Larry Warren VanEtten, Jr.
Larry Warren VanEtten, Jr., formerly of Derby, New York, moved to Tennessee ten years ago, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Morristown Hamblen Healthcare System in Tennessee. He was 56. Larry was a loving son, husband, dad and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his son: Mathew Gilbert; maternal grandparents: Catherine and Edward Miller, paternal grandparents: Andrew and Marion VanEtten; brother: Edward VanEtten; aunt: Diane Summerville; and uncle: John Miller. He is survived by his wife: Lisa VanEtten; daughter: Nina (Thomas) Polk; mother: Dora Frances VanEtten, father: Larry Warren VanEtten, Sr.; grandchildren: Matalynn and Braylynn Gilbert, Allison, Emily, Thomas, Joshua Polk. Sister-inlaw: Stacy VanEtten, nephew: Edward VanEtten, and several aunts, uncles and cousins. A Celebration of life service will be held on July 21st at JP’s Pub, 1986 Lakeview Road, Lakeview, NY, from 12 Noon until 4:00 PM. Arrangements by Mayes Mortuary, Morristown, TN.

“Christmas Card Station” Pictorial Postmark at the Brant Post Office
The Brant-Farnham Historical Society initiated an idea of offering three individual pictorial postmarks at three local Post Offices to help celebrate the Christmas season. David Tempestoso, Postmaster of the Farnham, Brant and Angola offices, is always supportive of the historical society projects - so, with his approval and that of the USPS, the pictorial cancel dates were set. The Brant Post Office was scheduled for December 20th, 2018. The Brant, N.Y. pictorial postmark was comprised of a simple card/envelope design which included a geometric Christmas tree with a star on top. It was announced in the December 20th edition of the postal bulletin issued by the USPS on-line. During the 30 day period that the pictorial postmark was available, Carrie “Christmas Card Station” McDonough, PSE at the Brant Postmark - Dec. 20th at the Brant, PO, received mailed in requests N.Y. Post Office. Carrie also received an international request - the hand-written note inside read in part as follows: “...Hello from Western Canada! Could you please hand-cancel our postcard cover with your awesome Holiday Postmark and sent it back to us?...” Receiving notes such as this along with the requests makes the project all the more fun. Carrie is enthusiastic about the special cancels! (She really does love them!) She has participated in at least three cancel events at the Brant PO: “Flossie Field”, “Brant’s 178th Anniversary” and the most recent “Christmas Card” cancel. During the first 2-1/2 hours that the post office was open on December 20th, Carrie reported that she issued 212 cancels! Bob Kuhn was the first one to stop in and obtain the special “Christmas Card Station” postmark. Edward Gerecki also stopped in. He visited for a while and mentioned how much he enjoys collecting all the local cancels. As part of the day’s festivities, the Brant-Farnham Historical Society had a Christmas cookie and treat hospitality table set up for the enjoyment of those visiting. The Brant PO has a fun tradition that helps to commemorate each of the special pictorial cancels they issue. On the actual date of the cancel at the Brant PO, a notebook is available for all the visitors to sign. This is a great idea that originated about 30 years ago with then Postmaster Vincent Fininzio and it has carried on through today. Each person’s signature becomes a permanent record of our town’s postal history for current and future generations of history buffs to enjoy. 44 visitor signatures were added to the book for this past December 20th event! (Keep in mind that the Post office is only open for 4 short hours per day!) When the 30 days of the postmark’s availability ended, Carrie informed us that a grand total of 329 “Christmas Card Station ”, Brant, N.Y. pictorial cancels had been issued. Caring and Sharing
For the past 16 years, , the Lakeshore Association of Christian churches (representing 12 local churches) has sponsored Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day dinner, which in the true spirit of sharing and caring are free and open to the public. Each year, each dinner is enjoyed by over 100 people who may or may not have any other place for dinner those days. At both dinners, a free will offering is accepted, but not required. Prior to these dinners, the L.A.C.C. selects 2 local, not for profit, organizations to pass these generous donations along to. This year’s offerings went to Operation Good Neighbor, and Cradle Beach Camp. The people in the pictures are just a tiny part of the army of volunteers, some regulars at each dinner, some who just show up and want to help. Without these volunteers, who care enough to give up a few hours of their Thanksgiving and Christmas days to share these traditions with others, neither of these meals would be possible. We found this photo in the packet of 1958 Brant Strawberry Festival Parade photos donated by the Russell and Marie Dispense family to the Brant-Farnham Historical Society. The “Tonawanda Indians” float (entry #2), “was one of the winning floats” according the festival program booklet published in the following year of 1959. The other listed winning float entrants were: Brant Implement Service and Norge Sales & Service. This parade scene was captured on film while standing across from the Brant Fire hall, looking towards “the light” at the Brant four corners. The apartment building you see near the corner is still a familiar landmark in the town of Brant and is owned by the Pero family. Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society ___________

The Brant Little Loop Football “VIKINGS” pose for their team photo. The 1968 program book notes: “BRANT VIKINGS - Peewee Division of TYRO Football Conference of Western New York. The maximum age limit is 10 years and the weight limit is 90 lbs. equipped.” We thought this would be a fun photo considering that the Super Bowl celebrations are just around the corner. Not all, but quite a few of the young men pictured are from Brant, N.Y. The team’s home field was and to this day remains at the Brant Town Park.
