GREETINGS AND HELLO Anastasia Slepukhova Key Club International Trustee Alabama/CNH KIWIN’S/New York

Happy Fall CNH KIWIN’S! Can you believe it is already November? Here in Virginia, fall has definitely taken presence as the leaves changed to brilliant hues of orange and the autumn breeze welcomed cold temperatures in the 40s. I hope that you all have had a terrific past month, and took advantage of the fun projects that the Key Club International Board and your District Board had organized! I was truly elated seeing many of your posts on social media during KIWIN’S Week in the first week of November, there was so much KIWIN’S spirit that truly manifested your passion for service, and our organization! Another exciting event many Key Clubbers worldwide participated in October was Trick-Or-Treat for UNICEF! I want to give a special ‘Thanks!’ to those of you who dedicated your Halloween to service and participated in a fundraiser. Now that you have done the hard work of collecting the funds, it is very important to follow up with the members and get the money turned in! Be sure to send in a check or money order along with a filled out gift form to the ELIMINATE Project at the Kiwanis International Foundation (P.O. Box 6457 Dept #286 Indianapolis, IN 46206 USA) by December 31st ! Clubs that meet the deadline and raise more than US$250 will be eligible to receive a special banner patch! If you think you can raise $500 or more, I strongly recommend talking to your sponsoring Kiwanis club about joining forces for the ELIMINATE Project and working together to achieve a Unity Award! Speaking of Kiwanis, November is the official Kiwanis Family Month! What makes Key Club so unique and successful are our close ties to Kiwanis family members around the world, which in its own way helps Key Clubbers flourish. Regardless what stage in life a person may be, there is a Kiwanis Family branch available with open arms. Weather you have a close relationship with your Kiwanis club, or if you don’t have one at all, November gives you the opportunity to reach out to them and connect with your counterparts. You would be surprised by how much a Key Club can grow and benefit from a good relationship with their sponsoring Kiwanis club, so I recommend taking the full advantage of this month. Send thank you cards, attend

a Kiwanis meeting, plan a joint service project or even write words of encouragement to K-Kids and Builder’s Clubs! With a sound Kiwanis Family around you, just imagine how successful the rest of your year can be! I wish you all the very best in this month as you prepare for your Annual Fall Rallies! I would especially recommend inviting your friends that may not have been fully convinced about joining Key Club yet! Often times, it only takes one event; a Key Leader, DCON, or a Fall Rally to understand the scope of our organization, which can change a student’s life. Your District Board has worked hard to organize the Fall Rallies; I hope you take advantage of the opportunity to see fellow Key Clubbers before DCON! On a final note, please know that I am very accessible to assist you in a variety of different forms! If you need me to write an article, Skype into a meeting, help you plan an event, brainstorm ideas, or simply to even talk – just let me know! Thank you for all that you do for your homes, schools and communities! Yours in Service, Anastasia Slepukhova slepukhova.anastasia@gmail.com

OS Sophia Uemura CNH KIWIN’S Goldstone LTG Hello fellow manatees, dinosaurs, turtles, gators, etc. My name is Sophia Uemura and I am the Goldstone Lieutenant Governor and the Co-chair for the Special Projects committee that plans the year Fall Rallies! I am so excited and honored to write a letter in the CNH KIWIN’S District Newsletter. Anyways, I hope you all are VERY excited for Fall Rally because it has been long and exhausting for me and the co-chair, Nicolette Cruz, planning these events! Nevertheless, I hope you are all excited to see what we have in store for you all! There are so many new elements in Fall Rally such as carnival games (that *ahem* tie in with our DCON theme), Social Media Challenge Week, and a brand new location for our Fall Rally South. I’ll let you all in on a secret about our new location (William Peak Park). At the park you can see the tallest ride from Knott’s Berry Farm: The Accelerator! Isn’t that incredibly exciting?! Honestly that sight is what first drew me into this location. Being able to see Knott’s Berry Farm from the site of Fall Rally was an instant assurance to my heart that I have found the perfect site. The carnival games was a cherry on top to the Fall Rallies package overall. We (the Special Projects Committee) wanted to entice the members to learning more about Pediatric Trauma Program, Project Eliminate, and Live2Learn without the same old trifolds. Inspired by our DCON theme, we decided to have the incentive to tie in with the carnival theme. Coincidentally, a community center that my home club (Glen A. Wilson) KIWIN’S and Kiwanis club work close with holds an annual Halloween Carnival. I visited their site and their games and decided that this would be the perfect addition to informational booths. After that, it has been consecutive amazing opportunities from my a mazing adult advisors, Mahmood Bashir, John Carlos, and

Robert Santo, giving our committee incredible support to make the Fall Rallies the best it can be. I can’t express in enough words and character counts how grateful I have been blessed with a wonderful committee. Every single one of them has made a huge contribution to the upcoming tremendous Fall Rallies. We have become such a united group of individuals that through this committee I have made far out family-like connections to Northern California where Amanda Colindas resides or even remotely close ones to Southern California where Elise Umetsu resides. The endless Skype calls Nicolette Cruz and I had to pitch each other ideas for Fall Rally have allowed us to grow closer like sisters. And even when our committee had our first Skype conversation to prep for Fall Rally, Larry Lam and Noah Basit made it seem so easy to become comfortable. Overall, this committee has become my family and I am so grateful for their support every single step of the way. I would just like to close this letter thanking everyone who has supported me especially in the past couple of months. I have been crazily stressed about Fall Rally, but in the end it has all been worth it so you, the members, can enjoy the wonderful event the Special Projects Committee has planned for you. I truly hope to see you all there. Yours In Service, Sophia Uemura kiwins.goldstoneltg@gmail.com

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Q: Why is this year’s theme for DCON a circus? A: District Board wanted to focus on service and a type of celebration for our 40th year as a district. Thus, “Cirque du Service: The 40th Spectacular”-our District Convention theme slogan-hits the bulls eye for all the criteria. Q: How do District Committees work? A: District Committees are assigned by the District Governor and the Committee Heads are composed of District Board. The committee members are chosen through an application process in the beginning of the term and what each committee does is assigned through directives by the District Governor.

Q: How are Lieutenant Governors elected? A:Lieutenant Governors are elected on a divisional level during Conclave in the month of March. They make a speech in front of their division and the division appoints two members from each school as representatives for election.

Fall Rally is our biggest fundraiser for our Minor Empahsis, Pediatric Truama Program! Our District Goal is $14,000! ALL proceeds made from admission into the rally and from the Knott’s Tickets go to PTP, which helps buy new equipment for hospitals, train doctors, provide grants to do PTP service projects, and scholarships! From personal experience, I can definitely say the Rally is an experience you cannot get anywhere else as you will be cheering your heart out, meeting people from all over California, and having so much fun at Knott’s! If you would like more information about date, time, location, and pricing, please talk to me or your LTG! This month’s quote is a Quaker saying I like to use to prompt inner reflection: “Let your life Speak”

MONTHLY DIVISON FEATURE Iris Shim President Camarillo Turquoise Division

October was a hectic yet an exciting month filled with service and ohana. We focused on service events this food such as serving food to the homeless at our county rescue mission and working alongside our Kiwanis club for their Applebee’s pancake breakfast fundraiser. The highlight of the month was PTP week. Throughout the month, we collected toiletries to donate to Casa Pacifica and ended off the week with an incredibly fundraiser: we took over the bowling alley with 14 lanes and over 75 people and raised $589.01, helping strike out PTP. Because the fundraiser was a tournament, people got super competitive but everyone still had fun. We were able to gain a closer ohana through this event as people got to know each other and become more involved with KIWIN’S.

MONTHLY CLUB FEATURE Hannah-Fay Omengan President Olympian Emerald Division

Under new management, Olympian High School KIWIN’S has done a lot to prove their worth in Emerald Division. For the month of October, OHS KIWIN’S had full attendance when we volunteered at a few local elementary schools’ fall festivals and for two breast cancer awareness walks. The interns in our board have been a successful group of hard workers who planned a successful club bonding day and PTP week. Matthew Villanueva, who planned the KIWIN’S bonding, held a potluck and water balloon fight at our local park in order for our members to bond with each other as well as with board members. For PTP week, our interns, MJ Lara, Jasmine McKenzie, Antwaine Sermons, and Matthew Villanueva were in charge of making plans for each day. Despite their busy lifestyles, they were able to make each day a success. (You can follow the story on our instagram: @ olympiankiwins) In the beginning of October, we had a Project Eliminate Bake Sale. At this bake sale, we were able to raise $122. By the time Trick-orTreat for UNICEF concluded, our officers and members were able to raise over $300. In addition, we worked with a local church and participated in Operation Christmas Child. This project by Samaritan’s Purse sends out boxes to local communities and when the boxes are filled, hands them to children in third world countries. At OHS KIWIN’S we were able to fill 15 boxes with toys, hygiene items, and school supplies for children who are not as fortunate as we are. As the year comes to a close, we plan to have a Friendsgiving, finalize our Book Drive (which we have over 200 books donated), and end the year with an Ugly Christmas Sweater Party.

event/ZOO BOO date/october 31, 2015 From alligators to zebras, heroes to villains, and all sorts of strange but nonetheless creative Halloween originals, we had a couple hundred people come visit us on Hallow’s Eve. In fact, we ran out of candy before we ran out of customers! We were well-staffed throughout the event, and we, along with Circle K, turned the Applegate Zoo into a unique experience only found in Merced. As the day turned to night, most of our volunteers even participated in the main at-

traction, the Haunted House, during slow or overstaffed times. This tradition can only get better as time goes on, and although we performed great and had a major success, there were still improvements to be made and enhancements to be added to make next year even more special.
