The Evans Township Lions Club has a new member. Karen Vail recently joined the club and in doing so became one of over 1.4 million compassionate “Lions” worldwide that from Lions Clubs International (LCI.COM), the largest service organization in the world.

Starting with local clubs, (Evans club serves Evans and Brant), members, (your friends and neighbors, who call themselves “Lions”) live out the International Lions motto, “We Serve.” Over 1.4 million volunteers, worldwide, with one common goal, to help others.

Local clubs serve their home communities needs. Who knows the needs of residents of Evans and Brant, better than the residents of Evans and Brant? Local club membership is voluntary, and always open to everyone.

Southtowns Catholic School Bake for Good

On Monday, January 29th, SCS Students participated in the Bake for Good: Kids Program with Amy Driscoll. They learned math, science, reading, and baking know-how! Each student from Grade 4 to Grade 7 went home with two bags of King Arthur Flour, a BFGK recipe booklet, Red Star yeast, a KAF dough scraper, a bread donation bag and newly learned bread baking skills.

Brant, N.Y. - Using logs, beams and four teams of horses to move the “mill in the woods” (built by Samuel Butts) to the Brant-Reservation Road location (circa 1902 or 1903)

Sawmills played an important role in the development of Towns and Villages. This holds true in our own communities. We discovered the following information in our 1939 and 1964 Town of Brant History books, which explains more about the sawmill building on Brant- Reservation Road.

· The very first sawmill in Brant, was built by Samuel L. Butts in 1822 and was located on Delaware Creek, deep in the woods between Grannis Road (today known as Ellis Road) and Brant-North Collins Road. James K. Calkins, father of Milford Calkins, worked in this mill. Samuel Butts mill later sold this mill to John Grannis, who in 1882, then sold it to Milford Calkins. · Just past the Brant four corners, on the Brant-Reservation Road, John Grannis built a mill, which he sold to William Shefflin in 1898. · Around September 1902 or 1903, Mr. Milford Calkins bought the Shefflin Mill. He moved his Delaware Creek mill via horsepower and logs, combining the two buildings at the Brant-Reservation Road location.

As mentioned, sawmills played an important role in our town’s growth, however “horsepower” also played an significant role. Almost every household had one or more horses, for transportation and for performing work on the farms.

What a sight it must have been, to see a building of any size transported down the street using a team or more of horses.

And yet, not so long ago, this was a common place occurrence.

Many buildings in our town of Brant were moved from one spot to another using this method.

St. Francis Federation Hockey Wins Division Title

The Red Raiders defeated Lockport 6-1 on Sunday to complete an undefeated season in Division 3 Federation Hockey. The team completed their Division 3 schedule with an 11-0-2-1 record to beat out Sweet Home for the number one spot. The Federation Hockey team finished the entire regular season with an overall record of 14-2-4-1. Some key moments from the season: Defeating Christian Brothers Academy (NJ) 1-0 at Lynah Rink (Cornell). Rocco Arnold with a 37 save shutout.

Vince Vaccaro shutout St. Mary’s in January. St. Francis won the game 2-0.

The Red Raiders had a mid-season 11 game unbeaten streak.

Andrew Michalski had a natural hat-trick against Niagara Falls in 17 seconds.

Erik Pawelski and John Kubiak tied for the team lead in points with 26 each.

St. Francis had four players score over 20 points and seven players with over 10 assists.

Both goalies for the Red Raiders finished the season with under a 1.75 GAA, 7 wins, and 2 shutouts each.

The Red Raiders scored 102 goals in regular season, while only giving up 32.
