editor’s message

Welcome back to school! I’m sad summer is over as well, but no fear because KIWIN’S will make our school year fun! Membership Update Center opens next Monday, September 14 and we’re hoping that all of our clubs get Early Bird Status! I know all of you can achieve it! Good luck this school year and I’m looking forward towards Fall Rally 2015!

GREETINGS AND HELLO Anastasia Slepukhova Key Club International Trustee Alabama/CNH KIWIN’S/New York

Greetings KIWIN’S! My name is Anastasia Slepukhova, and I’m so excited to introduce myself as your new International Trustee. I am humbled to be able to serve you this year; KIWIN’S is truly such a unique District full of history, passion and most importantly – ohana! My job as a Trustee in addition to voting on the International Board, voicing your opinions at Board Meetings and doing committee work is to support and be a liaison for my three assigned Districts. In conjunction to serving you this year, I am also very excited to be able to work with the New York and Alabama Key Clubbers! Simply put, my job is very similar to that of your Lt.Governor, but on the international level. However as a past District officer, I can attest that the most important job is held by you – our club officers and members. You are the ones putting in countless of hours organizing fundraisers and service projects. You are the face of Key Club in your communities, and that is why Key Club International is a household name across the world. And because there is so much work that you have to do in order to have thriving clubs, it is the job of everyone else on the District Board and Key Club International to do whatever it takes in order to make your job easier and provide you with all the necessary resources. So if you ever have any questions or if there is anything I can do for you, please don’t hesitate to ask. A little about me is that I am from the Capital District; I live just outside of Washington DC where I spend much of my time geocaching and trying new cuisine. I was born in Kyrgyzstan, and upon winning a Green Card Lottery, I moved to the United States 10 years ago. I am now a senior at Lake Braddock Secondary School in Virginia, where I am very involved with my Class as an Executive Officer, Student Government and I shoot for the Varsity Air Rifle Team. I love staying active and being involved, but just like many of you, service is my calling. I am known as “That Key Club Girl” as I roll into school with my Key Club license plate, water bottle, backpack, and of course one of my countless Key Club tees. My favorite service project is called “Fantasy Flight” which is an event organized by my local Dulles Airport. We decorate a plane and a

whole terminal to look like the North Pole, we dress up as Santa’s helpers and we create a special weekend for kids that participate. On the day of the event, flight attendants are all dressed up as elves and we take kids with terminal illnesses on the plane to the North Pole, where they receive presents and meet Santa. This is one of the most heartwarming projects I annually participate in, the most rewarding part being when you see a child again the following year, knowing they survived and you did something to make their day a little brighter. I want to thank you all for all the hard work you put into serving your communities. Your altruism is what motivates me to work hard each and every single day. If you have any feedback for me, or if there are any questions that you might have, please know that I am always here for you! You can add me on social media, or you can email me at slepukhova. anastasia@gmail.com Have a terrific year of service key clubbers! Hope to see you all at DCON! Yours in Service, Anastasia Slepukhova slepukhova.anastasia@gmail.com

Hello, CNH KIWIN’S!! It’s your District Secretary, Tiffany Nguyen, reporting for duty! With summer coming to a close, start switching out your video games for homework and your parties for study sessions!!! The fun doesn’t stop though, since school also means KIWIN’S MEETINGS!! Get all your friends, Romans, countrymen excited because this year is going to be the best one yet!! Don’t forget to get your teachers and local Kiwanis club involved as well, since there’s so much more outside of your high school! Keep doing what you’re doing, and here’s to even more successes in our future! Yours in Service, Tiffany Nguyen 2015-2016 CNH KIWIN’S District Secretary

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Q: Why is this year’s theme for DCON a circus? A: District Board wanted to focus on service and a type of celebration for our 40th year as a district. Thus, “Cirque du Service: The 40th Spectacular”-our District Convention theme slogan-hits the bulls eye for all the criteria. Q: How do District Committees work? A: District Committees are assigned by the District Governor and the Committee Heads are composed of District Board. The committee members are chosen through an application process in the beginning of the term and what each committee does is assigned through directives by the District Governor.

Q: How are Lieutenant Governors elected? A:Lieutenant Governors are elected on a divisional level during Conclave in the month of March. They make a speech in front of their division and the division appoints two members from each school as representatives for election.

MONTHLY DIVISON FEATURE Kay-Kay Kho President Hercules High Jade Division

This month the Jade division was very successful in chartering and gaining members. With our amazing LTG, Nicolette, we have recruited news schools, and our Jaguar Ohana is growing greatly. Hercules, Richmond, and Oakland, the officially chartered schools in the division, are working EXTREMELY to make Jade one of the best divisions possible. Currently, we are in the process of chartering Making-Waves Academy, De Anza, and Middle College High. As KIWINNERS, I do believe that we have developed as a whole. Our bond is so strong that I don’t think anything will surpass our hardworking ethics. Despite technical hardships, I’m proud of my home division, the wonderful Norcal Jade Division!

08

MONTHLY CLUB FEATURE Olivia Tang President Glen A. Wilson Goldstone Division

In the month of August, Glen A. Wilson KIWIN’S planned a project for our Major Emphasis: Live2Learn and refurbished our local park. Our club planned a service project with the Maryvale Orphanage on August 29th, where we spent the day reading to the children, playing games, and doing crafts with them. We spent the day with children age six through twelve and made each of them their own little gift that included a children’s book, a pack of color pencils, and some candy to brighten their day. Since the Orphanage was divided by gender, our members split into two groups. We did crafts with the

children and spent time playing with them outside in their playground. On August 8th, we went to our local park and repainted the picnic tables that were vandalized. Our members came out and bonded with one another as we helped to refurbish the damaged park picnic tables. On August 1st, many of our members attended a monthly K-Family event held by the Hacienda Heights Kiwanis Club, Adopt-a-Highway. Adopt-a-Highway is scheduled for the first Saturday of every month where all branches of the K-Family comes together to pick up trash along the main streets of Hacienda Heights to keep our community clean.

Our club is trying to plan more hands-on service projects for our members to participate in and we are trying to plan at least two to three projects a month, on top of the opportunities that our sponsoring Kiwanis club has provided us with.
