Spring Cleaning Week Time To Clean Up Your Act? It’s that time of year when traditionally we throw ourselves into a spring clean – or do we?

A

study in 2017 by Money Magpie found that 50% of the UK population has ditched this annual ritual. Long gone are the days of washing soot from the walls and beating a year of dust out of the furniture. Central heating, improved cleanliness and hygiene mean many of us are abandoning the annual cleanse. Add to that a lack of time and enthusiasm, and it’s no surprise this tradition is becoming obsolete. Yet March is still the perfect time to harness the optimism and opportunity of spring. That’s why APDO (the Association of Professional Declutterers & Organisers) has a modern alternative to spring cleaning with Spring Clearing Week running from 2127 March 2022. This year’s theme “Clear for Calm” is designed to help you focus on creating a positive environment for the rest of 2022, empowering you to let go of your clutter and create more physical and mental space to do the things you love. They want us to reduce stress, save time and increase our wellbeing by clearing the surplus stuff in our lives. And remember that unnecessary “stuff” can apply to objects, emotions, diary commitments and even relationships. Local CPO® Certified Professional Organizer and APDO Past President Katherine Blackler (SortMySpace) explains that because each person has a different threshold and understanding of clutter, there are no fixed rules to suit all households. It’s not up to her to tell you how many china bowls or DVDs you should have and (sadly!), she won’t be the one to tell your partner they need to throw out their entire collection of books! What she does do however, is to challenge you to think carefully whether something is still serving you well. Ask yourself the following questions when considering your belongings: • Have I used or worn this in the last 6* months? • Will I use or wear this in the next 6* months? • Would I buy this for myself or my family now? If the answer to these is ‘No’, consider selling, donating, recycling or, as last resort, ditching. For items you do use infrequently, ask yourself: • Do I need to own this myself? Could I hire / borrow it on the odd occasion I do need it? Check out the Library of Things in Crystal Palace that lends equipment and household items.

10 | SE21 - March 2022

• If I kept this item, can I lend it to others to justify the space it takes up between my / our personal usage? • If that job needs doing in future, would I be likely to hire a tradesperson who’d bring their own tools or equipment? • Will the technology have been superseded by the time I’m likely to use this? • Will I know exactly where to find this if I ever do need it? • Can I afford to re-buy it if I need my very own version of this in future? Katherine encourages you use Spring Clearing Week to think about what you could clear-out after the dreary winter months, to revitalise your space with renewed energy. *You may wish to extend this timeframe due to the extenuating circumstances of Covid.

Let’s tackle the jobs you’ve been hiding from; whether it’s organising one cupboard, one room or the entire house.

What To Do This Month Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw As the weather warms up, things start getting busy in the garden – here’s what to do this month.

Fertilise & Mulch • After weeding, sprinkle soil with an organic fertilser, such as chicken pellets or fish, blood and bone and lightly fork around trees and shrubs ideally when the soil is moist. Give roses a special rose feed or a balanced fertiliser. • Feed ericaceous shrubs such as camellias and azaleas with ericaceous feed. • Cover bare soil with a 5cm layer of organic matter such as well rotten manure to stop it losing water as weather warms up, watering first if it’s dry. A mulch suppresses weeds and looks smart too.

• Prune late flowering clematis – such as Jackmannii (Group 3) by cutting them 23-24cm from the ground, to just above a healthy bud – easy! • Deadhead hydrangeas, removing around a third of last year’s growth.

Move & Plant

Sow & Grow

• If there’s a shrub that’s outgrown its spot, now’s the time move it. Take as large a root ball as you can, drag it over to its new home on a plastic sheet, add well-rotted compost to the hole, water it well and it should take off. • Plant new climbers, by digging a hole, 22cm away from walls and fences so that the plant is not in a dry ‘rain shadow’. • Create new plants by dividing clumps of overgrown summer perennials. Tease the lifted plant apart with two forks back-to-back and don’t be nervous about a few roots breaking.

• Grow scented sweet peas by make a bamboo wigwam and planting two seeds at 30cm intervals and 1cm deep in situ. Young plants may need help before tendrils twine themselves around the support.

Prune & Tidy • Finish cutting down overgrown perennials and grasses to make way for new growth. • Finish pruning your roses. With sharp secateurs, remove dead, diseased and crossing stems, then prune flowering wood back by a third. Cut to 6mm above an outward facing healthy bud– and wear gloves! • Cut down established cornus (dogwood) to the base to encourage colourful winter stems. • Tackle overgrown climbers now – new buds mean you can see where the stems are dead. Honeysuckle, ivies, rambling roses and winter flowering jasmine can be pruned hard. Summer flowering jasmine can also be pruned by taking out the main stem or two to the ground. 12 | SE21 - March 2022

Plant & Deadhead Bulbs • Snowdrops rarely grow well from dry bulbs so divide or plant them while they’re still green. • Plant summer flowering bulbs such as gladiolus and lilies in a sunny spot. You can also plant out faded forced bulbs for blooms next year. • Deadhead daffodils and let the foliage die back to encourage new flower buds to form inside the bulb.

Cut & Feed Your Lawn • Start mowing your lawn for first time, just not too short at first. • If you’re feeling energetic, aerate your lawn by making holes with a fork 10cm deep and 20cm apart. • Give the lawn a feed of chicken manure pellets towards the end of the month – ideally when the lawn is damp.

Finally, watch out for slugs They love juicy new growth and will be coming out in wet weather for a nibble. Try slug nematodes for an organic solution.

Baked Halibut Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk

One Pan Mediterranean Baked Halibut - Serves 4 Halibut is the largest flatfish in the sea – to be found in the freezing cold waters off Scotland, Norway, Iceland and Newfoundland. I love it for its firm, yet flaky texture, and its mild, sweet taste which makes it perfect for all sorts of seasonings. Always go for cuts from the middle of the fish, not the tail which is full of bones. Look for white glossy flesh, with no brown spots and be sure to purchase farmed or line-caught North Pacific halibut which is not endangered. This is a super quick, easy and healthy recipe that is perfect for a midweek meal. It is really flexible too, so easy to adjust according to numbers and personal taste.

Ingredients For The Sauce • • • • • • • • • • •

Zest & juice of two lemons Filippo Berio extra virgin olive oil – approximately 6 tablespoons Fresh Garlic chopped – two-four cloves according to personal taste Salt - teaspoon Pepper - teaspoon Mixed Italian herbs – two teaspoons or to personal taste Other Ingredients Green Beans ends trimmed Cherry Tomatoes cut in half Onions sliced (red or white according to personal preference) Halibut Fillets (four large or eight small and serve two per person)

Method 1) reheat oven 180c / gas 4 2) Mix the sauce ingredients together well 3) oss the vegetables in the sauce, then transfer to a large baking tin using a slotted spoon 4) Now toss the fillets of halibut in the sauce to ensure they are well coated 5) Place the fish on the baking sheet next to the vegetables and pour any remaining sauce over the top of fish and veggies. 14 | SE21 - March 2022

6) Place in the oven for approximately 15 minutes 7) You can serve ‘straight from the oven’ without any extras, or pad out with salad, quinoa or your own favourite grains. Enjoy!

The Concept of The Business Athlete

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com This month I’d like to introduce the concept of the business athlete. What is a business athlete, how you can become a business athlete and tips and habits we can learn from professional athletes that we can apply to our everyday lives.

What is a Business Athlete? I think we would benefit from seeing ourselves a little bit more like an athlete does. In terms of managing stress, improving our longevity, of being healthier and more energised day to day. Minimising our risk of burnout. An athlete will look ahead to their schedule and they will identify when their peaks are, when do they need to perform at their best? When’s the competition? When’s the event, when’s the tournament. And they’ll then make sure they really doubled down on sleep, mental health, energy, nutrition and hydration. All the things that are important for performance.

How to Become a Business Athlete If we were to emulate that thinking and that approach to our own lives, we would do a lot better. If as business people we were to look ahead and think where are our Wimbledon’s? When’s the next big work event? Or even wider than just our business lives, when’s the next big family event? When is the next exam? Whatever it might be. Planning prior to that event, like an athlete would, so we doubled down on all the things that are important for health and performance. That’s the essence of the business athlete concept. Preparation for big events is vital, but also closely aligned to that is that is what we do after that event. It’s vital we get enough recovery. We need to de-load. Just like an athlete would, so they would take their foot off the gas a bit. Serena Williams, for example, would not be grandslam fit all year round. Post event athletes focus on massage, sleep, hydration, nutrition, a lot of the same things, but with a view to recovering rather than building up. So in the same way as business people, we need to plan in our recovery, make sure recovery is prioritised and we assign time to do so. 16 | SE21 - March 2022

Burnout Prevention The Business Athlete idea is that if we did more of that and we were able to plan and pace for the ups and downs, the peaks and troughs of life, that we would be healthier, happier, and more energised. We definitely wouldn’t be burning out as much. So my observation is that most of us expect to be at peak performance all year round, and it simply isn’t sustainable. So that’s the idea of the business athlete.

Questions to Consider My question to you is what are your Wimbledon’s? What are your big events coming up? What do you know is in the diary, that’s going to be draining or demand a lot of your time and attention and how can you get ready for that? So that’s what I’ll leave you with.

Computing Wonders Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk Rob Payne, teacher of ICT at Alleyn’s, explains how we can encourage our children in ICT.

I

f you weren’t adept with computers before the first lockdown, the chances are you have improved, and your child is likely to have done so too. Knowledge of computer systems is increasingly important in our home-working/ hybrid computer information society, and while our children sometimes appear to teach themselves, it is important to encourage them to use these tools effectively and safely. Here are some ways to develop your child’s ICT know-how:

Computer Literacy Children can develop their creative skills through software applications, and if you follow your child’s interests in choosing these apps, they will engage fully. They may wish to design animated stories, games or scientific simulations using software like Scratch, remix music using GarageBand, or use PowerPoint to create animated presentations.

Specialising Encourage your child’s interest in coding with free online software such as iDEA, Lightbot, or Fotor, which offer tutorials on developing coding or building websites, editing photos and other ICT skills. If your child is interested in physical computing, check out the Raspberry Pi with Python.

Keyboarding Skills The ability to touch type is essential and the sooner your child learns to do it the sooner they will reap the benefits, reducing fatigue and screen time. There are free websites, like Typing Club, that your child can use to learn - and you’ll be surprised how quickly they pick it up with regular practice.

Talk About It Build your child’s enthusiasm for IT by discussing with them the role of computers in society, such as in health, commerce or the environment. Computers can help sustainability through automation, for example, by monitoring and controlling devices such as lighting to reduce light pollution and energy consumption. 20 | SE21 - March 2022

Stay Up To The Minute Develop your child’s understanding of computerrelated topics by watching presentations on computer-related current affairs on sites such as TEDTalk. Encourage them to research major contributors to the field of ICT like Ada Lovelace, Grace Hopper and Radia Perlman. Finally, make them aware of the Internet of Things - devices embedded in everyday objects that collect and share data.

Staying Safe The Internet offers exciting opportunities for your child to learn, research, and collaborate with others globally. Here are some tips to keep your child safe: • Keep devices in a family space where you can monitor activity • Ensure your child doesn’t post personal information or photos online without your permission • Video calls can be recorded so make sure your child understands not to say or do anything they would not want shared more widely • Ensure your child knows the settings of any software they are using, e.g how to blur the background on a video call • Ensure that they use passcodes where possible and change them regularly • Use monitoring programmes like Qustodio, Safe Kids, Net Nanny or Kaspersky

Financial Matters

With David Frederick FCCA | Marcus Bishop Associates | marcus-bishop.com

Tax Efficient Closure Of 2021-22 As we near the end of 2021-22, what would be the summary end of year school report? Maybe, another year bullied by COVID-19; with millions of employees being subjected to furlough; others experienced shorter working hours or the loss of jobs; the self-employed continued to be supported by government grants; and the slow puncture of our hospitality and travel sector. Does the outlook for 2022-23 look brighter? May be not, as households punctuate their language with the word ‘up’ in almost every sentence. If there was any doubt, here are six examples; fuel prices-up; domestic utility billsup; Council Tax-up; interest rates-up; inflation-up; and national insurance-up. However, there’s no mention of salaries or wages following that path. In a few cases some households may experience salary or wages going-up, however it is unlikely that salary or wages will be going-up at the same rate or greater than any of our six items. Just to add to the household challenges, there are rumours of interest rates goingup a maximum of five times during the year. Households may be thinking, ‘never before has so many, suffered for so much in such a short period of time.’ Whether a backward reflection of 202122 or a look forward to 2022-23, households may want to start restructuring their financial affairs tax efficiently. Two self-reflective questions that should always be addressed are: have you maximised all of your tax-free allowances? Have you claimed all reliefs available?

Personal Allowances An easy win in some households is the utilisation of the marriage allowance. Civil partners and married couples may be able to transfer £1,260 of unutilised personal allowance between spouse or civil partner, if certain conditions are met. This is known as the marriage allowance and could save households up to £252 in income tax. Lest we not forget, ‘saving a small amount soon builds up to a large amount’. Some households may be able to utilise rent-a22 | SE21 - March 2022

room relief in 2022-23. This can provide a single householder with £7,500 or £3,750 for co-owners.

Pension Contributions Higher income earners may choose to use the annual pension allowance. Personal tax relief applies to pension contributions but this is restricted by the annual allowance or net-relevant earnings. The annual allowance is usually £40,000 for those with an adjusted annual income from all sources, including pension contributions under £240,000 and threshold income of £200,000 or less. For every £2 of adjusted income over £240,000, an individual’s annual allowance reduces by £1, down to a minimum of £4,000, although this usually applies to those with an annual income of £312,000 or more. Provided you had a pension fund during a previous tax year (up to a maximum of three years), it is possible to carry forward any unused allowances for those years. Beware, if your total pension savings exceed the lifetime allowance of £1,073,100 in 2021-22, you might be liable to tax when you draw benefits.

Employers Employees who continue to work from home ‘due to COVID-19’ may be able to claim tax relief of £26 a month from HMRC. Alternatively, employers can pay this allowance to their employees taxfree via payroll. As household bills rise this will make a minor dent! Employees who are provided a company electric car or some hybrids in 2021-22 will pay 1% on this benefit-in-kind. In 2022-23 this will increase to 2%. The qualifying conditions are: hybrid company cars should to be registered from 6 April 2020; have CO² emissions of less than 50g/km, and travel at least 130 miles on a single electric charge. Other low benefit-in-kind rates apply depending on the CO² emissions and the electric miles it can travel on a single charge. Despite the 6-ups ahead, households can still uncover tax efficient savings this year. Happy 2022-23!

Dogs & The End Of Covid Restrictions

Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

I

f reports are to be believed all Covid related restrictions have finally come to an end. Many of you will either be contemplating or are already heading back to office life, away from home. For those dogs and pups acquired over the last two years this could amount to disaster. Owners may not have prepared for complete cessation of Covid rules and their dogs will be used to having owners or extended family around most of the time. A sudden, major change in routine could spark negative associations that stick and intensify. Not all dogs will develop separation issues but a number will and in some cases that outcome could have been avoided. Rather than take the risk it is best to have a plan before leaving your dog for real.

First Test The Waters Use a remote camera device and set it up on the widest angle possible, so you can monitor the area where your dog normally chooses to rest during the day. The more you can see, the better. Aim to leave the house for no more than 30 minutes. If over that time your dog goes to their rest area and settles and sleeps, then we can assume they are able to cope with some separation. You can build on a recommended basic separation programme If on the trial run your dog starts howling, barking, pacing, toileting, salivating, destroying things or generally looking distressed, then please return home immediately. These are all signs that your dog is in some way unhappy or frustrated and experiencing emotions that could be linked to separation. In this case you are best to seek expert assessment and the assistance of a professional.

What Not To Do It is important that you do not chastise your dog for any unwanted behaviours arising out of separation from you. It is not their fault they are doing their best to cope, chastising them could also make their behaviours worse. If your dog follows you around the house or is affectionate or sleeps with you, do not feel you must stop these activities. Dogs with separation issues may do all these things, but so do many 24 | SE21 - March 2022

dogs that cope well with separation. If in doubt ask a specialist. Some dogs that appear to have a mild separation issue may not be getting enough exercise and mental enrichment. It is always a good idea to consider whether your dog is getting enough of either, to enable them to relax at points during the day. Many dogs can with a little help and patience be taught to cope with separation but the work has to be put in by the owner. The worst thing is to make the dog go ‘cold turkey’ through force of circumstance. Other dogs will require professional intervention- a vet visit, to ensure your dog is medically fit is the best first move. Dogs in discomfort or pain will obviously find separation from you scarier.

The Golden Rule Until you know your dog can cope with separation try not to leave them alone at all, other than for training setups. Consider getting cover from family, friends, and neighbours, and from services like dog walkers and day care.

Tuesday 22 March: Karen Joy Fowler – Booth

7pm - 8pm. Join bestselling author Karen Joy Fowler as she discusses her brilliant new novel, Booth, an epic and intimate novel about the theatrical family behind one of the most infamous figures in American history: John Wilkes Booth. The infamous and ill-fated Booths are a family of thespians, drinkers and dreamers divided by the issue of their day, one that is tearing the US nation in two. Junius is the patriarch, a celebrated Shakespearean actor who fled bigamy charges in England, at once both a mesmerising talent and a man of terrifying instability. As his children grow up in a remote farmstead in 1830s rural Baltimore, the country draws ever closer to the boiling point of secession and civil war. Of the six Booth siblings who survive to adulthood, each has their own dreams they must fight to realise, both on the stage and off it - but it is Johnny who makes the terrible decision that will change the course of history - the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Booth is a riveting novel focused on the very things that bind, and break, a family. Karen Joy Fowler is the author of six novels and three short story collections. We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2014, won the PEN/ Faulkner Prize and has sold over half a million copies. www.karenjoyfowler.com Dulwich Books, 6 Croxted Road, West Dulwich, London, SE21 8SW. What's On - March Wednesday 23 March: The Wood That Built London by Chris Schüler

7:30pm - 8:30pm. It is hard to imagine that the busy townscape of South London was once a great wood, stretching almost seven miles from Croydon to Deptford or that, scattered through the suburbs, from Dulwich to Norwood, a number of oak woodlands have survived since before the Norman Conquest. Join Village Books and Alleyn’s School Enterprises for an evening with Chris Schüler who will be discussing his book The Wood That Built London, a compelling narrative history that charts the fortune of the North Wood from the earliest times: it’s ecology, ownership, management, and its gradual encroachment by the expanding metropoli. ‘In this meticulously researched yet accessible work, historian C J Schüler brings to life a largely forgotten slice of the capital’s topography.’ Geographical Magazine Chris Schüler is the author of three illustrated histories of cartography: Mapping the World, Mapping the City and Mapping the Sea and Stars and co-author of the best-selling Traveller’s Atlas. Schüler has also written for The Independent, The Independent on Sunday, The Financial Times and New Statesman. https://www.village-books.co.uk/events/ LS Atrium, Alleyn's School, Townley Road, East Dulwich SE22 8SU. 28 | SE21 - March 2022

Friday 25 March: Wizz Jones, Simon Prager, Alfie Jones 7pm - 11pm. There are few artists with more claim to being a ‘musician’s musician’ than WIZZ JONES! Inspired by Big Bill Broonzy, Rambling Jack Elliot, Alexis Korner and Ewan MacColl, Wizz learned his craft from the likes of Davy Graham and Long John Baldry in the coffee bars of London’s Soho during the late fifties. He busked through Europe with Rod Stewart, and is cited by John Renbourn and Eric Clapton as an important early influence. With his unique acoustic guitar style, an eclectic repertoire and a ‘right hand worthy of Broonzy’, Wizz continues to tour on the acoustic folk and blues circuit (when covid rules allow .....) Inspired by legendary blues and gospel guitarist, Rev. Gary Davis, SIMON PRAGER has been involved in the British blues scene since the ‘60s. He first came to prominence on an album recorded and released in 1968, Blues Like Showers of Rain, and was part of the "All Star Medicine Show" in the seventies, with Steve Rye and Bob Hall. Simon also played occasionally with the late JoAnn Kelly and accompanied Sonny Terry when half of that legendary duo, Brownie McGhee, became ill. He was part of the ‘City Ramblers Revival’ skiffle group with the late Hylda Sims, Kev ‘doc’ Stenson and others. Nowadays, Simon performs solo and as part of a duo with Kevin ‘Doc’ Stenson. ALFIE JONES is Wizz's grandson, and a great singer and guitarist in his own right! PLEASE NOTE! UNLESS THE SITUATION GREATLY IMPROVES, THIS GIG WILL BE SEATED ONLY, NUMBERS WILL BE RESTRICTED AND COVID PRECAUTIONS WILL BE IN PLACE. PLEASE SEE OUR WEBSITE FOR THE LATEST UPDATE ON WHAT THESE WILL BE.

he talented chap who penned Hamlet once noted that “winter tames man, woman, and beast.” Well it has certainly tamed The Hamlet men recently, with a series of spatchcocked results spreading themselves across the early part of 2022 like a roadkill pigeon on the South Circular. Defeats against basement team Billericay, Chelmsford and Hungerford have cast a brumal pall over the season. But hold firm ye of faint and faltering heart, for the signs of a footballing spring are there to see; with hard fought victories in Slough, a draw against high-flying Dartford, and most emphatically a 3-1 tonking of Concord at Champion Hill. Concord are of course Canvey Island’s most senior team. But their display against the boys in pink and blue was not particularly brilleaux and they certainly didn’t feelgood as they left South East London in their executive coach, knocking back milk and alcohol, all the way back to the Thames Delta. By way of mitigation, it should be said that the Champion Hill physio room is as busy as Florence Nightingale’s cleaner at Inkerman. A busted leg here, a concussion there; the Sons of Edgar Kail are down to the barest bones squad wise. As always, the Dulwich Hamlet website at www.pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet/ is the place to be to keep up with all the latest news and to get details of all upcoming men’s and women’s team games. And you should certainly head to the Supporters Trust’s site - www.dhst.org.uk to check out the latest trends in pink and blue apparel and accessories. Until Champion Hill.
