Family and friends who attended John T. Waugh Elementary School’s annual Kindergarten Celebration heard songs from the tots and saw a special screening of two videos: one was “One Thing I Learned in Kindergarten” and the other was “One Thing I’ll Miss After I Leave Kindergarten.”

And, oh my, what they learned: they said they learned to read, add, subtract and make new friends. They learned to “do music.” They learned to make art projects, use technology, sight words, and count by 5’s. And they learned about pollination – and how to listen.

What will they miss? The overwhelming response was “my teacher.” They also said they will miss their friends, playing outside, art projects, technology and their class.

The special event concluded with a reception in the cafeteria, where treats were enjoyed and their Kindergarten milestones were celebrated before their next chapter in education begins next September.

It’s summertime and all the classic antique cars are out and about on the roads, therefore we thought this would be a fun photo! We do not know much about the car, but we can tell you a little bit about Margaret Nordblum. As per our 1989 Town of Brant Sesquicentennial Book: “Margaret Nordblum was born in Farnham, N.Y. on Christmas Day in 1907, the daughter of Charles Nordblum and Lena (Stolts) Nordblum. Weighing only 2 1/2 pounds at birth (her twin brother was stillborn), Margaret was so small that her parents put her in a shoe box to sleep and in the oven to keep warm.” (Do not do this!) “She had three sisters, Ester, Alice and Ethel. Attending grade school in Farnham, Margaret worked on her father’s farm during the summers. After completing high school in Silver Creek she attended Fredonia Normal School, earning a teaching certificate and eventually a Bachelor’s Degree at Fredonia.

Margaret had taught in the Farnham Elementary School for forty-three years. At the age of 62, in 1969 she retired due to problems with vision. Margaret was also once a member of Holy Cross Lutheran church in Farnham, and a former member of the Farnham Ladies Drum Corps.”

2 St. Francis Seniors Receive Scholarships from Jeffrey Michael Sgroi Foundation

On Tuesday, June 25th Hitch Edwards ‘19 and Gavin Krawiec ‘19 were each presented with scholarships from the Jeffrey Michael Sgroi Foundation. Named in honor of Coach Jeff Sgroi, an assistant baseball coach at St. Francis who passed away at age 45 in 2016, these $1500 awards are given annually to two St. Francis High School seniors that exemplify the same qualities of academic excellence, leadership, community service and athleticism that Jeff so proudly represented during his lifetime. Next year both young men will continue their academic and athletic careers as part of Division I baseball programs. Hitch will be attending St. Bonaventure University while Gavin will move on to Niagara University.

Lake Shore High School Students Turn Tables in Week of Caring

Students in Lake Shore High School’s Leadership in Action class turned the tables on the usual adults-caringfor-students model and planned and facilitated its Annual Week of Caring Project to thank the many people in the district that make things happen for them. Students used their leadership skills to plan events that showed teachers, support staff, bus drivers – and fellow students - how much they are appreciated.

The class was broken into four groups. Each day, one group sponsored an activity that required time outside of class. Students sponsored a Bus Drivers’ Brunch, a Teacher Luncheon, Support Staff Goodie Bags and a day of fun and games for students during lunch periods.

“Student and staff feedback came back so positive that the Leadership Class will plan this event again next year,” vowed teacher Jeff Connors.

Vona Completes 46 Peaks

Mark Vona of Derby, on June 22, 2019, summited Whiteface Mountain, his 46th peak completion of 46 mountains over 4000 feet in the Adirondack Mountain Park, New York. He now becomes an official member of the Adirondack 46ers Club.

Twenty-seven years after climbing his first peak, Mt. Marcy in 1992, Mark along with his son Neil Vona and nephew Steve Smith, accomplished his goal after first climbing Esther Mountain along the same trail as Whiteface. After watching the breathtaking views and enjoying a celebratory lunch at Castle Cafe located on the Whiteface summit, the trio descended the mountain in perfect weather and good spirits.
