Both photos raised our curios ity about the emblems and the type of motorcycles, so we decided to spend some time investigating online. (We were hoping they were the Emblem Brand motorcycles made in Angola, NY at the Emblem Mfg. Company, but sadly they were not.) For the Brant photo, we determined it is an Excelsior Twin Autocycle with sidecar (circa 1911 – 1917). The bike in the Angola photo is also an Excelsior. The manufacturer is the Excelsior Motor and Equipment Co., Chicago, Ill. USA. Not only for recreational use, these types of mo torcycles were also used by the New York National Guard in 1917 accord ing to a few of the articles we came across. (There is a lot of information out there!) We were also intrigued by the treads on the tires, and found out that they are NON-SKID tires (the letters are quite visible), American made in Akron, Ohio, by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. In all our searching, we uncovered another fun fact: The Excelsior Company developed the first motorcycle capable of reaching 100mph. Pretty cool!!

Recently, we were browsing through the photos taken over 100 years ago by Brant photographer Lynn Walters. A motorcycle with sidecar caught our eye. We won dered about the emblem. What brand of motorcycle was this? We don’t know who the young lady is, and we are guessing that the photo was taken in Brant, NY. Around the same time, in the photos on loan to us by the Estate of William Haberer, we found a photo of a motorcycle which had the same emblem. We believe this photo was taken on Main Street in the village of Angola, but once again, the person in the photo graph is not identified.

The first of the “Family Night” celebrations was held on July 11th at the Evans Town Park. In addition to the Town Park’s ever fun playground and beach area, there were added attractions of a bounce house and “Take and Make” crafts from the Angola Public Library. The Girl Scouts also had a craft area.

As we mentioned in an earlier article, a spinoff commit tee of Evan’s 200th Anniversary Committee was created, hoping to perpetuate the sense of community we all en joyed through the various sponsored activities last year. The Evans Community Events Committee, co-chaired by community volunteer Katherine Nytz and Councilwoman Laurie Reitz, decided to host weekly “Family Nights” every Monday. The committee felt it was important to hold the events throughout the various parks within the Town of Evans, and not just in one location.
