PROJECT INTENTIONS
The Cape Town Waterfront, as one of the most visited places in South Africa, accommodates different programs, mostly dedicated to leisure. Even with its great diversity in the area it covers, there are some parts of the Waterfront that are not interconnected with each other. The “Waterfront Bridge attempts to literally close the gap and generate a continuous circulation around the main commercial area. It not only works as a crossing point, but also provides an open and flexible structure to be occupied depending on the needs of the city. The project aims to add an extra possibility of use to the waterfront, to increase the variety of activities that take place in it and to provide the residents and visitors of Cape Town a new point of view of its landscape and city life.
PROJECT BRIEF
Initially the “Waterfront Bridge is a structure composed of platforms at different levels that connects the main commercial area of the Water Front with the docks around it. Its main function is to provide a way of crossing from one side to the other, creating a continuous commercial corridor. However, in order to cross, the user must go through a series of ramps, and discover at different levels, several activities that can occur in the platforms. There are open spaces for markets, performances, games or just observation and closed volumes for workshops, conferences, offices, etc. Since the platforms have a half level difference between each other, one can be in one platform and simultaneously observe what is occurring in another. This creates a diversity of environments and makes the experience of the space even richer.
BRIDGE THE GAP The “Waterfront Bridge attempts to literally close the gap between to areas and generate a continuous circulation around the main commercial area. It not only works as a crossing point, but also provides an open and flexible structure to be occupied depending on the needs of the city.
