On August 17, 2023 Robert R. Catalino (“BobCat”) of Angola passed away surrounded by his loving family. Bob led an exemplary lifetime of civic achievement. “Robert R. Catalino is the Town of Evans” was a statement made in 2014 when Bob received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce. It may sound like an exaggeration, but even a quick glance at his record reveals that Mr. Catalino directly influenced every aspect of life in Evans. So much of what people take for granted in the Town of Evans is the result of Bob’s hard work and dedication to the town he so loved.

Bob served as an Industrial Arts teacher in the Lakeshore Central School system from 1958 to 1994. He was a football and baseball coach for many of those years. As a friend and a mentor, he touched the lives of thousands of Western New Yorkers who now range from young adults to senior citizens. After retirement from the Lakeshore Central Schools he served as a teacher at Most Precious Blood School. Bob was a bigger than life presence at the school.

It is through his work in public life that he had the most profound impact on the Town. During his term as the Recreation Director from 1962 to 1966, he worked to expand the town program from a 7 week program to year round. He also founded a senior citizen program that keeps residents engaged with recreational activities and made transportation available to all.

As a Council Member from 1966 to 1970 and Supervisor from 1970 to 1977, Bob made development his mission. Projects he championed for the town were as varied as housing, retail plazas and factories. Some of the projects under Bob’s direction included the Derby on the Lake Housing Development behind the Tops Plaza, the

Ames Plaza (now the Tops Plaza in Derby), the Derby South Housing Development, the Flexovit Plant, the Triton Valley and Melody Meadows Mobile Home Park and the Thompson Town pool on South Creek Road. One of Bob’s proudest achievements was acquiring the land that eventually became the Sturgeon Point Marina. Bob also lobbied the State of New York to bring the thruway exit ramp (Exit 57A) to the Town to make it easier for people to come to the Town and Village of Angola.

It’s also important to recognize Bob’s contributions in the political arena. Bob was among John F. Kennedy’s first supporters in New York State and he worked hard to secure Kennedy’s presidential nomination in 1960. Bob also served for over 30 years as the Democratic party Town Chairman and worked tirelessly to the end to identify and support candidates from the local level all the way up to Congress.

Bob graduated from Lakeshore Central Schools, Buffalo State College and Fredonia State. He married Marlene Frawley in 1958 and they had 3 children, Roman, Lisa and Robert, II. In 1994 Marlene unfortunately passed away and in 2004 Bob happily began a new life when he married Patricia Charles, a fellow teacher from LSCSD. Together they have 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Cherished grandfather of Katie, Kelly, Rob, Joseph, Jessica, Erica, Anna, Lukas and Lucy. Also survived by 4 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The family will be present to receive friends Sunday, August 27, 2023 from 4-8PM a the Addison Funeral Home, Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 28, 2023 at 11AM in Most Precious Blood Church, 22 Prospect St. Angola, NY. Please assemble at Church. Flowers gratefully declined . Meeting a Few of the Oldest “Residents” of Forest Avenue Cemetery

To help celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the village of Angola, the Evans Historical Society hosted an opportunity to “meet” and learn about some of the oldest “residents” at Forest Avenue Cemetery. Mr. Gifford Swyers, sporting a top hat - and with his usual sense of humor and wit - introduced each of “Forest Avenue Cemetery’s Residents” as they appeared.

Appearing that day were ten (10) re-enactors in total, and each had an interesting narrative to share. Persons and or families highlighted and their “representative” in order of appearance were: Hiram Backus presented by Sally Needham, Joseph Bennett represented by Kurt Weinheimer, Kingan Family presented by Dennis Kingan, Pius Schwert presented by Patty Friend, LaClair/Dibble Family represented by Rick LaClair, Joseph Froehley presented by Mary Jayne Ginnitti, members of the Ehmke Family presented by Kathy (Ehmke) Allen, Oatman Family represented by Susan Swyers, Willis Carrier presented by Laurie Reitz and the Bundy Family presented by Donna Nagel.

To bring their stories of these local and prominent personalities to “life”, the reenactors wore period costumes and occasionally included visual items such as drawings, photos, and miscellaneous memorabilia. As they described their respective persons and or families, it became evident that the presenters had prepared in advance. By means of their investigations and research, it truly felt as if each representative had “first-hand” knowledge of the people they were describing and or portraying.

There were two performances on that beautiful and hot summer day of July 23rd. Approximately ninety (90) people were in attendance for the first presentation and close to seventy-five (75) for the later. In future articles we hope to provide you with a snippet or two from each of the presenters. We believe you will enjoy learning about the “oldest residents of Forest Avenue Cemetery” as much as we did.
