Evans District #12 Schoolhouse - Grades 1 - 5, June 1946

Focus on Evans: 200 Years 1821 - 2021

According to 2007 historical records prepared by then Evans Historian Cheryl Delano, the Evans School #12 was known as the Lake Bay School and was located on the Old Lake Shore Road. It was situated in front of the Erie County Sewer District #2 building, but has since been torn down. Included in the photo are: FRONT ROW (sitting): Jackie Eisenzimmer, unknown, Leon Naab Jr., Dale Garlock, Robert Meyers. SECOND ROW (sitting): Wilfred Cuoco, John Holben, Jerry Clough, Alfred Englund, Lisa Winch, Janet Garlock, Nancy Evans, Martha Clough, Marilyn Howder. THIRD ROW (standing): David Eastman, Alan Graebner, Bobby Howder, John Kinn, John Graebner, Kenneth Roberts, unknown, Kevin Siepel, Susan Garlock. BACK ROW (standing): Paul (?) In the future, Jordyn would like to create cover designs for books. Books are her favorite thing in the world. Jordyn feels that confidence is the most important trait for continued success. Austin Solecki, Grade 7 Austin’s favorite subject is art. He likes to relax and enjoy the weather when he’s able. At the moment, he would like to be a toy designer when he gets older. Austin really likes penguins because they look fluffy and intriguing. Austin thinks that the most important trait for continued success is commitment. As Austin says, “If you don’t give up, you can’t really fail.” Emily Valentine, Grade 8 Emily’s favorite subjects are math and English. Outside of school, Emily likes to play clarinet, volleyball and ski. In the future, she would like to go to college to become a lawyer. Emily’s favorite thing in the world is her family. A Time Line for the Town of Brant, Part 3 1839: Town of Brant created by New York Legislature on March 25th. The town was formed of land from Evans and Collins, and was named after Mohawk Chief Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea). 1839: Jonathan Hascall Jr., the son of Baptist Minister, is Brant’s first Supervisor. 1839: (April 16th) The first town meeting is held at the residence of Ansel Smith. This home later became the Joseph F. Catalano home. It was and still is located on the Brant-North Collins Road. 1839: The Brant Protestant Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Brant. The burial places of Elias Chapin and Samuel Fuller, the only Revolutionary soldiers in the area, are located in this cemetery. Elias Chapin who died in 1839 at the age of 88 came to Brant in 1834. He had enlisted in April of 1775 soon after the battle of Lexington, and served as a Private with the light dragoons during the Revolution until 1777. Samuel Fuller died in 1842 at 89 years of age. 1839: Brant population 900 / Farnham population 300 1840: Total taxes collected in Brant $116.82. 1840: Buffalo population 18,213. Erie County population 62,465. 1840 or 1842: Methodists formed a class under Rev. Mr. Fenton in pastoral connection with Evans Church. In 1880 there were 47 members. 1845: The population of Brant was 987. 1845: Brant teacher, A.F. Brown’s pay was $14.48/month. 1846: The United States flag had 29 stars. 1848: Brant School teacher’s wages were $14.48/month. Increasing in 1873 to $17.25/month. 1850: Brant population 1028. The part of town open to settlement by the whites was well occupied. The west end of town (closer to Lake Erie) was still thinly settled. 1852: Buffalo State Line Railroad (later Brant Cemetery sign for Samuel Fuller, known as the Lakeshore & Michigan) who in was in his 89th year when he established a station in Farnham, N.Y. died in 1842. He came to Brant in 1855: Nathan Tucker buys land in Brant. 1835. Samuel, was a Private in Brant Population is now 1093. the Revolution serving from 1776 To be continued… to 1777 in Connecticut, New Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society Hampshire and Vermont. __________

call 716-913-4018 Boys & Girls Club of Eden-Lake Shore Funds Programs for Local Kids The Boys & Girls Club of Eden-Lake Shore is proud to announce their Whatever It Takes Campaign. Financial support from this Campaign will invest in members and our communities. It will fund high-quality summer youth programs and keep childcare costs to families at a minimum. The challenges for the Boys & Girls Club of Eden-Lake Shore and youth have been significant. Members have struggled physically, mentally, and financially. The Club is doing whatever it takes to ensure all kids have a great future. Summer programming began in July 2020 to a limited number of children. The goal was to offer youth services that were safe and fun. They provide caring mentors, and innovative programs designed to empower youth to excel in school and lead healthy, productive lives. As the school year began, The Club became a virtual learning center, offering educational support to children in the Lake Shore and Eden school communities. As the school districts changed course from traditional in-school programming to remote and hybrid configurations, kids needed a safe space to learn. The Club adopted new programs and adapted schedules to support local families. Staff offered educational support to youth and assistance with virtual classes. Covid-19 limited the number of participating youth to 80 children. In 2021, they continued offering full-day programs and childcare to families. Because of these programs, parents can return to work while their children stayed on task with school. Comments from Jason Mazurkiewicz, Executive Director. "Our job is to do whatever it takes to help kids succeed. The Club is here to keep kids safe and engaged during full-day, afterschool, and summer programs. We provide a safe space for kids to succeed educationally, physically, mentally, and socially. However, the expense to maintain these programs is significant.” Thanks to generous financial support from individual donors, the Town of Evans and Erie 2 BOCES, the Boys & Girls Club of Eden-Lake Shore was able to keep the cost for after-school programs low. Funding from the Town of Evans in February 2021 helped us establish a virtual learning center in the Lake Shore School District. Support from Erie 2 BOCES made it possible to provide the same programs at our Eden Clubhouse. The Club hopes support from the Whatever It Takes Campaign will have the same result for summer programs. It is expected the cost for these services will cost The Club $26,337. Additional insight from Jason Mazurkiewicz: "The Club is committed to helping kids build great futures and give back to the communities we serve. We are an affordable option because of the support we receive from this community. Providing youth programs is an expensive task, especially during a pandemic. The Club has to hire additional staff to maintain social distancing. We are hoping the community will come through and support our Whatever It Takes Campaign." Funds from the Whatever It Takes Campaign will help local kids and The Club recover from the effects of Covid-19. The Brant Ball Club of 1955

During a recent visit with Joyce Cureo of Farnham on May 25th, we were presented with this photocopy of the Brant Baseball Team of 1955. The team played hard ball and their home games were at Brant Center on Brant-Reservation Road. The ball diamond was located where the Pero Farms Bean Factory is today (across from Gugino’s Lawn and Garden equipment). Joyce was the scorekeeper. Her dad Sam, better known as “Red”, was a member of the team. In 1935 “Red” received a letter of recommendation from U.S. Congressman James M. Mead recommending that he tryout for the Buffalo Bisons team at the Bison Stadium or any of the other minor leagues. The Brant baseball team as pictured are: (L-R) kneeling: Sonny “Frank” Muscato, Herman Muscato, Dale Nephew with Anthony Chiavetta sitting in front of him. Finishing the front row are Russ Muscato and Jerry “Nip” Harrington. In the back row we have Don Salvo, Danny Littlefield, Joe Loretto, Joe Muscato, Sam “Red” Cureo and Vinnie Stevens. Joyce advised us that six of the players listed - Danny Littlefield, Joe Muscato, “Red” Cureo, Vinnie Stevens, Dale Nephew and “Nip” Harrington had originally been members of the Farnham Baseball Team. Later the Farnham ball team merged with the Brant ball team. Joyce has a love for the game and has some great scrapbooks of those “take me out to the ballgame” Farnham and Brant baseball days. Each scrapbook is packed with photos, schedules, score sheets, stats, newspaper clippings and so much more! GREAT MEMORIES! Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society __________
