Our officers are being ambushed and murdered. One thing will never change, officers will always respond when someone needs help. I wonder if for these past nineteen years, those that lived through 911 have been telling their children and grandchildren the history of September 11th 2001 so we will NEVER FORGET what our first responders went through. To all of our Law Enforcement and first responders, your serve our community with courage, valor and unwavering commitment to justice. Our community owes you and your families a debt that can never be repaid. You know how much we enjoy sharing our Brant Strawberry Festival photos! Today’s photo was taken in 1966 by Julie Studio which was located at 6 Bayview Avenue, Silver Creek, NY - Phone YEllowstone 4-2695. This “Kodak Moment” captures Rose Dispence with the display of First Place Blue Ribbons on the four strawberry crates labeled as: Red Coats, blank, Sure Crop and Earlidawn. Don’t you just love the glimpse of the festival hustle and bustle in the photo background as well? We don’t know if it was Rose or her husband Russell Dispence that had officially won the ribbons. Russell and Rose Dispence and family were involved in the Brant Strawberry Festival activities throughout the years, serving on a multitude of festival committees. Their farm and business (Brant Implement Service) was located on the Milestrip Road in Brant with descendants residing at the homestead and surrounding land area today. It was Rose and Russell’s grandchildren who donated this photo to the historical society and many strawberry festival related items including pins, ribbons, trophies and miscellaneous paper items such as additional photos, strawberry shortcake tickets, postcards, festival parking permits and associated correspondence. We greatly appreciate the family sharing these items with us as they are on permanent display for those who visit our historical room. From a 1964 Strawberry Festival booklet we found the following tidbits of information regarding the local strawberry crops: “Here in New York State, Erie County ranks as the largest Strawberry - producing area in the state and in the little Town of Brant, home of the home of the Strawberry Festival, we find the heart of this Strawberry-producing area. During the past five years, the Strawberry acreage in the Brant- North Collins area has remained quite constant. About 1200 acres of this red luscious fruit are planted annually, in comparison with the 1600 acres of six years ago. A shortage in the labor supply, which is so vital to the harvest of this crop, has necessitated a decrease in acreage. Types of Strawberries typically grown in the Brant-North Collins region are: Red Glow, Sure Crop, Earlidawn, Dixieland, Pocahontas, Sparkle, Midway and Jerseybelle. Many consumers sometime question why there are so many varieties grown here. The answer is simple. Every grower has a different type of soil on his farm and he may find one variety more adapted to his soil than another. Then, too, many growers prefer to plant four or five kinds in order to lengthen the harvesting season. By planting an early variety (Earlidawn), a midseason variety (Midway) and a late variety (Sparkle) and a very late variety (Jerseybelle), a grower can assure himself that he will harvest strawberries over a four-week period. The notation states that the $63.36 value of the check reflected Miss Nordblum’s salary to March 19, 1937. At that time of the photo and also of the payroll check, the Farnham School (#5) was part of the Brant School District. On the check, Mrs. Lucy Nordblum is listed as Treasurer, Mark E. Crawford as President and Lee Walker as Clerk. The Farnham Grammar School once stood on the corner of Erie Road and Commercial Street in Farnham, N.Y.
