TRANSPORTATION REQUESTS EXTENDED State Education Department said that it is directing all public school districts to accept all parental requests for transportation to charter and nonpublic schools submitted on or before April 15, 2020, rather than the statutory deadline of April 1. Private Parochial Request Forms are available on our website, www.lakeshorecsd.org, under “Services”, “Transportation Services”, and click on “Forms”. Once the proper form is completed it should be submitted to the District’s Transporation Office located at 8710 North Main Street, Angola, NY 14006. This announcement has been published to alert parents of such students, or prospectice studetns, to inquire as to the procedure to be used if the are not clear relative to the extended April 15th transportation request filing deadline. Parents who have questions concerning filing procedures for schools within the 15-mile transportation limit, which is established by New York State Education Law, should contact Perry Oddi, Transporation Supervisor at 926-2241. MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD FOOD AND PAPER DRIVE We have learned from Operation Good Neighbor (OGN) that each year after the Holidays the many efforts to provide food for those in need are not as plentiful. Consequently we will be conducting a food drive to restock the Evans food pantry at OGN that will start Ash Wednesday February 26 and run through the Lenten season ending Easter Sunday April 12. We will accept dry and canned foods only with examples consisting of soups, cereals, pasta and vegetables. Preferred soup is chicken noodle and tomato. Baby food is also in great demand. Current programs of assistance will not provide for paper goods such as Kleenex, paper towels, diapers and toilet paper so these will be collected, also. Carole A. Hageman (nee Grupka)

Carole A. Hageman (nee Grupka) age 75, of Angola, NY entered into eternal rest Wednesday, March 11, 2020 in her home, after a courageous battle with cancer. Carole was a Clerk Typist (secretary) at Lake Shore High School in the Counseling Center (Guidance Office) before she retired in 2013. (1988-2013) Carole, along with her brother Richard S. Grupka, was raised in Hamburg, NY by their parents Alberta G. Grupka (nee Bucki) and Stanley J. Grupka. She met Carl W. Hageman Jr. at the Scranton Fire Hall. Carole said she was older so that Carl, age 17, would be interested in her. They started dating when she was 13 and married when she was 18. As their family began to grow they moved to Angola and live on a 50 acre farm. They raised horses, cows, pigs, goats and later even alpacas. They were members of Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, the Trailriders, Grange, 4H, and many social clubs. Carole and Carl were very generous. Their children can remember many times when friends and/or family going through hard times live with them for months at a time! Carole and Carl had three children; Mark C. Hageman, Ronald C. Hageman and Cheryl A. Meyer (nee Hageman), three grandchildren; Mark C. Hageman Jr., Nathan B. Meyer and Alyssa R. Meyer, and one great grandchild: Michael M. Hageman. She had two daughter in laws; Margaret J. Hageman (nee Sanders) and Mary A. Hageman (nee Pytak) and of course Scout, Michael’s trusted Labradoodle. After Carl passed away in November 9, 2002, Carole started playing Bingo and

slots. She loved playing and spending time with her “Bingo Family”. She was very lucky not only wining large cash prizes but TWICE she won a car! She liked selling fried dough for Charlie. She loved getting out and seeing people. She also enjoyed traveling. She would fly to Texas to visit her daughter Cheryl, Florida to visit her brother Richard. She traveled to other places like Las Vegas, Cancun and many more exciting destinations. She enjoyed scrapbooking, needlepoint, crocheting and many other crafts. Carole had many close friends and relatives but in the end a few of them really stepped up to help her. In January 2019 she was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. She kept up with most of her farm work with help from her nephew, John Hageman Sr. In August complications from radiation would no longer allowed her be on her own. Her son Mark moved in with her to take care of her. When Mark was at work her friends Phyllis and Raymond diligently watched over her. Sr. Ann Marie from Most Precious Blood would visit her regularly and give her much needed guidance and comfort. Raymond looked on as Carole took her last breath while Mark held her hand and the Hospice nurse was finishing Carole’s intake paper work. Carole truly loved life and fought as hard as she could until the very end. The day of her Wake, March 15, 2020, COVID-19 started flooding the news in Erie County. It was announced that all schools were closing until April 20 and groups of more than 50 people could not gather. The following morning it was declared that the Catholic Church in Erie County would not hold masses until further notice and only family members would be able to attend Funeral Masses. A few close friends had not heard the news and attended the mass. Father Tim brought comfort to us all as during this very trying time. Carole lived a wonderful life with much enthusiasm and many close friends. She will be greatly missed by many. ___________

SCHOOL TRANSFERS FOR NATIVE AMERICAN STUDENTS Pursuant to an agreement between the New York State Education Department and the Lake Shore (Evans-Brant) Central School District, Native American children residing within the Cattaraugus Reservation may attend the Lake Shore Central Schools by filing an application for transfer by April 15th each year. The George and Almira Hammond Home, Brant, N.Y.

Our historical society received an email from John Hammond of Boise, Idaho. It seems that John is the great-grandson of George Hammond. John sent us this wonderful photo of his great-grandfather’s Brant, N.Y. home. Along with the photo, John also included the following note: “I have a photo that may be of interest. It is of George and Almira Hammond in front of their home on Hammond Road in Brant. Also in the photo are two of their grandchildren. It is believed they are Lester Hammond’s children, Merritt and Grace. I would guess it was taken between 1910 and 1915. I believe it [the home] is located on the east side of the section of Hammond Road between US 20 and Interstate 90. It is my understanding that Lester [Hammond] and his family lived there for a number of years before and after the death of George in 1917. Lester continued to farm the land and to my knowledge the home is still there. The last I knew the property was owned by Merritt and Marian Hammond (who are now deceased) and had been leased out. I was looking at the photo of the old homestead and I noticed something interesting. The portion of the house behind George and Almira has a porch and, if you zoom in, the wall beneath the porch appears to be made of split logs. I wonder if that portion of the house was the first house of the Benoni Hammond’s family who settled in Brant between 1830 – 1840? Benoni was George Hammond’s grandfather. Oh well, we’ll never know.” In another email John elaborated further on the Hammond family genealogy; one of George’s sons John L. Hammond, had a son by the name of Ivan. Ivan attended the Mud Street school also known as #6 and then #4 school. This school was located on the corner of Hammond Road and Mud Street (Brant-Farnham Road). Remember, at that time, the N.Y.S. Thruway did not divide Hammond Road. Ivan Hammond had a son named John and it is this John Hammond that sent us the photo. George’s brother was William Wallace Hammond. The Hammond family can boast of descendants that arrived on the Mayflower. It appears that Hammond Road, which once extended the width of the town of Brant from Milestrip Road to Cain Road, was named for this early town of Brant family. Hammond Road was divided in two by the N.Y.S. Thruway during the 1950’s. Contributed by Brant- Farnham Historical Society __________

NOTICE OF ANNUAL SCHOOL BUDGET MEETING BUDGET REFERENDUM AND ELECTION NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Annual School Budget Meeting (Public Hearing) for qualified district residents will be held in the Lake Shore High School Library Media Center, 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York on Tuesday, May 5, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. FURTHER NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Annual School Budget Referendum and Election for (1) approval of the Annual School District Budget for the 2020-21 School Year; and (2) voting on the purchase of replacement vehicles; and (3) the Election of two qualified district residents to the office of Member of the Board of Education – both for a three-year term to commence on July 1, 2020; and (4) for the transaction of such other business as is authorized by law, will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2020, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., in the Lobby located outside the District Office/Gymnasium of the Lake Shore High School located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York 14006. TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that a copy of the statement of the amount of money which will be required for the 2020-21 fiscal year for school purposes, exclusive of public monies, may be obtained by any District resident beginning May 5, 2020 through and including May 19, 2020, excluding weekends and holidays, at the District Office, 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York or in each school building between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that all candidates for the office of Member of the Board of Education shall be nominated by petition. Each nominating petition shall be directed to the District Clerk, shall be signed by at least twenty-five (25) qualified voters of the District, and shall state the residence of each signer, and shall state the name and residence of the candidate. Petitions shall be filed in the District Clerk’s Office located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday except Holidays. Each petition must be filed in the District Clerk’s Office by no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 20, 2020. The two candidates who receive the highest number of votes at the Annual Meeting will fill the expired terms of the two incumbents and will serve on the Board of Education for three-year terms to commence on July 1, 2020 and expire June 30, 2023. TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that voting on the budget and other propositions will consist of voting on the following propositions, as well as other such matters as may be lawfully presented at the meeting: PROPOSITION NO. 1 Shall the following resolution be adopted, to wit: RESOLVED, that the budget for the EvansBrant (Lake Shore) Central School District for the fiscal year commencing July 1, 2020, and ending June 30, 2021, as presented by the Board of Education is hereby approved and adopted and the required funds therefore are hereby appropriated and the necessary real property taxes required shall be raised by a tax on the taxable property in the District to be levied and collected as required by law. Adoption of this budget requires a tax levy increase of 1.43% which does not exceed the statutory tax levy increase limit of 1.43%.

PROPOSITION NO. 2 Shall the following resolution be adopted, to wit: RESOLVED, that the Board of Education of the Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District (the “District) is hereby authorized to purchase the following replacement vehicles for use by the District in the transportation of students and general use by the District: three (3) full size diesel-powered 71-passenger school buses at an estimated maximum cost of $126,322.95 each; one (1) 30-passenger gasoline-powered school bus at an estimated cost of $66,484.49; and one (1) 24passenger 5-wheel chair position gasoline-powered wheel chair school bus at an estimated cost of $74,986.13; for a total aggregate maximum cost of $520,439.47; with such aggregate cost to be raised by a tax upon the taxable property of the District to be levied and collected in annual installments as provided in Section 416 of the Education Law, with such tax to be partially offset by State aid available therefore, and, in anticipation of such tax, by the issuance of debt obligations of the District as may be necessary, not to exceed such maximum aggregate cost. No tax levy increase is anticipated for Proposition No. 2. TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that applications for absentee ballots may be obtained Monday through Friday, except holidays, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. in the District Clerk’s Office located at 959 Beach Road, Angola, New York. Completed applications must be received by the District Clerk or her designee at least seven (7) days before the annual meeting and election (May 12, 2020) if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter or by the day before the election (May 18, 2020) if the ballot is to be issued to the voter in person. Completed absentee ballots must be received by the office of the District Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on May 19, 2020. TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that military voters who are qualified voters of the school district may apply for a military ballot. Applications for military ballots may be obtained from the District Clerk’s Office and the military voter may designate a preference to receive the application by mail, fax or email. Completed applications for military ballots must be received by the District Clerk or her designee by no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 23, 2020. TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that a list of all persons to whom absentee voter ballots are issued will be available for public inspection between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. in the office of the District Clerk on the five days prior to the annual meeting and election, except Sundays, and such list will be available at the polling place during the annual meeting and election. Any qualified voter may, upon examination of such list, file a written challenge of the qualifications as a voter of any person whose name appears on such list, stating the reasons for such challenge. Such written challenge shall be transmitted by the District Clerk to the Chief Election Inspector before the close of the polls.
