Marilyn A. Soehnlein, 86, formerly of Bemus Point, died peacefully Monday April 5, 2021, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born December 5, 1934, in Buffalo, a daughter of Norman and Marion Lake Rechlin. Marilyn grew up in Roat Acres. Following high school, she graduated from Millard Fillmore School of Nursing as a registered nurse. Prior to her retirement she was employed by WCA Hospital and earlier Brooks Memorial Hospital. She will be remembered as a loving Mother and Grandmother with a gentle, caring and beautiful soul. Her family was her world and her greatest accomplishment in life. She lived life full of joy, grateful for each and every day. In her family's eyes she was a saint. From her family to her nursing career, caretaking was her life's mission. She was a devout Christian, faithful to our Lord and Savior. She was patient, loving and kind and loved her family with all her heart. Surviving are three daughters Sharon Soehnlein, Jacqueline (Patrick) Damore and Diane (Richard) Harding; a son Eric (Laurie) Soehnlein; grandchildren Jillian Messinger, Amy Larson, Jocelyn Garrison, Danyelle Harding, Colton Soehnlein, Samuel Damore, Julia Damore and Riley Soehnlein; great grandsons Conway and Hans Larson and siblings Lucille White, Neil Rechlin and Grace Seitz. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Ronald Soehnlein, whom she married October 5, 1957 and who died April 13, 1992; her beloved grandson Alan Harding and brothers Norman and Charles Rechlin. ___________

Today’s photo is of the one time Village of Farnham’s Police Car. It was a 1961 Plymouth 2 door (we think standard on the column). Some Police cars of this era were advertised as having “lightening-like acceleration” and “eye-popping getaway” and others were recommended “specifically for patrol service on expressways, highways, super highways and turnpikes.” Definitely a classic! We also found, in a November 14, 1963 Angola Pennysaver advertisement, there was a “NOTICE OF SALE that the Town of Brant will sell by bid a 1962 Plymouth 2 door, Standard Shift, Constable Car. In 2017, The Angola Horror Committee shared the following story with Pennysaver readers: “Over 150 years ago one of the world’s worst and deadly train accidents occurred just 1/2 mile away from the center of the Village of Angola, N.Y. One week prior to Christmas, on December 18, 1867, passengers on their way to New York City had mostly boarded in Cleveland, Ohio and were contained in four passenger cars constructed primarily of wood. As the train was leaving the forty-foot wooden trestle bridge over the Big Sister Creek in Angola, the last two cars of the Lake Shore Railway elite express train derailed. The very last train car fell to the frozen creek below. The car ahead of the last, made it across to the east side of the bridge, however it then slid down the steep embankment. The accident known as THE ANGOLA HORROR made headlines throughout the nation. Smith) for the HARPERS WEEKLY mediately responded to the cries newspaper dated January 11, 1868. of the many doomed victims that afternoon of December 18th, 1867. Of the two derailed train cars, it was the passengers of the last train car that fared the worst. Soon after impact at the bottom of the ravine, the wooden car ignited from glowing coals spilled from the stove and the fire was quickly spread by the kerosene from overturned lamps. Screaming passengers had to be heroically pulled from the burning car. Those who survived the flames had to be carried to safety - to a make-shift emergency hospital or nearby residences.” Paul McQuillen, correspondent for THE SUN, a few years previous had interviewed Charity Vogel, well-known local author of the book “The Angola Horror” (reference The SUN issue dated Thursday Dec. 26, 2013). Based on the extensive investigations by Vogel for her book, and during the interview, they discussed the dedication of the doctors at the time of the disaster and the heroic attempts of the rescuers as they helped as well. From their conversation McQuillen included in his article that “The rescuers descended into the creek, to offer aid, rescue or recovery and then to raise the injured and the dead up the ravine. Frederick Hoyer, a physician from Tonawanda, was a passenger in one of the forward cars. He was joined in his efforts by Angola physician Romaine Curtiss, a Civil War surgeon. Curtiss said that the most immediate need was to secure a setting where the injured could be treated and the dead could be collected”. McQuillen’s story continued with “…the Southwick home as well as that of Frank and Thankful Griffith were utilized as temporary hospitals. Curtis and Hoyer spent night and day at the scene, attending to the suffering and dying. Dr. Orin Payne, who had been a passenger on the train prior to the wreck and had been detained in Silver Creek, hurried to assist in the efforts. A relief train bringing doctors, medical supplies, railroad personnel and bedding for the injured was sent from Buffalo.” A true-life story, beyond tragic to be sure.
