New Food Market Comes To Lewisham
Lewisham Food Market – South East London’s newest foodie destination – to launch on Sunday 6 August. The venture is presented by the team behind Catford Food Market which picked up two new accolades at the UK Enterprise Awards earlier this month. Lewisham Council providing £16k in funding to support the launch
A new hot spot for food lovers is coming to the borough this summer. Lewisham Food Market launches on Sunday 6 August in Cornmill Gardens.
Lewisham Food Market is the second venture for the team behind Catford Food Market which received two new accolades – Best Local Food Market in South London and Food Market of the Year, London and the South East – at the UK Enterprise Awards earlier this month.
The team will be emulating their winning formula by placing local traders – who are representative of the community – centre stage at Lewisham Food Market, while also continuing the mission to reduce food mileage and promote sustainability.
Vendors confirmed for the launch include Himalayan dumplings purveyors Mandala, shuckers of the best oysters in London, Rock Oysters and Thai Fridays who will tantalise tastebuds with authentic Thai street food. Meanwhile Raastawala, stalwarts of the Catford location, will be serving up fabulous North East Indian cuisine.
Cornmill Gardens is a fully pedestrianised green space with plenty of seating for al fresco dining. It overlooks the River Ravensbourne and is opposite Lewisham’s rail and DLR stations. It is hoped this central location – just nine minutes
from central London – will broaden the market’s appeal to visitors from outside the borough too. Lewisham Council is supporting the market with £16k in funding which is being delivered over eight months. Cllr Kim Powell – Cabinet Member for Businesses, Jobs and Skills – said:
“Food brings people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds together so we’re excited to be supporting Lewisham Food Market. It’s set to be the latest jewel in the crown for our vibrant local foodie scene. We hope it follows the huge success of the award-winning Catford Food Market and helps cement the borough as one of London’s most exciting culinary destinations. We’d love to see lots of residents at the launch in August so please come, show your support and enjoy some fantastic food.”
Lewisham Food Market launches on Sunday 6 August from 10am-4pm and will be held on the first Sunday of each month thereafter, it is free to attend and dog-friendly. For more details, please visit lewishamfoodmarket.com.
Growing a Bee-friendly Garden
Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw
| Instagram @janinewinlawThere’s something lovely about a garden alive with bees industriously going about their work. They are also vital for pollinating our food, such as nuts, vegetables and fruit. But since they’re sadly in decline due to a loss of habitats and the use of pesticides, the more we can encourage them into our gardens, the better.
When it comes to the pollinator-friendly plants to provide the nectar (carbohydrates) and pollen (protein) bees need, look for single open flowers where the centre is easily accessible, rather than those with lots of petals. For the summer months opt for daisies, rudbeckia, asters, single dahlias and sunflowers, along with other summer perennials such as verbena, scabious, knautia, holllyhocks and sedum.
Also bear in mind that different bees are attracted to different flowers. For example, bumble bees and slimmer honey bees love the tiny flowers on herbs such as oregano, rosemary, lavender, thyme, nepeta and clover – my clover rich lawn is abuzz! Wool carder bumble bees like plants such as stachys (lamb’s ears) as they collect hairs from the leaves and stems of plants to build their nests while long-tongued bumble bees like tubularshaped flowers such as penstemons and foxgloves.
Ensuring you have blooms for every season will also help attract a range of different bees.
The busiest time for bees is the summer, but they tend to emerge from hibernation in March so try to include spring blossom and bulbs such as crocuses and primroses for spring nectar and native wildflower meadows are also appealing for bees. A few winter- flowering plants such as hellebores and winter honeysuckle or clematis are also helpful as some bees emerge from hibernation early in mild winters. For smaller gardens, long flowering plants such as Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ will keep the nectar coming.
Tempting as it is, try to avoid pesticide which is toxic to pollinators. It’s better to use a natural aphid spray and encourage ladybirds to keep pests down. Also provide food and water for thirsty, hungry bees by making a bee bath with a shallow bowl of water, and if you might find them on the path or lawn looking exhausted, a lid with a spoonful of sugar dissolved in two spoons of water will help revive them.
Finally, create habitats in your garden. Leave a pile of wood, branches and twigs for solitary bees that make individual nest cells for their larvae. Some species such as red mason and leafcutter bees, which pollinate fruit crops, nest in tubes or tunnels. For honey bees, companies such as Bee Kind Hives encourage sustainable bee keeping with hives that need little intervention from beekeepers.
Microwave Crème Brulee with Raspberries
Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk
If like me, you have a friend with an allotment and a lot of raspberries then beg a handful or two from them for this recipe ever. Trust me – the proof is in the pudding with this recipe, it is super easy and delicious. It works in teacups, in a big dish (be careful if using glass make sure it is heat resistant) or as small individual ramekins. Serves 4.
Ingredients
• 1 ½ cups double cream
• 3 egg yolks
• ¼ cup sugar
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• about 2 cups hot water
• 4 tablespoons of sugar (to sprinkle on top)
Method
1) Put the dish(es) you plan to use into the fridge for about an hour before you start so they will be nice and cold.
2) Microwave the cream for 3 minutes in a jug or bowl.
3) During this time, whisk the egg yolks, ¼ cup of sugar and the vanilla together until smooth.
4) Slowly pour the warm cream into the eggsugar-vanilla concoction, keep mixing throughout.
5) Pour the combined mixture into the microwavable jug or bowl.
6) Return to the microwave and cook in 2-minute bursts, whisking well at each interval. You will probably need to cook for about 5 minutes in total, just keep going (and checking it until it is almost set.
7) Take your dish(es) out of the fridge, pop a layer of raspberries in the bottom and then pour the custard over the top.
8) Cover with foil and return the dish(es) to the fridge for about an hour to allow the custard to set.
9) Remove from the fridge, sprinkle one tablespoon of sugar over the top of each dish. Place under the grill until the sugar layer crackles and turns brown or use a brulee gun if you have one!

The 4S’s: Why Work Up a Sweat?
Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com
Some of you may know that we’ve been personal trainers for eleven years. And as Personal Trainers, we have a list of four things; four daily non-negotiables. I call them the 4S’s: sweat, steps, shiver, strength. And one—or a combination—of those needs to happen every day. During our lives as PTs, quite a few of our clients mentioned that they don’t like to sweat. In fact, only a few days ago I heard this comment again which prompted this article. So, let’s talk a bit more about the benefits of sweating and why it so important.
The Benefits of Getting Sweaty
As mentioned earlier, this month I want to focus on the first of the 4S’s: sweat. First of all, what is sweat? Sweat is your body’s way of cooling you down. When your body starts to feel that it’s overheating, it starts sweating as a way to control its temperature.
Now, what could you do to break a sweat, and why would you want to? Well, sweating has many benefits such as detoxification, for example. A 2016 study* in China indicated that the levels of most heavy metals were lower in those people who exercised regularly.
Heavy metals were found in the sweat and urine with a higher concentration in the sweat, leading to the conclusion that, along with urinating, sweating is a potential method for the elimination of heavy metals.
Sweating also increases shock protein production. Heat shock proteins—or HSPs—form as our bodies react to thermal stress (unusually high or low temperatures). The positive effects of this include:
• Increased immune health
• Faster muscle recovery and repair
• Higher insulin production
Using Heat Therapy
Getting hot causes, a great number of physiological responses. Of course, I mean to a safe intensity and for the right duration. And one way to reap the benefits is with a sauna: an infrared sauna, a sauna at your gym or local health club, perhaps you have one at home. You can also get sauna
suits, much like large sleeping bags, which do up to the neck. They can be just as effective and are certainly cheaper than some other options.
Physical Activity
Alternatively, you might go for a run, or try hot yoga. And of course, physical activity releases endorphins, boosting your mood as well. The point is to bring this idea to life in a way that is achievable for you. Sweating is one of the most accessible tools for wellbeing. Something you could do every day—or alternate with the other 4S’s—to maximise your health and happiness. So, what can you do today, or one day this week, to get your sweat on?

Why Recall Fails
Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk
Recall is one of the essential dog training cues. It is not unusual to see exasperated owners anxiously speed-walking around the park repeatedly calling their dog’s name while the hound in question is nowhere to be seen. Another scenario is the dog that dances around within a few feet of the owner but somehow stays just out of range, refusing to have its lead put on. Poor recall is not only inconvenient it is also dangerous; the ability to call your dog away from something could one day save his life
Your young puppy may have aced recall in puppy class and even in the park returns like a shot when called. However, that can all change when puberty hits and suddenly there are other things out there that are way more interesting. Owners get upset and confused when their pup ignores all entreaties to return. Once not returning is a learned option, recall falls apart.
Pups are wired to stick with their perceived point of safety. Having left their mother and littermates this role is transferred to the owner. The average baby pup recalls quite easily. Owners often get lulled into a false sense of security and rather than actively setting up and practising recalls in the park and on off lead walks, they unwittingly rely on the pup’s instinct for safety. Owners often do practice recall in a class and the pup can get rather good at that, but this is just one context. The same rigour needs to be applied elsewhere too. With patience and consistent application of training it is possible to achieve a good recall, here are some general tips:
• Train regularly for the first two years minimum, do not put all your faith into what you achieve at a puppy course. Once hormones kick in at puberty the brain is overwhelmed with lots of new, rewarding information.
• Remember dogs learn context by context. Recalling in class is different to the park. Training in the park should be built from scratch too.
• If your pup has learned to return to you under highly controlled conditions in class, do not expect him to do the same after he has been free running and playing in the park for half an hour with other dogs.
• Think about the reward on offer for returning to you- is it as fun for the dog as playing with other dogs? Many youngsters will prefer play fighting with other dogs to the same old treat from its owner.
• Only ever call your dog once or twice. Repeated use of the cue reduces effectiveness.
• Ideally, every recall should be successful first time. This means the owner should judge how distracted the dog is, how far away the dog is, and for how long the dog has been separated from them (the three D’s, distance, distraction, duration).
• Use a long line. This gives you some control but use with care and supervision, it is a training tool not something for life.
• If using a line, for safety avoid extended play sessions with other dogs.
• It will be clear to most that your dog wants to run and play in the park so ensure you give them substitute play outlets they enjoy. You may need to take toys with you.
• Finally, never ever chastise your dog for not returning when you call. No dog will willingly return to a visibly frustrated or angry owner. Think about what has gone wrong and aim to put it right on the next recall.
Link Age Southwark Celebrating 30 Years of Supporting Local Older People

The exhibition showcased the breadth of the work carried out by the charity in its mission to alleviate loneliness for older people and those living with a diagnosis of dementia. The photographs – of older people the charity works with, its volunteers, staff and supporters – were taken by award-winning photographer and Link Age Southwark volunteer Nick Dolding, who originally joined the charity as a volunteer befriender.
The Mayor of Southwark, Counsellor Michael Situ told guests: “Iamparticularly gratefulfortheengagementworkthatLink AgeSouthwarkdoes, sothatolderpeoplecan continuetolivemeaningfulandfulfillinglives withintheborough.”
Link Age Southwark’s Chief Executive, Sophie Wellings, said: “One of the bestthingsaboutthisexhibitionistheamountofjoythat’sondisplayinthis room,andIhopewehaveanother30yearsofcreatingmore.”
Link Age Southwark’s 30th anniversary celebrations continue as preparations now hot up for their inaugural fundraising walk -- the Sponsored Strollathon. This fun, accessible, family-friendly walk, will take place on Sunday 10 September 2023 (11am – 3pm) in the beautiful surroundings of Dulwich Park, offering a range of distances so everyone can join in.
It’s a great opportunity for us all to get outside, get fit, spend time with friends, family and colleagues while helping Link Age Southwark raise vital funds toward alleviating loneliness and reducing social isolation for older people and those living with a diagnosis of dementia in Southwark. From 1pm there will be live music from Herne Hill-based big band The Fabulous Honeys. Register for the event and bring a picnic for some relaxation time after your stroll. Financial Matters
With Akwasi Duodu | akwasi@sterlingandlaw.com | www.sterlingandlaw.comA mortgage real life story
Analysts say that the Bank of England is caught between a rock and a hard place. They have a choice between allowing inflation to run riot or killing borrowers with ever higher interest rates. We see the numbers, but how does it real people in real life?
Carl (43) and Jenna (36) bought their twobedroom flat just as the pandemic eased in June 2021. They’d found a gorgeous two-bedroom Victorian flat in Sydenham for £675,000. It was the perfect little family home for them and their daughter of 6. They had £175,000 to put down after paying stamp duty, so only needed a mortgage of £500,000.
They had options when choosing their mortgage. As first-time buyers, it was a tossup between a two or five-year fixed rate. They opted for a two-year fixed rate not wanting to be tied into a deal for too long in case they had another child. It was going to be tight but just about affordable. The term was 25 years, the fixed rate was 1.46% and their monthly repayments were going to be £1,990 per month.
All things considered, they would be left with a cash surplus of about £1,000 every month which would probably get gobbled up by unforeseen events like socialising and eating out.
Two years went by extremely quickly. The cost-of-living crisis had bitten, meaning their cash surplus was almost non-existent. In summer 2023, they received a letter from their lender informing them that their fixed rate deal had come to an end. The mortgage now stood at £497,000 and they had 23 years left on it. If they did nothing, their mortgage would switch over to the standard variable rate, of 8.49%. This meant that their monthly repayments would jump from £1,990 to £4,057!
Carl called their mortgage broker in a panic. What could be done? Surely, they couldn’t be expected to pay £4,057 for their mortgage! Especially in this new climate where everything but their salaries had gone up! Their broker called back with bad and good news.
The bad news was that because things were so tight for them, they were effectively mortgage prisoners. This meant that the only lender who would consider them was the one they were with right now. Other lenders would decline their application on the grounds of affordability. The good news was that their current lender would consider them for a new 2-year fixed deal at 6.14%, £3,368 per month, or a 5-year fixed deal at 5.49%, £3,180 per month. Good news? It was still unaffordable!
The mortgage broker decided to contact their lender as a last resort. At over £3,000 per month, their mortgage was clearly unmanageable. Trying to sell their flat in what was now a difficult market was not a realistic option either. What could be done?
Surprisingly, their lender was sympathetic and wanted to do all they could to help. They suggested extending the mortgage term to 32 years, which could be done because of Jenna’s age. They also suggested temporarily converting half of the mortgage to interest only. Doing these two things would reduce their monthly repayments to £2,250 per month at the 5-year fixed rate.
Carl and Jenna are hoping interest rates will start falling soon, as do many people who have mortgages. If they do fall, they should be able to bring their mortgage account back to where it should be, albeit after losing a bit of ground. For now, they can keep their home and just about afford the odd night out.

10am-4pm. The first Sunday of the month, April through to December, is Feast day in West Norwood. A community event built around 100 market stalls over four ‘hubs’ around the high street. It is run almost entirely by volunteers who book the stalls and organise a full programme of free children’s activities and live entertainment. It is a farmer’s market, a craft fair, a flea market and a street food hub all rolled into one. Each monthly Feast is run by volunteers who organise free community engaging events. These range from talks on Caribbean cuisine for Black History month, a fashion show showcasing local talent and retail, art trails up and down the high street, to a Sports Feast that featured all the local organisations that promote active lifestyles. Added to this, volunteers organise a full schedule of entertainment at each Feast (from brass bands to live DJs) and plenty of fun and creative children’s activities (from sports days to mural making). https://westnorwoodfeast.com.

Horniman Museum, 100 London Road, Forest Hill, SE23 3PQ www.horniman.ac.uk.
The programme consists of 30 unique teaching steps. It teaches neat, cursive (joined up) handwriting in a simple and logical way, using a step-by-step approach. There are minimum curls and loops with no ‘lead-in’ flicks, which often confuse and slow down speed. The programme has been developed to be highly structured, to help your child learn the correct pencil grip, posture and letter formation. It teaches capital letters, simple punctuation and numbers. The unique Magic Link® font motivates learners and makes handwriting easy and enjoyable.
