In ancient China, the emperors of every dynasty believed in reincarnation and the afterlife, so when they died, they buried with gold and silver jewelry in the land at all costs, hoping to still enjoy the glory and wealth in the next life. There’s a mysterious profession was born because of it, that is the tomb raider. The people of the Yuan Dynasty didn't have a living, but the emperors and generals were still decayed. The protagonist Jie is an ordinary person born in poverty, but he is kind and brave, determined to rob the rich and help the poor, so he became a tomb robber through his own efforts. When Jie entered the largest tomb in history, he found that there was not only himself. There were two other tomb rubbers are exploring the tomb as well. When they finished a desperate fight, they realized that all of them had the same ideal of helping the weak. So when the court was about to eliminate them together, the three tomb robbers decided united to fight against them, and finally justice defeated evil. Jie has become the leader of all tomb rubbers, they opposed autocracy and created a new era of equality and freedom.

JIE In order to design a character who was born poor but brave, I hope that the elements of the character can be integrated with the character of Japanese samurai and ancient Chinese swordsmen. The straw sandals and swords represent the protagonist who was born in poverty but wise and brave.

Based on the reference studies, I tried to draw different silhouettes, so that I have a basic concept of the character's image, movement and temperament. Agility, youth, and mystery are my expectations for this role.

The design of the stone lion on the chest can allow the protagonist put the stolen treasure directly into it safely.

I use dark gray to increase the mystery of the character, and the golden color indicates a bright future for the character.

I tried to combine weapons and digging tools into one, so that it can attack and dig the ground on the other. Regarding armor, I hope to restore the real ancient armor as much as possible.

DIGGER In order to design a follower pet for the protagonist to support his life, work and fight, I chose to do some studies about pangolins, and I hope that I can make a combination with between pangolins and Chinese calligraphy.

The pangolin is a symbol of auspiciousness in Chinese culture and has a very special meaning, representing wealth and bravery.
This monster is designed to match the protagonist's digging ability. On the one hand, the sharp claws can help the owner to robber the tomb, and on the other hand, it can also cooperate with the owner to fight.

OLD MASTER When the protagonist enters the tomb, I hope that an old man can lead his way. This old man may have been a tomb robber as well, but he cannot continue to fulfill his ideals. He needs a young man to help him, to Inherit his experience and spirit. Therefore, I tried to integrate Chinese Taoist culture into the design of the character to increase his style of wisdom.

I made various attempts on the character's temperament, and finally I gave up on designing any offensive weapons for the character and turned to make him a life-rich character for the story. So in terms of size, I try to make him shorter, and try to minimize the sharp parts on the props.

I try to use gourds, fabric and straw sandals to synapse the character's indisputable attitude.

The highly saturated colors are to highlight his cheerful and optimistic nature.

YUAN Yuan is the third person who appears in the story. I hope he is a person who gains freedom from slaves through self-liberation. So I searched a lot of information about accient slaves, hoping to use the elements to design such a character image for Yuan.

I hope to suggest his slave temperament and identity through the mottled armor and rough shovel.

He used to be a slave, so the shovel is his weapon, coupled with the fangs, and the continuous polishing of the iron part make the attack power stronger.

TOMB KEEPER There is a patron saint in the depths of the tomb. Through the investigation and study of dragon elements in ancient Chinese buildings and sculptures, I seek to create a dragon image based on troditional Chinese style.

Through the drawing of the silhouette, I hope that the image of the dragon I designed can express the majesty of the guardian while also conveying a certain softness. Because the emperor’s tomb may be full of people’s blood, but the guardian role should be neutral.

Most dragon images are brutal, but I wish to add some softness with the slender body.

TOMB DESIGN There is an old Chinese saying: The most dangerous place is also the safest place. So I tried to give the tomb a new concept, which is to arrange it in a public place, so the ancient pagoda became my first choice for design.

After trying to draw the silhouettes of ancient pagodas in various cultural backgrounds, my thinking gradually became more and more clear, and a temple with a strong oriental feeling gradually appeared in my brain.

In Buddhism, the Buddha is the entrance to the soul and the entrance to heaven. People living in real life think that heaven is rich and full of gold and silver treasures. Therefore, in my design, the Buddha implies the door to the tomb. It also implies the direction to treasure. The sitting posture of the Buddha is not only meditating but also waiting, waiting for someone who knows how to find the treasure through details. It is also could be a trap, so that the person who enters may get rich or lose it.
