The Angola Pennysaver has proudly been serving our community for over 93 years. As you can imagine, we’ve experienced several changes in technology, production and in the printing during that time. For the last 12 years, we have sourced our printing with the Buffalo News. They certainly have done a great job for us.

As you may be aware, they recently ceased printing in Buffalo and have moved production to Cleveland, Ohio.

With that, we made the decision to source our printing through a different family owned company, with more local roots.

You will notice a slight change in size and layout; however, our mission to provide our community with local events, uplifting news and bridging the gap between merchants and consumers has not waivered. We take great pride and serving our community and helping fellow small businesses, schools and local governments to be able to share valuable information to you, our readers.

Paul Burns Named AJS Kind Kid for October

Paul Burns is being recognized as A.J. Schmidt Elementary School’s Kind Kid for October! Adults at school have noticed Paul helping friends get motivated to do their best work. Paul is described as “a very sweet guy,” always respectful and kind. Paul says it feels good to be kind like his Dad and Mom have taught him. Paul’s best advice is to always share, don’t be mean, and say “please” or “thank you.”

Paul spends his free time playing Roadblox with his cousin. Math is Paul’s favorite subject at school. Paul doesn’t yet know what he wants to do when he grows up, but with people skills like his, there are so many options. When asked what he would do to make A.J. Schmidt a kinder place, Paul says he feels A.J. is already the best school. We are honored Paul is part of the A.J. Schmidt family.

Darlene A. Prizel (nee Phillips) of Forestville, NY passed away, Tuesday October 3, 2023, peacefully with family by her side. She is now reunited with her beloved husband Raymond L Prizel Sr. and grandson James Haines. Dear mother of Ronald (Lisa), Raylene (Dave), Raymond Jr. (Kimberley) and Richard (Kimberly). Gramma to Jacob (Allison), Erica (Mike), Joshua (Laura), Elizabeth (Chris), Cody, Brock, Shawn, Brandon, Kylie, Evan and Cooper. Great Gram to Jessie, Hannah, Ava Lyn, Olivia, Jaiden, Jessina, Greyson, Hattie and Henry. She was born in California to the late Clara and R.B Phillips being raised with her siblings Tom (Cheryl) and the late Robert, Butch (Wilma) and Shyla; also survived by her brother in law Eddie (late Bernalee) many nieces, nephews and cousins. After serving her country, as a nurse, Darlene moved to Angola, NY with her family where she worked and retired from the New Era Hat Factory. Even in her spare time she would sew and crochet making hand towels, blankets and quilts for her family. These treasures will provide us warmth for many years to come. Earlier this year, John Munch, on behalf of the Munch Family had donated a packet of old black and white photos to our historical society. We had them on display at our historical display at the Brant Summer Festival held in June. The photos, eleven in total, were of various cars and trucks once owned by John Walker. John Walker, native of Farnham, N.Y. was a well-known personality of our community as a store owner, Mayor of Farnham, and early historian for the town of Brant. John Walker had quite the collection of vintage vehicles, which included the 1917 Willys Overland, a 1929 Willys White Night, and a 1921 Maxwell just to name a few.

We were curious about the 1917 car pictured here today and thought maybe our readers would be as well - so we decided to investigate further. Wikipedia helped us out: It seems that John North Willys, born on October 25, 1873 in Canandaigua, New York, is considered an American automotive pioneer. He actually began his career as a manufacturer of bicycles. “In 1908 John N. Willys bought the Overland Automotive Division of Standard Wheel Company and in 1912 renamed it Willys-Overland Motor Company. From 1912 to 1918, Willys was the second largest producer of automobiles in the United States after Ford Motor Company. In 1917 they produced 130,000 cars.” American Cars. The company, headquartered in Toledo, Ohio, became known for producing jeeps during the WWII era. The company later became the Kaiser Manufacturing Company and in 1969 was acquired by American Motors.

If we recall correctly, we believe that Stocker & Houston Auto Sales, located in the Village of Angola, N.Y. in the early 1920’s and 30’s, once sold these Willy’s vehicles to our local community.

The back of this photo is captioned “1917 Willys Overland at John Walker’s ‘Ranch’, Farnham, NY 7-25-1965”. The Walker home was located on Railroad Avenue. Look closely and you can see the railroad tracks in the background.

Farnham Elementary School 1952; Grade 6 Students

It was the end of March 2023, when Kristen from the Angola Pennysaver contacted us. It seems that Mr. Darwin John had stopped in to share some photos with her. She asked him if it was ok to share with the Brant-Farnham Historical Society and he responded “Yes, Please!” We are so happy that he agreed to share the photos! We did try to contact Mr. John, as he had mentioned that he could also provide names of some of his classmates. His voice mailbox was full, so we couldn’t leave a message. We haven’t had a chance to try again lately, however, we are hopeful that sometime soon, we will be able to name some of friends who are pictured with him in this adorable photo! Those smiling faces are just priceless!

Miss Hull's 2nd grade was very busy researching their family history at the beginning of the school year to make their own family trees! These kids put so much effort into their projects, that it's clear they're very proud of their families.
