine – as that is also a challenge for maintaining stability. From there perform a hip hinge and then return to the upright position, contracting (locking) your glutes with momentum. This is a good exercise for working on power and speed.

EJERCICIO 3 SENTADILLA A UNA PIERNA CON APOYO. En este ejercicio es importante no colocar muy alto el pie que está apoyado en la pared; si no, te va a limitar el rom (rango óptimo de movimiento) al bajar. Tantea la altura y distancia de la pierna adelantada de manera tal que puedas bajar lo máximo posible. A su vez, para poner mayor énfasis en la activación del glúteo, al bajar inclinar un poco el torso (no bajar muy perpendicular), llevando la pelvis y glúteo hacia atrás y abajo. En este ejercicio puedes jugar con el timing según el objetivo y nivel del jugador, pero en el caso de los golfistas que ya están familiarizados con el ejercicio (nivel medio/ alto) es interesante que la subida sea lo más rápida posible para trabajar la explosividad del glúteo que es como queremos que se comporte durante el swing.

EXERCISE 3 ONE-LEGGED SQUAT WITH SUPPORT. In this exercise it is important not to place the foot that is leaning on the wall too high. Otherwise, it will limit your ROM (optimal range of motion) on the way down. Test the height and distance of the forward leg so that you can squat as far as possible. At the same time, to place more emphasis on gluteal activation, when lowering, slightly tilt your torso (albeit not too perpendicular), bringing the pelvis and gluteus backwards and downwards. In this exercise you can play with the timing according to the objective and your personal level, but in the case of golfers who are already familiar with the exercise (medium/high level) it is advisable for the ascent to be as fast as possible in order to work the explosiveness of the gluteus – which is how we want it to behave during the swing. 59

uantifiquemos las probabilidades de hacer un ace, basadas en el Registro Nacional de Hoyos en Uno que existe en Estados Unidos. Las de un jugador profesional del Circuito Americano: 1 de 3.000; un handicap bajo: 1 de 5.000, y un jugador medio: 1 de 12.000. Pues bien, hay un golfista al que esas estadísticas le traen al pairo porque ha embocado 51 hoyos en uno en su vida… y no es un extraterrestre. Con tal registro, sus posibilidades de hacer ace en un par 3 son de 1 a 290. En el estado de la Estrella Solitaria, cuna de leyendas del golf como Ben Hogan y Byron Nelson, no era extraño que los niños empezaran desde pequeños a practicar este deporte. Allí, al oeste de Texas, en Odessa, nacía a mediados de los años 50 un chico con un talento muy especial y que con el tiempo llegaría a convertirse en el Rey de los Hoyos en Uno. Se llamaba –y se sigue llamando– Mancil Davis. Lo introdujo su padre en este deporte a la edad de 8 años y enseguida empezó a despuntar, y sólo tres años después empezaría a demostrar su extraña y extraordinaria habilidad para embocar directamente desde el tee de salida. Empezó a hacer hoyos en uno… y muchos. De hecho, en un período de doce meses desde los 11 hasta los 12 años, Davis embocó ¡ocho! La buena noticia para el muchacho fue que no se anotaba esos certeros golpes mientras estaba jugando solo, sino que los estaba haciendo en torneos oficiales de la Junior PGA. And an average player : 1 out of 12,000. There is at least one golfer who most likely doesn’t pay serious attention to these statistics, because he has scored 51 holes-in-one in his life. And no, he is not an alien. With such a record, his chances of carding an ace on a par-3 are 1 in 290. In the Lone Star State, bir thplace of golf legends including Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, it is not uncommon for children to star t playing the spor t at a young age. There, in Odessa, West Texas, a boy with a ver y special talent was born in the mid-1950s, and he would eventually become the King of Aces. His name was – and still is – Mancil Davis. He was introduced to the spor t by his father at the age of eight and he immediately began to excel. Just three years later he would begin to demonstrate his uncanny and extraordinar y ability to hole out directly from the tee. He star ted making holes-in-one – and lots of them. In fact, in a 12-month period from age 11 to 12, Davis scored eight. The good news for the young boy was that he wasn’t making these shots while playing alone: he was achieving them in official Junior PGA tournaments. home forced him to return to Texas after just one year of college. He tried his luck on the professional circuits, competing in Monday qualifiers and playing Canadian Tour tournaments. Eventually, Davis ended up making a living in professional golf, but not as a player. By the early 1970s, he was earning more carr ying the clubs of pros such as Hale Irwin, Tom Weiskopf and Doug Sanders than playing golf with his own clubs. En ellos, para clasificarse para las semifinales, los golfistas tenían que dejar la bola en un círculo de 1,8 metros de diámetro situado a 113 metros de los tees en el campo de prácticas. Cada tiro costaba un dólar. Si conseguías meter dos bolas en el círculo, te clasificabas para pegar dos tiros en las semifinales. Si hacías un hoyo en uno en la fase de clasificación, pasabas directamente a la final. Las semifinales consistían en un torneo de bola más cercana a bandera, y los 25 con mejor puntería pasaban a la final. Es en esta última fase cuando cada golfista pegarba una bola desde 135 metros hasta el green. La bandera del millón de dólares se colocaba en el centro del green, y a su alrededor se ubicaban 18 banderas adicionales, con sendos premios de 10.000 dólares cada una para quien logase embocar.

LUCRATIVE MODUS VIVENDI Until he suffered the ruptured Achilles heel and subsequent stroke, Davis made a highly lucrative living. He charged from $5,000 a day, travelling the country holding clinics, participating in corporate or charity events, and organising hole-in-one tournaments with million-dollar prizes. The latter events, known as Ace Wild, took place over several days and could have as many as one thousand participants. To qualify for the semi-finals, golfers had to leave the ball within a circle 1.8 metres in diameter and located 113 metres from tees on the driving range. Each shot cost one dollar. If you managed to get two balls in the circle, you qualified to hit two shots in the semi-finals. If you made a hole-in-one in the qualifying round, you went directly to the finals. The semi-finals consisted of a closest-to-the-flag tournament, and the 25 with the best shots would advance to the finals. It was in this last phase that each golfer hit a ball from 135 metres to the green. The million-dollar flag was placed in the centre of the green, and 18 additional flags were placed around it, with prizes of $10,000 for each golfer who managed to sink their ball.

La Gala del Golf Español 2023 acogió asimismo la entrega de las Medallas y Placas al Mérito en Golf, un total de diecinueve galardones que han recaído, en su categoría de Oro, en Elías Bendodo –impulsor de numerosas iniciativas encaminadas a la proyección deportiva, turística y social del golf en la Costa del Sol– y en los componentes de los equipos ganadores que no poseían con anterioridad esta distinción en el Europeo Absoluto Masculino –Jaime Montojo, Ángel Ayora y Joseba Torres– y en el Europeo Absoluto Femenino: Cayetana Fernández, Carolina López-Chacarra, Julia López, Lucía López, Carla Tejedo y Carla Bernat. Además de esto, otros muchos golfistas han aportado su talento para construir un año más que sobresaliente, caso del doblete de Pablo Larrazábal en el DP World Tour, punta de lanza de un listado rico e ilustre donde asimismo brillan las victorias conseguidas en los distintos circuitos masculinos por Jorge Campillo, Eugenio López-Chacarra, David Puig, Lucas Vacarisas, Quim Vidal y José Manuel Pardo. En categoría femenina, Carlota Ciganda, Carmen Alonso, Nuria Iturrioz y Marta Martín también saborearon las mieles del triunfo, destacando la sensacional actuación de la citada Carlota Ciganda en la Solheim Cup celebrada en Finca Cortesín, en donde ejerció de auténtica heroína. Masculino y Femenino, donde Carla Bernat también ganó la plata. En escalones inferiores, quedaron diversos equipos españoles para recoger las medallas de bronce en el Mundial Absoluto Femenino por

Elías Bendodo recibió la Medalla de Oro al Mérito en Golf como impulsor de numerosas iniciativas encaminadas a la proyección deportiva, turística y social del golf en la Costa del Sol Equipos y en el Europeo Sub 16 por Equipos, donde a título individual Raúl Gómez subió asimismo al podio para recoger su medalla de bronce. Todo ello sin olvidar la espectacular temporada de la castellonense Rocío Tejedo, una de las grandes protagonistas del año merced a sus cinco triunfos individuales nacionales e internacionales y por sus aportaciones a la victoria en seis competiciones colectivas del más alto nivel, con mención especial para el Europeo Sub 18 y la Ping Junior Solheim Cup. Además, pasaron por el escenario para recoger sus galardones las in-

tegrantes del equipo español que ganó la prestigiosa Copa RCG Sotogrande, Campeonato Europeo de Naciones, así como las golfistas que formaron parte de los equipos ganadores en la Vagliano Trophy, Patsy Hankins Trophy y Junior Ryder Cup. Julia López y Carolina López-Chacarra como responsables de grandes resultados en la Liga Universitaria de Estados Unidos, así como de Macarena Campomanes y Ane Urchegui por acabar primeras en el Internacional de España Senior Femenino y en el Internacional de Portugal Mid Amateur, completaron un listado de triunfos femeninos excepcional. En categoría masculina los aplausos se centraron también en Ángel Ayora, Jacobo Cestino, Marcel Fonseca y Jorge Hao, que en su momento levantaron los trofeos del Internacional de Portugal, el Internacional de España Senior y el Jacques Leglise Trophy. Todo ello sin olvidar, entre los más jóvenes, la pujante irrupción de Juan Miró, Adriana García Terol y Samuel Love en el panorama internacional tras ganar los dos primeros el Internacional de Inglaterra Sub 14 y colgarse la medalla de bronce al cuello del Evian Juniors Cup. DG GOLF ACADEMY by David Gil DAVID GIL tenía 19 años cuando comenzó a trabajar, en 1998, como profesional de golf en Almenara (Sotogrande), creando la primera academia CAR de Andalucía. Viaja posteriormente a Inglaterra, donde trabajó en la Academia de David Leadbetter. A su vuelta, creó la Escuela de Golf para Juniors de Sotogrande, de donde han salido grandes jugadores profesionales . Siempre en el mundo de la enseñanza , en 2010 se involucró en un proyecto internacional en Sicilia, donde estuvo muy vinculado a los equipos y entranadores nacionales de Italia. Con un Master en Dirección y Gestión en Campos de Golf, David ha trabajado en Operaciones de Golf en los mejores campos de Andalucía, hasta que en 2018 se incorpora al proyecto de Villa Padierna Golf Academy by Michael Campbell. En 2021, David decide crear su propia academia de golf, DG GOLF ACADEMY, con base en Marbella y recientemente en Suiza. En la actualidad, David es profesional del Club de Golf La Cañada, en Sotogrande.

DAVID GIL was 19 when, in 1998, he started working as a golf professional in Almenara (Sotogrande), creating the first CAR academy in Andalucía. He subsequently travelled to England where he worked at the David Leadbetter Academy. On his return, he created the Sotogrande Junior Golf School, where players who went on to become top professionals have been coached. Always linked to education, in 2010 he became involved in an international project in Sicily, where he was closely associated with Italy’s national teams and coaches. With a masters degree in management and golf course management, David worked in golf operations for Andalucía’s leading courses. In 2018 he joined “TGA Golf Academy by Michael Campbell”. Aprovechando la oportunidad que me da este medio y agradecido siempre a la revista Andalucia Golf/España Golf, quiero en este primer articulo de 2024 desearos a todos un feliz año nuevo y que este os venga cargado de mucha salud y buen golf a todos. En mi caso, en el año 2023 he tenido la suerte que la Junta Directiva junto al gerente del Club de Golf La Cañada me han dado la oportunidad de formar parte de su equipo en su Escuela, catalogada como una de las mejores escuelas de golf de España . Mi introducción está enfocada en este primer número a agradecer y a poner en valor este tipo de proyectos, que son el presente y el futuro de nuestro deporte. Las escuelas y academias de golf son el lugar perfecto para dar a conocer nuestro deporte y donde niños a partir de 6 años hasta adultos de cualquier edad pueden comenzar a dar sus primeros pasos en el golf. Es cierto que cada vez hay más iniciativas y nuevos proyectos de campos de 9 hoyos e incluso campos de prácticas municipales en lugares de nuestra geografia que hace unos años eran impensables. Por este motivo pienso que la fábrica del golf está en expansión en nuestro país en gran parte por el trabajo y esfuerzo que se está haciendo desde las instituciones. Así que antes de pasar a nuestra primera clase del año, agradezco el trabajo y esfuerzo a todos los que están luchando por hacer crecer este bonito deporte desde las bases. Y ahora empezamos ya a con la clase de golf.

Taking advantage of the opportunity that this magazine gives me, and always grateful to Andalucia Golf/España Golf, in this first article of 2024 I would like to wish you all a happy new year and express the hope that 2024 comes loaded with plenty of good health and golf for all of you. In my case, in 2023 I was fortunate that the board of directors and manager of La Cañada Golf Club gave me the opportunity to be part of their academy team – especially as it is ranked as one of the best golf schools in Spain. My introduction to this issue is focused on appreciating the value of these types of projects, which are both the present and the future of our sport. Golf schools and academies are the perfect place to raise awareness of golf, and they are a place where children from six years old to adults of any age can begin to take their first steps in golf. It is true that there is an increasing number of initiatives and new projects for nine-hole courses and even municipal driving ranges in areas that a few years ago were unthinkable. That is why I believe that golf is expanding in our country largely because of the work and efforts being made by institutions and the authorities. So, before we move on to our first lesson of the year, I would like to thank all those who are fighting to make this beautiful sport grow from the grassroots. Now let’s start our lesson.

Muchas veces tratamos de trabajar en partes de nuestro swing sin lograr el objetivo marcado, ya que el fallo puede que venga por un tema de postura en nuestro stance más que por un tema técnico. En estos casos aconsejo trabajar un poco sin palo centrándonos en el movimiento del cuerpo. Hoy quiero hablaros sobre dos partes de nuestro swing que podremos trabajar sin necesidad del palo de golf y que si las entrenamos nos ayudarán mucho a la hora de conseguir mejores impactos, mayor distancia y mucho más control. 1.- LA POSTURA DE NUESTRO BRAZO GUÍA 2.- LA POSTURA DE IMPACTO DE NUESTRO CUERPO

Many times we try to work on parts of our swing without achieving the goal, as failure may derive from a posture issue in our stance rather than a technical issue. In these cases I advise people to work a little without using a club, instead focusing on body movement. This issue I would like to talk about two parts of your swing that you can work on without a golf club. This will greatly help you achieve a better impact, more distance and much more control. 1.- POSTURE OF YOUR GUIDING ARM 2.- IMPACT POSTURE OF YOUR BODY

In many cases, as I have explained, the cause is bad posture in the stance, and the consequence is that during the backswing the hands are blocked, causing a poor impact and deflected shots. How can you rectify this? First of all, keep in mind the steps we have explained for the stance. Then remember that your right hand during a full swing will point to three different places.

Try this exercise with a half swing. On the set-up: the right hand will point TO THE TARGET. On the backswing: the right hand will point TO THE FRONT. At the end of the swing: the right hand will point BACK. How to place your right arm and hand at impact: Exercise WITHOUT your golf club. - Stand in a stance position with a tee on the ground right in the centre. - Hold a ball with your right hand, with the posture explained in the stance section. - Slightly bend your left knee, to create a little bit of tilt. - Move up to a mid-swing. - On the way down, release the ball so that it hits the ground in front of the tee. This exercise will represent the perfect posture and body angle for you to use ➠ later with your club.

2.- EL CUERPO DURANTE EL SWING ¡Cuántos problemas trae intentar quedarse quietos!, pero puedo entender que un jugador amateur trate de hacerlo pensando que así tendrá menos probabilidades de hacer un mal golpe, sin pensar que esta decisión hara que su cuerpo se bloquee sin que pueda girar bien. ¿Cómo tendremos que hacerlo para girar sin bloquearnos? La postura inicial de cuerpo. • Marcar bien los ángulos del cuerpo • La parte superior ligeramente inclinada • Peso ligeramente a la izquierda • Piernas ligeramente flexionadas En la subida: • Giramos ligeramente caderas y hombros • La postura y pesos del cuerpo se mantienen prácticamente igual que en el stance En el Impacto: Aquí es donde vienen la gran mayoría de los problemas. Al inicio del swing tenemos en nuestro tren inferior una FLEXIÓN, pues la mayoría de los problemas vienen por seguir manteniendo esa FLEXIÓN inicial. Los jugadores con este problema de BLOQUEO,

el típico (no mover la cabeza), mantienen el tren inferior bloqueado y necesitan separar sus brazos del cuerpo para buscar espacio, golpeando en muchos casos en forma de TOP. ¿Cómo lo vamos a solucionar? No se trata de FLEXIÓN de inicio y FLEXIÓN de impacto: tenemos que buscar flexión de inicio y extensión de impacto. La cadera izquierda en la bajada y a través del golpe necesita tener una EXTENSIÓN para que podamos crear espacio y golpear con los brazos rectos. Ejercicio para trabajar la postura y la extensión en el impacto: • Colocaos en postura de stance • Clavad un varilla en el suelo con un ángulo de 45 grados • Colocaos un tee debajo de cada axila. • Sujetad la varilla con un grip neutro • Con ayuda de vuestra rotación, sacad la varilla del suelo • Con la secuencia de un swing, buscad un final de swing con buena extensión • Tenéis que terminar el swing sin que los tees se caigan. ■ Buena postura de impacto (en tren inferior ha creado buena extensión) Exercise with the shaft to create a better extension on your shot.

2.- YOUR BODY DURING THE SWING So many problems are caused by trying to stay still. However, I can understand that an amateur golfer might try to do this believing they will have less chance of hitting a bad shot, without realising that this decision will cause their body to block and not be able to turn properly. How can you turn without blocking? Initial body posture: - Mark the angles of the body well. - Upper body slightly inclined. - Weight slightly to the left. - Legs slightly bent. On the upswing: - Slightly rotate hips and shoulders - Posture and body weight remain virtually the same as in the stance. On impact: This is where most of the problems occur. At the beginning of the swing you will have a flexion in your lower body, so most of the problems come from maintaining that initial flexion. Players with this blocking problem (typically, not moving the head) maintain their lower body blocked and need to separate their arms from the body to find space, in many

cases hitting a topped shot. How do you solve this? It’s not about an initial flexion and impact flexion: you need to seek an initial flexion and impact extension. The left hip on the downswing and through the strike needs to have an extension so that you can create space and hit the ball with straight arms. Exercise to work on stance and extension through impact: - Get into the stance posture. - Embed a shaft into the ground at a 45-degree angle. - Place a tee under each armpit. - Hold the shaft with a neutral grip. - With the help of your rotation, pull the shaft out of the ground. - Within the swing sequence, aim to finish your swing with a good extension. - You must end the swing without the tees falling down. ■

s Jan Sonnevi una de esas agraciadas personas por las que parece que los años sí pasan en balde. Disfruta ciertamente de una envidiable joven madurez. Jan fue, hace ya cuatro décadas, uno de los primeros profesionales suecos en jugar en el Circuito Europeo, disputó para su país cuatro Copas del Mundo y dirigió cuatro campos de golf en la Costa del Sol. Ha diseñado campos en Argentina, de donde es originaria su esposa y donde ha vivido y trabajado durante prolongados periodos de su existencia. Ahora, tras una larga estancia en aquellas tierras hispanoamericanas, ha regresado a la Costa del Sol para instalarse –esta vez ya de forma definitiva, dice– y poner su dilatada y experta experiencia a disposición de los clubes de golf que quieran mejorar su negocio

El jugador sueco colgó los palos del Circuito Europeo y en 1986 se enroló en la gestión de un gran campo de golf costasoleño gracias a su asesoramiento en todos los aspectos que conciernen a un campo de golf, desde diseño hasta gestión. Su empresa se llama Sonnevi & Associates Golf Design & Consulting. Tras su actividad como jugador del Tour Europeo y, aunque revalidó varios años la tarjeta para seguir jugando el Circuito, Sonnevi decidió emprender nuevos rumbos profesionales, convencido de que su futuro en el Tour no le iba a deparar ya grandes alegrías. Conocía bien la Costa del Sol, donde veraneaba con su familia desde niño –”casi me crié acá”, apostilla en un español con leve acento argentino–, y le surgió una oportunidad laboral que decidiría el nuevo rumbo de su vida. Estaba disputando un torneo en su Estocolmo natal cuando le contactó el inglés Mel Pyatt para ofrecerle el puesto de gerente de Atalaya Golf (Estepona) que él iba a dejar vacante para dirigir la creación y lanzamiento del exitoso Volvo Masters. He certainly still enjoys an enviably youthful maturity. Four decades ago, Jan was one of the first Swedish professionals to play on the European Tour. He competed in four World Cups for his country and went on to manage four golf clubs on the Costa del Sol. He has designed courses in Argentina, where his wife is originally from and where he has lived and worked for long periods of his life. Now, after an extended stay in those Hispanic lands, he has returned to the Costa del Sol to settle down – this time definitively, he says – and put his extensive and expert experience at the disposal of golf clubs that are keen to boost and improve their

The Swedish player hung up his Tour clubs and in 1986 he took on the management of one of the Costa del Sol’s finest golf courses. business operations thanks to his advice on all golfing aspects from design to management. His company is called Sonnevi & Associates Golf Design & Consulting. Following his time as an active European Tour player – and in spite of retaining his card for several years, which allowed him to continue playing on the Tour – Sonnevi decided to embark on a new professional path, convinced that his future on the Tour was not going to bring him great joys. He knew the Costa del Sol well, as he had spent summers there with his family since he was a child – “I almost grew up here,” he says in Spanish with a slight Argentine accent – and a job opportunity arose that would determine the new direction in his life. He was playing a tournament in his native Stockholm when Englishman Mel Pyatt contacted him to offer him the position of manager of Atalaya Golf (Estepona), which he was going to leave in order to manage the creation and launch of the successful Volvo Masters. So the Swedish player hung up his Tour clubs and in 1986 he took on the management of one of the Costa del Sol’s finest golf courses. In early 1990 he was contacted by the developers of La Cala Resort (Mijas), and he decided to join that hugely exciting project, which was being launched practically from scratch. “The idea,” ➠

ilusionante que empezaba prácticamente desde cero. “La idea”, rememora, “era quedarme allí mucho tiempo, pero me llamaron de Las Brisas (Marbella) a finales de los 90 y acepté el cambio porque para mí era algo emocional, ya que era el club de mi padre y yo jugué de chico allí y también el Abierto de España varias veces”. Permaneció en ese prestigioso club como gerente menos de dos años porque su mente y sus deseos estaban puestos en Argentina, país con el que siempre ha tenido una relación muy estrecha, tanto por el origen de su esposa como por haber disputado muchos torneos allí y tener o haber tenido numerosos amigos golfistas como Cabrera, Gato Romero, Chino Fernández o De Vicenzo. Ya al otro lado del charco Atlántico, aparcó su faceta como gerente de clubes y empezó a diseñar campos de golf, una actividad que siempre le había apasionado. Creó en 2002 el campo de San Eliseo, a las afueras de Buenos Aires, área que alberga más de doscientos campos de golf. El atractivo de ese nuevo club lo convirtió en sede de los más grandes torneos profesionales del país. Tras un lustro por aquellos pagos americanos, decidió retornar a la Costa del Sol y se encargó de dirigir durante unos años otro gran campo, el marbellí Los Naranjos, diseñado por Robert Trent Jones al igual que el de Las Brisas. Sonnevi participó a fondo en el desarrollo del sector del golf en la zona y fue uno de los fundadores de la Asociación Comercial de Campos de Golf de Andalucía. “También me involucré mucho en la PGA de Andalucía”, dice, “y siento mucho orgullo de haber sido el único extranjero que estuvo en su junta directiva, donde fui secretario durante varios años. En esa época se hicieron muchos proams y muchas cosas. Fue una satisfacción no solamente trabajar como gerente en diferentes clubes, sino también formar parte del desarrollo del golf en la Costa del Sol. En La Cala fuimos pioneros en utilizar aguas recicladas, que después se hizo obligatorio por ley”. Después de su etapa en Los Naranjos, hizo de nuevo la maleta para poner rumbo en 2009 a su querida y añorada Argentina para diseñar su segundo campo, el de La Providencia Resort & Country Club, igualmente en la zona de Buenos Aires y considerado entre los diez mejores del país. at the end of the nineties and I agreed to move there because for me it was quite emotional and sentimental, as it was my father’s club and I played there as a boy, and also the Spanish Open on various occasions.” He remained at that renowned club as manager for under two years, as his mind and desires were set on moving to Argentina. He has always had a very close relationship with that country, because of both his wife’s origins and the fact he had played numerous tournaments there and had many golfing friends, including Ángel Cabrera, Eduardo “Gato” Romero, Vicente “Chino” Fernández and Roberto De Vicenzo. Once on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, he put aside his facet as a club manager and began designing golf courses, an activity he had always been passionate about. In 2002, he created the San Eliseo course on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, an area that is home to more than 200 golf courses. The attractive appeal of this new club converted it into a top venue for major professional tournaments in Argentina. Then, after five years in South America, he decided to return to the Costa del Sol, where he managed another great course for several years: Marbella’s Los Naranjos, designed by Robert Trent Jones (also the designer of Las Brisas). Sonnevi was deeply involved in the development of the golf industry in this area and was one of the founders of the Asociación Comercial de Campos de Golf de Andalucía (Andalucian Golf Courses Trade Association). “I was also very involved in the Andalucía PGA,” he says, “and I feel very proud to have been the only foreigner on its board of directors, where I was secretary for several years. A lot of pro-ams and many other initiatives were undertaken during that time. It was hugely satisfying not only to work as the manager at different clubs but also to be part of the development of golf on the Costa del Sol. At La Cala we were pioneers in using recycled water, which later became mandatory by law.” After his time at Los Naranjos, he once again packed his bags to return to his beloved Argentina, in 2009, to design a second course, La Providencia Resort & Country Club, also in ➠

De 25 años, Aditi Ashok sumaba en el magnífico escenario de Las Brisas su quinta victoria en el Ladies European Tour, el segundo de la temporada tras el cosechado en Kenia a primeros de febrero, un inicio y final de año triunfal que la convierten en jugadora a seguir con enorme potencial presente y futuro. Twenty-five-year-old Ashok thus added a fifth Ladies European Tour title to her tally, and the second of the season after her victory in Kenya in earlyFebruary, a triumphant start and end to the year that marks her out as a player with enormous present and future potential. Playing in the final group with Van Damm and Australian Kirsten Rudgeley, Ashok took seven holes to make her mark after a slow start. Rudgeley barely retained her provisional leader status until the 8th hole, when Van Dam overtook her after a second consecutive birdie. During the early stages of the final day, five players were within one shot of Rudgeley, but things began to unravel for them and Peláez became Van Damm’s closest challenger. The Dutch star seemed headed for what would have been her third Spanish Open victory (after 2018 and 2019), but Askok started to make her own charge, with four birdies in five holes from the 13th to 17th. Me siento muy contenta, me siento muy bien, consigo disfrutar en el campo y para mí es como una victoria. Me he visto con posibilidades de ganar, pero al final yo juego mi golf, intento hacer las menos posibles y lo que pase a mi alrededor no depende de mí. Lo he intentado hasta el último hoyo y no ha podido ser esta vez, pero muy contenta en general. El apoyo del público español es muy valioso. Jugar en casa siempre me hace muy feliz”. Por otra parte, la segunda edición del Trofeo Celia Barquín, que premia a la mejor jugadora amateur del Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España, recayó en Andrea Revuelta. La madrileña concluyó en el puesto séptimo, con un total de 278 golpes (-10), y fue además la segunda mejor española del torneo, por detrás de Ana Peláez. The average age of all the winners was 26.93 years. The youngest was American Alexa Pano (19 years) and the oldest, Carmen Alonso (38 years and 351 days). María Hernández was the only Spaniard to rank number one in the LET’s main statistical categories, and she achieved it twice: 83.22 per cent for “greens in regulation” and 89.80 for “driving accuracy”. CAMPO DE CAMPEONES Hay muy pocos campos en España que hayan acogido torneos internacionales de talla mundial y a jugadores legendarios en la historia de este deporte. Las Brisas es una de esas escasísimas joyas y es además historia viva del golf en Marbella. Cuando se estrenó el campo, en 1969, el legendario Robert Trent Jones había hecho ya Sotogrande y poco después diseñaría también Valderrama, la élite de la élite. Entre los grandes hitos del RCG Las Brisas, destaca la Copa del Mundo disputada en 1973, en la que el equipo estadounidense, formado por Johnny Miller y Jack Nicklaus, se alzó con la victoria superando a los sudafricanos Gary Player y Hugh Baiocchi. Miller se llevó también el título de campeón individual, con una ventaja de tres golpes sobre Player. Tres años antes, Las Brisas había acogido su primer gran torneo profesional de carácter internacional, el Open de España, que coronó como campeón a Ángel Gallardo. En la década de los 80 el campo siguió acogiendo grandes torneos, como el Open de España en 1983 y 1987. El primero lo ganó Eamonn Darcy, quedando segundo Manuel Piñero, y el título de 1978 se lo adjudicó Nick Faldo, con Seve Ballesteros segundo empatado con Hugh Baiocchi. En el 89 volvió a jugarse en Las Brisas la Copa del Mundo, y fue el diluvio (se jugaron sólo 36 hoyos). Los australianos Wayne Grady y Peter Fowler se impusieron y José María Cañizares y Chema Olazábal quedaron subcampeones. En 1990 se jugaba en Las Brisas el Open del Mediterráneo y lo ganaba Ian Woosnam, siendo segundos Eduardo Romero y Miguel Ángel Martín. En 1991, el campo marbellí acogió el que sería en su momento el torneo mejor dotado de un sólo día: 450.000 dólares, que se jugaron en un skins game Curtis Strange, Mark Calcavecchia, Bernhard Langer y John Bland. Para poder apreciar aquella cifra sólo señalar que suponía entonces tres veces más que lo que ganó Ian Baker Finch cuando logró alzarse con el triunfo en el Open Británico la semana siguiente. También en el 91 se jugó aquí el Benson & Hedges Tropy, torneo por parejas mixtas que era ganado los sueco Anders Forsbrand y Helen Alfredsson.

A GIANT AMONG GIANTS In the history of Spanish golf, very few courses have hosted top global tournaments and attracted legendary golfers to their fairways. Las Brisas is one of those rare jewels. Robert Trent Jones had already completed Sotogrande and shortly after he would also design Valderrama, the elite of the elite. Those of a certain age and a good memory – or others with an interest in history – will recall the 1973 World Cup won by Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller for the US. It almost seems like yesterday that Miller carded 65 in the second round – but it is now 45 years later. In the 1980s the course continued to host major tournaments: for example, the 1983 and 1987 Spanish Opens – the latter won by Nick Faldo in a tough battle against Severiano Ballesteros. In 1989, the World Cup returned to Las Brisas, together with severe flooding. So much rain fell that the event was reduced to 36 holes, with Australians Wayne Grady and Peter Fowler winning on a blanket of water, and José María Cañizares and José María Olazábal finishing second. Two years later, in 1991, Las Brisas was the venue for what – at the time – was the most lucrative one-day event: $450,000 dollars for a skins game involving Curtis Strange, Mark Calcavecchia, Bernhard Langer and John Bland.To have an idea how much that meant two decades ago, the prize fund was three times the amount won by Ian Baker-Finch as British Open champion one week later. There is no doubt that this is one of Robert Trent Jones’ best creations. It is a perfect example of how to design a course the right way.

Ganaron el viaje a México Norberto Pérez Díaz y Fernando Guinda Pérez, (de primera categoría), Roberto Ramiro Abril y Francisco Javier Gavira Padilla (en segunda categoría) y, como ganador scratch, Timo Van T Zelfde. El premio consistió en un viaje con vuelo y estancia de una semana en régimen de todo incluido, más cuatro rondas de golf en los tres mejores campos de la zona: PGA Riviera Maya, Playa Paraíso y El Camaleón Mayakoba, donde hace unos meses se había celebrado uno de los torneos del LIV, por primera vez en tierras mexicanas. El hotel anfitrión fue Bahía Príncipe Gran Tulum, un magnífico alojamiento de lujo totalmente reformado recientemente y situado a medio camino entre Playa del Carmen y Tulum en un gran complejo que cuenta con otros tres espléndidos hoteles junto a la playa, y con su propio club de golf, que en realidad tiene dos campos, puesto que hay un recorrido de 18 y otro espectacular de nueve hoyos. El PGA Riviera Maya sorprendió muy positivamente a la “expedición” española, tanto por el diseño de Robert Trent Jones junior como por el mantenimiento. The host hotel was Bahia Principe Gran Tulum, a magnificent luxury accommodation recently refurbished and located halfway between Playa del Carmen and Tulum in a large complex with three other superb beachside hotels, and with its own golf club, which actually has two courses: an 18-hole course and another spectacular nine-hole layout. The PGA Riviera Maya surprised the Spanish “expedition” in a positive way, both for the design by Robert T. Jones Jr. and for its maintenance. Playa Paraíso Golf Club, de la cadena hotelera Iberostar, a menos de una hora de Cancún, fue diseñado por Paul Burke (P.B.) Dye en un emplazamiento increíble, e hizo de este recorrido una de sus mejores creaciones. Este fantástico campo cuenta con hoyos memorables. Sus majestuosos fairways ondulados (una de sus características), sus bunkers profundos de fina arena, sus múltiples tees de salidas y sus greens ingeniosamente abombados y perfectos lo convierten en un estimulante reto para el golfista. Nadie sale de ahí indiferente. Es un campo que se queda en la memoria y en la retina del jugador por su increíble belleza, perfección y dificultad. ¿Qué decir de El Camaleón Mayakoba? Everyone leaves the course impressed. It is a course that remains for a long time in the memory – and retinas – of players thanks to its incredible beauty, perfection and level of difficulty. And what to say about El Camaleón Mayakoba? It is probably one of the best-known courses in the world. Located next to the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, festooned by canals and lagoons of crystalline waters that border most of its fairways, sheltered by a tropical jungle and mangroves, this majestic course is considered one of the most beautiful on the planet. It was designed by one of the finest golfers of all time, Greg Norman, the “Great White Shark”, and it was the first course to host a U.S. PGA Tour

tournament outside the United States and Canada. Located 30 minutes south of Cancún and just 15 minutes from Playa del Carmen, the course runs through three distinctive environments: tropical jungle, dense mangrove and sandy areas on the seashore. As at PGA Riviera Maya, the design incorporates a cenote in the heart of one of its fairways. co de este año, se fue de excursión a visitar las ruinas mayas de Cobá y bañarse en uno de los miles de cenotes que hay en la zona. Y como no podía ser de otra forma, tras una intensa mañana “cultural”, se remató la jornada con una espléndida comida típica mexicana en la Casa de los Gorditos. Puro ambiente y sabores maya que todos disfrutaron y recordarán. A los que nunca habían viajado a la zona les impresionó sobre todo la gran belleza de los cenotes, algo único en el mundo, y la majestuosidad e historia de las ruinas mayas de Tulúm, Cobá y sobre todo Chichen Itza, una de las zonas arqueológicas mejor conservada, que también fueron visitadas por el grupo a lo largo de la semana. Desde Andalucía Golf/España Golf queremos agradecer muchísimo la excelente acogida y recibimiento que nos dispensó Bahía Príncipe Riviera Maya Resort, que forma parte de una de las cadenas hoteleras de referencia en el Caribe,

Those who had never travelled to the area before were especially impressed by the great beauty of the cenotes, which are unique in the world, and the majesty and history of the Mayan ruins of Tulum, Coba and (in particular) Chichen Itza, one of the best preserved archaeological sites. El acto, que se desarrolló en dos de las ubicaciones más destacadas de Sotogrande: La Reserva Club Sotogrande y The Beach, fue conducido por el reconocido economista Carlos Rodríguez Braun, que destacó en un breve discurso introductorio cómo, desde su creación, “Sotogrande se ha convertido en un lugar único gracias a una visión de futuro que ha sido clave para su éxito y progreso” e incidió en su “capacidad y flexibilidad para adaptarse al cambio y al crecimiento. Y ha crecido mucho y bien en todo este tiempo. Ha crecido en población, en infraestructuras, servicios, educación, deporte y en calidad de vida”. RESPALDO DE LA JUNTA DE ANDALUCÍA Por su parte, La delegada del Gobierno de la Junta de Andalucía, Mercedes Colombo, a la que le une un estrecho vínculo familiar con la zona, resaltó en su discurso cómo Sotogrande ha crecido “hasta convertirse en uno de los primeros destinos residenciales de Andalucía”. The celebratory event, which took place in two of Sotogrande’s most prominent locations – La Reserva Club Sotogrande and The Beach – was conducted by renowned economist Carlos Rodriguez Braun, who in a brief introductory speech highlighted how, since its inception, “Sotogrande has become an exceptional place thanks to a vision of the future that has been key to its success and progress”. He also stressed its “ability and flexibility to adapt to change and growth. And it has grown a great deal and well in all this time. It has grown in population, infrastructure, services, education, sports and quality of life.” SUPPORT FROM THE JUNTA DE ANDALUCÍA The delegate for the Junta de Andalucía (regional government), Mercedes Colombo, who has close family ties with the area, highlighted in her speech how Sotogrande had grown “to become one of the premier residential destinations in Andalucía”. l pionero de este tipo de embarcación es el Evo R6 Open, de la marca italiana Evo Yatchs, que además de extender sus ‘alas’ a babor y estribor, se encargó de proyectar su plataforma de popa para elevarla hasta el pantalán o descenderla hasta el nivel del agua. Estas prolongaciones crean un perfil único de este estilizado yate de 18 metros de eslora diseñado por Valerio Rivellini, que lo ha convertido en el barco estrella de la firma transalpina nacida hace ocho años. El nuevo yate a motor de 18 metros es la versión abierta del Evo R6, el exitoso buque insignia de R Line del que hereda el diseño elegante y los espacios flexibles. A retractable bimini provides shade for the pilot seat and the forward section of the cockpit, which is fitted out with an expansive dining area and illuminated at night by courtesy lights on the roll-bar, in an evocative play of light. This outdoor area is complemented by a spacious forward sunbathing area with facing bow seating, a sunpad island in the beach lounge and a modular swim platform in the stern, with multiple uses. As with all the other models in the Evo Yachts range, the beach lounge area is the boat’s stand-out feature, not least because of the signature “XTension” bulwarks system, which opens out sideways in a matter of seconds to increase the available space by 40 per cent. La estética de este Rolls Royce, de dos plazas, 5,3 metros de largo y 2 de ancho, introduce novedades en las que han venido siendo las líneas maestras y distintivas de la marca: faros alargados y estrechos, nueva parrilla, alerón en la zaga, carrocería de aluminio, acero y fibra de carbono… Con su techo rígido extraíble, La Rose Noire se puede disfrutar como un coupé o como un roadster. Sus puertas se abren en sentido contrario al habitual. El habitáculo destaca por la calidad de la piel de la

The model’s name, La Rose Noire, refers to the Black Baccara rose, whose dark red petals are velvety. Fascinatingly, the car can look like a black rose depending on how the light falls on it. The duotone pearlescent paint is the result of five layers of lacquer, each with a subtle variation of red. It took 150 trials in the painting process to achieve the desired shade. This was achieved with an electric locking mechanism that gently presents the watch at the touch of a button. The car’s sybaritism is also amply evident in a customised champagne chest. At the push of a button, the chest opens to reveal an intricate champagne set filled with hand-blown crystal flutes.
