Town of Brant’s Oldest Citizen Honored at the 15th Annual Brant Summer Festival

The Brant Summer Festival Committee was pleased to honor the Oldest Citizen of our town - Mrs. Josephine Battaglia! At the time of the festival Josephine was a mere 95 years of age, however on July 6th she celebrated her 96th year! Josephine received a celebratory “Oldest Citizen” ribbon and button.

In recognition, Josephine also held a place of honor in the Summer Festival Sunday Parade, riding in a classic car owned and driven by Dan Josephine (Spratz) Battaglia; the oldest citizen of the Town of Brant! and Roseanne Gernatt.

Josephine has lived her entire life within the town of Brant boundaries - more specifically in the village of Farnham. She married Russell (the boy next door), and together they raised their three children in Farnham. Until two years ago, Josephine was co-historian of Farnham with Beverly Wasmund. Today, Josephine enjoys being with family and friends, playing golf, putting together jigsaw puzzles and feeding all the local birds! She is a busy and loveable lady!

------------------------------------Recognizing and remembering the past recipient of this award: You will recall that Angelo Militello Jr. has held the title of Brant’s Oldest Citizen for the past few years. Angelo turned 100 years old in December 2017. Sadly, Angelo passed away the day following his milestone century birthday.

Sarah E. Steinbrenner of Derby completed a bachelor fine arts degree in graphic design in spring 2018 at SUNY Oswego and was recognized at the college's Commencement in May. A student who graduates with honors is indicated by the traditional Latin phrases summa cum laude, with highest honor (grade averages of 3.8 to 4.0); magna cum laude, with great honor (grade averages of 3.6 to 3.79); and cum laude, with honor (grade averages of 3.30 to 3.59).

Linda M. Hinton, age 67, of Derby, New York died Wednesday, July 11, 2018 in her home surrounded by her loving husband and children. She was born May 24, 1951 in Buffalo, New York; a daughter of the late George and Louise (Harper) Price. Her life was made whole by spending as much time as she could with her family. She enjoyed creating and working with her hands.

She married the love of her life, Charles R. Hinton, on March 20, 1971. Together they raised two beautiful children; Michelle (Steven) Lasker and Todd Hinton.

Linda has two cherish grandchildren; Jessica and Blake.

Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Beside her parents Linda is predeceased by her siblings; Gail Lewis, Gregory Price and Donald Price. Kelsey Anthon of Derby, NY passed away July 8,2018 at age 25 after a decade of battling addictions. Adoring and devoted mother of Mateo and Zion; loving daughter of David J. and Anne M. (Chmura) Anthon; sister of Danyelle, Jonathon (Darrel Lee) and Kayla Anthon; beloved aunt of Oliver, Matthew, Huron, Reverie and Paisleigh. Will be greatly missed by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. No prior visitation.

It was a gorgeous, sunny Sunday at the 15th Annual Brant Summer Festival and the Father’s Day Parade had gathered together quite the variety of participants! The parade began at 1PM and lineup was at the corner of Hammond and Brant-Farnham Roads. Town of Brant resident Bill Friend was the Parade Marshal. Three of the judges (we will let you wonder who they are) couldn't decide if they wanted to be in the parade or be judges - so they did both! Arriving just in the nick of time, they went straight to the front of the line and ended up leading the parade! Following close behind the judges on the Brant Farnham Road heading towards the Brant Town Park, was the town of Brant patrol car.

The parade route led into and through the town park.

Next in line behind the patrol car, were the classic cars, one of which carried Brant’s Oldest Citizen - Josephine Battaglia. She was seated comfortably in the rumble seat and was all smiles - as usual! Brant’s youngest citizens - twin brothers - Nicholas and Jude Meckes - were snuggled in their buggy with their parents Chris and Arlene proudly showing them off to the parade spectators. Also participating were local elected officials, creative floats, various types of on-road and off-road vehicles, big and little trucks, new and vintage tractors, local volunteer fire companies with their spotless fire trucks and emergency vehicles (complete with loud sirens), two sheriffs from the Erie County Mounted Sheriffs unit on their stately horses, an adorable baby pony with carriage, as well as John Bentley and wife with their majestic draft horses and wagon.

The parade ribbon categories were: Community Spirit, Most Beautiful, Most Unique, Most Original, Honorable Mention (2), Most Creative and Best Tractor. The first four categories also received monetary awards.

It was not an easy task, but the four judges were able to come to an agreement on the winners. We will let you know the winners soon, but for now, this story is to be continued...

George Lehley’s Hardware Store once stood at the Brant four corners (where the Memorial Park is today), Brant, N.Y.

In 1876, Mr. George Lehley managed a wagon and carriage industry in the town of Brant. His shop was located on the current site of the Memorial Park at the Brant four corners. According to historical records, Mr. Lehley hired ten or fifteen men who worked steady building buggies, surreys, cutters, wagons and parts. However, when the automobile was introduced as a new method of transportation and manufactured carriages and wagons were no longer needed, Mr. Lehley and his son Frank operated a hardware store on the same lot. Our historical society has an original advertisement from the Geo. Lehley & Son Hardware Store, circa 1915 that we found (bonus!) between the pages of a handwritten early 1900 Town of Brant Assessment book.

The Brant Post Office was also located in this building for many years with Grace Lehley listed as postmaster. Our record books also show that: George Lehley was the Brant Town Clerk in 1880 and then again from 1884 through 1890. He was then elected as the town of Brant Supervisor for eight consecutive years, from 1890 - 1897. His son Frank was an elected official as well, holding the office of Brant Town Clerk from 1934 - 1947. It is possible that George and Frank are both standing in front of the building in this photo, but this is not confirmed. (If you look closely, there is also a gentleman seated on the porch.)

This 1900something photo of Lehley’s Hardware Store was recently loaned to the Brant-Farnham Historical Society by Chuck Joy of Brant, N.Y. Chuck’s dad, Joseph Joy, had purchased the hardware store from Mr. Lehley. Our 1964 history book reads as such: “In the 1940’s Joseph Joy operated the hardware store, followed by Abraham’s clothing store and Tripi’s clothing store. The inside of the building was gutted by fire in June 1964.” Chuck told us that the store on the right is the old Red & White Grocery Store, which today (2018) houses the Brant Post Office. Joseph Joy also owned this building from which he managed a farm chemical business by the name of Niagara Chemical.

After selling the two store buildings, Joseph Joy operated the chemical business from the building next door to his personal residence on Brant-Reservation Road.

to as Mud Street, and thus the school became known as the Mud Street School. All five districts in Brant were oneroom schools, but Mud Street was the only one to remain that way. Today the now renovated school is a private residence owned by Mrs. Shirley Trask.

For our 175th Anniversary book printed in 2014, Shirley shared the following information with us regarding the school house and property. “In order to renovate the school house into a home, the building was raised to put a cellar beneath. When the building was purchased, the school bell was there on top of the roof. It had to be taken down so that a new roof could be put on. The bell was placed on the ground so the roof work could be done. The very next day - the bell was missing, nowhere to be found.

Someone had taken it! To this day they do not know where it is located - just hearsay that the bell is somewhere close by. If it is, Shirley hopes that whoever does have it, donates it to the historical society so that all may enjoy it.

The sidewalk that leads from the road to the front door is the original school sidewalk. The masonry under the front porch is also original. The garage that we see currently at their home was once the shelter for the horse and buggy that the teacher would “drive” to school.”

Born on May 19th, both babies were honored as the “Youngest Citizens” of the Town of Brant.

The Town of Brant’s Youngest Citizens Recognized at the 15th Annual Brant Summer Festival

The Brant Summer Festival Committee had to order TWO first place “Youngest Citizen” ribbons this year - because the winners were twins! Nicholas and Jude Meckes were born on May 19th, 2018. Proud parents Chris and Arlene (Clark) Meckes were able to walk in the Father’s Day Parade on Sunday, June 17th with the two little guys.

In addition to ribbons, the parents received “Proud Parents of Brant’s Youngest Citizen” buttons and a $25 Carter’s gift certificate.

Brant’s second Youngest Citizen was Addison Balistrieri who was born on May 4th, 2018, and the third Youngest Citizen was Logan James Busch born on April 29th, 2018.

Both Addison and Logan were unable to attend the Brant Summer festival, but their ribbons are at the Town Clerk’s office in the Brant Town Hall for pick up at the earliest convenience of the parents.

In addition to items mentioned above, all of the babies received bibs - handmade and donated by Jolene Lemke.

A Tasty Tradition in Farnham, N.Y.

A popular event that we all look forward to is the annual chicken barbeque held each year on Memorial Day at the Farnham fire hall. As is tradition, the barbeque begins following the end of the village Memorial Day services, which this year were again held at the Steven J. Rauker Memorial Park on Commercial Street. In the not too distant past, Farnham used to host a Memorial Day Parade as well as remembrance services at the Farnham Fire Hall. Along with local dignitaries, boys and girl scout groups and a whole fleet of fire trucks, the Lake Shore Middle School Band used to march in this parade, making it a very special Memorial Day remembrance for the smallest village in Erie County.

Then with budget cuts, the band was no longer available to march in Farnham and so, soon after that, the parade no longer was part of the days services. When the marching band was no longer available, the middle school band was able to provide a concert at the fire hall as part of the remembrance services. (Who could forget the 12 o’clock noon siren going off or the trains traveling by interrupting the ceremonies as they were underway!) However, this mini-concert too had to end because of budget cuts. Lucky for us, the Farnham Fire Dept. has continued on with the barbeque! In addition to tickets for the delicious chicken dinners, there are always many tickets available for sale to help support the hardworking and dedicated Farnham Volunteer Fire Department, the Farnham Fire Explorers group, the Farnham Emergency and Ambulance Squad and the Farnham Ladies Auxiliary with their good works.

Brant Native Enters Class of 2022 Plebe Summer at the U.S. Naval Academy

Hanna Prince a graduate of Nichols School in Buffalo, N.Y. was inducted into the Naval Academy Class of 2022 Thursday, June 28, and began six challenging weeks of basic midshipman training as part of Plebe Summer.

Approximately 1,200 candidates are selected each year for the Academy’s “plebe” or freshman class, and each student is required to participate in Plebe Summer. Last year the Naval Academy received over 16,000 applications for the Class of 2021.

During this time, plebes have no access to television, movies, the internet or music, and restricted access to cell phones. They are only permitted to make three calls during the six weeks of Plebe Summer.

The pressure and rigor of Plebe Summer is carefully designed to help plebes prepare for their first academic year at the Naval Academy and the four years of challenge, which awaits them.

As the summer progresses, the new midshipmen rapidly assimilate basic skills in seamanship, navigation, damage control, sailing, and handling yard patrol craft. Plebes also learn infantry drill and how to shoot 9 mm pistols and M-16 rifles.

Other daily training sessions involve moral, mental, physical or professional development and team-building skills. Activities include swimming, martial arts, basic rock climbing, obstacle, endurance and confidence courses designed to develop physical, mental and team-building skills. Forty hours are devoted to the instruction of infantry drill and five formal parades.

Founded in 1845, the U.S. Naval Academy today is a prestigious four-year service academy that prepares midshipmen morally, mentally and physically to be professional officers in the naval service. More than 4,400 men and women representing every state in the U.S. and several foreign countries make up the student body, known as the Brigade of Midshipmen. U.S. News and World Reports has recognized the Naval Academy as a top five undergraduate engineering school and a top 20 best liberal arts college. Midshipmen learn from military and civilian instructors and participate in intercollegiate varsity sports and extracurricular activities. They also study subjects such as leadership, ethics, small arms, drill, seamanship and navigation, tactics, naval engineering and weapons, and military law. Upon graduation, midshipmen earn a Bachelor of Science degree in a choice of 25 different subject majors and go on to serve at least five years of exciting and rewarding service as commissioned officers in the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps.

The Brigade of Midshipmen is comprised of approximately 4,400 students from every state in the union and a handful of international students. Each year, approximately 1,200 young men and women are admitted to the Naval Academy’s incoming class.

Angola Resident Ordained and Installed

Healthy choices and becoming active is the secret to our senior’s new outlook at the Senior Center of Evans. The members of the center have been requesting for Tai Chi and its finally at the Senior Center with instructors from the AFC716, Daniel Cimimo and Kate Molik. Week after week for the past spring months, Director Veronica Sullivan and staff witness the dedication and enthusiasm everyone is displaying when attending this particular class. Instructors Daniel and Kate have brought some new life back into the senior students that that they have been teaching weekly and the feedback has been nothing but positive. We can’t encourage enough the need for positive energy and calmness that we all need to bring into our busy lives. This is exactly what is being brought to the center by partnering with such a wonderful organization and instructors such as the AFC716.

Village of Angola resident Garrett Hall was recently ordained and installed as the pastor of the Grace Bible Baptist Church of Bath, New York. Pastor Hall studied for the ministry for the past eight years through the Faith Bible Baptist Church of Eden, New York, while living in Angola. He has also provided pulpit supply for Hilltop Baptist Church of Angola and other local churches. Pastor Art Kohl, pastor of both Faith Bible Baptist and Hilltop Baptist Churches, served on the ordination council.

Pastor Hall became the pastor of the church in Bath on July 1. His wife and three daughters are in the process of relocating there. Pictured are Pastor Kohl and Garrett Hall at the church in Bath.
