Most Precious Blood Church will be conducting a drive to collect food, paper goods and personal care items to restock the shelves at Operation Good Neighbor (OGN) starting Ash Wednesday February 22 and ending April 6. All collections will be turned over to OGN for distribution to families in need and residing in the Town of Evans. We will accept dry and canned foods only with examples consisting of soups, cereals, pasta and vegetables. Preferred soup is chicken noodle and tomato. Baby food and disposable diapers are also in great demand. Current programs of assistance will not provide for paper goods and personal care items such as Kleenex, paper towels, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo and toilet paper. These will be collected, also. Excerpt from the 1943 “ANGOLASCOPE” Yearbook: “Military training is new in Angola High School this year. Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday noon Coach Burchett, acting as commanding officer, gives basic training instructions to sixty volunteers. The guns which are wooden are safer and more accessible than real guns. These wooden arms are a benefit to the group’s appearance and now they are able to learn the manual of arms. The volunteers, the majority of whom are seventeen and eighteen years old, are extremely grateful that the Angola High School has offered them another new opportunity to be more prepared when Uncle Sam calls upon them to do their duly for a great nation.”

From the Old Photo Album A Timeline for the Town of Brant, Part 17 Continuation…
1914: World War I, the war against the German Empire begins. July 28, 1914 - November 11, 1918. “Those of German ancestry were called to fight against their own friends and relatives still living in Germany. One ironic twist of fate involved the Steuhring family of Farnham, N.Y.: Mr. Ed Steuhring and his wife Martha (Kuenze) had one son, Edward. When war was declared, the senior Mr. Steuhring was visiting relatives in Germany. As he was still a German citizen, he was drafted into the German army and became an officer. He was killed fighting the Russians on the Eastern front. Many years later, during World War II, his son Edward G. was lost at sea while on a convoy fighting the Germans.” (Excerpt of story written by Fred W. Brinkman for the 1989 Brant History Book.)
1915: March 30th - A “Special to the Buffalo Times” news article regarding the Paul family of Farnham, N.Y. Herbert, Clarence, and Fred, three sons of Mary E. Paul were in various military training camps in the United States, learning the most effective ways of service for their country. Herbert and Fred were at Camp Upton, Yaphank, Long Island and Clarence was at Camp Wadsworth at Spartanburg, S.C. The article stated that “few families in the State are as patriotic as that of Mrs. Mary E. Paul, mother of three sons who have given their services to the government for military duty”. The article also stated that “the boys are the nephews of Supervisor Julius M. Schwert of Angola, whose son Pius L.
