The Block Hotel and Motel, Route 5, Evans, N.Y.

While reading through the two post card binders on loan to us from the Bill Haberer Estate, we happened across a “GIANT POST CARD” of the Block Hotel and Motel. The post card was printed in “Genuine Natural Color” and made by Dexter Press, Inc. West Nyack, N.Y. It was published by Richard J. Furlong, of Williamsville, N.Y. The back of the post card provides the following description: “BLOCK MOTEL, Office Phone: Angola 522R. The Block Motel located on the Lake Shore, Route 5, at Evans, N.Y. consists of 30 colorful units, motel and cottages. Air-Conditioned. AAA Approved. Many facilities to serve the most discriminating guests. Every effort has been made to please you after a long day’s drive. Only three minutes’ drive is Evans Beach, one of the finest Sandy Lake Beaches in Western New York.” In 1905, it was Charles and Mary Rogendorf who built the Block Hotel of square and rectangular blocks made of stone and concrete. The hotel was built to provide a stopover between Buffalo and Erie, Pennsylvania and offered weary travelers sleeping rooms, a dining room and stable services for the horses. In the 1940’s and 1950’s the motel houses were built and the accommodations included a swimming pool. We believe that many will recollect the buildings and especially the sturdy block building that had once stood on the corner of Lake St. and Rt. 5 (where the Walgreen’s Store is today). Marie Pingitore Towlson

Marie Pingitore Towlson of Baldwinsville, NY, formerly of Angola, passed away July 30, 2021. She graduated valedictorian of her Lake Shore Central class in 1954. She received a full scholarship to Syracuse University and was the only woman to graduate from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering in 1958. She met Howard, her husband of 63 years while attending SU. After graduating she chose a career as a domestic engineer, raising four girls. After making a puppet for one of her daughters in the early 1970’s, Marie saw a market for washable, durable puppets and her “eMPTy Heads" business was born. Marie’s puppets were used in school language classes, health clinics and have traveled all over the world. She often filled requests to create look-alike puppets. Her passions included visiting with friends and family, reading, playing the piano, sewing, gardening, completing the NY Times crossword puzzles and anything chocolate. Marie will be remembered for her sweet smile, twinkling eyes and her sense of humor. Predeceased by parents Rose and Anthony Pingitore, Marie is survived by her husband Howard; daughters Betsy (David) DeMay, Diane, Susan, and Barb (Bill) Mirch; grandchildren David DeMay, Stephanie DeMay, Ryan Mirch and Jared Mirch; her siblings Tony (Connie) Pingitore, Sandra (Jim) Hooge and Richard (Jojo) Pingitore and many cousins, nieces and nephews. The Town of Brant patrol car picked up the Town of Brant and Village of Farnham’s Oldest Citizen to lead the Brant Summer Festival Parade! A few hours in advance of the parade, we had asked Chief Don Hepkins if this was a possibility and without hesitation, his response was “Absolutely Yes”! Brant Patrolwomen Tracey O’Donnell was selected for the task, and, as you can see in the photo, delighted to provide a ride of honor to a very special lady - Mrs. Josephine Battaglia. Josephine turned NINETY-NINE years young on July 6th! This spunky, kindhearted gal, brings a smile to the face of each and every person she meets. We were all thrilled to have her lead the parade on June 19th and then join us for the various Josephine Battaglia proudly 17th Annual Brant Summer displays her “Oldest Citizen” Festival celebrations and acribbon at the 17th Annual tivities.
