Project: Keep Evans Warm & Fed
It’s that time of year again. The cold air is returning and the holidays are fast approaching. In an effort to assist and support those in need and residing in the Town of Evans, Most Precious Blood Church along with Operation Good Neighbor (OGN) will be conducting Project: Keep Evans Warm and Fed. This project is now underway and will end December 22. Each year the need increases and this year is no different. OGN never has enough warm clothing to distribute and they feed an average of 350 residents per week. Collected will be winter clothing, non-perishable foods and paper goods. We will accept winter coats, gloves, boots, sneakers and hats in all sizes, colors and styles. Children’s sizes are very popular. We only ask that any clothing donated be clean and in good condition. Food must be within shelf life and we will accept dry and canned goods with examples consisting of soups, cereals, pasta and vegetables. Baby food is in great demand. During the holidays, frozen turkey breasts for families of one or two are needed. Current programs of assistance will not provide personal care items such as toothbrushes, Kleenex, paper towels disposable diapers, toilet paper and baby wipes so these will be collected also. September 10 will now be known as Chiavetta’s Barbeque and Catering Day in the Town of Brant and the State of New York, as named by proclamations by the Brant Town Board and Assemblyman DiPietro! At the September Brant
meeting the
family was honored for their 70 years in business. Supervisor DeCarlo thanked the Chiavetta family for their hard work, dedication, and support of our community. Chiavetta’s has been a part of many of our summer dinners, weddings, and celebrations. Further, they are leaders in Brant through their community efforts and employing generations of Brant residents. Peter and Kathleen Chiavetta accepted the proclamation from Councilwoman Giancarlo. Assemblyman DiPietro was also in attendance to honor them with a Proclamation from the State of New York. He noted it is the highest honor to be granted by an elected official as it requires vetting by Albany officials to ensure it is nonpartisan and worthy of recognition. It recognized the family-owned Chiavetta’s as a true cornerstone of Western New York for generations. Additionally, Kim Peck, a representative of Senator Gallivan’s office presented the New York State Senate Award to Peter and Kathleen for 70 years of outstanding contributions and dedication to the growth and prosperity of their community.

Lauren Affronte completes WNY Sophomore Externship Experience at Cytocybernetics
Lauren Affronte of Lake View, NY, completed UB’s WNY Sophomore Externship Experience at Cytocybernetics. The WNY Sophomore Externship Experience is a new program that matches local college sophomores with paid extern opportunities at Western New York’s top companies.
UB is New York State’s flagship and the largest and most comprehensive institution in the State University of New York system.
The new externship program, run by the Startup and Innovation Collaboratory (CoLab), is funded by the Prentice Family Foundation as part of its long working relationship with the university and allows students to start preparing for the workforce earlier in their college careers. Participating students earned $4,000, course credit and experience exploring career paths and opportunities throughout WNY.
“The WNY Sophomore Externship Experience began as an idea to address important issues retaining more top talent in the region, better-preparing students with the social and technical skills they need for the current workforce,”
Provost A. Scott Weber says. “It helps students forge the connections and networks they need to be successful, and enables students to spend their summer gaining experience that will benefit their futures, regardless of their financial situation.”
A total of 47 students were selected as the first cohort of the program, which also allowed sophomores from other Western New York universities, as well as college sophomores elsewhere, as long as they graduated from a local high school. The experience concluded July 31 with a celebration at Hayes Hall where the students could showcase what they learned working at one of two dozen companies and organizations across the Buffalo region.
