Stay Safe

As we all find ourselves navigating through extremely challenging circumstances, we wanted to take a moment to update you on our company and our efforts to continue to be the "voice" of local businesses in the community. The Angola Pennysaver has been publishing it's weekly community paper for 90 years. We are a locally owned small business that supports and informs our community. We ask that you continue to support our product as you have for generations and during these trying and sensitive times, continue to support ALL local businesses (albeit, in many cases, on a limited basis). Although our office remains operational, our small staff of employees are complying with the mandate to work from home. Our team of carriers will continue to deliver copies to the homes and businesses in our community. Additional copies will be available for you at various business locations, as well as on our loading dock in the front of our building located at 19 Center Street in the Village of Angola. As always, digital copies of current and past editions can be found on our Facebook page. If you need to place an ad or make changes to your current ad you can do so by calling us at 549-1164 or by emailing ads@ angolapennysaver.com. Please note that if you leave a message someone from our staff will return your call from a "non 549-" number. We kindly encourage you to please continue to support our locally owned businesses -- we all need you more now than ever. Together we will get through this crisis and will become stronger than ever! Respectfully, Robert Biondi President, The Angola Pennysaver, Inc.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who kept Billy and his family in their thoughts and prayers through this difficult time. We know his entire family is eternally grateful for your overwhelming love and support . Words cannot truly describe the type of person Billy Hamm truly was. His compassion for other people, family and friends cannot be measured and anyone that knew him would know that to be true. Willam Hamm Jr. started at the Evans Highway Department in 2010. He loved his job and coworkers and it showed everyday. Even towards the end when he struggled to maintain a full work week due to his rigorous treatment schedule he showed up everyday with a smile ready to perform his daily assignment. We know Billy and his family will be forever grateful to all the town employees for their overwhelming generosity in donating their accrued sick time to establish a sick bank in his honor. This generous offer carried him and his family through some of their most difficult times. He was an inspiration to us all. His grit and determination to fight the cancer and still provide for his family a somewhat normal life was a remarkable achievement in itself. His wife Lauren, his 3 year old daughter Bella and year old son Grayson were truly the loves of his life. Billy Hamm was truly and undeniably one of a kind. His warmth, attitude and drive for life will be his legacy. We will all miss you Bill Hamm! Rest In Peace

Farewell wnie Mr. Bro With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to Mr. Brownie. Frank Mills “Music Box Dancer” is the tune you heard long before you saw Mr. Brownie’s ice cream truck coming up your street. Since 2000 Tim Dybdahl Sr. was Mr. Brownie, the Ice Cream Man. He made his rounds every night from May to October and he loved it. If you were one of his regular stops, he probably knew exactly what you wanted. Every Wednesday he supported the Village of Angola gazebo nights. He looked forward to closing each season with the Lion’s Club Annual Halloween parade. Thank you for supporting your local Mr. Brownie all these years. We hope you will smile when you remember those summer nights made more memorable with ice cream.

February Kind Student of the Month at A J Schmidt

AJ Schmidt Elementary School announces that their Kind Student for the Month of February is Omar Evans from Mrs. Dimmer’s Kindergarten class! In an interview, Omar said that being kind is his favorite thing to do and he knows that other people feel good when he spreads kindness. Omar went on to say that he was happy to receive the kindness from another when they drew a picture for him. Omar was feeling sad and that kind act really perked him up. He suggests that it’s easy to be nice to each other! Contributed by the Lake Shore CSD __________

From the Old Photo Album Sherman Falk Flying his Airplane

This interesting story was written by Sherman Falk a few years back for our September 25, 2013 issue of “Brant-Farnham History Vol. XIII Whole No. 46”. It was included in our “Memories” section. His story is about an emergency landing of an airplane in the town of Brant and we think you will enjoy Sherman’s well told tale. The photo does not really pertain to the story - other than the fact that is the author – Sherman Falk - in the pilot seat! Sherman wrote: “In the early stages of World War II (1940’s) a Canadian twin engine airplane believed to be a DeHaviland was forced to make an emergency landing at the Angola Airport. The airport was located on Hardpan Road in the Township of Brant. Located at the airport was a tower with a rotating beacon which was a navigation aid to aircraft. The aircraft involved in this incident had evidently got off course and entered United States airspace. Being at night and getting low on fuel the situation was getting quite serious when they saw the beacon. Knowing that an airport existed, they chose to make a gear up landing, not knowing the conditions on the ground. The pilot, considering all conditions made an exceptional belly landing, with only minor damage to the aircraft’s structure and no injury to flight personnel. Of course during this type of landing the propellers of the aircraft were badly damaged. After inspection of the engines, a decision was made to replace them. This of course took considerable time to get replacement engines and equipment to complete the operation. After the repairs were completed, the aircraft was moved to Rte. 20 on a Sunday morning. Traffic on the highway was stopped so the aircraft could take off. I recall standing in the front yard of my parent’s home and listening to the drone of the engines, as they pre-flighted them prior to take off. Once the aircraft was airborne and climbed above the tree line, it was visible to me as it started on its journey back to its home base. At this point, I would like to say “thanks” to Bertha Notaro for her input. She told me that one of the men on the airplane married a girl from Angola. Also Bertha assisted in defining the time and season of the event; teams were bowling at Pero’s Lanes. This places it at early evening and likely the fall season. ~ Sherman Falk ~ ” Sherman was an enthusiastic member of our historical society for a number of years. He was born on November 17, 1925 and was raised in the town of Brant. His brothers were Ernest, Augustus and Edward Falk. Contributed by Brant- Farnham Historical Society __________

Lake Shore High Hosts Future Workforce Readiness Fair

The Lake Shore Leadership in Action class, in collaboration with Lake Shore Integrators Mr. Mike Drezek and Mrs. Deann Poleon, recently hosted a networking night for the Lake Shore Freshman Academy students and their parents. Students and their parents were able to learn about careers and what technical skills are needed in the workforce from local employers. Students also presented on up-and-coming careers that will be prevalent when the freshman class enters the workforce. The highlight of the night came from motivational and keynote speaker, Mr, Brad Waid. Waid, originally from Detroit, spoke about the jobs of tomorrow and what technology, engineering and hands-on skills we will need to live and work in such a changing world. While parents and students were at times overwhelmed by the technology that is already here, Mr. Waid’s enthusiasm helped to comfort and educate them so that they can be ready and successful in the world of tomorrow. The Leadership in Action students planned, advertised, communicated and organized this event. The Future Workforce Readiness Fair would not have been possible without their hard work. Photo above Mr. Brad Waid educated and excited the Lake Shore Class of 2023 and their parents about the ever-changing world of technology and how it will impact their careers in the future during the Future Workforce Readiness Fair. Lake Shore Academy Honors March “Stunning Students”

The Lake Shore Freshman Academy would like to announce the “Stunning Students” for March as Austin Russel, Mia Valentine, Jonathan Szewczyk, Jared Ames, and Autumn Pruchnicki. The Lake Shore Freshman Academy honors students every month for embodying the six “Cs” of the Academy. The six “Cs” are compassion, character, consistency, cooperation, critical thinking and capability. The Freshman Academy is very proud of these students and is happy to recognize them for being “stunning” and would like to thank their parents for raising wonderful role models. Photo Cutline: Although March is proving to be a challenging month for many, Lake Shore’s Freshman Academy would like to honor (from left to right) Austin Russel, Mia Valentine, Johnathan Szewcyzk, Jared Ames and (not pictured) Autumn Pruchnicki for being “Stunning Students” through it all Contributed by the Lake Shore CSD __________

Andrea Herold DC & Timothy Smith DC are taking the current COVID-19 situation seriously. Elective medical procedures across the country are being cancelled and rescheduled. This is for good reason; the more we congregate, the more the curve spikes.

For many patients, when treatment began, you were not “electing” for care. You needed it. We fought hard with you to keep you out of urgent care, pharmacies, emergency rooms and surgery and we won. Chiropractic care has an important role through this crisis by managing non-COVID19 injuries and we both commit to do this moving forward, as safely as possible. Together we pledge: • We will not go to work if we are sick, think that we might be sick, or have a fever and are otherwise asymptomatic. We expect you to do the same. • To reduce the number human to human contact in our office and waiting rooms. Please do not arrive early to your appointment, and avoid bringing family or friends unless it is completely necessary.
