WELCOME MESSAGES Anastasia Slepukhova Key Club International Trustee Alabama/CNH KIWIN’S/New York
Greetings KIWIN’S! My name is Anastasia Slepukhova, and I’m so excited to introduce myself as your new International Trustee. I am humbled to be able to serve you this year; KIWIN’S is truly such a unique District full of history, passion and most importantly – ohana! My job as a Trustee in addition to voting on the International Board, voicing your opinions at Board Meetings and doing committee work is to support and be a liaison for my three assigned Districts. In conjunction to serving you this year, I am also very excited to be able to work with the New York and Alabama Key Clubbers! Simply put, my job is very similar to that of your Lt.Governor, but on the international level. However as a past District officer, I can attest that the most important job is held by you – our club officers and members. You are the ones putting in countless of hours organizing fundraisers and service projects. You are the face of Key Club in your communities, and that is why Key Club International is a household name across the world. And because there is so much work that you have to do in order to have thriving clubs, it is the job of everyone else on the District Board and Key Club International to do whatever it takes in order to make your job easier and provide you with all the necessary resources. So if you ever have any questions or if there is anything I can do for you, please don’t hesitate to ask. A little about me is that I am from the Capital District; I live just outside of Washington DC where I spend much of my time geocaching and trying new cuisine. I was born in Kyrgyzstan, and upon winning a Green Card Lottery, I moved to the United States 10 years ago. I am now a senior at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Virginia, where I am very involved with my Class as an Executive Officer, Student Government and I shoot for the Varsity Air Rifle Team. I love staying active and being involved, but just like many of you, service is my calling. I am known as “That Key Club Girl” as I roll into school with my Key Club license plate, water bottle, backpack, and of course one of my countless Key Club tees. My favorite service project is called “Fantasy Flight” which is an event organized by my local Dulles Airport. We decorate a plane and a
whole terminal to look like the North Pole, we dress up as Santa’s helpers and we create a special weekend for kids that participate. On the day of the event, flight attendants are all dressed up as elves and we take kids with terminal illnesses on the plane to the North Pole, where they receive presents and meet Santa. This is one of the most heartwarming projects I annually participate in, the most rewarding part being when you see a child again the following year, knowing they survived and you did something to make their day a little brighter. I want to thank you all for all the hard work you put into serving your communities. Your altruism is what motivates me to work hard each and every single day. If you have any feedback for me, or if there are any questions that you might have, please know that I am always here for you! You can add me on social media, or you can email me at slepukhova. anastasia@gmail.com Have a terrific year of service key clubbers! Hope to see you all at DCON! Yours in Service, Anastasia Slepukhova slepukhova.anastasia@gmail.com

Mr. Ken Umbarger CNH KIWIN’S District Adminstrator Hello KIWIN’S, Welcome to the new school year. I sincerely hope you all have had an enjoyable summer vacation. I know that many of you have had a very busy summer with the many fun things that we all do this time of year: Family vacations, various summer camp programs, and sports programs have all occupied our busy schedules since the end of the last school year. I would personally like to Welcome You to our new KIWIN’S Year! First, I would like to thank all of our Club Officers and Directors, as well as your Advisers for working so hard to help plan the most exciting KIWIN’S Year your club has ever had. I know firsthand how hard our Governor, Lt. Governors, and Board Members have been working to make this the best KIWIN’S year ever. I want to thank them for all of their hard work and long hours that they have put into KIWIN’S this year. This is a very special time of year for us as we all begin a new school year. Whether you are a new freshman or a seasoned senior, I would challenge you to go up to someone you do not know and ask them to come with you to attend your next KIWIN’S service project. Then follow that up by inviting them to your next club meeting and ASK THEM TO JOIN. In addition to meeting some very interesting new friends you will be assisting in growing your club to do more service in your community and school. I want to ask each and every one of our club members and officers to do everything you can to bring a friend into our KIWIN’s Family this month. Your District Board has put a lot of effort into “Growing our District” by planning some terrific ideas for Club Rush, and both of our upcoming Fall Rallies – North and South. I am sure that you and your friends will want to attend. It is a very exciting time to meet other KIWIN’S and for all of us to show OUR CLUB SPIRIT. Again, Welcome to the new school year, and I look forward to seeing you soon at a KIWIN’S Club Meeting or Service Project, In KIWIN’S Service, Ken Umbarger District Administrator kiwinsda.ken@gmail.com

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Q: What are the main objectives of this year’s DB? A: The main objectives of District Board this year is membership growth and retention. We are also focused on connecting the members with the board and working more with the K-Family. Our Board name this year is ‘District Board at Your Service’ which embodies the purpose of being on district board-to serve the members. You can check out our goals starting on page 29 in the May Issue of Gems (the district newsletter). http://bit.ly/cnhkiwinsmaygem
Q: Why is the CNH KIWIN’S mascot a (grizzly)bear? Does it have to do with CNH Key Club being bees? A: We have different mascots because we are separate districts, even though we are located in the same regions. Q: Will the minor and major emphasis and the governor’s project ever change? A: For minor and major emphasis, that will depend on Key Club International and Kiwanis International. The Governor’s Project will depend on the future governors.

JULY 2015 GOVERNOR’S CORN Hello everyone! Welcome to a new addition to the bulletin, the Governor’s Corner! This is where I will be sharing a few updates, what I have been doing for the past month and what I will be doing in the upcoming month. A personal goal of mine is to remain as transparent as possible with all of the members as the position of Governor can be somewhat vague and difficult to grasp at times (at least I was definitely like “what does the Governor even do?” when I was a new member). So some of what I’ve done for the past month of July includes the following: •Released my Governor’s Newsletter to the presidents •Created the new Google form for the President Report Form •Went Fall Rally location scouting twice •Created the agenda, packing list, and all training materials for Summer Board •Attended the Sister District Governor Call •Scheduled an individual GovernorTrustee Call with Anastasia •Attended and presented at both the Goldstone and Jet OTC •Attended LeadCon in Indianapolis, Indiana •Attended the Project Eliminate Committee Call •Reviewed all Committee Report Forms •Completed revisions for the Policy
Manual •Held the monthly call with Executive board, Appointed board, Lieutenant Governors and All of District Board •Attended a Kiwanis DCM •Ruby Division visit •Sent out Governor Update #6-8 to the District Board •Helped choose Member, Officer, and club of the month with Awards Chair Michael Some of the things I am planning to do this following month include: •Attend Kiwanis DCON from August 13-15 •Release my Governor Newsletter •Attend Committee Calls •Review Committee Report forms •Help choose Member, Officer, and club of the month with Awards Chair Michael •Attend Governor-Trustee call •Review President Report Forms •Make calls with the presidents Besides this, I would like to update everyone on current status of our District Projects. So far, we are doing outstanding in fundraising for the Governor’s Project, Eliminate, but we are definitely lacking in fundraising for our Minor Emphasis, Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). As we approach Fall Rally, our largest fundraiser for PTP, I encourage all of you to start focusing on fundraising for this cause as well! I would also like to remind us to not forget sight of our mission: to better our homes, schools and communities by serving our communities. Just as the fun, social, and
fundraising are important, so are the service events! As servant leaders, w must keep this as our focus and striv serve more hours and create innovat service projects to better our communities. Also, as many of us begins school, w need to keep in mind our priorities a schools comes first!! Do not let yourself get too stressed out. Even though studying hard and getting go grades are very important, enjoying yourself and making memories is ver important as well because we will ne get this time back again. I would just like to end with an inspirational quote: “Follow your passion, stay true to yourself, never follow someone else’s path unless yo in the woods and you’re lost and you see a path then by all means you sho follow that.” - Ellen Degeneres Yours in Service,

MONTHLY DIVISON FEATURE Daniel Gonzalez President Downey HS Diamond Division
Diamond is really working towards making a difference in the community and helping wherever we can whether it be from helping out at our local marathon or even raising money for the Eliminate Project. Diamond has a passion to serve and a passion to lead. Schools through out Diamond Division have stayed active over the summer participating in a variety of events throughout neighboring or their own communities. Narbonne high school put together a Chipotle fundraiser. This fundraiser was open to family, friends, and the whole KIWIN’s family. A flyer was shown to the cashier, and 50% of the profits would go towards the club. It has been noted that the money “going towards the club” from the fundraiser will be donated to the Eliminate Project which was about $177. Torrance put together an eloquent bowling fundraiser at the Palos Verdes Bowling Alley
where they raised money towards their club funds through selling bowling tickets to their members. The members not only helped raise money for their club, but also bonded and had fun getting a couple strikes as well! DHS KIWIN’S worked with Telefora to make flower arrangements to give to veterans. This event was also featured on ABC 7 News. DHS KIWIN’S worked with Telefora to make flower arrangements to give to veterans. This event was also featured on ABC 7 News. On the second part of this project, KIWIN’S delivered the flower arrangements they made to Los Angeles VA Hospital and talked with the veterans to hear their stories. On July 31st, PVPHS KIWIN’S stood in front of Pavilions -- a local supermarket -- from 7:00AM to 12:00PM holding a donation drive. We asked for nicely used school supplies or even money for incoming
customers. Our goal was to reach supplies or money donation up to approximately $100. We raised a total of $163.50 overpassing our goal. Not to mention the DCM/Sports social Anthony Orejana hosted to help bond our division and raise money for ELIMINATE at the beginning of the month as well as attending the Inter-Division beach palooza in which money was also raised for the Eliminate project.

MONTHLY CLUB FEATURE Katrina Domingo President Otay Ranch Emerald Division
The summer heat didn’t stop ORHS KIWIN’S in serving the community. Throughout the month of July, members of the Emerald Division were able to fulfill many worthwhile activities that are dedicated towards the goals of CNH KIWIN’S. On July 17th, the officers of ORHS KIWIN’S organized a summer bake sale held outside of Ralph’s grocery store. Four officers donated a variety of baked goods towards the first fundraiser of the year. They sold cookies, chocolate-covered strawberries, cake batter blondies, Oreo truffles, and many more and the profits of the fundraiser went towards Fall Rally expenses subsidy. A total of $218.15 was procured from this fundraiser, proving that with teamwork and dedication, a club can
ultimately succeed in anything it pursues. Not only did ORHS KIWIN’S and Emerald Division hold a fundraiser, but also a beach clean up, potluck bonding and a July DCM! Thanks to our lieutenant governor, Danilene Prodon and the rest of the division, these events were fruitful. With each activity, the division was able to bond and know each other more, which is the key to good camaraderie throughout the year. The beach clean up was held at Imperial Beach and was attended by ORHS KIWIN’S officers. On the other hand, both ORHS and CVHS (Chula Vista HS) KIWIN’S attended the potluck bonding. In this event, the division was also able to raise money through raffle for Eliminate Project/ PTP. Lastly, otters were able to plan service
projects together during the July DCM at Heritage Park. This event was attended by ORHS, CVHS and OHS (Olympian HS) KIWIN’S. ORHS KIWIN’S along with the rest of Emerald Division accomplished a lot of things in the month of July, and we continue to participate and plan more projects, events and fundraisers dedicated towards KIWIN’S major and minor emphasis as well as the Eliminate Project.
