FARMERS MARKET

Because of the expected rainy weather, Memorial Day Services, were moved from the Memorial Park at the Brant Four Corners and were instead held inside the courtroom of the Brant Town Hall. The seats were filled, and the service began at 9:00AM with welcoming remarks by Town of Brant Supervisor Mark Decarlo. Fr. Frank Kadryna of Parish of our Lady, PNRCC of Brant, N.Y. provided us with prayers at the beginning and end of the program. The guest speaker on this day, was Operation Specialist Senior Chief Neil I. Ross. The speech given by Sr. Chief Neil Ross was moving and passionate as he was speaking in remembrance of those who had made the ultimate sacrifice for our Country and our freedoms. Freedoms which we all enjoy each day. He asked us: “How many times in our lives have we stood, facing a flag in the corner of a classroom, and dutifully recited the “Pledge of Allegiance”?” He continued; “After a while, the words come automatically, but their meaning has become lost in shear, mindless repetition. We mechanically recite a chant of thirty-one words, without fully focusing on “what we are promising or to whom”! Thirty-one words which affirm the values and freedom that the American Flag represents; are cited while facing the flag as a pledge of each American’s loyalty to their county.” Sr. Chief Neil then provided us with simple and clear but powerful explanations for each line of the pledge. After defining each line, he then requested that we all join with him and reaffirm OUR promise of loyalty to OUR country, in honor of those brave men and women, who sacrificed so much for America and its values. And so, we all stood. Encouraged by his fiery speech, we spoke from our hearts reciting a pledge which we have said many times, but recited this time, with a clearer understanding and sincere, strong voices: “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation, under God, Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all”. Sr. Chief Neil Ross closed with a reminder that “Memorial Day is the MOST expensive holiday on the calendar. This day is in honor of those who paid in life and blood, whose moms never saw them again, whose dads wept in private, whose wives raised kids alone and whose kids only remember them from pictures. This isn’t simply a day off. This is a day to remember.” He said: ”Others paid for your FREEDOM. God Bless you all and God bless America!” It was truly an amazing speech!

Following Neil’s speech, we were all asked to go outside, where, with the leadership of Joe Tomlinson, the Honor Guard from the American Legion Newcomb Long Post 928 provided the traditional 21-gun Salute. The sorrowful sound of Taps immediately followed the salute, and the US Flag was lowered and then set at half-mast.

Afterwards, refreshments were available compliments of the Town of Brant. The Farnham Fire Department would host their annual Chicken Barbeque beginning at Noon at their Fire Hall.

Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society

On Memorial Day May 27th, the Honor Guard of the American Legion Newcomb Long Post 928 presented their 21 Gun Salute, followed by the playing of Taps.

"So this is my challenge to you, Class of 2024 - to dare mighty things together," said Leshin. "You certainly inherit an imperfect world. A planet, a society, with flaws. But I have faith in you.

"You have the vision. You have the intelligence and the drive. And if you can you think big, pursue audacious ideas, and do so with passion and commitment, mind-blowing things are possible."
