The College of the Holy Cross is excited to welcome Zachary Barney of Angola as a member of the College's Class of 2025. At 822 students, the Class of 2025 includes students from 33 states and 15 nations across the globe. The Annual Brant Summer Festival Parade was held on Saturday June 19th. The parade judges this year included: past Town of Brant Supervisor Leonard K. Pero, Shannon Shepherd (Town of Evans Public Relations Assistant to Evans Supervisor Mary Hosler) and Town of Brant residents Sandy Fininzio and Joanne Kaczmarek. We were elated to learn that Lenny was in back in his hometown and that he was willing to say “YES” to helping us out this year! Many will recall that it was the idea of Lenny and his daughter Amanda (Pero) West to organize and establish the Brant Summer Festival way back in 2003. We are celebrating our 17th Annual Festival this year (minus one year for Covid in 2020). It was certainly our pleasure to have Shannon Shepherd join us as a parade judge this year. The Town of Evans is celebrating their 200th Year (Bicentennial) and has been very busy with their own activities. It was so great of them (and Shannon of course!) to help us out! And last but not least, our town of Brant residents Sandy and Joanne - these two smiling ladies are always willing to lend a hand when needed. You will find them participating and helping out at many local events. Together these four judges were able to select the parade winners in the seven different categories. In Memoriam It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father Edward “Tex” Davis on August 22, 2021 after a year-long fight against cancer. He is survived by his sons Edward, Jr. and his wife Kateri; Mark and his wife Vicki; Kevin and his wife Kelly; his grandchildren Ashley, Alissa, Jaclyn and Kasey, his great-grandchildren William and Jude, his sister Doris “Doty” Durusky, his brother James “Jimmy” Davis and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. The family will be hosting a celebration of life/memorial ceremony at the Farnham Fire Hall at 5:30 pm on Sunday, September 26, 2021. As an officer of Local 2603 of the United Steelworkers of America, a life-long member of the Farnham Fire company and Ambulance Squad, Chairman of the Brant-Farnham Democratic Club, a long time Trustee and then Mayor of the Village of Farnham, the co-founder of the Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop for Brant-Farnham and co-founder of the Brant-Evans Soccer Club (now the Lake Shore Youth Soccer Association of which he was the first President) we know that he touched many lives through his selfless public service. The Earl J. Benjamin Store

This is an early postcard of the Earl Benjamin store located in Derby. In her book titled “Images of America - Evans and Angola” published by Arcadia Publishing, Cheryl Delano (past historian for the Town of Evans) advises us that the Earl Benjamin store was opened originally by Francis A. (Frank) Benjamin. Frank A. was a veteran of the Civil War. “He and his son Fred H. were killed on May 2, 1907 at a railroad crossing while driving a covered delivery wagon. Earl was the other son who kept the store running.” The postcard is on loan to us by the William Haberer Estate. The handwritten postcard message (the best that we can tell), reads as follows; “This is a Gro store at Derby N.Y. I take oil ther. That horse and the boy standing holding it and his father was killed to the railroad this summer just a few minutes after I was there one day. They were killed not over 20 rods from the store.” Signed simply “Bye Bye” on both the front and back messages, the unnamed sender, mailed the card to his sister - Mrs. F. D. Johnson who lived in Crawford, PA. We can read the very faded postmark date as Aug 28th, 190_. Using Cheryl’s information as well as the postcard contents, we will surmise that the year is 1907.
