In year 2084, Earth’s desertification has reached to a horrifying percentage of 90%. Humankind tries their final luck to bring back the green, gathering elite scientists worldwide to come up with a liquified catalyst designed to accelerate the growth of plants. However, an unexpected leakage to the catalyst happens; a nightmare spuns across the globe, bringing a mutation that slowly morphs living creatures’ bodies into raging plant-form monsters, hence splitting the society into two halves, turning friends into foes, as neither side is willing to accept the other…

REFERENCE I LING Ling’s character design inspiration mainly came from South American ancient tribal cultures. I took emphasis on the unique skin textures from the people and tried to integrate it into the leaf like structures on Ling’s body.

FACE VARIATIONS To decide how exotic his appearance will be was interesting; lastly I kept a light skin but also an eastern feeling on his features.
OUTFIT VARIATIONS I tried different color combinations firstly from seasons—but then I realized giving him a body covered in red leaves would lose the green impression of this character; so I merged the maroon into his body parts instead.

REFERENCE I ARKUS Arkus’s character design came from pilots during WWII and steampunk fashion from the industralism period. I wanted him to be a representation from a post-acolapyse, yet still technological wise time period, where people are still fighting for a better future that seems long lost to them.

OUTFIT VARIATIONS Finding the best color match for Arkus was tricky—it couldn’t be too bright or saturated—lastly I lightened the jacket to a leathery touch and emphasized the metallic finish of his mechanic arm.

ARKUS’S RIFLE
PROPS DESIGN I started off with basic outer designs of rifles; to pick out the right shape for Arkus’s gun and to merge it with an eastern design, I took inspiration from traditional japanese textures.

MONSTER DESIGN I wanted to include a non-human creature in the story, but not something too monstrous. Morphing parts of the animal into plants was a fun process.

REFERENCE I chose my story’s environment setting to be post-apocalyptical, and researched on city structures after major wars, which consisted of debris from fallen buildings, crashed airplanes, water deprived earth grounds and desert like climates.

REFERENCE I ARKUS’S RESEARCH LAB I started off with researching plant-based living structures of different cultures, such as Indiana teepee tents, and also grass, bamboo-made structures from other civilizations. I wanted to aim for an unusual esearch lab impression, as I thought having an exotic exterior shape, but with a steampunk industrial inside would be interesting.

ARKUS’S RESEARCH LAB Since this is a post-apocalypse setting, I couldn’t make the research lab too futuristic. Therefore I went for a ‘built out of scratches’ design, to show that despite the environment itself being destroyed, the peopleincluding Arkus himself hasn’t completely given up hope yet. I used an organic style for the exterior; although it looks like a hut, but the walls are made of metal peels, one for sturdiness, and also to ward off sandstorms. The top of the huts is designed to collect solar energy and generate it into power used for electricity, etc.

ENVIRONMENT DESIGN - ARKUS’S LAB (EXTERIOR) Arkus’s lab is consisted of a combination of different little huts. These huts were once warehouses and storage places for farmers that used to grow crop in this area. I thought giving the exterior looks an authentic native feeling would be interesting, in comparison to its steampunk style interior design. Though looking like huts, the walls are reconstructed using bricks and metals for a firmer stand.

ENVIRONMENT DESIGN - ARKUS’S LAB ( INTERIOR ) Arkus’s lab originally was an abandoned warehouse. I wanted to give it a historic feeling, therefore keeping parts of the interior brick walls, whilst other parts merged with machines that Arkus moved in altogether. The light source is mainly consisted of outside light coming from the windows and the old lightbulbs hanging on the walls.

PROP DESIGN - THE REVIVOR T tried three different color variations for the core of Arkus’s lab, whether to go for a steampunk stylized color system, or a metallic or even a fading rusted copper feel. The machine is designed to keep the vulnerable plants alive, and at the same time extracting elements from them aiding Arkus’s research. For one of the designs I thought of giving the inside an incinerating glow, but I still feel that keeping the plants’ organic color would be a better choice, thus keeping the green.

ENVIRONMENT DESIGN - LING’S TEMPLE Ling’s living place would be somewhere very different from where Arkus is at. There is a mysterious touch to it; it is hidden amongst cliffs and rocks in a mountain area not too far from the city Arkus is at. It is contstructed above the rocks—though looking like it’s floating, it sits on the gap of the cliffs below, with the little bridge astonishingly holding partially the temple’s weight.

STORYBOARD PART I Arkus and Ling originally were lab colleagues working together on a bio experiment. However, right before their final check, an accidental leakage of the bio content contaminates Ling’s hands, thus turning him into a plant. Unwilling to let his friend face the same fate, Ling runs away and vanishes from Arkus’s sight. He leaves the city before letting the mutation spread out, yet not knowing that it has already break out elsewhere.

STORYBOARD PART II The breakout was worst than expected. Though contaminated himself, Arkus transforms into a mutation hunter, hunting down the mutated beasts attacking the city as an act of redemption for the bio accident. Whilst working on to stop his mutated from further evolving, he unexpectiedly comes across a figure that seems like his lost old friend. More than stunned to actually see Ling’s appearance, Arkus accidentally pulls the trigger of his gun and shoots Ling, who seemed to be in an attack position aiming at Arkus.

STORYBOARD PART III But Ling was trying to protect Arkus. Realizing his wrong move, Arkus reels back, only in time to see a mutated beast lunging towards him. Ling throws out his fist and saves Arkus just in time, despite his injured and bleeding shoulder. Arkus realizes further that all these years Ling has been overwatching him in the dark, that their friendship never ended, and Ling did not run away from him due to fright the day of the leakage breakout. From their long talk, Arkus decides to help Ling bring back the society they were once in, and they eventually succeed.
