At 98 Years Old – Reva MacDowell – is truly Brant’s “Oldest Citizen”!

Recently we received an email stating “You are wrong the oldest citizen in Brant is not Josephine Battaglia”. What?!! This was news to us! Of course, we didn't want to remove Josephine’s title without ample proof, so naturally we investigated further. We sent back a note to Arlene (MacDowell) Miller and from her we discovered the following information: We learned that Arlene’s mother, Reva (Brinkman) MacDowell was born in Brant, N.Y. in October of the year 1919. As a child, she lived with her parents, Albert and Helen Brinkman and four older brothers; Albert Jr., Stanley, Ernest and Wilson, on the family dairy farm which was once located on the Brant-Farnham Road. The Brinkman family also raised chickens and from the farm sold eggs, butter and cream. Reva attended the Brant #4 (Mud Street) school as well as the wooden Farnham school #5; later graduating from the Angola High School in 1938. Reva was married to Lawrence MacDowell (he served as one of our town of Brant assessors), but he passed away in 1985. She has been living with her daughter in Brant, N.Y. and just last year on October 19, 2017, celebrated her 98th year surrounded by her family. We were told that Reva’s grandmother Sophia Middlemire, way back in the day, was also one of the oldest citizen’s of Brant, N.Y., living to the age of 98. And as an extra fact; Reva’s grammar school friend was Elsie Sager (also a lifelong resident of Brant), who herself reached the age of 97. (Elsie passed away in 2014.) Reva (Brinkman) MacDowell has lived through 19 presidential elections, from Woodrow Wilson to Donald J. Trump. Certainly, all these facts are proof enough! No arguments! Reva truly deserves the title of Brant’s Oldest Citizen. We are happy that Reva’s family contacted us. Embarrassingly, this was the first we had heard of Reva being one of our oldest citizens. We quickly ordered a new “Oldest Brant Citizen” ribbon and delivered it to her personally. Due to some health issues, Reva was recently moved to a facility in Eden, N.Y., however, as you can see from the photo, Reva appears pleased that the Brant-Farnham history books have been updated and corrected! The Historical Society is delighted to recognize Reva MacDowell as our true Oldest Brant Citizen - at 98 years of age! And Josephine Battaglia? Well she is just fine with being bumped out of first place in Brant. At a mere 96 years of age, she retains her title as Oldest Citizen of Farnham. It’s all good! Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society ___________

Frankfurters to Close Angola Concert Season on August 29th At 7pm on Wednesday, August 29th the Frankfurters German Show Band will present the last concert of the 36th season of concerts at the Gazebo at Angola’s Centennial Park. The evening is sponsored by the Lake Shore Federal Credit Union. The Frankfurters present a wide variety of music from beautiful waltzes and ballads to danceable tunes and ethnic based music from Germany, and yes, what is referred as “beer-garden music”! The band has recently returned from a three day gig at a German festival in Utica, NY. They are entering their busy fall Oktoberfest season. The group toured southern Germany, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, and Austria a few years ago and brought back special German music. While in Munich, they played at the world famous Hofbrauhaus and while in Innsbruck, Austria they presented their music at a convention center. Special presentations are made using a variety of bells, 13-foot long Alpine horns, and a singing saw. The first concert at the Gazebo is noted to have been on August 24, 1983. Plans are underway for next year’s 2019 season. Due to popular demand, the outstanding Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra from Lancaster High School will be back at the park on Wednesday, July 17th and Josie Waverly, a country star from Hilton, NY, will be back at the park on July 31st. The rain location for all of the concerts is through the courtesy of SASi, operators of the New Angola Theater. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs and enjoy the Frankfurters concert to close the 2018 season.

Evans and Brant-Farnham Historical Societies Display Community Effort at the Erie County Fair

The Evans Historical Society has been exhibiting in the historical building at the Erie County Fair for many years. This year, they graciously invited the Brant-Farnham Historical Society to join in the fun! The historical theme (set by the Erie County Fair) for this year was “What your community did to support the WWI and WWII war efforts”. The exhibit itself was brainstormed by the Evans group, pulling together and plotting out how to display all the ways communities jumped in to help during war time such as: ration books for gas, oil and food, scrap drives for newspapers, metal, aluminum foil, tin cans, string, rubber tires, rubber bands and even bones and lard/fat! Communities during these eras were encouraged to plant “V”ictory Gardens and all those on the home front were asked to work in canning and manufacturing companies. Civilians joined the Civil Air Defense to help spot enemy aircraft and were called upon to be Air Raid Wardens. US War and Savings Bonds were affordable and purchased by many. The American people were proud to help in any way possible, because by helping at home, they were helping their loved ones who had gone away to serve. Patriotism and love of country was found throughout this great land and in every corner of every community. Both the Evans and Brant-Farnham historical societies provided the displayed items. Included in the exhibit was a beautiful 48 star American flag as the center attraction and the family left at home; a mother and her children. Also the radio - a necessary item, relied heavily upon for communication and the latest updates on the War (there was no TV or cell phones). There were numerous examples of scrap drive items, ration coupons, “V”ictory garden planting tools, a 1943 cookbook distributed by the Cornell Extension during war time, a pickling crock, home canned items of tomatoes, pears, green beans and grape jelly…and an “Angola Dairy” milk bottle just because! Conserve, ration and save – waste not, want not - all good principles and values promoted during the wartime eras. Included also were muslin scraps, saved and used to make bandages, Air Raid armbands, a care package in preparation to send to the troops, and a well read, treasured, handwritten “V” mail letter or two sent from the boys and girls serving, to loved ones back home. Photos of the long gone Farnham and Brant canning factories were displayed as well. The efforts of these two groups did not go unnoticed or unrewarded as this year’s Erie County Fair historical display resulted in two awards - Honorable Mention (white ribbon) and the extremely coveted “BEST OF THEME” award (burgundy ribbon). Yeah!!! “V”ictory!! The folks from the Evans and Brant-Farnham historical societies had a grand time working together on this project. Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society ___________

News from The Evans Democratic Club

The Evans Democratic Club enjoyed a great turnout at the annual picnic earlier in August, on Sunday the 5th. At the August meeting on Tuesday the 21st, Town Board member Mike Schraft made a motion, which was passed, for the Club to pay the Town’s parking admission fee. This will apply to picnic attendees who were nonresidents and for residents who didn’t have a parking pass. Carima El-Behairy, candidate for NYS Senate 60th District, led the Pledge of Allegiance at the meeting. She was a small business owner of a company that designed fonts. She listened to the concerns expressed at the meeting on behalf of local small business regarding the state minimum wage. Carima favors a living wage for employees balanced with taking health care costs away from employers, noting that “the New York State economy is nothing without small businesses.” Local resident Joe Pinter addressed the Club on behalf of the campaign for Nate McMurray for Congress. Angela Marinucci, Democratic endorsed candidate for Erie County Clerk, talked about her campaign. She is a corporate immigration lawyer who lives on Grand Island with her husband and four daughters. The AFL-CIO recently endorsed her candidacy. Marinucci wants to be part of the change she wants to see in the community. If elected, she would be the first woman elected County-wide in 8 years. Sue Maxwell Barnes, candidate for County Court Judge, has been attending Evans Democratic Club meetings for the past three years. She talked about her upcoming primary on Thursday, September 13th. Board member Mike Schraft and Town Supervisor Mary Hosler discussed State funding obtained through the state senate. Vote on Primary Day: Thursday, September 13. From the Old Photo Album

Found in a donated envelope/postcard/stamp collection (donated by David Ciminesi to the Brant-Farnham Historical Society), was this little tidbit of history which ties the Evans and Brant areas together. We realize that this is not a photo, however, this envelope definitely has some interesting historic value both local and nationwide. For example, notice the envelope is addressed to Mr. Frank Ciminesi Sr., at the address of “Brant, N.Y.” Missing is a street address and zip code and yet, the intended person received this envelope! In 1946, the Brant Postmaster was Mrs. Grace R. Lehley and the Brant Post office was located in Frank Lehley’s Hardware Store at the four corners in Brant. As far as the missing street address – well – we know that Santa Claus receives his mail using only the address of “The North Pole”, so it is possible! The missing zip code in 1946 makes sense, because the U.S. Post Office did not institute the zip code system until July 1, 1963. Perhaps the individual house numbering system was not yet in place in our communities. The Angola, N.Y. business return address of “Southwestern Blvd. at Pontiac Road” is a bit more descriptive, but still missing a street number and zip code. According to some old advertisements found on fultonhistory.com, Weller’s Service Garage listed their phone number as “Angola 225” and their specialties as “wheel balancing” and “front end alignments”. In addition, they were willing to “pay $500 for any make or model of used car 1941 – 1951 on the purchase of a New Pontiac (any one of three models). Starting price - completely equipped 2 door - $2,513.40!!” In other words, with a trade-in of an approved used vehicle, you could have a brand new car for about $2,000. What a difference 60+ years makes! (We also wonder why…the 40cents? Interesting!!) The Buffalo, N.Y. postal cancellation covering the Thomas Jefferson 3cent postage stamp, is asking us to ”Give” to the “Red Cross War Fund”. The cancel date was April 1, 1946. We have read that the American Red Cross launched a massive campaign for help at the end of WWII. People were proud of their country and it certainly showed. Patriotism was on display everywhere; home, school, business and church; at work and at play. Everyone wanted to do their part to help and by funding the Red Cross they were able to show their support. A Red Cross War Fund Bond stated the following: **"I hereby subscribe to shares in the” 1946 “Red Cross War Fund as my contribution to the work of the Red Cross in disaster relief, prisoner of war services, home front activities, personal aid for servicemen, blood plasma, foreign war relief and rehabilitation." Without a doubt, these were and still are all excellent and worthy causes. **Information on Red Cross War Fund was found at: [http://leeuwerck. blogspot.com/2013/05/my-share-in-1945-red-cross-warfund.html] We are enjoying looking through this collection of old envelopes and postcards. We have come across many envelopes from businesses and people in our own town of Brant, as well as those towns surrounding us. Contributed by the Brant-Farnham Historical Society ___________
