GREETINGS AND HELLO Anastasia Slepukhova Key Club International Trustee Alabama/CNH KIWIN’S/New York
Happy Winter CNH KIWIN’S! Wow! We have less than a month left until we celebrate the start of a New Year and challenge ourselves with New Year’s resolutions! I know mine will entail the spending more time at the gym, doing more hands-on service and trying to cut down on Cranberry Ginger Ale (I seriously cannot get enough of this stuff !) This is also a great time for your clubs and officers to evaluate the performance of your clubs and make some New Year’s resolutions. Goal setting is an important skill that distinguishes high performing clubs and makes the most successful leaders. With a good few months left under your terms, make sure to make the most out of them and use this time to make any necessary changes that are hindering your clubs from reach their full potential. After you sit down with your officers and create those goals, be sure to share them with your club, Faculty Advisor, Kiwanis Club and your school! Sharing a goal with others is one of the best ways to motivate yourself and make yourself accountable for achieving it (You can even share your goals for the new year with me!) Another important topic I want to discuss this month are the upcoming officer elections. Leaders help other leads grow, so if you know an underclassman that has the potential for leadership but is lacking the confidence; give them the gentle push they need. My Division’s Lt.Governor provided me with the encouragement to run for an office my freshman year, and although I lost, it was the best decisions I made in my high school career as it got me more involved in Key Club. However, if you have been exposed to KIWIN’S and already have a potential position in mind for what you want to run for, I encourage you to take a step back and think just once more. Ask yourself these questions: Why am I running? Do I have a vision and a strong work ethic that will bring up my club/division/district next year? Will this position challenge and grow me as a leader? Do I have the time to commit to this position and excel to its highest expectations? Have I observed and talked to someone who currently holds the position I want to run for? Do my parents/school/club support me? I don’t expect you to have a “Yes” for each of these questions, but as long as you have taken them into consideration
before you run for office, you should be set! Know that the outcomes of the elections don’t determine the kind of servant leader you are or your competency as a person. I have lost three elections within my time in Key Club, and with every loss came an abundance of new knowledge about myself, that looking back now makes me the kind of servant leader that I am. It’s okay to loose and its okay to win! Finally, I want to wish everyone an extraordinary holiday season! You have all been working so hard the past few months in serving your communities, be sure to take some time during this winter break to relax and reflect on an amazing journey you have been a part of thus far as a servant leader in this awesome organization we call Key Club. Thank you again for all that you do! Yours in Service, Anastasia Slepukhova slepukhova.anastasia@gmail.com

OS Sophia Uemura CNH KIWIN’S Goldstone LTG Hello fellow manatees, dinosaurs, turtles, gators, etc. My name is Sophia Uemura and I am the Goldstone Lieutenant Governor and the Co-chair for the Special Projects committee that plans the year Fall Rallies! I am so excited and honored to write a letter in the CNH KIWIN’S District Newsletter. Anyways, I hope you all are VERY excited for Fall Rally because it has been long and exhausting for me and the co-chair, Nicolette Cruz, planning these events! Nevertheless, I hope you are all excited to see what we have in store for you all! There are so many new elements in Fall Rally such as carnival games (that *ahem* tie in with our DCON theme), Social Media Challenge Week, and a brand new location for our Fall Rally South. I’ll let you all in on a secret about our new location (William Peak Park). At the park you can see the tallest ride from Knott’s Berry Farm: The Accelerator! Isn’t that incredibly exciting?! Honestly that sight is what first drew me into this location. Being able to see Knott’s Berry Farm from the site of Fall Rally was an instant assurance to my heart that I have found the perfect site. The carnival games was a cherry on top to the Fall Rallies package overall. We (the Special Projects Committee) wanted to entice the members to learning more about Pediatric Trauma Program, Project Eliminate, and Live2Learn without the same old trifolds. Inspired by our DCON theme, we decided to have the incentive to tie in with the carnival theme. Coincidentally, a community center that my home club (Glen A. Wilson) KIWIN’S and Kiwanis club work close with holds an annual Halloween Carnival. I visited their site and their games and decided that this would be the perfect addition to informational booths. After that, it has been consecutive amazing opportunities from my a mazing adult advisors, Mahmood Bashir, John Carlos, and
Robert Santo, giving our committee incredible support to make the Fall Rallies the best it can be. I can’t express in enough words and character counts how grateful I have been blessed with a wonderful committee. Every single one of them has made a huge contribution to the upcoming tremendous Fall Rallies. We have become such a united group of individuals that through this committee I have made far out family-like connections to Northern California where Amanda Colindas resides or even remotely close ones to Southern California where Elise Umetsu resides. The endless Skype calls Nicolette Cruz and I had to pitch each other ideas for Fall Rally have allowed us to grow closer like sisters. And even when our committee had our first Skype conversation to prep for Fall Rally, Larry Lam and Noah Basit made it seem so easy to become comfortable. Overall, this committee has become my family and I am so grateful for their support every single step of the way. I would just like to close this letter thanking everyone who has supported me especially in the past couple of months. I have been crazily stressed about Fall Rally, but in the end it has all been worth it so you, the members, can enjoy the wonderful event the Special Projects Committee has planned for you. I truly hope to see you all there. Yours In Service, Sophia Uemura kiwins.goldstoneltg@gmail.com

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Q: What do district committees do? Do they contribute much to the actual KIWIN’S district?
A: This term, we have many district committees. Check out our website www.kiwins.org>about>district board>district committee to see each district committee. Q: What are the new ideas that DB is trying to implement this year? A: We have many new ideas this year! Please check out our website www.kiwins.org to see what we had planned for district projects as well as our goals.
Q: Are district committees part of DB? A: District committees are a part of district board. However, the committee members who are not on district board are not part of district board.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

MONTHLY DIVISON FEATURE Iris Shim President Camarillo Turquoise Division
October was a hectic yet an exciting month filled with service and ohana. We focused on service events this food such as serving food to the homeless at our county rescue mission and working alongside our Kiwanis club for their Applebee’s pancake breakfast fundraiser. The highlight of the month was PTP week. Throughout the month, we collected toiletries to donate to Casa Pacifica and ended off the week with an incredibly fundraiser: we took over the bowling alley with 14 lanes and over 75 people and raised $589.01, helping strike out PTP. Because the fundraiser was a tournament, people got super competitive but everyone still had fun. We were able to gain a closer ohana through this event as people got to know each other and become more involved with KIWIN’S.

MONTHLY CLUB FEATURE Hannah-Fay Omengan President Olympian Emerald Division
Under new management, Olympian High School KIWIN’S has done a lot to prove their worth in Emerald Division. For the month of October, OHS KIWIN’S had full attendance when we volunteered at a few local elementary schools’ fall festivals and for two breast cancer awareness walks. The interns in our board have been a successful group of hard workers who planned a successful club bonding day and PTP week. Matthew Villanueva, who planned the KIWIN’S bonding, held a potluck and water balloon fight at our local park in order for our members to bond with each other as well as with board members. For PTP week, our interns, MJ Lara, Jasmine McKenzie, Antwaine Sermons, and Matthew Villanueva were in charge of making plans for each day. Despite their busy lifestyles, they were able to make each day a success. (You can follow the story on our instagram: @ olympiankiwins) In the beginning of October, we had a Project Eliminate Bake Sale. At this bake sale, we were able to raise $122. By the time Trick-orTreat for UNICEF concluded, our officers and members were able to raise over $300. In addition, we worked with a local church and participated in Operation Christmas Child. This project by Samaritan’s Purse sends out boxes to local communities and when the boxes are filled, hands them to children in third world countries. At OHS KIWIN’S we were able to fill 15 boxes with toys, hygiene items, and school supplies for children who are not as fortunate as we are. As the year comes to a close, we plan to have a Friendsgiving, finalize our Book Drive (which we have over 200 books donated), and end the year with an Ugly Christmas Sweater Party.

event/AKTION CLUB POTLUCK date/november 30, 2015 This Thanksgiving, Glen A. Wilson KIWIN’S organized a holiday dinner for Aktion Club, a service club for mentally disabled adults. The potluck was held at the Del Haven Community Center, where Aktion Club and KIWIN’S members engaged in friendly conversation and got to know one another. This event was an amazing experience because we were able to tell them about Thanksgiving, and ask them who they were thankful for. We even helped
them make Thanksgiving cards for their loved ones! Afterwards, the Aktion Club members all got in line and we served them a delicious holiday dinner, complete with turkey, mashed potatoes, and salad. Seeing the delight and holiday cheer on their faces made the whole event worth it!
