editor’s message Hello KIWIN’S! Good luck in school! Most of us have 4 to 5 months left!! And to the seniors, please cherish this last semester in high school! I’m excited to meet everyone at DCON 2016!

GREETINGS AND HELLO Anastasia Slepukhova Key Club International Trustee Alabama/CNH KIWIN’S/New York
Happy Winter CNH KIWIN’S! Wow! We have less than a month left until we celebrate the start of a New Year and challenge ourselves with New Year’s resolutions! I know mine will entail the spending more time at the gym, doing more hands-on service and trying to cut down on Cranberry Ginger Ale (I seriously cannot get enough of this stuff !) This is also a great time for your clubs and officers to evaluate the performance of your clubs and make some New Year’s resolutions. Goal setting is an important skill that distinguishes high performing clubs and makes the most successful leaders. With a good few months left under your terms, make sure to make the most out of them and use this time to make any necessary changes that are hindering your clubs from reach their full potential. After you sit down with your officers and create those goals, be sure to share them with your club, Faculty Advisor, Kiwanis Club and your school! Sharing a goal with others is one of the best ways to motivate yourself and make yourself accountable for achieving it (You can even share your goals for the new year with me!) Another important topic I want to discuss this month are the upcoming officer elections. Leaders help other leads grow, so if you know an underclassman that has the potential for leadership but is lacking the confidence; give them the gentle push they need. My Division’s Lt.Governor provided me with the encouragement to run for an office my freshman year, and although I lost, it was the best decisions I made in my high school career as it got me more involved in Key Club. However, if you have been exposed to KIWIN’S and already have a potential position in mind for what you want to run for, I encourage you to take a step back and think just once more. Ask yourself these questions: Why am I running? Do I have a vision and a strong work ethic that will bring up my club/division/district next year? Will this position challenge and grow me as a leader? Do I have the time to commit to this position and excel to its highest expectations? Have I observed and talked to someone who currently holds the position I want to run for? Do my parents/school/club support me? I don’t expect you to have a “Yes” for each of these questions, but as long as you have taken them into consideration
before you run for office, you should be set! Know that the outcomes of the elections don’t determine the kind of servant leader you are or your competency as a person. I have lost three elections within my time in Key Club, and with every loss came an abundance of new knowledge about myself, that looking back now makes me the kind of servant leader that I am. It’s okay to loose and its okay to win! Finally, I want to wish everyone an extraordinary holiday season! You have all been working so hard the past few months in serving your communities, be sure to take some time during this winter break to relax and reflect on an amazing journey you have been a part of thus far as a servant leader in this awesome organization we call Key Club. OS Elise Umetsu CNH KIWIN’S Turquoise LTG Life Among the Grizzlies -by Elise Umetsu Member’s Log, Day 83: Journal, I believe that I have finally become a KIWIN. Perhaps my dues were officially processed and I am now experiencing the change I woke up holding a branch from the tree outside my house. I’ve found that I have been sleepwalking lately in search of pole-like objects to satiate my craving for a spirit stick. I am becoming one with CNH. Instead of the radio, I cheer to myself in the car. Sometimes at red lights I shout out my window to adjacent cars, informing them that I have spirit yes I do, and demanding to know if they do too. The other day I ran four miles to help an old lady with her groceries because I felt my KIWIN’S senses tingling. What have I become? Whatever phenomenon has overtaken me, I think I like it. I missed a general meeting due to a test make-up last Tuesday and experienced severe withdrawals for the following 6 hours. I finally managed to relieve the symptoms by stalking the CNH KIWIN’S page on Facebook and liking their posts dating back to 2014, then posting another ELEMONATE challenge video. It will be my 23rd one this week- at this point, I am considering going on a lemon juice cleanse and starting a new trend, the ELEMONATE WEEK EXTRAVAGANZA. I wonder if district board would be pleased. I wonder if Jade Wong would be pleased. This may be my last entry for a while, as I have packed my schedule full of triathlon volunteering and shelter serving. What free time remains I intend to make use of by channeling my creative talents into my DCON backdrop submission. I plan to cover my face in paint and make a repeat pattern across the expanse of paper in circus colors, for I feel that I am the true embodiment of KIWIN’S. And journal, I feel good. Oh. I. Feel. So. Good.

They definitely contribute to the district because each committee works on a specific part to accomplish the goals and tasks of the entire district. Q: What are the new ideas that DB is trying to implement this year? A: We have many new ideas this year! Please check out our website www.kiwins.org to see what we had planned for district projects as well as our goals.
Q: Are district committees part of DB? A: District committees are a part of district board. However, the committee members who are not on district board are not part of district board.

JANUARY 2016 GOVERNOR’S CORN Hello everyone! HAPPY New year!!! I hope everyone takes advantage of the holiday break to rest up, rejuvenate, and spend time with loved ones! MONTHLY DIVISON FEATURE Iris Shim President Camarillo Turquoise Division
October was a hectic yet an exciting month filled with service and ohana. We focused on service events this food such as serving food to the homeless at our county rescue mission and working alongside our Kiwanis club for their Applebee’s pancake breakfast fundraiser. The highlight of the month was PTP week. Throughout the month, we collected toiletries to donate to Casa Pacifica and ended off the week with an incredibly fundraiser: we took over the bowling alley with 14 lanes and over 75 people and raised $589.01, helping strike out PTP. Because the fundraiser was a tournament, people got super competitive but everyone still had fun. We were able to gain a closer ohana through this event as people got to know each other and become more involved with KIWIN’S.

MONTHLY CLUB FEATURE Jessica Chang President Los Altos Goldstone Division
Our recently tried something new in order to add energy into our meetings. We divided our club amongst each class and whenever we have an event or a fundraising activity, whichever class brings the most members or fundraisers the most money would win points towards their class. The purpose of this was to show our members how Fall Rally or DCON would be. When it was Fall Rally season, we held mini spirit battles during our meetings. These mini spirit battles accounted for our increase in the number of members attending Fall Rally from last year to this year. For the UNICEF Trick-or-Treat boxes, our freshman class won and will be winning donuts in January. For the month of December, Los Altos KIWIN’S mainly focused on introducing members to DCON. We are currently providing them ideas to fundraise for it. Our treasurer Jonathan Chang set up a fundraiser at Chipotle on February 21. For Live2Learn, our Vice President Britney Pham is coordinating with our local library a day where we can read to children. Five of our members volunteered at the Rose Parade Decorations in Pasadena. I was one of the four winners of the Kiwanis Rose Float Essay contest. The day of the Rose Parade, I was taken back by how many people were watching and how many news channels and photographers there were. I could not thank Kiwanis enough for this indescribable experience.

*Found on kiwins.org *Fund is provided by the Kiwanis California Nevada Hawaii Foundation *A single club or multiple clubs can work apply together - Single club (you will be able to receive up to $250) - Multiple clubs (you will be able to receive up to $5,000) There is no due date for the PTP grant! It can be sent year round! Grant is sent to foundation@cnhkiwanis.org (Please cc yourself the grant). This grant is for projects revolving around the Pediatric Trauma Program! The application asks for information about your club, project details, and a budget, and must have the required signatures from advisors. This grant may not be used for fundraisers! You must submit it 30 days before the project start date! If the grant application is selected, you must submit a follow up grant report and funds expenditure report after 30 days of the event.
Youth Opportunities Fund Grant *Found on keyclub.org *Fund is provided by Kiwanis International Foundation *KIWIN’S clubs and members can apply *You may receive $100-2000. *Grant is DUE October 15th by 11:59pm EST *Send grant to yof@kiwanis.org & cc yourself the application. This fund is used to help fund clubs that benefit the school or commu community. The application asks for information about your club and important details for your project, such as a timeline and project budget. The budget may not be used for divisional or district projects. Usually, most applications are accepted when only a portion of the total cost is needed. If your application is selected, you must send a final report within 14 days of the project end.

38 Key Club International? Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. It is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through service to others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities. 31 Countries. 5,000 clubs. 260,000 members.
KIWIN'S Role in KCI? Cal-Nev-Ha KIWIN'S serves as the 32nd District of Key Club International (KCI). As a district in KCI, every KIWIN'S member has the duty to follow the core values while forming themselves into an ideal leader throughout their journey in the organization. Geographically, there are two districts in the California, Nevada, and Hawaii regions. Together, both sister districts should work together as a whole to create long lasting memories as well as to make a difference in Key Club International.

event/KYCC’S 22ND ANNUAL HOLIDAY CARNIVAL date/december 22, 2015 On December 19, 2015, LACES KIWIN’S members decided to help Koreatown Youth & Community Center (KYCC) in their 22nd Annual Holiday Carnival. Throughout the month, we giftwrapped toys, books, and other presents that would soon be distributed to kids throughout our community. When the awaited day final arrived, LACES KIWIN’S, helped out with exciting carnival games, special performances, and fun activities. Many decided to even help
out for the entire day, despite only being required of half ! The KYCC and KIWIN’S partnership brought all who attended, both volunteers and kids, a bright,warming smile to their faces.

CNH KIWIN’S Rose Float Parade Recap Jessica Chang from Los Altos KIWIN’S and Kaitelyn Pasillas from Chaffey KIWIN’S were awarded through an essay contest, a wonderful opportunity in that they were able to ride on the California-Nevada-Hawaii Kiwanis Rose Parade Float in the actual Rose Float Parade along several other Governors from the Service Leadership Programs and individuals. They represented CNH KIWIN’S well as they were able to connect with many other people on that day. “To me, it was not just the experience of riding on a float, but it is the people I shared this experience with. I hope everyone can one day experience riding on a float because it is truly something special. Thank you Mr. Wallach and others for giving me this opportunity.” - Jessica Chang, President of Los Altos KIWIN’S
“On the actual day of the parade, having the chance to witness the beauty of all the floats close hand instead of through a television screen, was an utterly amazing experience.
