MONDAY, MAY 30th, 2022 10:00 AM Line-up at the Fire Hall (41 Commercial Street, Angola) Service at Forest Avenue Cemetery • Return to the Fire Hall On Monday, May 30, 2022, The Village of Angola, Newcomb-Long Post 928 of the American Legion and the Evans Township Post 5798 Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold their annual MEMORIAL DAY PARADE & SERVICE in the Village of Angola. Line up for the parade will be at the Angola Fire Hall grounds at 41 Commercial Street at 9:30 AM. The Parade will start at 10:00 AM. We will march to the Forest Avenue Cemetery for special services and then back to the Angola Fire Hall grounds at 41 Commercial Street. (Rain location will be the Angola Fire Hall at 41 Commercial Street) We invite Gold Star Mothers, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Firefighters, Police, all organizations, Public Officials and all Veterans from all wars to join us for this important parade and service. We also encourage decorated bikes, floats, etc.

Audit Committee Member Lake Shore Central Schools is currently recruiting a volunteer member to serve on the District’s Audit Committee. Individuals must have financial background or experience and cannot be employees of the Evans-Brant (Lake Shore) Central School District. The successful candidate will serve for a three year term from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2025. This position is currently held by Thomas George. The Board of Education and District Administrators are dedicating significant time to assuring the fiscal management of the District. Angola Library Director Jennifer Page and Library Board President Jack Kuebler were all smiles as they enjoyed the student’s Artwork Display!

Artwork Display at the Angola Public Library

The Angola Public Library recently hosted an Artwork Display for four-weeks, concluding on the 18th of April. Works of art from students at the John T. Waugh Elementary School were placed in various groupings throughout the library, with the largest variety of exhibitions in the community meeting room on the second floor. From her student’s portfolios, the John T. Waugh Art Teacher - Janelle Wade, had selected so many incredible art pieces, depicting many different themes, mediums, and techniques for visitors to enjoy. The Angola Library provided the foam boards for the displays, with Ms. Wade creating each of the eye-catching arrangements. We must say that unbelievable creative talent abounds in our local school! Ms. Wade strongly encouraged her students who had artwork on display, Painted Fall and Winters scenes were just one of the many displays from John T. Waugh Elementary to bring their families to the library. She requested that they take a photo with School on exhibit at the Angola Library. their artwork to document this highlight of their early artistic careers. Angola Library Director Jennifer Page, as well as the entire Angola Library Staff were excited and honored to host such an event for the community to enjoy and look forward to promoting our local aspiring artists again in the very near future. William G. Houston Middle School Dedication

The public is invited to attend the 7pm, Friday, June 10 renaming of Lake Shore Middle School in honor of the district’s longtime former superintendent, the late William G. Houston.

A WWI Photo Comes Home

In early March, we received the following email message: “My name is Steve Lanza and I live down in Olean NY. I have a large, approximately 12" by 24" framed photo of Camp Josiah Porter, Farnham NY dated 1911 that I am wondering if your Historical Society would be interested in. I would like to donate…”. OH MY!! We of course responded to the email right away and were able to arrange a future meeting. As it turned out, a few days later, Steve and his wife Eileen offered to personally deliver the photo to our historical society. We were able to meet the couple on March 29th at the Brant Town Hall, where Steve explained that he had originally purchased the photo at a sale at the Veteran’s Legion in Olean about five years ago. They are now downsizing and decided to bring the photo to its rightful “home” in Brant and Farnham. We are so grateful that they made the decision to donate it to us, but even more grateful that it was personally delivered so we could meet them both! You may recall in some earlier articles where we explained how the town of Brant and Village of Farnham were directly involved in World War I when a National Guard training camp - Camp Porter - was established on the shore of Lake Erie. The camp was so named in respectful memory of Major-General Josiah Porter and was located on the area of today’s Evangola State Park. The National Guard 65th and 74th regiments would arrive via special train on the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad at the Station once located on Railroad Avenue in the Village of Farnham. We have a collection of Camp Porter photos taken by Lynn Walters of Brant, NY around that same time frame. These photos were donated a few years ago to the historical society by Jeanne Treat and are printed from glass plate negatives. This amazing photo from Steve and Eileen will be right at home with our collection located in the historical room at the Brant Town Hall. High School Students Learn the Importance and Process of Voting

Voting is one of the most important rights and responsibilities that U.S. citizens have and learning about it teaches students about civics and how our government works. In Sophie Chimera’s Participation in Government class at Lake Shore High School, Jeremy Zellner, Erie County Board of Elections Commissioner, visited to talk about the levels of government, voting, the registration process and how to use a voting machine. “Kids were happy to practice using the machine for the first time,” says Mrs. Chimera, adding that Mr. Zellner is the Democratic election commissioner. “Mr. Zellner stressed that the Erie County Board of Elections is a bipartisan organization and he works alongside the Republican election commissioner, Ralph Mohr.” Contributed by Lake Shore CSD __________
