We had a phone call recently from Farnham resident Maggie Borowski inquiring about the Erie Preserving Company (Farnham Plant). After her call (as promised) we did a little investigating. Reviewing an 1880 map of the village, we located the Erie Preserving Company on Railroad Avenue behind Pius Schwert’s (later L.H. Schwert’s) store in lot 83. Checking the 1889 town of Brant Assessment book, we found 30 acres recorded for the Erie Preserving Company in lot #83. (The property taxes were $52.62 for those of you who may be curious!) We have a drawing in our archives of the Farnham Plant of 1899, which depicts an extensive “campus” of buildings and warehouses and also shows the railroad trains tracks on either side of this large canning operation. Sadly, it was that same year of 1899 when a fire destroyed much of the bustling village of Farnham. An excerpt from the “BUFFALO EXPRESS” newspaper of September 25, 1899, describes the “GREAT FIRE OF FARNHAM” and its devastation to the village and to the Erie Preserving Company. It was written: “Sept. 18, The village of Farnham was visited this morning by a fire which destroyed nearly $250,000 worth of property. The fire was discovered in the rear of Louis Schwert’s barn about 2:15 o’clock 1880 Map of the Village of Farnand spread rapidly to adjoining buildings. Thirty two buildings ham; the arrow shows the location in all were burned and very little of the contents were saved. of the Erie Preserving Company The large plant of the Erie Preserving Company, occupying nearly 1,000 acres of ground, between the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern and Nickel Plate tracks, was a total loss, together with a large stock of canned goods and all the latest improved machinery. The loss is nearly $200,000, fairly insured. This being the busy canning season, the inability to fill thousands of orders with promptness will produce further loss to the company. The Erie Preserving Company established its business in Farnham in 1875 and the enterprise has rapidly grown to the extent of becoming one of the largest canning factories in the State. The factory was under the direction of Supt. Adam Wode, to whom much of its prosperity was due. The destruction of this factory throws hundreds of persons out of employment and is a loss to the farmers in the marketing of produce.” In a later news clipping regarding the fire of 1899, it was mentioned that the village did not have a fire department. The clipping also noted that about 500 persons lost their jobs at the Erie Preserving Company’s Farnham plant because of the fire. Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society ___________
