Erik Pawelski Learns About Sustainability & Justice in Erie
Erik Pawelski of Lake View was one of ten students who completed a weeklong service-immersion in Erie, PA during the college’s Winter Service Week in early January, 2020. Pawelski is a 2022 Biology major. The purpose of the college’s Service-Immersion experiences is to increase student awareness of the world. Students challenge themselves to live simply, to value relationships that they make, to engage their faith and spirituality and to dig for the truth behind the injustices. The students stayed at the monastery of the Benedictine Sisters of Erie, a group of Catholic, religious women who live together in a monastery and commit their lives to presence and witness by working for sustainability and justice. Students experienced the sisters’ daily life of prayer and participated each day in their ministries throughout the city. Volunteer opportunities included education centers for adults and children, a community center for disabled adults, after-school programs for underprivileged children, a children’s art house, soup kitchens, and food banks. The students spent their evening with the Sisters reflecting on the experiences of the day. The annual trip to Erie is one of three domestic serviceimmersions arranged by Campus Ministry and offered during Winter Service Week (WSW). During the summer, students can also travel abroad for an international service-immersion. Whether domestic or international, all immersion experiences are designed to reinforce the Jesuit concept of accompaniment. Contributed by Canisius College __________

Karen C. Wasmund (nee Drescher) of Angola, NY, entered into eternal rest January 29, 2020 at age 76. She was the beloved wife of 57 years of Ronald C. Wasmund; mother of Kimberley Sue (Paul) Heath, Tamara Lynn Wasmund, Dawn Marie (Karl) Wasmund-Ringer and Amy Margaret (William) Seiders; sister of Thomas (Katherine) Drescher; sisterin-law of Pamela (Wallace) Jaroszewski, Nancy (late Victor) Musielak, Barb Cabic, Sharon (late Gerald) Wasmund and the late Neil Wasmund; daughter of the late Franklin and Norma Drescher; grandmother of 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchilden; also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Karen grew up in East Aurora and graduated from East Aurora High School. She met her husband, Ron, at Crystal Beach Amusement Park, Ontario. They were the owners and operators of the Leisureland Amusement Park, Hamburg in the late 1960’s through early 1970’s. Karen operated her own crafting business, “The Family Affair”, with her daughters for over 30 years. They were vendors for 25 years at the “Christmas In The Country” event in Hamburg, NY. Karen was very active with the Lake Erie Beach Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary as a 40 year member, serving as Historian, Recording Secretary and Chairwoman to many committees and fund-raising events. She was also with the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Firemen and Ladies Auxiliary since 1988, serving as President, Vice President, Director and 15 years as Recording Secretary. She was also instrumental in the formation of a joint scholarship awarded annually by the Southwestern Association Ladies Auxiliary. Karen volunteered with Girl Scouts, 4-H, Meals on Wheels, VBS at St. John Lutheran Church, Angola and was a retired school bus attendant with Lake Shore Central Schools. Safety Fencing and Soil Scraping at the High School
Phase 2 of LS Central School District’s Capital Project Began
Phase 2 of Lake Shore Central School District’s Capital Project began in early January. The Capital Project is designed to address important repairs, renovations, and improvements to district buildings and grounds. Phase 2 began on January 1 with a new traffic pattern at Lake Shore Middle School. The existing front building entrance, parking lot, and drop off loop are closed for construction and the temporary Main Entrance is located in the back of the school. Crews have started putting up temporary walls in Lake Shore Middle School to block off the construction areas. This allows crews to work quietly, quickly, and efTemporary Walls by the Middle ficiently without disrupting School Auditorium the school day. Phase 2 construction at Lake Shore High School began on February 3. Crews have started scraping surface soil in preparation for new technology classrooms and instruction areas, as well as an athletic entrance with a concession area and indoor restrooms for athletic events. Miss Nordblum was born and raised in the village of Farnham. She attended grade school in Farnham, high school in Silver Creek and received her teaching certificate and Bachelor’s Degree at Fredonia. String Quartet Performs at the Evans Senior Center
As part of our on-going Intergenerational Partnership Program, the Evans Senior Center was pleased to welcome a string quartet of local young musicians this past December. Nick Chiappetta, as part of his Eagle Scout project, put this group together to entertain our seniors with festive holiday music. After the professional quality concert, these young musicians sat and had lunch with the seniors. This interaction was priceless – feeding the soul as well as the body! We thank Nick Chiappetta for his active community spirit, his years of participation in the Boy Scouts, and his choice of our Senior Center in helping to achieve his Eagle Scout status. Evans Historical Society Holds Their Annual Dinner at the First Church of Evans
The Evans Historical Society held their annual dinner and installation of officers at the First Church of Evans, Sturgeon Point Road in Derby, on January 27, 2020. Dennis Kingan, a director of the society, was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Pastor Stephen Ridge, of the First Church of Evans gave a most reflective Invocation before all enjoyed a delicious dinner by Cala’s Catering. After dinner the following officers were installed by Town of Evans Supervisor-Mary Hosler: Caryl Youngers as both President and Treasurer and Brigitte Boyer and Mary Jayne Ginnitti as Co-Secretaries. Directors of the society installed were: Dennis Kingan, Rick LaClair, Gene Martin, Judy Groh Smith, Shirley Pfalzgraf and Charlotte Moss. Although not present at the dinner; Kathy Allen as Vice President and Sally Needham as Director will be installed at a later date. The evening also included speeches by Keith Young, Town Historian and Caryl Youngers, President. A fun “Evans Top Ten Quiz/Trivia” was prepared by Dennis Kingan and one of the ten questions was: “What Evans Resident was Drafted by the Detroit Lions?” (See end of this article for the answer.) We thoroughly enjoyed this pop history test! Jacqueline Haderer, Angola Library Trustee, donated a lovely hand-made crocheted afghan for the night’s raffle - which was won by Edward Conboy Jr. Judy Woodman made all of the amazing table decorations and Jack Kuebler was acknowledged for his printing of the society’s raffle tickets, membership cards and monthly meeting reminders. Most certainly, a delightful time was had by all! We would be remise if we did not share a bit of historical information regarding this exquisite church and venue. A few years back, Kathy Allen wrote and submitted details to the Evans Historical Society’s newsletter publication David Evans Gazette; [Editor: John Claghorn II (aka Gifford Swyers)]. Included in the April 2018 edition was the following: “The First Church of Evans was organized at Jerusalem Corners on July 4, 1818 by Rev. John Spencer, a circuit minister. There were 12 original members. In early 1822, the congregation met and organized under the name First Congregational Church and Society, Evans, First Church of Evans. During the early years services were held in two school houses in the area. The first church building was dedicated in December 1835. The church was formally incorporated under the name The First Church of Evans in August 1912. A fire on February 29, 1914 totally destroyed the church building. A new church structure was built and dedicated on February 28, 1915, remaining as a house of worship today. The church campus has been designated a New York State Historical Site as well as a National Historical Site.” The First Church of Evans celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2018.
