(Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me where you are, my Mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (three times). Holy Mary, I place this prayer for your hands (three times). Evans Senior Center Hosts Speaker on Global Crisis of Fresh Water Evans senior center provides a current topic of interest on the “Global Crisis of Fresh Water, given by Professor Claude Welch of Political Science, Emeritus. We live in a community surrounded by water and the concerns of freshwater resources are threatened by rising demands from growing populations and climate change. This was a great opportunity for members of the community to express their concerns and ask questions on how they can advocate HOW CAN THEY HELP? Professor Welch went into detail on the current changes that are affecting our Fresh waters systems. Again this is just one of the educational topics that are being offered at the center. Our goal at the center is to provide the opportunity to be informed and ask how can we aide our own communities to be more mind full of our natural resources? Education is a powerful tool and why not ceases the opportunity to equip ourselves, with the proper tools for change? Contributed by Evans Senior Center __________

Brant’s Three Youngest Citizens
Brant’s Youngest Citizen; Iris McClure “marching” in the Brant Summer Festival parade with her parents and sister.
Three weeks prior to the Brant Summer Festival, a request was placed in the local pennysavers to find the youngest citizen in the town of Brant. On Brant Summer Festival Saturday, we had not one - but three little ones to honor! The first to register was Iris McClure who was born in October of 2018, second place was held by Aric Michael West Jr., born September 2018. Liam Benjamin Friend is our 3rd youngest citizen registered - he was born in August of 2018. Two of the three babies were able to attend the Brant Summer Festival on the rainy Father’s Day Sunday of June 16, 2019. Iris, carried by her dad and mom, walked in the parade with her sister Raegan. Iris was proudly wearing her 1st place Youngest Brant Citizen ribbon. Iris’ mom and dad each received a button to wear proclaiming their rights as “Proud Parents of Brant’s Youngest Citizen”. Following the parade, Master of Ceremonies Jeff Connors introduced Iris and her family to the crowd of spectators and the BrantFarnham Historical Society presented her with a “chunky” farm puzzle as a special gift for her enjoyment when she gets a little older. The farm puzzle represents Brant as a farming community. Iris’ proud parents are Erin and Joseph McClure and it just so happens that her older sister Raegan was Brant’s 3rd place Youngest Citizen in the year of 2017! Also in attendance at Sunday’s parade was Liam Benjamin Friend who received a ribbon for his title as Brant’s 3rd Youngest Citizen. Liam, his mom Amber, his dad Sam and his big brother Owen did not march (L-R) Sam, Amber and Liam in the parade but were on Friend. Liam is holding on tightly to the sidelines cheering on his 3rd place Brant’s Youngest Citiall the parade participants. zen ribbon. Liam’s brother Owen (not pictured) was busy enjoying Liam’s older brother Owen Brant Summer Festival activities was Brant’s 4 place Youngwith his cousins. est Citizen in 2016. Aric Michael West Jr., was not able to attend the Summer Festival on Sunday, however he received his ribbon of 2nd Youngest Brant Citizen later in the day. His mom and dad are Amanda and Aric and he has an older sister Avia. The Brant Summer Festival committee and the town of Brant residents, are pleased to welcome our town’s youngest citizens Iris McClure, Aric Michael West Jr. and Liam Benjamin Friend. The Town of Evans deserves good government that is fiscally responsible. I worked hard to fix the problems of the past and now the Town of Evans is moving toward economic growth and prosperity. In 2016, I became the Town of Evans Supervisor and walked into the worst financial disaster the Town of Evans had experienced. The Town of Evans was on the edge of bankruptcy. During the four years prior to my election the Town bank accounts had not been reconciled and approximately 2,500 financial transactions were missing. Mandatory Annual New York State financial reports had not been filed as far back as 2011 and the town’s financial information was incomplete and inaccurate to the point that no financial opinion could be rendered on the financial health of our town. Our bond rating was pulled in 2013, due to payment default and the continued financial deterioration of our town. I worked diligently to eliminate our debt. Relying on my conservative values and financial experience, I’ve had to make some very tough decisions. There were lay-offs and other significant cuts in department budgets, health insurance plans were adjusted and reasonable union contracts were negotiated, all of which helped us to stabalize our town financially. Three years later the Town of Evans is fiscally healthy and experiencing a revitalization. We have eliminated budget deficits, we have an “A Stable Bond Rating” and we finished 2018 without the need to borrow money. Let me share with you some of the financial milestones our Town achieved in my tenure as Supervisor: • Awarded over $5 million in Grants • Recovered $1 million in revenue • Eliminated a $2.6 million fund balance deficit • Eliminated $1.7 million in short term debt use to close budget deficit • Cleaned up the abuse in worker's compensation which has reduced our premiums and allowed us to generate $250,000 in dividend income • Re-established our bond rating, after losing it in 2013 due the deterioration of our town's financial mis-management - received an “A Stable Bond Rating” • Improved operational efficiency and reduced payroll expenses • Established policies and procedures to ensure controlled spending • Updated Town's Comprehensive Plan which promotes smart economic development • Updating our Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan • Addressed all outstanding audit issues from previous the administration • Decreased taxes in 2019 I look forward to meeting with you as I start my door to door campaign this summer and I look forward to serving you for another 4 years. Respectfully, Mary K. Hosler
Town Supervisor

ATTENTION CONSERVATIVE & INDEPENDENCE VOTERS! After the endorsements of the Conservative, Independence (along with Working Families and Green party), were denied to Democrat candidates in Evans, county Democrat operatives came into town to circulate write-in petitions for the Primary Election. This effort was to challenge your party’s choices. Tell these county outsiders to leave Evans business to Evans residents!

A Brant Strawberry Festival Float depicts the theme “Our Tribute to Chief Joseph Brant”; Namesake of the Town of Brant
Each of the floats in the annual Brant Strawberry Festival parades were quite creative! Today’s photo shows a float which pays tribute to Chief Joseph Brant, namesake of the Town of Brant. We are not positive of the date, most likely it is late 1950’s or early 1960’s. According to our 100 year anniversary history book published in 1939 (80 years ago), the following is how Brant was given an Indian name. This narrative was written by Native American Ely Pierce in 1939. (At the date of the writing, Ely was 82 years of age, which calculates that his birth year was 1857.) Ely wrote “A long time ago at the cross roads now called Brant, the Seneca-Cattaraugus Reservation Indians found they could buy groceries and especially chewing and smoking tobacco. They called it Da-Dwah-Tsh-sa, meaning where the roads cross over each other. So it went on for many years and the Indians had plenty of tobacco. Even the children, when going to the old men and women to listen to the old Indian stories and legends, would pay in chewing or smoking tobacco, whichever it might be. Now came the days of rivalry between the Democrats and Republicans at nearby towns adjoining the Reservation. The democrats would put up the Old Hickory Pole and raise the American Flag on it, while the Republicans would use the Pine. In those days the trees were very tall and straight, and up went poles for flagstaffs. Then came the name Tgaon-doadt. Place where the Pole Stands. To this day, we call Brant, Tgan-doadt.” The Town of Brant, formed through legislative action on March 25, 1839 was named in honor of Joseph Brant, the famous chief of the Mohawk Indians who was a British Ally during the Revolutionary War. The Revolutionary War, occurred during the years 1775-1783. It was a war between Great Britain and its thirteen colonies which declared independence as the United States of America. The Mohawk Chief Joseph Brant, leader of the Minisink Massacre on July 22, 1779, was an ally of the British. The horrendous event at Minisink occurred three years after the Declaration of Independence was signed, which was when the United States officially declared Independence from the British Empire. Minisink is located in Orange County, New York State, close to the New York City area. According to the website https://www.britannica.com/biography/JosephBrant, “After the war, Brant discouraged further Indian warfare on the frontier and aided the U.S. commissioners in securing peace treaties with the Miamis and other western tribes. He retained his commission in the British army and was awarded a grant of land on the Grand River, in Ontario, where he ruled peacefully over his followers who settled there.” Contributed by Brant- Farnham Historical Society __________

This establishment was located on the Brant-Reservation Road, just past the Brant four corners. We are sorry to say that the date of the photo is unknown as are the names of the men in the photo. In our Brant history book of 1964 it is stated that “In 1889, Emma Lehley owned the hotel, succeeded by Fred Johnt, Peter Reifel and August Middlemire and was known then as the Union Hotel, with a barroom on the main floor. In 1900, Frank Gruener operated the hotel and William Ahlers had it in 1903. Behind the building was located a corral which was used to keep cattle being driven to market.” William Ahlers is the grandfather of longtime Farnham resident Beverly (Ahlers) Wasmund and current Brant resident Janet (Ahlers) Bowman. The hotel was purchased by Peter Pero Sr. in 1915. The back of this photo has a hand-written caption “the Union Hotel later known as Pero’s”, however, the name J.H. Schmatz in the photo raised our curiosity. We decided to look up this name using google (of course) and we did find this name in Dunkirk, N.Y. At this moment, we are unsure – is this really the Union Hotel? And if so, why is the name J.H. Schmatz behind the bar? It appears we have some more investigating to do! However, we hope you agree that this is still a great old photo!! Contributed by Brant- Farnham Historical Society __________
