Lake Shore Freshmen Learn Social Media Safety

Many of us spend a considerable amount of time on social media every single day, but students tend spend even more time than most. According to Common Sense Media, a nonprofit organization promoting safe technology and media for children, teens spend an average of nine hours a day online, compared to six hours for children 8-12; Adults spend an average of 136 minutes a day. Because of this, students in Lake Shore’s Class of 2023 are learning about the impact that social media has on both their daily lives and their futures.

Students in the Freshman Seminar at Lake Shore spent a lot of time learning about the dangers and consequences of their behavior online. The power of words and how they can be either helpful or harmful have been a big discussion during this lesson.

Doug Tubinis, Evans Police Officer and Lake Shore School Resource Officer, joined the conversion and gave students his perspective on social media.

Officer Tubinis described the consequences of cyberbullying and shared stories about hackers and online predators. He explained that what we do on the internet never truly goes away. Students were shocked to hear about the very real-life consequences that have occured as a result of past online behaviors.

Lake Shore Central School District believes that learning social media safety is a proactive step to avoiding negative outcomes in the future. The goal of these lessons is to arm students with knowledge and empower them to make smart choices in the future.

Our review of a 1970 Brant Strawberry Festival booklet provided us with this photo of the “STARS” of the 1969 Brant Strawberry Festival (previous year activity was usually included in the current year booklets). Pictured are (L-R) BACK: Mr. Peter Pero, Outstanding Citizen, 1969, Miss Kathy Barefoot, 1969 Firemen’s Queen. FRONT: Edward Hamm, 1969 Prince, Heidi Datzer, 1969 Strawberry Queen and Rosemary Mecca, 1969 Princess. The Brant Strawberry Festival was in existence from 1957 thru and including 1970. The last festival booklet we have in our historical archives was issued in 1970. From this same booklet we learn that on YOUTH DAY of the festival, there were games for all groups ages 5 through 14. “The Prince and Princess were selected by their sportsmanship, conduct, and participation in activities”. Activities included the 25, 50 and 100 Yard Dash, Wheelbarrow Races, Sack Races, a Balloon Toss, Ball Throw and Tug of War. Winners of the Wheelbarrow races in 1969 were: Boys 6-8: Tim Barratt and Bob Tripi. Girls 6-8: Donna Chiavetta and Shari Chiavetta. Boys 9-11: Ed White and Ron Wasik.

Mariam Muhsen Named A.J. Schmidt Student of the Month

Mariam Muhsen had been named the altest A.J. Schmidt Student of the Month. Mariam is a wonderful 3rd grade student in Mrs. Scholl’s class. Mariam is new to our school and has brought so much kindness and positivity. Mariam is a ray of sunshine! When she was recognized for this honor, she said, “It makes me feel like I’m sitting on a rainbow because I like rainbows and I like being kind!” Mariam knows that kindness is so important at school because,“Kindness helps us to be ready to learn at school because our teachers and friends care for us.” Mariam attributes the influence of her grandmother in knowing the value of kindness. Evans Senior Center Donates to the Oishei Foundation

The Evans Senior Center advocates for people in need of resources. We have several programs in place that work together towards this goal. This past December the Center made a sizeable donation to the John R. Oishei Foundation at Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. Thanks to our sewing, crocheting, and quilting class instructors, students, and others individuals we were able to provide a variety of items to this Foundation. The handmade scarves, hats, blankets, gloves, etc. were a welcome and perfect fit for the Women’s Clinic at Children’s Hospital. A cash donation was also part of our gift to the clinic. Our Senior Center, along with the entire Town of Evans community is filled with generous giving hearts. The Evans Senior Center will continue to provide donations as long as we have such wonderful teachers, students, and members who are willing to give of their time and talents.
