THE MANAGER
Good evening and welcome back to Foxcotte Park for tonight’s Sydenhams Wessex League One fixture against Whitchurch United. I’ll start by welcoming Glyn Cherrett, his staff and players and supporters who have made the short journey tonight. The Jam Boys have started to find their form with victory over New Milton Town in the League Cup and also victory on Saturday against a struggling Downton side. Our last home game was a disappointing result for all concerned. Despite the great start we made by going a goal up through Danny Urry. Alton equaliser was a “worldie” which no keeper would have stopped. The second half response to going behind was again great to see but we defended poorly on a couple of occasions that cost us the points.
We deservedly dly went in front when Lockey followed up Kingey’ss excellent header to score a simple tap in and we went close to adding to that on a number of occasions. Fawley rarely troubled us but we failed to see the game out and ultimately we got punished in injury time. It certainly was a miserable afternoon as it felt like a defeat with how late they scored and also the weather conditions certainly made it an afternoon to forget. I take full responsibility for the results, I care about every player at the club, plus I care about getting it right on and off the pitch. We win, lose and draw as a team and we keep going until we get it right! We will continue to focus on the next game and take it one game at a time. I’m confident we will start to pick up points and put this slight blip behind us. Enjoy tonight’s game and please get behind your team as you always do. That support is vital in helping us close that gap to the teams above us. Up the Street!
Last Saturday’s match at Fawley was certainly a game of two halves. We contained the Oilers for the first 45 minutes against a strong wind and then totally dominated the second period of the game.

THE BOARDROOM
JOHN WARD Good evening everyone and a warm welcome to tonight’s game against near neighbours Whitchurch United. These are first notes for a while and although the results and performances haven’t reached the expected levels as yet I’m confident that Danny and Jamie can get us moving in the right direction. It’s important that we start to pick up points so the gap between ourselves and the top four doesn’t become impossible to overturn. Laverstoke & Ford have made an impressive start to the season as have Folland Sports but there is already a massive gap between those two teams. The first half performance wasn’t the greatest but we certainly improved in the second half and it was very frustrating to come back with only a point after dominating the game and restricting Fawley to few opportunities in the second half.
We e welcome two new players to the club that both made their first team debuts on Saturday. Alfie Moulding produced a strong display at centre back last Saturday and also Cameron Rohart-Brown, Rohart who has joined us from Hartley Wintney and played really well so nearly marked his debut with a goal from two free-kicks. kicks. I must also mention how well both the swifts and Ladies sides are doing this season. The Swifts,, whose game on Saturday was postponed postpone due to the weather, are currently second in their division behind Moneyfields Reserves. Reserves The newly formed ladies side continue to gain experience and after a couple of fine wins have come up against two strong sides from Portsmouth in recent weeks in league and cup. I’m m sure they are learning from the experience and willll continue to improve as the season progresses. After tonight’s ’s match, the first team travel to Verwood Town next Saturday and then have a re-arranged arranged fixture against Romsey Town here at Foxcotte Park on Tuesday 3rd November ber with a 7.45pm kick-off. kick Enjoy tonight’s ’s game and I hope to see once again soon.

COACHES CORNER
JAMIE COLEMAN Good afternoon and welcome to our first home game of the season. These are my first programme notes for the new season and both myself and JC will look to give you insight from the coach’s perspective this season. Having been out of the game for a few years I was tempted back into football by the club’s structure, ambition and passion for playing football the right way. Joining a management team with a wealth of Wessex League and local football experience was a no brainier for me, their vision to develop the players at the club through quality coaching session’s fits perfectly with my coaching philosophy. Working with Jamie and Thomo on the training ground, we are bringing in professional practices to take the club to the next level, this includes performance analysis thanks to VEO (video footage), psychological techniques and player plans to improve game day performance and player confidence.
I was tempted back into football by the club’s structure, ambition and passion for playing football the right way.
It has been one of the strangest prepre seasons I have ever run, training in small socially distanced bubbles with no contact play definitely posed a challenge for the coaching staff and club. The players adapted well and committed fully to the challenging situation. We focused on the technical side of the game and the quality of our ball work and movement movemen until a relax in government rules allowed contact play. The managers put in place an extremely challenging pre-season season fixture list which tested the squad physically and mentally, putting them in great shape for the season start on the 5th. We have a great at squad at the club that are all keen to learn and improve, and a very strong Swifts squad with a few youngsters knocking at the door of the first team. Our focus now switches to the Wessex Division One campaign and making sure we start in the right way. An excellent 2 nil win away at Newport in our opener is just reward for everyone's efforts during preseason. We are hoping to build some momentum and get into that winning habit against Petersfield, they will obviously be looking to bounce back from their opening day defeat so we are anticipating a highly competitive game.

STEVE HARVEY The League is saddened to hear of the death of the Hamworthy United’s Steve Harvey. His interest in football probably began with his Dad and Grandad who used to run a local team called St Hellier Athletic. It is not known if Steve actually played for his Dad’s side, or not in his playing days. He also became and still is an A.F.C.Wimbledon Supporter, yes there are some.
The Hammers did try to get him to join the Club, but at that stage he was not ready to do so, but he did later accept an offer to become a Director of Poole Town FC. He then joined HUFC as Chairman for a while and then went to Wimbone Town as a Director.
Steve soon got involved in the local football after moving down to Dorset. He then went on to manage Corfe Mullen F.C in the Dorset Saturday League playing on a piece of ground owned by the Wessex Water Company which he turned into a football pitch.
Steve returned to Hamworthy United when it was going through a very tough period due to several members of the Committee having retired, or had left the Club. It was in serious danger of folding through lack of volunteers. He steadied the ship and together with the then President David Manuel threw himself into the planning and building of the new clubhouse. However, Steve not only oversaw the building of it, but spent hours doing a lot of the work himself.
Almost single handed he maintained the pitch as well as running the team. After a while this became too much, and so they returned to playing at the Rec. Steve went on to manage Lytchett Red Triangle and Bournemouth Sports before deciding to quit managing.
Steve had a clear vision of where he wanted to take the Club, but had to resign due to his fatal condition. There is no doubt without Steve Harvey’s hard work and drive, Hamworthy United would be all the poorer, making him a True Hamworthy Legend.
LEAGUE ROUND-UP Chris Hicks has been appointed as Assistant Manager at Bemerton Heath Harlequins moving along from the Bypass Ground, where he had been involved with the Romsey Town Development team. Brendan Holmes marked his 100th appearance for Andover Town with a goal in their 4-1 midweek win over Whitchurch United, talking of milestones, Mike Byrne has completed 150 appearances for Hamble Club. Former Baffins Milton Rovers Manager Steve Leigh has joined Horndean in the capacity of First Team Coach. WORD ON THE STREET | ANDOVER NEW STREET V WHITCHURCH UNITED | 27.10.20

An optimistic start to the 2017-18 season with a home win against newly relegated Alton, thanks to early goals from Gunner Yates and Callum Sweeney, Alton pulled a goal back and the Street were forced to hold on when Jamie Pollard was sent off.
The Street would go on to have an excellent season and would be firmly in the promotion mix throughout the season. Dreams of actually winning the league looked to becoming a reality when both Tadley Calleva and Christchurch were beaten at Foxcotte Park by a single goal in both games. An excellent 4-1 win at Verwood Town put the Street on the verge of promotion and then a 5-0 victory at Totton & Eling secured promotion and also put the Street top of the table.
The next match was again at home against another relegated side, Fawley AFC were the visitors and looked to have grinded out a draw until Zach Neve popped up in the last minute to snatch all three points for the Street.
The match wasn’t a classic but a hard fought encounter with Yeomans scoring for the Jam Boys before Shane Lock responded for the Street in the 43rd minute.
Downton were next to come to Foxcotte Park and a late penalty ensured the points went back to Wiltshire.
A tough home match against AFC Stoneham was next but a 4-0 defeat put a dampener on the promotion party and meant that the Street needed to win against Whitchurch in their final match and hope that Christchurch slipped up at Hythe & Dibden.
The second half would see Casson spencer put through his own net to give Whitchurch the lead once again and then shortly after he would receive a red card. The Jam Boys would comfortably see out the game and it was not the season end to the league the Street hoped for but second place and promotion was secure and further success in the North Hants Senior Cup was achieved at Longmeadow in a penalty shootout victory over Tadley Calleva.

ALLY McCRACKEN
CENTRE
SPOT Youngster Ally McCracken has broken into the First Team from the Swifts this summer. summer The 22-year-old former Stockbridge player is the latest from the Street to be put on The Centre Spot... Spot >>> What’s your favourite position – centre-mid, attacking-mid or up front? And why? Either attacking mid or out wide so I can get the ball in areas where I can make a difference. Getting forward and getting the opposition going backwards. I like running with the ball, taking people on, trying to get goals, trying to get assists. Defensive work obviously you’ve got to do, but no one really likes defensive work! How has it been waiting for your chance to get into the first team? Do you do anything proactive to get the attention of the manager? I didn’t expect it if I’m honest but it has always been the goal since I came to the club, just kept my head down in pre season and was myself, will just continue to do that now and hopefully help the team whenever I can, I’m buzzing to be a part of it. 34
@AndoverNSfc |
Do you like roast dinners and gravy? Who doesn’t? Sunday’s aren’t the same without one. Favourite away ground played at? That’s a tough one as I like a few of the grounds I’ve played at but I’d have to go with Beatrice Avenue on the Isle of Wight after the first game of the season against Newport IOW. Describe your emotions before during and after the Newport IOW game? I was as actually a little bit nervous before this game as I knew the night before that I was starting. I soon oon calmed down as soon as the game started but getting the goal so early on helped a lot. It wasn’t asn’t ideal going down to 10 but I felt like we were w always on top and just had to grind it out. All the lads were buzzing afterwards, we all put in a proper shift and it couldn’t have been a better debut for myself and more importantly coming home with the 3 points.

What is your favourite TV programme?
no.10 I’ve seen in terms of playing between the lines and he had really quick feet. Reminds me a lot of Bruno Fernandes for Utd.
Power on Netflix, unreal watch If you could live in one movie, show, game or book what would you live in and why? Wolf of Wall Street. If you’ve seen it, you’ll know why. Who do you think is the best football player of all time? Lionel Messi. Which player in the current squad could play in the Southern League and why? Danny Urry. The lad has got a bit, would hate to play against him. Team bonding in a karaoke bar... you have to do a duet...what song would you pick and who would you sing it with? I’d have to get Kinge involved and go for Hero by Enrique Iglesias. His initiation song was different class.

GETTING INVOLVED IN THE SET PIECES...
>>> What do you consider the best goal you’ve ever scored? I would have to say that it was against Moneyfields at home on my debut for Swifts. We lost the game 5-2 2 but it’s always nice to score on your debut! Who would you say you have the most chemistry on the pitch? That’s a hard ard one to answer because I’ve only nly played a few games. games Who is the bestt player you have played with? And why? That’s another hard question to answer. Probably have to say Adam Bourner, he can play with both feet and can do it all. Who is the best player you have played against? And why? Callum Slattery, nobody could get near him for 90 minutes. He went on to make it as a pro.

MY STREET
THIS SEASON WE ARE ASKING FOR SUPPORTERS TO GO DOWN MEMORY LANE AND ANSWER A SELECTION OF QUESTIONS BASED ON THEIR TIME FOLLOWING THE STREET. MARTIN TOBIN SHARES HIS VIEWS AND SELECTS HIS ALL TIME FAVOURITE STREET XI TO TAKE ON THE BEST!
Name: Martin Tobin Age: 59 Where do you watch games from: Mainly from behind the goal, but sometimes from the main stand. First game: The first game I watched would have been up at London Road, it was a long time ago. They didn’t have their own ground or clubhouse like we have now. They would play on pitch number 2 and Mick O’Connor was manager at the time.
The worst match: The worst match for me was the game against Cowes I mentioned earlier. It was freezing cold day and it was touch and go with the pitch conditions. The atmosphere was very poor, nobody wanted to play, even the referee wasn’t very keen but the game went ahead and there wasn’t much football and a lot of arguments going on during and after the game. game
First memory: Playing for the Street and going to East Cowes on a cold early January game in the Hampshire League, which we won 1-0 but nobody wanted to play as it was so cold!
Best Individual performance by a player: Best performance I’ve seen was by Dave Bird. He was a towering centre half at New Street. He was captain ptain of the team and he was the master and just superb and drive the team really well. He would always give 110 %. He was Mr New Street at the time but it would be close between him and Dave Selby, who was as hard as nails in the midfield.
Best goal seen: The best goal for me was Ily Warshow’s winner in the North Hants Cup final a couple of years ago against Alresford Town at the Camrose Basingtoke. There was good build up to that goal and young Ily took the goal well.
Favourite Street kit: The home green and black stripes. I love all the green and black kits. Although its important from a financial point of view to have a sponsor, for as long as the kit is green and black then thats the most important thing to me. .
Best match witnessed: It would have to be my last game for New Street A. Nick Richmond was manager of the side. I think I was about 35 or 36. I was playing at the back and we were underdogs against Wallop. We won the game 2-1, we found out the Wallop side had booked the following day off work so they could celebrate that night. It never happened as we beat them and we played tremendously well and with so much spirit and character. We were fortunate on a few occasions but we deserved that as the team were absolutely brilliant. That will always stick in my memory as it was my final appearance in the green and black.
Favourite All-Time Time Player: That a tough one to answer but I’d have to go for Dave Selby. Selby Again his attitude was top class and he wanted to win. He gave you everything he had when he stepped over that white line onto the pitch. To me, he would always be first on the team am sheet. I could name a few others including Dave Bird, Steve Brown, Dave Murphy and Sean Rodgers. I love New Street because... because it’s provided me with the opportunity, and ambition to be involved with a great club that’s moving in the right direction. It has a fantastic set of people working within the club and its helping move the club forward.

MARTIN’S ALL TIME NEW STREET XI: GK: IAN BARTON
RW: ALAN KENNEDY
RB: DANNY FIELD
CM: DAVE MURPHY
Always reliable, fantastic goalkeeper. Great shot stopper. He had great hands and unbelievable distribution. Was a great organiser of the defence and talker in the side.
I like Danny Field, I think he’s brilliant. He’s reliable. Comfortable on the ball and very good with his distribution. Again he’s a talkative player. He doesn’t waste passes and is a great tackler.
Class player, very good on the ball. Had loads of energy. Provided and created chances for the sides he played for. And he could also score goals by cutting in from the right wing.
I grew up with Dave and played football with him. Very commanding and very good on the ball. He was solid, He was the midfield general in any side he played for.
CM: DAVE SELBY
As I’ve said he was my favourite all time player I can’t really leave him out can i? His attitude during the game was exceptional and that desire to win would make him instrumental to my dream team!
LM: GUNNER YATES
RIGHT BACK | DANNY FIELD
LB: PAUL REIDY
Brilliant on the ball, great distribution and hardly gave the ball away. He was a clever player and worked hard for the team.
CB: STEVE BROWN (C)
Top quality centre back. Outstanding when he played for the club. Would dominate a game and is a great player, especially when you consider the difficult times the side had when he played.
CB: DAVE BIRD
As I mentioned earlier, he was a towering centre back and formed an excellent partnership with Steve Brown. Hardly anything would get past those two on the pitch.. An excellent captain and his leadership skills were second to none. I wouldn’t give him the title of “Mr New Street” for nothing!
I like Gunner. I think Gunner on his day is the best I’ve ever seen in that position posit and in this league. Ability wise he is unbelievable and if he comes on he can change hange a game and certainly influence a match with his wing play and ability to take a man on.
ST: SEAN ROGERS
Big, strong lad. He was excellent in the air and could hold the ball up really well. He would score goals for fun and he’s an excellent striker.
ST: VINNIE RUSHER
Vinnie had that ability to destroy defenders. He could take defenders on and fantastic ability to cross the ball. He’s shooting skills were also exceptional onal and would always hit the target.
MANAGER: MICK O’CONNOR
Great manager, he was really good with the players.. He knew football and had been around the game for a long time and at the top level. He always treated the players with respect but also let them know what he expected from them at the same time. He was never afraid of talking to players in the right manner. A very nice guy as well.

STORY OF THE MATCH The Street were defeated at home against a strong Alton side 4-2, ten days ago despite taking an early lead. Danny Urry was adjudged to have been fouled when he was shaping up to shoot, just ten minutes into the first half. Urry took the spot kick and sent Alton keeper Kieron Greene the wrong way. Before that the Street were dealt a blow when captain Matt Scott went off injured in the 7th minute and was replaced by Kai Sterne, with Max Allen dropping back into defence and Scott Kinge moving back into central midfield. Alton equalised through right winger Luke Perkins who hit an unstoppable effort across the goal and in off the far post. The Brewers took the lead just four minutes after halftime when Liam Knight scored. But the Street immediately got back on level terms through Brett Denham. Alton re-took the lead in the 62nd minute through Scott Sandersen and the same player made it 4-2 when he met a high cross from Perkins to head past Sean O’Brien to secure the points for the Brewers.

STORY OF THE MATCH The Street suffered heartbreak when a dramatic injury time equaliser from Fawley denied the Street taking home all three points after dominating the second half. The first half was fairly uneventful with few opportunities at either end. Mikey Davis having the Streets best opportunity when he broke free on the left but fired wired of the target. The second half started in the pouring rain but the Street took the lead five minutes into the second half when Scott Kinge rose highest to head towards goal, only to see his effort pushed away by the Fawley keeper, straight into Shane Lock’s path for him to score into the empty net. The Street went onto to create a hatful for chances but couldn’t get the second goal to secure the win, despite hitting the woodwork and new signing Cameron Rohart-Brown going close with two freekicks. Fawley offered very little threat in the second half until in injury time they forced a corner and with their keeper up in the box the ball found its way into the bottom corner and the points shared on a miserable afternoon.

THE CLINIC
PETE TUNNEY Good afternoon and welcome to today’s match against Alton. From time to time I will look at different types of injuries that can occur on the football pitch and how best to treat and recover from them. This week I’m looking at OsgoodSchlatter’s Disease. This is a condition where the attachment of the patella tendon to the tibia becomes inflamed. The tendon attachment is situated over a growth plate of the tibia. Excessive use of the quadriceps muscles will stress the tendon attachment and growth plate, producing inflammation. The cause is likely to be over use, and is most common in active boys aged between 10 and 16. Generally this condition does not occur after growth ceases.
Symptoms Pain during and after activity at the tendon attachment. Local swelling and tenderness. Treatment Rest. This will allow inflammation and pain to settle. Modified activity – avoid movements which reproduce pain. Ice. Apply ice for 10 – 15 minutes every two hours. Stretch. Begin stretching exercises to increase the length of the quadriceps muscles. These should be performed regularly and within the pain-free pain range of movement. To perform this stretch, balance on the unaffected leg, pulling the heel of your other leg towards tour bottom. Keep ep your knees close together and your hips pushed forwards. Hold the stretch for the 30 seconds and repeat five times. Returning to activity should be a gradual process. This condition generally heals spontaneously, but problems can recur if the tendon is stressed further. Enjoy the game.

LEAGUE LOOK THE LATEST IN SYDENHAMS WESSEX LEAGUE In the bread and butter world of the Premier Division, the much anticipated game between Lymington and Fareham was disappointingly a late call off due to covid-19 issues in the home camp, where perhaps more notice could have been given. Moving on to games played now, and we’ll start in the top flight. The northern outpost of Calthorpe Park saw a 4-1 away win for Hamworthy United, with Cameron Munn leading the way with a hat trick for the Hammers. Dan Cann also found himself on the scoresheet for the third time this week, in a win that sees the Hammers hit top spot with Fareham inactive. Taylor Watts notched a late consolation strike for Fleet. At our other northerly club, it was honours even between Tadley Calleva and Portland United. Ryan McKechnie leveled the contest for the visitors after a long trip, Josh Drew having put the hosts ahead. On the south coast we head to Portsmouth, where Baffins Milton Rovers netted three without reply against Bournemouth. All goals here came in the second half with Josh Warren, Tommy Scutt and Blu Boam finding the target. Whilst on that area, Brockenhurst won by the odd goal of three at AFC Portchester in front of the biggest gate of the day, 240. Brad Magookin hitting a double- one in each half for the Badgers, whilst Barry Mason was the Portchester marksman. On the artificial surface at Stoneham Lane, it was a 6-0 win for AFC Stoneham against Bashley, with Duarte Martins and Nathan Clements both bagging braces for the
Purples. Scott Hills set the ball rolling with a 19th minute penalty and Will ill Wiseman was also on target. Christchurch got back to winning winnin ways with a 3-1 1 win coming at Hamble Club. Max Wilcock, Kyle Graham and Ash Pope with the goals. New boy Mitch Byrne for the Monks with an added time strike in the first half. The final game in the Premier was on the Waterside where 78 witnessed Blackfield ld & Langley hit four without reply against Alresford. Connal Morrison hit a double for the hosts after River Smith had given them the lead, with Dom Panesar-Dower Panesar also on the scoresheet. In Division One, the game at Ringwood was abandoned after around an hour, with torrential torr rain the cause. Bemerton were 1-0 1 up through a 22nd minute strike from Kane O’Keefe. Nearby New Milton Town went down 3-1 3 at home against Folland Sports, with Chris Long on target ta for the Linnets and Matt Casey, Clayd Roach and James Thomson for the Planemakers. Another host team on the losing list saw Downton defeated by Whitchurch 3-2. 3 Matt Palmer and Ben Smith for the Robins with George Bishop, from the penalty spot, Harry Edmondson dmondson and Joe Western getting the points for the Jamboys. Petersfield Town also enjoyed a win by the same score at Totton & Eling, Bailey Newbury with a hat trick for the Rams. Danny Clarke and James Matthews with the goals for the Millers. Honours even at Andover Town against Hythe & Dibden. Town went ahead through Ben Emans before Mig Dark earned the visitors a point. It was also one apiece at Fawley where a late Declan Hartigan goal earned the oilers a point against Andover New Street who led from a Shane S Lock strike early in the second half. Alton grabbed the points in a 1-0 1 win over Romsey Town with Matt Graham getting the goal towards the end of the first half, the gate of 161 being the best of the bunch in Division One. Laverstock & Ford maintained a ten point lead at the top of the Division with a 4-0 0 win over East Cowes Vics. The scorers seem somewhat familiar now, namely Jake Rawkins, Chae Sykes and Russell Jones (2). Lastly for the weekend and the only game on the Isle of Wight was at Beatrice Avenue, A where United Services Portsmouth beat Newport 3-0. 3 Dec Seiden, Tyler Moret and Tom Cain earning the visitors the points.

SWIFTS UPDATE The Swifts found themselves in cup action on Wednesday night against South Wonston with the Foxcotte Park pitch looking like a carpet and with the added drizzle creating a real zip. The home side started with a bang, with Charlie Rodgers playing in a more advanced role, curling a beautiful shot past the keeper. 1 then became 2 when Liam Dufall spectacular effort cannoned in off the post. The home side looked comfortable during the first half, creating chances and looking the more likely to add to the score sheet with Ryan Morgans & Marcus Tyler both came close. The away side started the second half quickly with a well taken finish to set up what would a thrilling second half. The away side stayed on the front foot and looked to try and break down the strong and resolute Swifts defence. The Swifts then restored the 2 goal lead with Liam Dufall’s second of the night, with a strong drive into the corner of the goal! The away side with nothing to lose threw everything they had at the
Swifts defence and finally bundled in their second of the evening, making the score line 3-2 2 with not long left on the clock. Callum Buck stole the ball in the middle of the park with a strong tackle and started to run at the South Wonston back line, jinking past one and creating space outside the box to unleash the goal of the game, with the ball flying into the roof of net. Absolute rocket. With not long left and the score line at 4-2, 2, you would have thought that would be done and dusted. There was still some late drama to come with The Swifts conceding a penaltyy which was slotted away with keeper Mike Horne unlucky not to save. The game ended 4-3 4 with a dramatic night up at the Foxcotte and the t Swifts into the next round of the cup. The Swifts faced Wednesday opponents South Wonston on Saturday, Saturday looking to make it another victory and 3 points towards the promotion push. It didn’t take long for The Swifts to carry on from there Wednesday night with the home sides first touch of the ball, was picking the ball out their own net as Harry Lawton finished from a superb b cross from in-form in winger Liam Duffal. The he game then settled down with the t Swifts controlling most of the play and creating chances. The home side looked dangerous on the break causing a few nervous moments at the back. The Swifts contributed to press and probe but couldn’t find the important second goal. Similarly to the first half, The Swifts created a number of good chances in the second half but failed to convert but always looked comfortable and in control of the game. The Swifts saw the game out with a clean sheet and 3 points on the road.

NEW STREET
LADIES ANDOVER NEW STREET 2 PORTSMOUTH DEVELOPMENT 5
STREET LADIES SUFFER FIRST DEFEAT OF THE SEASON AGAINST STRONG POMPEY SIDE Street ladies were left to rue a below par performance in the first half as they suffered their first defeat of the season last Sunday. After last week’s postponed game against Cowes due to a waterlogged pitch, the Street looked off the pace in the opening half against a strong Portsmouth side. Pompey were keeping possession much better than New Street and were exploiting the space on the pitch and using the ball effectively. It wasn’t long before they made it 1-0 when they were able to break through down the right hand side to score. The second goal was not long in coming as Portsmouth played a ball through the middle of the pitch and were quickly through to score and give the Street a mountain to climb.
Further goals followed before half-time half and the Street were relieved to hear the halfhalf time whistle so they could regroup at 4-0 down at the break. The second half was a complete turnaround with the Street competing against their opponents and winning the ball higher up the pitch. Nikki Barnes was pushed up front and responded with a goal that further lifted the Street. Barnes was on target again from a corner shortly later and an unlikely comeback was suddenly on. This however was denied when Portsmouth broke on the left hand side and scored to make it 5-2. 5 The Street continued to match their opponents for the remainder of the game but unable to reduce the deficit further. Manager Kyla Tobin said after the game; “We We showed great character in the second half as we didn’t compete in the first half. We did start with a different formation and maybe we shouldn’t have tried that today, but we were excellent second half. Kate Probert was outstanding in midfield, constantly winning the ball for us and making us tick in the second half.”

WHO?
HAVEN’T WE MET BEFORE?
Now in their 4th season in the Wessex One after relegation from the Premier Division in 2017. After a number of seasons prior to that finishing around the mid-table places in the Wessex Premier, the 2016-17 season finally saw them finish in 22nd position and relegated. There was no instant return for the Potters as they have finished in 17th and 8th the following seasons. 2019-20 saw the Potters struggle for consistency and were 12th when the season was abandoned.
The last time we faced the Potters was back in August last year in an early league encounter.
2020-21 SEASON SO FAR... The Potters put an early home defeat to Hythe & Dibden (2-1) behind them and took a point against Newport IOW. Progression in both League Cup and FA Vase were secured with wins over Petersfield Town and Hythe & Dibden. A 5-3 defeat in the return game against Newport IOW then saw Verwood propel themselves into 7th place with wins at Romsey Town and Fawley. A 1-1 draw at New Milton was bettered with a 2-1 win against Downton. 68
A match attendance of 84 witnessed the Street take an early lead through Luke Hooper in the 19th minute. Chances at both ends followed with both keepers making some good saves. It was left for substitute Ilyas Warshow to secure the victory for the Street in the 86th 86 minute.
STADIUM – POTTERNE PARK The ground is enclosed with a covered seated stand on one side of the ground and there is also a covered terrace with open air standing around the rest of the ground. ground

THE LAST WORD BY MATT BADCOCK – EDITOR AT THE NON LEAGUE PAPER What’s the best goal you’ve seen live? Not necessarily your favourite or one that meant the most, saw your club win something or, dare I say it, avoid relegation. But the best. Football is subjective. One person’s best goal might not be to the taste of another’s. Some prefer mazy runs. Others think there’s nothing better than a long range strike that crashes in off the underside of the bar. We’re fortunate we get to see more NonLeague goals than we ever did. Now wonder strikes from across the country are only a few clicks away, be it on the club’s website, YouTube channel or social media. Often we will see a goal just moments after the game has finished. It used to be waiting to buy the end of season club video to re-live those moments that could have occurred months earlier. Was it quite as good as you remembered? Was it really that far out? Did the keeper really have no chance? One that will always live long in my memory was a strike by Michael Warner for Farnborough Town against Heybridge Swifts. A headed clearance fell out of the sky to customary cries of ‘SHOOT!’ Often the instruction to take aim is swiftly followed by groans as the 70
ball sails off target, troubling parked vehicles in the car park more than the goalkeeper. But this day, Warner’s effort was a dream. Like a tracer missile the ball rocketed into the top corner. Two goalkeepers wouldn’t have saved it. It was brilliant. These days it would have gone ‘viral’ and been retweeted thousands of times on twitter. Technology has certainly made our annual Goal of the Season at The NLP’s National Game Awards more competitive than ever. More and more nominations roll in each year, all worthy winners from all different levels of the game. In years gone by, these goals would be the stuff of myth and legend. Now the tangible proof is there. I was fortunate enough to be at the National League North Eliminator game between Brackley Town and Gateshead a few months ago. Fans weren’t allowed in the grounds. That was a shame for loyal supporters as it is but even more so when Shane Byrne pulled a spectacular rabbit out of the hat on the stroke of half-time. half Gateshead had just gone one up deep in first-half half stoppage time and looked for all the world to be heading into the break in front. But Byrne, apparently, had other ideas. Receiving the ball from kick-off kick inside his own half, the midfielder hit an inch perfect ball that flew right into the top corner. Gateshead keeper Brad James had no chance. It wasn’t like he’d been caught caugh unawares not concentrating. It left the handful of people inside the ground open-mouthed. mouthed. A wow moment. The only problem for me being, I didn’t fully see it. I was taking notes down from the first goal. Who shoots direct from kick-off!? kick I saw it in the air from a long way out, I saw it arrow into the net. I saw 80 per cent of it. But I didn’t see the actual strike itself. So does it count as my best goal witnessed live? It’s certainly the best one I nearly saw!
